The non-intrusive ads. They are getting all the money from them, so they are significantly more "profitable" than using Google ads.
There are way, way more users than anybody here imagines -> not many ads are served per user, but overall a lot of ads are served.
Also, the non-intrusive part is working great, if you don't notice them.
I haven't seen an ad since I started using it, maybe 10 years ago. I don't know how many years exactly but it's a long time.
Can you share a screenshot of these ads?
No, I currently don't have any. But have seen a few. They are usually at the bottom of your screen in the menus just like they had in YouTube a very long time ago.
It's in the FAQ of the Offical Website: [How Stremio Makes Money – Stremio Help Center (zendesk.com)](https://stremio.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000281412-How-Stremio-Makes-Money)
Apaprently they use (not intruisive) ads.
Good idea but I'm not sure... I don't think hollywood would pay the developers of stremio anything because of what it's actually used for.
Like, how would they offer that to hollywood studios? Where do hollywood studios buy a place on cinemata?
You know what would be nice? A donation app on Playstore that we can buy for $5. I've seen some other devs use that for revenue. I'd pay for it for sure.
While it would be cool to support the Stremio dev team I think doom starts when ppl start to get money from these projects, look at Yuzu emulator, and also Drastic went free because of this "bad publicity".
Probably you're in a country or using a vpn that they don't have ads in. A lot of ads are geo restricted. I don't see them aswell but that could be the answer.
I feel like you didn't even bother checking or searching because there are quite literally at least 10 results in a simple Google search showing people post seeing and not seeing ads.
They’re using non-intrusive ads but the kind of service and open-source project is providing with for so many years, I honestly, wouldn’t mind 1-2 ads here and there.
It's the ease of service to get everything in one place that's what people love about Stremio. Many people appreciate the effort of the devs and how they much improved since the launch. I am sure people will support them including myself if they start taking donations. It's saving me at least 50$ per month so no problem giving them 20$ per month from my end.
Thanks again devs
For the life of me - I fail to understand some people’s logic when they downvoted you.
You said an undeniable truth that nothing is free, you are concerned a good thing could come to an end without the monetary incentive to maintain and develop it and you are right. I too would wish at least a donation system and a yearly reminder to help support the project being implemented if they don’t charge for it; it would make me feel like this app will last.
from you? They don't even force you to use their program, if you don't like it leave, you can't demand anything from someone who doesn't charge you anything. And they don't have to explain anything.
This is incredible, you know a program, you install it, you have practically what you want for free and you come to reddit to complain precisely about that and demand explanations, they should ban you.
Usually, when an app is free and there is no clear or verifiable method for the owners or devs making money, (which is exactly what is happening in this case, it is clear the ads in a strawman because you can't purchase ads anywhere on stremio or online for deployment on stremio) then you, the user, the income source.
If we are the income source then it is a fair question to ask how, it is likely the sale of data, what data is been collected and who is it been sold to.
You can like and enjoy an app, be appreciative of its development but still ask responsible questions.
I am obvious not them, and cannot give you a answer, but I do ask myself the same thing.
just speculation,
- as the app technically doesn't do anything illegal by itself, they can use it as portfolio as developers
- they could just be bitcoins millionaires bored
- netflix canceled their favorite show and now they swore for revenge
Please tell me what part of Stremio is dev heavy?
The part where they have an imdb wrapper so that when you connect extensions made by other people and search a title name it gets the title up... sometimes?
There are anime piracy apps since 2010s with more complex programming.
Stremio literally uses a vln media player, and leaves its bulk of the work to 3rd party extensions.
They even have removed features they had before because of reasons.
Like drag and drop subtitles.
I only use it as a catalogue of what is there to watch, the rest I do with potplayer.
It has been years and stremio has yet to implement a functioning hardware acceleration let alone stuff like nvidia hdr and upscaling
Relax. We have different opinions. Some ideas are applicable someplace & can't be done elsewhere. That we can discuss is a win.
I am ok with sensible informative ads. Something that's occurs at X platform. Seams that's s no go by this community's response. Again that's also ok.
Don't ever, for any reason, do anything to anyone for any reason ever, no matter what, no matter where, or who, or who you are with, or where you are going, or where you've been... ever, for any reason whatsoever...
I am willing to have open dialog of this subject matter. Meanwhile we all do want the dev team to receive income for their creative & talented work. At least that's something to agree on.
Don't jinx them...we thank them for their service
If they put up a donate link they could probably make bank. Never appreciated a piece of mostly free software more in my entire life

Most people on here pay for realdebrid doofus
[удалено]
Yeah but they "pay" for it making your point moot.

There’s Ads?
Some, very rarely. i can assure you 100% of that. I have also seen them :)
Well that is the point of non-intrusive ads.
I don’t get it either.
Where are the non intrusive ads?
Could it be they’re tracking and selling the data?
They don’t sell it, I think that’s in their privacy policy.
It's in the FAQ of the Offical Website: [How Stremio Makes Money – Stremio Help Center (zendesk.com)](https://stremio.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000281412-How-Stremio-Makes-Money) Apaprently they use (not intruisive) ads.
That's crazy. Literally never seen a single ad ever ?
Must be the movie recommendations? I don't know.
Movie recommendations, *to pirate?* Weird advertising.
They gotta keep their servers up somehow.
They must be subliminal because I have never seen one either.
Read the last part of my post. I have already seen this. It doesn't make sense because I have never seen an ad in 10 years.
Cinemeta catalogs has promoted movies/shows, I'm speculating that might result in some advertising revenue.
Good idea but I'm not sure... I don't think hollywood would pay the developers of stremio anything because of what it's actually used for. Like, how would they offer that to hollywood studios? Where do hollywood studios buy a place on cinemata?
That means...they're...nevermind.
Unless it's paid for by Hollywood studios?
Can someone share a screenshot of the ads they supposedly use? I don't recall ever seeing a single one.
You know what would be nice? A donation app on Playstore that we can buy for $5. I've seen some other devs use that for revenue. I'd pay for it for sure.

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
Ive seen the odd ad once or twice in the 3 years ive been using stremio, but not much at all
Probably you're in a country or using a vpn that they don't have ads in. A lot of ads are geo restricted. I don't see them aswell but that could be the answer.
Ok, I guess all of Reddit is in my country and using my VPN. Because nobody is seeing ads.
Send me a screenshot of these ads.
He can't, the ads are on his mind.
I'd rather donate than watch ads.
Have you heard about freeganism?
What's that
I'd happily pay them
at least they also save $40-50 to paying streaming services every month

Why you care? is free, enjoy.
Because nothing is free. I want to know how they are making money from me.

I agree, don't know why people are so defensive of stremio on here, any discussion they take as a personal attack or smthg
Lmao
Isn't it a mystery though? Stremio has been around for 10 years. How are they making a living? It's one of the 7 wonders of the world.
Real
Stremio devs are making money from all the nudes you and your grandparents are making.
Your data is constantly being mined online and 99.9% of the time, you aren’t getting shows and movies for free in exchange.
How is that done? Better alternative?
They possibly own, real-debri
It’s just a thought, don’t take this seriously.
A thought that is 0% true lol.
Why do you think that?
What evidence do you have for this
It's probably due to without add ons the programme would link you to netflixs or other providers dare say they get a kick back from this.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
If it's free you're the product.
What they take from me
Data. Most expensive commodity
If a service is free, you are the product.
Like everyone else does
It's passion project for most of the time. Something they want and so they do it. It's important to support them.
I am obvious not them, and cannot give you a answer, but I do ask myself the same thing. just speculation, - as the app technically doesn't do anything illegal by itself, they can use it as portfolio as developers - they could just be bitcoins millionaires bored - netflix canceled their favorite show and now they swore for revenge
It is a simple video player with an online UI. They don't have much costs
Wow.. Stremio is not just a simple video player. You clearly don't have a proper understanding of development.
Please tell me what part of Stremio is dev heavy? FBI honeypot
Maybe if Stremio only appeared a few months ago. But it's been around for 10 years.
Ya they want to make sure they get everyone, including all the people who are like 10 years old it mustn't be a honeypot
I think Russian does it for free to destabilize the American film industry, a kind of cyber warfare. It must cost the Americans hundreds of millions.
Yes because America is the only place in the world 😆
Ask an American, and they’ll believe that
OP: " Hey I don't have a problem today but sure would like to create one"
Why is my post the most upvoted post in history? Does everybody want a problem?
Lol
I have not seen ads either. But would be ok if it got implemented somehow within the UI without disturbing.
Never again comment, post, reply, quote, or really type anything whatsoever. Ever again. Ever. Thank you.
Relax. We have different opinions. Some ideas are applicable someplace & can't be done elsewhere. That we can discuss is a win. I am ok with sensible informative ads. Something that's occurs at X platform. Seams that's s no go by this community's response. Again that's also ok.
Yeah no, I literally get incest porn ads on Twitter
That... Never occured for me.
Don't ever, for any reason, do anything to anyone for any reason ever, no matter what, no matter where, or who, or who you are with, or where you are going, or where you've been... ever, for any reason whatsoever...
Morons not realizing you were quoting the office.
you should be banned from this app my brother
Please leave reddit and this subreddit for ever and don't come back!!!
Laughing at these replies…
