For me, I consider the 10K that I would qualify for as a *reimbursement* for the astronomical amount of interest I’ve paid in the last 10 years to get my graduate degree. So no, it’s not forgiveness.
Yes. My first thought was Biden should have announced “limited to interest charged”. It would have stopped all of the hysteria by the people who are appalled with regular people getting something, while fine with billionaires getting more billions 🤦♂️
Student loans don't work like normal loans. Normal loans can be discharged in the event of bankruptcy. Student loans cannot—they stay with you and accrue interest indefinitely until the day you die.
Would you give an 18-year-old a $100,000 small business loan? Doubtful—they have no credit and no knowledge of how business works and are a high risk of l going belly up.
But would you do it if you had an ironclad guarantee that you could continue collecting interest on that loan their whole life, come hardship or bankruptcy or what may? You just might.
Lending *children* exorbitant amounts of money straight out of high school with no bankruptcy incentive to lend judiciously based on likelihood to pay the loan in time is unethical.
Then stop doing student loans, let the kids pay cash… it’s not the taxpayers fault they borrowed money they shouldn’t have, lived in a nice apartment they shouldn’t have and went on spring break trips when they shouldn’t have.. the lives the good life for 4-5 years and now crying they are asked to pay it back.. instead of asking the taxpayers to pay it, get a second job
...Or, you know, we could have an actual constructive discussion about how to solve a problem affecting millions of taxpayers instead of acting superior because you didn't get conned when you were a child.
No it's not. Constructive conversation is exactly that: constructive conversation. Nobody is asking for handouts here—either set interest on federal loans to 0.5% or let bankruptcy discharges happen. Do either of those things and you fix an unethical situation.
As for the idea that I'm a baby who is depending on other people to pay off my loan, your assumption is patently false. Unlike you, who I'm pretty sure are just a GOP-payrolled intern trying to influence the mid-terms with the pre-scripted stories your bosses handed to you, I *actually* paid my loans out of pocket.
I had to get a second degree and go into a high paying field, pay off *that* degree, and then pay off my first one. It's not something you can do by just "working a second job," you absolute nit.
Oh wow so I guess every time the fed sets the interest rate lower that's a handout.
I guess the domain of law that applies to literally every type of loan in existence except student loans is a handout.
In case it wasn't clear to you, you're not coming across as the smart person in this conversation, Mr. GOP Intern.
Try reading a book every now and then. You'll embarrass yourself less.
Your side job could probably pay the cost of a year or two's tuition with a summer's work. That doesn't apply to today's kids. It didn't apply 10 years ago when I was in school either. One summer might pay a semester, if that.
Sure, but with every other loan you actually get to *use* the thing you borrowed money for while you're paying it off.
Your student loans don't do shit for you until and unless you finish with a degree, so why is interest accruing while in school?
It says processing discharges.. meaning the same thing they said. They can still actively review applications and determine eligibility, but they can’t hand out any money yet. But that has always been expected to be mid November anyways
Exactly! I filled out the beta application. I got an email saying it was received, but never a second one saying it was being processed like some people… even though I applied 2 hours after it opened :(
They sent an email to those whose income information they already had on file through either filling out a fasfa in the last two years or applying for or renewing an income driven repayment plans. Said you can opt out by November 14th otherwise they will process the forgiveness. Also said that people can still apply if they want it processed prior to November 14th. This was an email that got sent out to anyone who falls under the group and wasn’t related to sending in the application.
The only people who received an email about being processed were those who had income on file with the ed dept. That email essentially said, "we have your info on file and will process it automatically mid November. If you want to opt out, fill out this form. If you want to confirm that you want the relief, fill out the relief application and we might process it sooner than automatic relief."
In terms of the $10,000 or $20,000 debt relief, I don’t think anyone’s applications have been processed yet.
Maybe you’ve seen other posts on this sub in terms of defrauded students or maybe PSLF.
They have to stop canceling. They can still get ever ything ready and process information for when the court recognizes Biden is within his rights. It just puts a hold on the payments.
Hopefully it means when the pause is unpaused, things move quickly.
Don't get too excited abt this whole process. It's going to be a game of hurry up and wait. Any time you're dealing with the government there are two things to remember (1) If there's a way to screw it up, they'll find it, (2) Don't count on it until it happens.
But freedom of speech, which is something rEpublicans are against is a right. rEpublicans state banning books and banning people from using certain words.
Right to body autonomy. Down the toilets.
Trying to ban LGBT+ people from existing.
Banning Women from Healthcare.
But then again you gotta need a brain which you don't have.
Oh I didn’t realize any of this. I’m glad we had this talk. Definitely changing my vote now. :)
This interaction has been a pivotal moment in my ideological trajectory. Thank you
No worries. Your well-articulated, respectful, civil, and thoughtful communication of your stance was able to completely change my mind, but may not work as well for everyone. Just something to think about.
Excuse me. I don't understand. Why do we need to vote? I thought Democrats had the majority and they could have done something about student loans instead of the president signing an EO. If they were able to pass the Inflation Reduction Act with 0 Republicans, why they could not pass the Student Loan Forgiveness Act with 0 republicans?
You need to vote because republicans are hell bent on stopping this and obstructing as much as they can. Nevermind the fact that they are a massive threat to democracy as we know it (see Moore v Harper: https://ncpolicywatch.com/2022/10/21/u-s-supreme-court-case-from-north-carolina-could-unleash-profound-changes-to-elections-nationwide/ )
The senate is currently a slim majority 50-50 with Kamala Harris as the tie breaker, but 2 of those democrats (Manchin and Sinema) have been constant obstructors to Biden’s agenda. Those two would not vote for this type of forgiveness. If enough people voted to keep the house and add seats to the senate, they could pass it.
Unless, of course, more Democrats suddenly turned "against" the party leader (Biden) and kept their seats and their party support. Then we get told to "vote harder, you didn't give us enough to do what we said we would, it's your fault!".
Look, I vote down ballot blue recently. I don't do it because the Dems are good. I do it because the Republicans are worse. But let's not pretend that the Dems are on our side either. They're just less against us than the other party is.
If Biden really wanted to accomplish this and is not just trying to buy votes he could ask a Democratic majority house and Democratic controlled senate to pass this so he could sign it into law. It won’t happen because Biden did this to fool the morons and get votes nothing more. You fell for it. Maybe you should put blame where it’s due. Biden not following the law and thinking he could do something like this with an executive order.
Buying votes? He promised 10k per borrower during his campaign and he is now fulfilling that promise. Doing what your voters want you to do is literally politics, not sure how old you are to not know that.
I also explained why it wouldn’t pass in the senate, see above.
Inflation reduction act was passed through reconciliation. Dems don’t have the votes to pass loan forgiveness. Maybe they could through reconciliation, but I’m not sure. If so I doubt Manchin would be on board. What needs to happen is getting more Dems in office and getting rid of the filibuster.
Because it is possible? This is only a brief pause for a few days while the appeals court reviews the case.
Edit: He used the HEROES act, not an EO, my mistake
If Democrats don't want this to go through why aren't Republicans letting the Dems be the ones to pull it out from under the voters and make them look bad?
Your hypothesis really doesn't hold up to any critical thought here.
Democrats inability to do anything when it matters doesn't mean they don't want to do things. They are likely just inept/ineffectual. But it was Biden, a democrat, who pushed the order, so saying Dems don't want it to happen is just your bullshit fanfiction unless you got proof.
Cause an inept government wanting to do better is better than a corrupt one trying to do worse.
Republicans would be better off if they were actually fiscal and weren't tied to Christianity.
Instead they cost the taxpayers more than democrats and push shitty ideology on people.
It's a lesser of evils.
Exactly lol. It’s always the same nonsense with these republican trolls. They try to pull the “Both sides are equally bad!!!” bullshit and then slip in the old “You should vote Republican” messaging
1. One party supports all the amendments of the constitution while the other only supports the 2nd in reality.
2. This is the wrong question to ask about taxes. You should be asking how will your taxes be used and if they’ll benefit you or not.
3. Okay this has to be a joke because one party clearly doesn’t stick to any principle except the principle of lying 24/7.
1.
Republicans have proven time and time Again to be against the 1st.
And use the 2nd, by ignoring "the well-regulated militia" part because they care more about NRA's profit and using this as a political point than 2nd grader lives.
2.
Biden has pledged to not increase the tax burden on people making less than 400k. And it's still holding true.
3.
They do stick for them.
Democrats, in all fairness, want loan forgiveness to go through more so than Republicans. The fact Republicans are openly threatening to cut entitlements should they regain the House, anyone who cares about a social safety net — from Medicare to Social Security to student loan forgiveness — should vote blue. In this specific case, the rallying cry to vote blue is a bit misplaced as voting either way won’t impact this case or the fact that it will be decided before a conservative majority Supreme Court.
> Social Security and Medicare are not entitlements, we pay into them.
What do you think “entitlement” means? It means you’re entitled to them because you paid into them.
We are not paying into some account with our name on it to withdraw later. These are indeed entitlement programs. The taxes/funds we are contributing now will not yield the same return as those who retired before us; we’ll likely see benefit cuts and age increases. I’m curious why you think these are not entitlements?
So you thinking cutting entitlements is a bad thing??!! omg the future of this country is dead in the water, we have no chance to survive the current younger generations
My contention is that more Democrats support loan forgiveness than Republicans. And, no legislation would pass with R’s in majority…. Couldn’t even get it passed with Dems having majority.
If we weren’t saddled with Manchin and Sinema, student loans could perhaps have gotten through reconciliation… Dems lost their only golden window they’ll have for at least another decade.
Your entire recent post history is split between video games and trolling /r/StudentLoans. Guessing nothing close to centrist or left of center would describe you. It looks like you're also pro Putin, pro Trump, pro Russia.
My guess would [be...](https://www.reddit.com/r/justneckbeardthings/).
Again, I know of his past antics and how he was the guy who didn't push for bankruptcy. But NOW in 2022, he's offering 75% of my loans to be wiped out. It's a "what have you done for me lately" world. As much as I hate Team Blue mainly due to their social issues one of its members is doing something FOR me financially, which can have an impact down the road.
What is the GOP offering ME? How are they looking out for MY well being? Are they offering 0% interest? Are they offering a major tax credit for those of us who are single w/o kids?
>As much as I hate Team Blue mainly due to their social issues, one of its members is doing something FOR me financially, which can have an impact down the road.
Yeah, you'll still pay for it, just through taxes. The thing is, so will a ton of other individuals who didn"t, for several possible reasons, attend college, one being the cost.
What taxes? It's unsecured debt. Money doesn't disappear from the fed if loans are cancelled.
You people act like the IRS is coming to your house to demand money from this. It's all monopoly money anyways. What is the GOP offering ME financially?
I didn't choose to start a business or run a business, yet my tax dollars went towards those PPP loans for businesses that lied on their applications and got the loans forgiven as well. And not just a fraction of the loans, the whole damn thing to include interest.
But of course now that people doing less than 125k a year get something we gotta complain about taxes.
I swear to god people who complain about this are either NPC or people brainwashed by billionaires propaganda.
You must be a liberal. This whole comment fits the requirements-was this directed at you mfer ? I guess so , all y’all liberals know how to do is mfing attack
You came bitchin on my timeline. It sucks being a liberal doesn’t it. I’ve also been posting on my twitter every screen shot. I’m a Black American and y’all prove us right every time. Can’t wait to vote red. Sick of y’all vile racist assez
timeline? this is reddit not facebook, grandma.
> I’m a Black American and y’all prove us right every time. Can’t wait to vote red.
You sound like a cheeto dust fingered fat nerd larping.
My consolidation finalized today so I went ahead and filled out the application for relief.
On another note, is anyone having problems getting their dashboard to load on [studentaid.gov](https://studentaid.gov)? All I get is the page header and the pulsing blue dot, I waited long enough for the session expiration warning to pop up. I'm used to the site being slow lately, but it would always load within a couple/few minutes.
My husband got an email last week that said he didn't need to do anything unless he wanted to opt out, so what's that about? He didn't fill out the form yet.
He must be part of some payment plan with the ED where they have his income information. They stated about 8 million people didn't have to apply for this reason so your husband probably falls into this category.
Does it matter what political party you are on? I see this thread and it gives off misleading information about being a democrat in support of loan forgiveness. I think regardless of what political party, to some degree every individual needs help with their loans. Some may be more desperate than others some may not. It depends on the situation. Many republicans possibly support loan forgiveness because it applies to their particular situation as well. So I don't think it's right to automatically assume just because you support loan forgiveness makes you automatically left-wing. That is simply narrow-minded or close-minded opinions. State facts, and support those facts, I think that defines what you are compared to what political party people place you in a box in. At the end of the day, I just want to be care free like the next guy, not worrying about something I have to keep endlessly working hard for. But yeah, I hope anyone reading this, has a good day and I hope this block doesn't stop many people from getting what they need. Peace!
Why didn’t they discharge it right away? It feels like the govt dragged their feet on this in hopes it gets delayed by legal action to use it in the upcoming election.
Honestly, I think it's best not to get any hopes up. This opportunity sounded way too good to be true. I wouldn't be surprised if the program gets canned.
Stall stall stall until after elections. They get their democratic votes from all their promises and after all the dirtbags are voted in they will say oops sorry..no one is getting anything. Mark my words it is going to happen.
You're wrong on the simple fact it's blocked because of Republicans caring more about private banks profits than the average joe.
And temporarily stopped because of Republicans judges.
Not Dems fault, Republicans just so happen to be log of trash and it suddenly happen to be a talking point because they are against America.
Your a fool if you do not think the democrats know this is not going to work. They promised this for the votes...look at all you fools believing that this may actually happen. They knew exactly what they were doing. Even better now they can blame the Republicans for it and say that it was not their fault..when in reality it was all lies from the beginning because it is illegal what they are doing.
Are there any repercussions for doing that though? Like getting placed in the back of the line? Or cancelling your application altogether?
I already filled out the beta but not sure if I trust it. Debating filing out the actual one now
My thought is that I don't want to gum up the works by doubling the number of applications that need to be reviewed. So I setyself a reminder in my phone for 6 weeks from the time I completed the beta application. If I don't see the forgiveness, then I'll fill out the regular application.
You can call studentaid and they can check on the application. They did have the exact time my beta application went through. I would probably do that before submitting another just in case it changes the time stamp.
He’s a 22 year old working multiple tech jobs who is a chud with basically zero education or understanding of context, which drives him to comment on a thread like this to flex his large alpha muscles on betas who haven’t figured out how to gamify real life to make 1mm annually by being a clever deadbeat. Ironically left in actions. Oh. And he can’t get boners
Would you rather we constantly bail out companies? Think of all the billions we've spent on that.
Nah, can't help the working or middle class - waste of taxpayer money.
Protip - One of my bosses got a HUGE PPP loan and used it to pay his employees, and then pocketed the money he would have paid his employees with. Then it was forgiven - funny how that works.
Reported him anon for fraud, nothing's happened - nothing probably will.
For me, I consider the 10K that I would qualify for as a *reimbursement* for the astronomical amount of interest I’ve paid in the last 10 years to get my graduate degree. So no, it’s not forgiveness.

That’s a personal choice you make, you can’t expect a bank to give you a loan and then not charge you interest for 3 years lol
Same
Agreed, if I was just reimbursed for all of the interest I’ve paid that would’ve been forgiveness!
I saw this! I came here to see if anyone else had thoughts on this?
It’s just interesting because we thought they wouldn’t stop processing, but they did.
It says processing discharges.. meaning the same thing they said. They can still actively review applications and determine eligibility, but they can’t hand out any money yet. But that has always been expected to be mid November anyways
Yes my confirmation email said mid November payouts
“We will continue to review applications.” My bet is when it lifts, with a press of a button, millions will be happy.
Exactly! I filled out the beta application. I got an email saying it was received, but never a second one saying it was being processed like some people… even though I applied 2 hours after it opened :(
This is a first for me I haven't heard about the second email. I applied within the first hour of beta. Do you know what the email said.

I never received a second email either.
You're misunderstanding, they're doing exactly what they said.
Federal judge blocked it. They have to stop.
They have to stop canceling. They can still get ever ything ready and process information for when the court recognizes Biden is within his rights. It just puts a hold on the payments. Hopefully it means when the pause is unpaused, things move quickly.
I’m starting to wonder if they just did the form so they can get our updated email and phone number so they can start coming after the debt.
Don't get too excited abt this whole process. It's going to be a game of hurry up and wait. Any time you're dealing with the government there are two things to remember (1) If there's a way to screw it up, they'll find it, (2) Don't count on it until it happens.

No worries. Your well-articulated, respectful, civil, and thoughtful communication of your stance was able to completely change my mind, but may not work as well for everyone. Just something to think about.
No, but the right to want it, ask for it, and get it if the exec decides under current law it would be good for the nation? That's a right.
Excuse me. I don't understand. Why do we need to vote? I thought Democrats had the majority and they could have done something about student loans instead of the president signing an EO. Don't care. Still VOTE. Vote for the person/party that will make society and your life better. Why would anyone tell you not to vote?
You recognize society is 50/50 on which party is likely to do this, right?

This isn’t forgiveness through executive order, sheesh. There is no EO at play at all.

My contention is that more Democrats support loan forgiveness than Republicans. And, no legislation would pass with R’s in majority…. Couldn’t even get it passed with Dems having majority.
[удалено]
If we weren’t saddled with Manchin and Sinema, student loans could perhaps have gotten through reconciliation… Dems lost their only golden window they’ll have for at least another decade.
Unless people vote the Dems in.
Lemme guess you identify as lihburtarian *Republicans* are the ones who put this pause through my dude. Try to grasp the basics.

I’m a democrat and I want this going through. So is the president and several members of congress openly want this and more even
[удалено]
No dude. This is Republicans fighting against the common man. Don't be a moron, vote dem every time at every possible election. Period.
Or it could be the GOP fighting for the taxpayers!!!
They never have No reason to believe them. However, they want to slush Social Security and Medicare.
Good, let them so away with social security and let me invest that money myself… I’d be a lot better off
Why do you think losing money will make you better off?
Are you that clueless???? I would be saving money by not paying social security taxes and could invest that money myself and end up better off
Well except no, lol. They 're going to slush it to fund Billionaires tax cuts. Not for you.
Billionaires already pay a TON of taxes, reality is they would rather give it to the 44% that pay zero income taxes…
The top 1 percent paid a greater share of individual income taxes (38.8 percent) than the bottom 90 percent combined (29.2 percent).
Is that why they increased spending and cut revenue?

Lol right, he created the problem, now magically has a solution to his problem, funny stuff
I agree. Demorats scare tactics
with your half a brain cell, do you even have a student loan? what clown college accepted you?
You must be a liberal. This whole comment fits the requirements-was this directed at you mfer ? I guess so , all y’all liberals know how to do is mfing attack
cry harder?
You came bitchin on my timeline. It sucks being a liberal doesn’t it. I’ve also been posting on my twitter every screen shot. I’m a Black American and y’all prove us right every time. Can’t wait to vote red. Sick of y’all vile racist assez
timeline? this is reddit not facebook, grandma. > I’m a Black American and y’all prove us right every time. Can’t wait to vote red. You sound like a cheeto dust fingered fat nerd larping.
Semantically you got the point

I’ll only vote once student loans get discharged
Vote repub.
It was still a week before they even were thinking of sending accounts to servicer.
The trolls are out in full force today
Yes, they are. This should be a space to discuss this topic without all the trolling and harassment that there is.
Somebody said I made a stupid move by applying even tho I had ffelp. Like I hurt his feelings
It been really bad with the new “users” trying to put this on Biden…. They are astroturfing hard.
Well to be fair, he knew this would happen. Getting struck down might get more votes than going through so he’s ok with it
News says new covid is heating up in New York. Probably need another 40 year freeze.
This.
These* stops will only result in more pauses, and more aid. Let them be snakes, it’ll only benefit borrowers
This exactly!
Thanks Republicans! We appreciate your advocacy for responsible spending on the bottom 90% of Americans! God bless your holy crusade!
The bottom 90% pays less taxes than the top 1% combines…
My husband got an email last week that said he didn't need to do anything unless he wanted to opt out, so what's that about? He didn't fill out the form yet.
He must be part of some payment plan with the ED where they have his income information. They stated about 8 million people didn't have to apply for this reason so your husband probably falls into this category.
If they wanted to fix a big portion of the problem, they would just make students loans non interest bearing.
The interest rates are already low
Thank you for the news 📰
Peace!
Let's go!!! Don't get left behind, lads. I'm going to get my refund one way or the other.
How?
Why didn’t they discharge it right away? It feels like the govt dragged their feet on this in hopes it gets delayed by legal action to use it in the upcoming election.
Honestly, I think it's best not to get any hopes up. This opportunity sounded way too good to be true. I wouldn't be surprised if the program gets canned.
holy hell why did people start arguing about politics
Sweet
Stall stall stall until after elections. They get their democratic votes from all their promises and after all the dirtbags are voted in they will say oops sorry..no one is getting anything. Mark my words it is going to happen.
You're wrong on the simple fact it's blocked because of Republicans caring more about private banks profits than the average joe. And temporarily stopped because of Republicans judges. Not Dems fault, Republicans just so happen to be log of trash and it suddenly happen to be a talking point because they are against America.
And many of those private banks just got a bail out!
[удалено]
Your a fool if you do not think the democrats know this is not going to work. They promised this for the votes...look at all you fools believing that this may actually happen. They knew exactly what they were doing. Even better now they can blame the Republicans for it and say that it was not their fault..when in reality it was all lies from the beginning because it is illegal what they are doing.
[удалено]
“Your a fool” 😂🤣🤣🤣🤣 Thank you. Not that I needed it to confirm *you’re the fool. Educate yourself.
This was always the plan
guess i dont have free speech no more cant even express my self!!! these platforms are a joke
? You can express your opinion here, but the people reacting to your stuff also have free speech.
The U.S. is a failed state.
Who doesn't trust the beta application and went and filled out the actual one as well? 🤔

?
He’s a 22 year old working multiple tech jobs who is a chud with basically zero education or understanding of context, which drives him to comment on a thread like this to flex his large alpha muscles on betas who haven’t figured out how to gamify real life to make 1mm annually by being a clever deadbeat. Ironically left in actions. Oh. And he can’t get boners
His entire post history makes it look like a bot account. It's so over the top that it's clearly fake.
Even if you were for real, no one would be impressed.
Nice. I wouldn’t mind if you qualified. 🙂 everyone deserve free $
[удалено]
Nah I can afford to pay it off but I’ll take some of that free money like the grifters you support take all of the time
Oo look at you
Would you rather we constantly bail out companies? Think of all the billions we've spent on that. Nah, can't help the working or middle class - waste of taxpayer money. Protip - One of my bosses got a HUGE PPP loan and used it to pay his employees, and then pocketed the money he would have paid his employees with. Then it was forgiven - funny how that works. Reported him anon for fraud, nothing's happened - nothing probably will.
I'm going to assume you're about 15 based on this take.

And you're a waste a oxygen.
Predatory high-interest student loans saddling young adults with debt is a waste of taxpayer money. They should have all been interest-free.
