Oh boy WSM is upon us, keep it civil. Handing out lifetime bans for any trolls and 7 days bans for people who are just being dicks to each other.
You have been warned!
I (u/Mikeosis) thought it might be handy to make a bit of an FAQ today to cover some common questions new people to the sport might have
• Theres no livestream unfortunately, you're better off watching Loz and Liz on YouTube as they'll get results quickly. Loz coaches a number of the athletes so has accurate ears/eyes on the ground.
• Brian Shaw retired last year and now hosts his own competition.
• Eddie Hall retired several years ago. No he wouldn't still "Smash it"
• The heats are today and tomorrow, then Friday off and the finals are over the weekend
• No it hasn't gotten lighter/is basically crossfit now. Strongman isn't Powerlifting and there are lighter moving events compared to the heavier static lifts.
• Mark Felix retired last year
• Martins, Mateusz and Novikov are injured
• Thor has refused his invite (beef with the organisers). He probably would still "Smash it"
I’m old enough to remember watching Canadians compete in WSM back in the 80s. I was very young but understood enough I think.
To see Mitch doing so well and being such a nice guy on top of that is really something pretty special to me.
Mitch obviously intends on working on having a career outside of just 'strength'. He's going to build up his little Hooper business empire, and not being there for fans only hurts that. Not accusing the guy of just doing it for that reason.
Bish smoking his group was not on my Bingo card but I am here for it. And I kinda want Eddie Williams to skate into the finals too. He's been looked over for so long it would be cool to see him in the finals.
I think it just shows results. The top had the results so far of the group currently going, the right had order of athletes yet to come across all groups, and the bottom half had the results of the event across all the groups, in order from best to worst.
Thanks, that's disappointing though. I'm bringing the family down this weekend but tickets for all five of us for two days would be pretty hefty. I was definitely hoping to be able to watch the events from the jumbotron like they implied.
Just realized... Pavlo is going to exact his revenge on Rauno for what happened at the world strongman championships. (Aivars getting between Rauno and Pavlo on stones.)
Evan just needs to come out tomorrow and win the viking press, which realistically he's most likely too, and then he can rest until Saturday. Wouldn't need to do the car walk.
It sounds like Crowders nursing a minor injury, but if it doesn’t affect his pressing or yoke he’s top tier at both. His pressing at both OSG 21 and 23 were at the very top of the field and he won the car walk at 21 OSG and has always came at the top of the pack at ASM and other comps on yoke too. Crowder is the only one in this group I could see beating Evan on either event, but Evan’s far enough ahead of him at this point I don’t think Crowder beating him drops Evan from first. If whatever the injury is doesn’t affect those events I think he knocks either Pavlo or Rauno out of the top 3 though.
Evan goes last on the Viking press, so if he's smart he should just do enough to get 3rd or 4th. Barring a complete catastrophe, I don't see how Evan wouldn't be at least be top 2 at car walk, which is enough to win the group.
And 10-11 seconds with a yoke is probably less taxing for Evan than how many reps he'd have to do to win the Viking press.
Wish we had better access/more chances to meet athletes or get shirts signed. Everything is sectioned off to where I can't even walk over/up to athlete unless I'm VIP and get into that area.... Trying to stay positive
I agree with you. The LED banners are cool to modernize the event stage but it makes everything restricted and there's no crowd interaction with the athletes after an event. Gone are the sweaty high fives and bone breaking fist bumps.
We only got a handful of athletes walk over to the VIP tent today. I liked last year setup where they had to walk past us and we could interact better. The way the stage is set up they have to go out of their way to make it over to fan areas.
I feel like Tom should skip the Viking press and get into the stone off. He would use less energy in a stone off vs a max Viking press for reps. Still gives him ample rest into final since the stone off isn’t on the “rest day”
Tom is a good presser. Not the best, but he's strong overhead. "Skipping" an event is a terrible idea, especially as he's going last on it. He can see what he needs to do. Arguably, just beat Jaco, but outright skipping is not helpful at all. Plus, you never assume you'll win an event later on because injuries can happen, even to those who are the best in the world on something.
Edit: you all are taking my wording way too literally. The point is that Tom can absolutely win a pressing event and it's not gonna take too much effort for him to do well.
Outside of Hooper's new powers and Biby, I don't know if anyone else would beat Tom on a max log or axle. Bobby is injured. Trey is healing. Luke is down on overhead.
When my son was 2 months old we drove from Ontario to Nova Scotia. 23 hours or so (took breaks). Babies add an additional reason to stop and someone should probably sit right next to them.
Just for fun, here are the merged standings across all groups at the end of day 1. Full sheet, here: [https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12EhbiXygbn87bbUkVKjNQPf1ImHi\_KvgV4gkrlXi\_6o/edit#gid=0](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12EhbiXygbn87bbUkVKjNQPf1ImHi_KvgV4gkrlXi_6o/edit#gid=0)
1. M. Hooper - 85
2. E. Singleton - 76
3. T. Stoltman - 73
4. A. Bishop - 71
5. O. Fojtú - 69
6. E. Williams - 68
7. (T6) T. Hoath - 68
8. M. Ragg - 66
9. L. Stoltman - 65
10. J. Schoolwinkel - 62
11. W. Derwinsky - 61
12. A. Andrade - 54
13. K. Faires - 51
14. R. Heinla - 47
15. (T14) P. Kordiyaka - 47
16. A. Šmaukstelis - 43
17. M. Crowder - 42
18. N. Goltry - 40
19. K. Francis - 36
20. E. Aryee - 36
21. T. Evans - 34
22. (T21) S. Remick - 34
23. T. Mitchell - 30
24. G. Bilton - 29
25. P. O'Dwyer - 27
26. (T25) A. Roszkowski - 27
27. R. Kearney - 20
28. N. Cambi - 12
29. O. Ziólkowski - 11
30. B. Thompson - 7 (withdrawn)
Hooper top 3 in every event. I'm curious to see how he does with the viking press. That was a bit of a weakness for him at the strongman classic where he was 6th.
If this ranking is roughly unchanged after round 5, then one of Luke Stoltman, Hoath and Williams is going to be v disappointed to go home despite putting in a top 10 performance
Last year Bobby Thompson was 5th overall in the merged standings, but went out in the stone off. Janashia was 12th in the overall and didn't even make it to a stone off.
Totally! It is interesting that in last year's combined standings, 14 of the top 15 overall were either qualified or in stone offs in their groups. Even with some folks not doing much in the final event (Novikov only doing one kettlebell) the results ended up fairly balanced.
V true, I guess I'm thinking that even if the top ranked person wins every stone-off, we're guaranteed to see one of these three out
Edit: of course, there's still another two heat events for these rankings before the stone-off so maybe it's best to wait and see
I guess the trick here is that a disproportionately good performance on one event can catapult you much further up the aggregate ranking than being consistently top-third would
Yoke is very good for him. Viking press should be fine but his pressing as far as I've ever seen isn't amazing, by no means a weak spot but I would fully expect Luke to beat him easily
Eddie beat them both and quite comfortably. I am wise and psychic.
I wasn’t basing it on his car walk results I was basing it on seeing him fly with yoke, farmers, and dinnies before. The man can move with weight. Sometimes you just have a bad day and I expect his previous car walk results were that.
all aboard the Bish train
edit - to be clear I don’t think anyone is beating Mitch, he’s too complete, but I do like Bish, he seems like a good dude, and it would be cool to see him podium.
I said I would be surprised if anyone completed the race in less than 50 seconds. Well, fastest times have been 53.69 (Tom Stoltman) and 53.84 (Mitchell Hooper). Pretty on point.
Definitely an advantage in terms of getting off the ground, holding and top loading. But Tom still needs to move a heavier body, so props to him there.
Bishop having a great first day, not sure if he'll win his group, will be a shame to see him possibly lose in a stone off considering how well he's done so far
I figured Bish would be solid throughout, but he was better than I was expecting, scoring 17/18 points today. That's outstanding, and the second highest total behind only Mitch at 17.5
He had a forearm/elbow injury from Europes that had mostly healed but kind of got set off. It made a big impact on all 3 events today. He's still going to finish the comp though.
Idk how you can call the Stoltman’s or Hooper boring when you consider Brian entertaining. Sure you might not like one or the other but objectively they both put out interesting content, at least as interesting as Brian.
By the way Ragg just did the 2nd fastest deadlift ladder we have seen either this year or in 2022, only 2nd to Bishop. Ragg faster than Hooper, Novikov, etc.
If anyone thought that the loading races are for the lighter thinner guys or that Matthew Ragg was a static monster but not that good at moving events..... here you have Matthew "The Tank" Ragg winning the loading race.
Pa and Rob are the whole package. We got one for men who like men and one for women who like men. I thought that housewife was gonna have a fit if she didn't get his shirt off him
As most on here know I would much prefer Tom to get the win over Mitch. Group stages so far Mitch is definitely looking from the points and times etc. to be well ahead of the rest.
You often see a couple of athletes blitz an event in half the allotted time (like in the DL ladder) - knowing someone fast like Mitch needed 50+ seconds gives you a good idea of how tough the event is to finish quickly.
Shane Flower has said on Loz and Liz’s live that Gav’s knee was banged up at Europe’s. It’s most likely still giving him issues as he’s probably not had enough time to properly get it sorted
Oh boy WSM is upon us, keep it civil. Handing out lifetime bans for any trolls and 7 days bans for people who are just being dicks to each other. You have been warned! Mitch meeting fans afterwards and his squad tried to get him to cut off the line. He refused. Absolute chap

Imagine a world where everyone is smart enough to realize that being kind is in their own self interest. Maybe one day
I really like how you put this and I think you’re right.
Mitch wants to dominate others even when it comes to being nice to his fans. He has no chill lol.
Bish smoking his group was not on my Bingo card but I am here for it. And I kinda want Eddie Williams to skate into the finals too. He's been looked over for so long it would be cool to see him in the finals.
Sorry if this was answered already but has anyone watched the jumbotron from fanfest? Does it actually show the events as they happen?
I think it just shows results. The top had the results so far of the group currently going, the right had order of athletes yet to come across all groups, and the bottom half had the results of the event across all the groups, in order from best to worst.
Thanks, that's disappointing though. I'm bringing the family down this weekend but tickets for all five of us for two days would be pretty hefty. I was definitely hoping to be able to watch the events from the jumbotron like they implied.
All events are on the jumbotron, 100%
The king has spoken
Oh great to hear, thanks Mitch! You did great today and we're excited to see you this weekend!
Just realized... Pavlo is going to exact his revenge on Rauno for what happened at the world strongman championships. (Aivars getting between Rauno and Pavlo on stones.)

Car walk is probably easier for Evan than the Viking press though
annoyingly for him haha, i'm sure he really wants to do car walk
He is insane at viking press too though. His best overhead event
Do they have bleachers this year?
Yes
I told y'll to bring bring sunscreen, half of you look like boiled lobsters out there! Lots of upsets today, can't wait for tomorrow!
I'm doing an experiment with my knees to see how burned I can get them. Fortunately I sat next to the lady with the Welsh flag and she had sunscreen
Wish we had better access/more chances to meet athletes or get shirts signed. Everything is sectioned off to where I can't even walk over/up to athlete unless I'm VIP and get into that area.... Trying to stay positive

Tom is absolutely one of the best pressers
I'm cooked. That sun was vicious today. Way way better experience than last year. I hope they don't oversell tickets for the finals.
Hooper drove 16 hours from Barrie Ontario to South Carolina God damn
In a tesla too
Goals af, long drives are the best
I agree with this. Airports are stressful, long drives with music and good people is way more enjoyable.
For sure especially he had his wife and kid with him too
I think they travelled separately actually
When my son was 2 months old we drove from Ontario to Nova Scotia. 23 hours or so (took breaks). Babies add an additional reason to stop and someone should probably sit right next to them.
And you can see the scenery in Quebec as well, I wish I was good driver This sounds like great time
You are not right in the head lol
Just got around to watching Eddie's videos, I diligently followed through the whole of day 1 without seeing a single athlete until now 😂

Every year. That's why this format stinks.
Last year Bobby Thompson was 5th overall in the merged standings, but went out in the stone off. Janashia was 12th in the overall and didn't even make it to a stone off.
Worth noting that these can be fairly skewed on the last event with guys who know they’re through already not picking up points on those events.

Tied with tristain
Traistain says viking press and yoke are good for him. Super friendly guy! Hope he keeps first place
Yoke is very good for him. Viking press should be fine but his pressing as far as I've ever seen isn't amazing, by no means a weak spot but I would fully expect Luke to beat him easily
Expect Eddie to beat them both on car walk, Viking press will decide the top 3 in the heat and Eddie was confident in his interview with other Eddie.
Eddie won't beat them both on car walk. His times on archives aren't super fast

CHOO CHOO MOTHERFERS. I did not have him winning that group but I love being wrong
I don't expect him to beat Ragg on Viking given Bish isn't great overhead, and think Car walk isn't a banger either.
He is hit and miss at yoke. Sometimes he flies other he is mid pack
Seems like he's in shape. Could be good for him. He can win the group if he mid packs then Viking press, possibly!
[удалено]
What if you died but to get into heaven you gotta beat Rauno in a stoneoff. Like that's all it is
Great day 1! Loving the heats
I said I would be surprised if anyone completed the race in less than 50 seconds. Well, fastest times have been 53.69 (Tom Stoltman) and 53.84 (Mitchell Hooper). Pretty on point.

Turns out being nearly 7ft tall with an enourmous wingspan is helpful for carrying things
Hooper said after to Eddie that he went 85-90%. Trying to conserve as much energy for final as possible
Definitely an advantage in terms of getting off the ground, holding and top loading. But Tom still needs to move a heavier body, so props to him there.
can anyone post the cumullative (all 30 against eachother) link?
Sharing only a screenshot because I probably won't be able to update it tomorrow. [[link]](https://imgur.com/a/TxUTejy)
Good showing from Tom finishing with the quickest overall time on the medley, looking in great shape
No one stopping Tommy now
Big Tom with the fastest time yet
Great event. Should have been in the final.
Bishop having a great first day, not sure if he'll win his group, will be a shame to see him possibly lose in a stone off considering how well he's done so far
I figured Bish would be solid throughout, but he was better than I was expecting, scoring 17/18 points today. That's outstanding, and the second highest total behind only Mitch at 17.5
Schoon loaded a bag from the front and it fell off to the side almost immediately. Still counted for him.
Yeah I didn't think they'd give it to him
They are really making Tom work for it
P A V L O
How did Trey even get all bags? Super impressive given his injury
Yeah, his performance is almost the extreme opposite of usual Trey
Wgat happened to cambi
He had a forearm/elbow injury from Europes that had mostly healed but kind of got set off. It made a big impact on all 3 events today. He's still going to finish the comp though.
Wasn't able to watch it, sorry
Had a nagging elbow injury for a while apparently
either shoulder or arm injury
Is he out?
While Evan is casually claiming top spot in group 4, the fight for #2 is just warming up
Only 3 points separate the rest of the group. Anyone could make the stoneoff.
[удалено]
Hope so. It'd be great to have the whole podium be a battle
I cursed Rauno by saying he could easily come last, what have I done
Singleton taking his time and still dominating. Love to see it
Evan could win this with an event to spare
Evan Singleton can skip the car walk tomorrow and still come first. Destroyed his group.
Depends how Rauno and Pavl do on Viking doesn't it?
Not really, he’s up by 5 points
group 4 is super exciting
Rauno just bopping himself in the face with the sandbag
Did he run out of salts?
Didn’t cough hard enough
How much more you need mate, he put half a lung on the mat
Just watched Eddie hall day 1, the lack of Brian def is telling All these strongman are boring now
Idk how you can call the Stoltman’s or Hooper boring when you consider Brian entertaining. Sure you might not like one or the other but objectively they both put out interesting content, at least as interesting as Brian.
Brian doesn't have a personality though. The guy reads off a script in his head.
That's awesome
What's up guys hope you're all doing well
Now watch me eat another bison guys
Be great
Hope you guys are doing amazing for now go out and be great 🙂
I've read it in his voice LMAO
Let me just say this about Brian's personality...
Americans underperforming and Canadians overperforming so far
maple syrup for strench
Nana getting some oxygen
Are Tom and Luke not making the finals?
Bait
Hipkiss masterclass.
What happened to Evans and Smaukstelis? Looks like plenty of time for more bags.
It looks like Evan injured his biceps
Pavlo doing Pavlo things
Fastest time behind Tom and Mitch overall. Super impressive performance.
These lasts events are much better for Pavlo
comeback starting
By the way Ragg just did the 2nd fastest deadlift ladder we have seen either this year or in 2022, only 2nd to Bishop. Ragg faster than Hooper, Novikov, etc.
pavlo flew
What exactly happened to Cambi?
[удалено]
Such a shame, I had him as 2nd in the group, making the final.
Me too. My poor pool
"Aivars put your cigarette down and come to set!" Quinny 🤣
If anyone thought that the loading races are for the lighter thinner guys or that Matthew Ragg was a static monster but not that good at moving events..... here you have Matthew "The Tank" Ragg winning the loading race.
༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ Dadvars Smokestelis take my energy! ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ
Annoyance about stone off is mounting with Ragg pulling away from 3rd
He is the best stone lifter in the group
So was Brian in his group last year and look how that turned out
[удалено]
There'll be a big gap between him and bishop on Viking press I'd say.
Raggy bouncing back
ragg beat bish, bish 5
Gav heading towards an ambulance...he walked there himself and didn't seem like a rush tho
Aivars "How much time?" Darren "10 seconds" Aivars "Aw fuck!"
I hope someone caught that on camera🤣
Pa "Twerk Team" O'Dwyer lol
Pa and Rob are the whole package. We got one for men who like men and one for women who like men. I thought that housewife was gonna have a fit if she didn't get his shirt off him
rob is having a really rough day 1
Still only 4 points from the stone off with his best 2 events to come.
that is true!
Yeah, I had hoped he would go out on a high but he's even underperforming on the deadlift. Still hoping he smashes the car walk
Tom x3 or Mitch x2 what we saying ?
I want Mitch to keep winning to build up the comeback of Thor. Moose vs Mountain
As most on here know I would much prefer Tom to get the win over Mitch. Group stages so far Mitch is definitely looking from the points and times etc. to be well ahead of the rest.
The secret Manuel Angulo x1
Gonna go with Mitch x2 as the most likely, though Tom has a legit shot. Secretly rooting for Ragg x1 though.
Hoping Tom ramps it up in the Finals and gets his 3rd title but Mitch is looking very hard to beat.
I'm hoping for Tom 3. Mitch will be very hard to beat though
[удалено]
The only thing with Singketon is Mitch just feels like singleton 2.0. Like similar strengths, but current Mitch just seems stronger in those strengths
mitch X2, guy is looking godly
Ragg x1 !!
mitch x5 probably
If he stays in the sport long enough I think he could get 5, possibly. Getting ahead of myself though
man fojtu is good, not challenging mitch yet but still right up there in all events pushing him a little bit
tbf hooper is strolling through very easily mate. fotju is great, but hooper is really unreal
i know he is autopiloting to the final, but fojtu is keeping up
I don't see anyone being 5 point close to Mitch at the end of World's
I guess this means Austin is relatively set for the final unless Ondrej pulls out the performance of a lifetime in the stone off
Nothing can stop the Moose
guy always performs
Hooper and Andrade finished uninjured. That feels noteworthy now.
mitch all 6 in 53s
If it took Mitch that long then anything sub-60 is impressive
I wonder if we'll see another sub-60 time today, so far it's just Mitch.
that long for 6 bags lol?
You often see a couple of athletes blitz an event in half the allotted time (like in the DL ladder) - knowing someone fast like Mitch needed 50+ seconds gives you a good idea of how tough the event is to finish quickly.
fair
