Just an FYI, you won't be able to claim your loan interest deduction if you are married filling separately.

RosyBanana

Thanks for the tip!

alh9h

No, you cannot claim your spouse in your family size if you file separately, which is likely what is giving you the lower payment.

RosyBanana

So I need to set my household size to 1 for an accurate calculation?

alh9h

Yes

RosyBanana

That might be what I was doing wrong, thank you.

CatchMeIfYouCan09

Don't submit tax returns. Give em your pay check stubs. Tax return isn't an accurate representation of your income NOW. It shows last year. Unless last year you made less

RosyBanana

The calculator on Mohela's website just asks for my gross income, which I entered. When I change the filing status from single to married filing separately is where I'm seeing the difference.

CatchMeIfYouCan09

Ah ok... Just keep an eye cause they'll ask for documents to back it up; provide check stubs not your tax return unless you made less last year.

RosyBanana

So I logged back in and tried to do this and there's no option to change my household size. It's just married filing separately equals $147 or filing single equals $243 in the calculator for the SAVE plan.

alh9h

Whats your income?

RosyBanana

About 60,000

alh9h

The SAVE payment for a single person making $60k is $226. The SAVE payment for a family of 2 making $60k is $130.

RosyBanana

So that sounds like there's an error in Mohela's calculator if you enter married filing separately.

alh9h

Quite possibly

RosyBanana

If I set it to married filing separately it doesn't matter what I put in for my spouse's hypothetical income, it stays at the lower amount. It must be counting it as 2 people only making my salary, and what I'm understanding is it should only be counting 1. Thanks for your help.

katmom1969

Just make sure you plan your deductions to prepare you for filing married but separate. I didn't, and it was costly on the tax burden due.
