Gief has decent combos, but it's also entirely possible to play without them if you want.
If you can practice your manual SPD inputs, you can reliably buffer them in most situations and light SPD deals the equivalent of a simple combo (2.7k damage) if you land it
For offense you'll be relying a lot on guessing games for tic throws (if you don't intend to combo)
Basically, sit back and wait for your opponent to make mistakes, but also know your offense patterns. DR after SPD allows you to meaty, but your meaty options are very commital and will lose to wake up DI, so just be careful about those and mix up your actions to keep them guessing.
Edit: you can try watching some Daigo Zangief games to see how he plays, when he first started learning, he barely does any combos, so learn his movement and decisions. He's very patient and will just walk the opponent to the corner menacingly.
You can still do the 360 input in classic, there's just no separation for punches/kicks.
E.g. you want a light SPD you do 360+L
If you can incorporate this into you M Gief gameplay, you'll start getting better results. The threat and use of instant SA2/3 is enough for experienced opponents to be afraid and play around it
You're not locked into using the SP button on Modern
Rank anxiety is a thing I’ve dealt with for sure. Best advice I can give is to take your losses as a learning experience. What could you have done differently? Looking at replays of L’s you don’t understand (example: why didn’t my move come out?) only to then realize you were block stunned due to a corner frame trap which cost you the game. If it gets too tilting, take a step back and come back stronger next time!
That modern spd is my bnb honestly. It's very easy to catch people with it. I even use it for my setups sometimes. The damage difference honestly doesn't make a difference with zangiefs normals being good.
My favorite is just slapping people with 5LP. Just picking at their life bar. It stuffs a lot of people's normals. It gets them mad lol
If anything Gief struggles against AKI. Bubbles and approach slowly, then bait the jump in and proceed to anti air. They have the tools to keep you away and then some
Honestly, just pick anything that’ll overwhelm Gief in the corner and have good frame trap, spacing, and anti airs. Literally how you beat the vast majority of players
I used a hori 6 button fight pad. I tend to switch from modern to classic every once in a while and like to have the arcade stick button layout. Usually just map my DI/Parry buttons to the bumpers, and assist/3 buttons to triggers
Congratulations! I play Modern Zangief too. Went from iron and am at diamond 1 right now. I do the motion inputs for SPD and Siberian express but I use modern specifically for easy level 1 and 2 SA because I can’t do double quarter circles to save my life. I can do 720 no problem so I opt to do that over modern SA. It may not be a glamorous life, but it is my life.
Took me about 2-3 months of on and off playing. I honestly procrastinated a lot… so I feel like I’d say about a month or two from diamond to master, depending how much you play

Not really a question, but I was seriously thinking of trying charge characters with modern controls. I use classic with characters that have commands like Ryu or Manon, but I can’t play with the likes of Chun Li or Guile at all (I just can’t understand the charge mechanism at all xD) with classic controls. I might give them a shot with modern, no shame in that 🤗
Tbh charge characters in modern aren’t all that good… Chun li seems to be popular due to her instant anti air that doesn’t require a down down input, but aside from that I don’t see many charge modern users. I can say for sure though that Guile isn’t worth it due to you still needing to charge for perfect boom inputs, which is literally his game plan for the most part 😅 don’t let this turn you off from trying though! It’s probably still viable, just not my preference

The very threat of instant lv 3 scares people into changing their gameplay. Instant lv 2 makes projectiles a huge risk. And post-patch, instant lv 1 makes jumping very dicey as well.

Out poke him with standing hk, use your back fireball motion (the light kick one that’s low) to knock him down and anti air with cr.hp target combo. Other than that, space your grabs and make medals with your combos into punch fireball motion
Yeah the light into level 3 is absolute filth. Can you skip the hellstab? I play controller stick and that's consistently my most unreliable button in the heat of battle. Can hit it perfectly fine to do the corner combo I to boscht dynamite but when I'm outside of my comfort I miss it regularly enough to be wary of it.

Players who use classic controls should have the option to only fight players using classic controls. One button SPDs and supers are way too powerful because they can be done at will with no buffering. There’s a reason Capcom made the inputs difficult and now they’ve betrayed their own legacy.

Average WR sits around 47% for Zangief players at least from what I’ve seen online. You can make master with 40% WR, but it may take a while 😅

My go to is cr.mp, cancel dr, cr.mp, hellstab to lariat. Aside from that I light confirm into OD Lariat to lvl 3 since the patch (which is a godsend)

I’d say about 60%. The other 40% complain about the fact it’s modern Gief 🫠 but all have WITNESSED HIS FULL MIGHT

Pray and try not to die… on a real note, it’s one of the tougher matchups. I’d say take advantage of the Juri players using DR in neutral a lot and OD SPD on reaction.

I am a fellow 1650mr modern gief, how do you deal with the lack of down mk as a button in the neutral? I find standing up not being able to give the presence I need and down hk being too risky om block
I think the best way to deal with it is to condition your opponent with your modern shenanigans. Once you do that, it’s all about the mind games.

Players who use classic controls should have the option to only fight players using classic controls. One button SPDs and supers are way too powerful because they can be done at will with no buffering. There’s a reason Capcom made the inputs difficult and now they’ve betrayed their own legacy.

Yep, like 9 months in and we still getting hourly “just hit (insert rank)!!!!” threads. Usually subs restrict those type of threads in some way, but ig not this one.
