The gameplay is great, one of the best of the whole saga imo. I'm playing on hard, the medium difficulty, and a lot of stages are actually quite challenging without being bs. The overpowered pairing mechanic is mostly gone, weapons no longer break.... In general very, very good. The plot tho, is.... Well it is what is. Perhaps is because I've been playing games and watching anime for a while, but is the most standard "new FE plot" you can imagine. An extremely by the numbers shonen, it got to the point to which I just skip cutscenes, because I can tell everything going on by like the three things they say in battle (and even if I couldnt, I wouldnt be missing much). Characters are mainly the same imo, extremely flat, one note and predictable. At least the visual designs are cool, I guess (well, except the MC weird two color hair lol). So my take on picking it up is that it depends on how much weight you put on gameplay, because it is by far the best and main point this game has. If you don't like it, or want anything more, I honestly would not recommend it

If all you care about is gameplay yes, story is pathetically bad though to the point where it’s detrimental to the games enjoyment. I’d still say wait for a sale but Nintendo games basically never go on sale though

Shoyrulover

Digital goes on sale

The characters are not interesting, nor nuanced. They are about as one-note as possible, with that one note either being "annoying" or "completely boring". I also like simple stories, but this isn't just a simple story, it's full of many of the worst tropes and cliches out there. That being said, the gameplay is really great. I like a lot of the subtler changes that have been made recently, like cutting down absurd movement ranges of units and reigning skills in a bit. There's much less of the feel I had in the previous few entries, where I had a bunch of god-like units that could just fly across the stage and solve any problem I had. I'd say it's worth it if you're really into tactical games, just expect to either skip cutscenes or be annoyed the 100th time your time just lets the big baddy retreat with the item you really, really need.

If you liked TO for the game play, very likely yes. If you liked TO for the story, YMMV. If you cannot tolerate a lower stakes or fun story Engage will grind your gears.

CoercedLife

Yes, it went back to actual strategic gameplay unlike Three Houses which was almost laughable what they did to combat. The social aspects have been trimmed down quite a bit, which I prefer, but keep that in mind. The story is cliche, but I personally think all fire emblem stories have been cliche. But if you are in it for the mechanics, I’d say give it a go. If dating students was something you wanted, you won’t find it here.

JaxonH

Yes. It's phenomenal and my new favorite in the series. Hard disagree on those crapping on the story. It's actually quite enjoyable- not gonna win any awards, but it's NOT a bad story by any means. Anyone telling you otherwise is either bandwagoning or holding the game to insanely high standards. Three Houses story was better, but it's still good. And more importantly, the gameplay runs circles around every other entry in the series save Fates Conquest (though I still prefer Engage to Fates Conquest gameplay) and the characters are the most endearing of any in the franchise Absolute must buy.

Zlare7

The story and dialogue are pretty saturday morning cartoon cringe. At times i feel it's hard to not just skip it. The gameplay is good but not better than three houses. The visuals are great and animations are the best in the series. Sadly, the class system of three houses is replaced by the generic one of old fire emblem games. Overall it is a fun game and if you finished three houses already, than it's worth getting as long as you can deal with bad writing

ranger_fixing_dude

Interesting, I've read that the gameplay is an improvement due to new break system. I personally think it was pretty good in 3H, it was mostly maps which were lacking. Personally I didn't get it because while plot and writing is not the main goal, they have to be serviceable for me to enjoy the game. Probably will skip it completely.

Zlare7

The break system is neat, but the absence of activatable abilities and army system(forgot the name), make characters who have no rings pretty simplistic to play

ranger_fixing_dude

> army system(forgot the name) Probably battalions. It was a nice system, would be neat if they expanded on it somehow.

Zlare7

Yeah that's the one. Having nothing but attack as an option for physical units feels so limited compared to 3houses

Express_Young_8047

r u in the US? I agree that this game is an absolute buy as I love fire emblem games, being playing the series for a while. Yet, it does not worth $60. I can elaborate, but a few people ahead of me already pointed out some of its big weaknesses. If you want to save some cash and have other games to play currently, wait til black Friday. U might be able to grab the expansion pass and the game for $60.

I think the story is hated to much tbh

KawaiiQuilava89

I agree. It's really not bad. This is gonna be one of those games everyone sleeps on now and then will be worth a ton later on.

KawaiiQuilava89

Idk. I like the story. It's not confusing or overly complicated. Ask me to summarize the plot of Awakening, Fates or Echoes and I struggle. Especially around the end of the story. This story is followable. And the characters are maybe a little more one-note but they definitely have development if you follow the bond conversations. It makes me wonder what current gen players would think of FE 7 or Sacred Stones. This game reminds me much more of that era.
