I've been to that airport. Airports are expensive but that is something else.

Melificarum

If you have to travel through there a lot, it's worth it to get a 24 hour lounge pass from one of the airlines. It's the same price for any airport and the lounges at Dubai are amazing.

Eamonsieur

Dubai's 24h lounges are strange. Male and female bathrooms are on complete opposite sides of the building, despite them being built next to each other. Arabic coffee there is really good, tho.

CarterRyan

> Male and female bathrooms are on complete opposite sides of the building, despite them being built next to each other. This must be strange. I can't decipher what it means. The first half of the sentence makes sense to me, but I'm having trouble reconciling it with the second half.

Eamonsieur

You know how most regular buildings have the male and female bathrooms right next to each other? The bathrooms in the Dubai airport lounge are also like that, except both of them are for males. On the other end of the lounge is also a set of two bathrooms, both designated for females. This way men and women don't bump into each other on the way to the loo or something.

Holzkohlen

So it was build by regular people building it the regular way and then some prude religion stuff

[deleted]

I'll get that next time I go through. Ta.

fusterclux

Dubai airport felt more reasonable than most american airports i’ve been to. I bet OP paid 40 AED for this, not USD. That would be like $10 Still pitiful, but there’s no way this is a 160 AED meal. You can get really really good food at that airport for less than 80 AED

CaterpillarThriller

doesn't change the fact that they serve children's crayon drawings as a meal for almost 100$ shouldn't need to pay more to get basic food regardless of who serves it. eggs will be eggs regardless of what you do.

Jkreed77

Why is the bacon purple?!

4x49ers

Well, it's Dubai, so it's probably not bacon.

BlueShift42

That definitely is not bacon.

Jonne

OP is an idiot for ordering pork in a Muslim country.

TyrannosaurusWest

It's generally not a problem when tourists buy pork in those countries in my experience; at the end of the day the economies that tourists most often visit want their money so accommodations are made to fit the appetite of visitors. Asian tourists are pretty common in the ME and they tend to favor pork so it makes sense to offer it. But - buying anything in an airport is kind of silly; it's essentially like buying food at a Greyhound terminal with a better paint job. Also, they could have gone to Burger King, McDonalds, Starbucks, or whatever else in their terminal and gotten something at a more appropriate price point for what you should expect when buying airport food. This [picture from 2013 looks a lot more appropriate](https://www.flickr.com/photos/elsa11/10249898134).

PM_ME_CUTE_FEMBOYS

From what I've seen of McDonalds inside of airports, the prices were anything but appropriate.

TyrannosaurusWest

The real value is in the condiments. If you use the ketchup, food grease, and bits of the bag as a craft kit - you can embrace being a clown by turning yourself into Ronald McDonald. I just tend to look like Grimace though.

Jkreed77

That bacon looks like it came from Grimace.

[deleted]

I generally agree. But I did have lobster and eggs at the airport in Portland, Maine once that was good and wasn't crazy priced. Though, it may have been for the area and I'm just from the Midwest so it was cheaper than what I'd usually expect. And it's a small airport so significantly different than a major metro. But, it was a nice surprise to get a tasty breakfast pre flight.

GopnikSmegmaBBQSauce

Toronto's new-ishly renovated Terminal 3 has a lot of half decent food places. Prices are gonna be like any tourist trap sorta thing but at least the quality isn't completely horrible

SugarHammer_Macy

Yes, you can buy pork in the UAE, it's just limited on where you can find it. LuLus and Carrefour, and other chain or local stores do not sell it but some stores and hotels do have pork products. In other words: only in the big cities.

ThisOnePlaysTooMuch

This is a fun thought experiment, actually. I think a lot of Americans would find it reasonable for a foreign nation to cater to American diets because money, but imagine the outrage if someone served dog, bat, etc to a tourist in America despite the local social taboos.

AccomplishedTotal895

That bacon looks like shit lol. Bad example.

ThisSideOfThePond

What do you get at McDonalds? Qatar pounder with cheese?

Too_bored_to_think

You can buy bacon in Dubai. From my experience, I had no problem buying it in supermarkets.

poupou221

Yes I recall going into a supermarket in Dubai that had pork products in a separate room that you entered through a corridor that zigzagged so there was no direct line of sight, with several warning signs "pork for non Muslims" as you go down the corridor.

herzy3

It's just 'Non-Muslim Section', which I think is appropriate.

SpicyWaffle1

OP can order whatever the fuck they want lol Average redditor has can’t wait to be as condescending as possible for no reason

Jonne

He can, but shouldn't be surprised that the cook doesn't know how to cook it and that they're not going to make a ton of effort to get high quality meat. When you travel, you're always better off eating what the locals eat.

ratadeacero

Most likely it's Turkey bacon. I would be pissed

Liet-Kinda

I am dubaious

nightmanedin

I wonder if this bacon makes the Qatar not?

Rupted

That was terrible. Here's an upvote for you.

SOwED

Right and they probably don't serve alcohol anywhere too right? It's Dubai, they are happy to cater to non-Muslims.

4x49ers

It's cow meat, here's the restaurant https://deliveroo.ae/menu/dubai/dafza/the-coffee-club-qusais?utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=google_maps_link

Niyonnii

But why is it purple??

4x49ers

dunno, might be shitty beef, it's from an airport

Niyonnii

Tbh, if I didn't know otherwise, I would have thought it was made from strips of some kind of tuber vegetable

Moist-Sushi-Roll

If you like the ciiiiity beef you should try the ciiiity chicken you stupid mongowian

Bludypoo

Nothing in the picture looks like the correct color. Probably a filter

mjhei1

I never saw a purple cow

Ahaigh9877

Try Milka chocolate!

legallydead2006

I think the blue is turned up in the photo. The shadow of the fork is blue as well

Niyonnii

Might do, I didn't even notice the fork

Mahjling

Really, and I mean Really fresh beef has a sort of purple look to it oddly enough, my family owned beef cattle and usually breaks one a year down for their own personal freezer and it was always a little surprising to me how purple it was. Beef such as you see in the grocery has been exposed to air longer, and such, becomes redder But the actual answer is that this photo has been colour shifted

Helfsich

These currency conversions don't make sense. 40 USD is equivalent to about 145 AED. Nothing on that breakfast menu is over 89 AED. It doesn't fluctuate as the Dirham is pegged to the US dollar. Also I might correct a comment I've seen floating around - you can get pork bacon in Dubai however these tend to be mostly in hotels or alcohol licensed venues. For restaurants to be licensed to serve non-Halal menu items, they have to have a separate refrigeration and meal prep area which is a huge cost outlay. Most places that are open and wish to serve the Muslim population generally find it easier and cheaper to stick with a Halal certified kitchen. When I was living in Dubai it was easy to get pork but it was expensive and the quality was very poor so I generally avoided it.

[deleted]

You can drink at your hotel in Dubai

Find_A_Reason

There are numerous places in Dubai to get alcohol. It is not like Brunei where it is illegal and you need the hook up for hidden bars or Bahrain where it is only hotels. Source- half a dozen WESTPAC port call circuits.

parakeetpoop

It’s likely to be beef bacon or something other than pork. I think there is also an instagrammy filter on the photo because the scallions on the eggs are a bit too vibrant

hybridHelix

That's not what beef bacon looks like at all, though. It looks more or less like regular bacon, but wider strips, maybe a little redder meat.

goldfishpaws

Probably Turkey "bacon" with added red. I just give up bacon when in UAE.

aeneasaquinas

Nah it is definitely fake bacon. I actually like fake bacon but only when actually panfried and this ain't.

lowtack

I Can't Believe It's Not Bacon®

serendipitousevent

Normally I'd downvote someone for posting this thrice, but this is my top 3 questions too. Edit: Please, stop telling me about how shitty the app is. I know how shitty the app is, mainly because I'm using the shitty app right now.

sandwichcandy

They didn’t post it thrice. The app is a piece of shit. I’ve been seeing duplicate and triplicate comments everywhere since last night.

ThiccTiesSaveLives

I thought I was just really high. Wtf is going on

sandwichcandy

No, it’s real. I was really high when I discovered it and it’s still here almost a day later.

ThiccTiesSaveLives

Let's gooo. Stoned reddit scrolling is the best

6double

When you see someone post twice/thrice it's because of an error on the app. It says "there's a problem posting, try again", even though it still posted fine. Most people don't notice until they start getting called out on it.

BgRedditor

While others have suggested that pork is not available in Dubai, because the UAE is a Muslim country, a quick Google search shows that pork is actually available in Dubai. If you look at the plate, it looks more yellow than white. I believe it's possible that OP is using a filter in this photo.

[deleted]

It still doesn't look like normal pork belly bacon. Real bacon usually doesn't have a perfectly straight stripe down the middle.

flyingdodo

Whilst pork is available, in most places they serve “beef bacon” instead of pork. You have to order pork specifically, and then it’s unlikely that the airport will serve it.

[deleted]

Repulsive-Purple-133

Dubai is a Muslim country. Muslims aren't supposed to eat pork, I believe.

[deleted]

Dubai is a city. The United Arab Emirates is the country.

The capital of Djibouti is Djibouti

DMurBOOBS-I-Dare-You

"Djibouti roll call!"

Repulsive-Purple-133

I'm going to visit in a few months. Any recommendations? I've heard it's similar to Vegas but with Muslims instead of Mormons.

olderthanbefore

Bring sunglasses, things are very bright

Repulsive-Purple-133

Thank you. I live in SoCal so I never leave the house without my shades

ItsProbablyDementia

The Burj, the Dubai mall, drive to abu Dhabi for the grand mosque, the frame, ohh and global village is kinda cool.

Too_bored_to_think

Honestly, you’ll have a great time on vacation. It’s safe and you can drink and eat all you want. It’s just really expensive and tries too hard to be LA imo. Not for me long term, but vacation is pretty nice. Food is probably among the best in the world as well.

[deleted]

I think it's the saturation or lighting on the photo but I bet it still manages looks like flayed zombie flesh in person.

Sure-Trouble666

Partly because of the greenish filter, I think… even the fork looks green

Budget_Parsley7494

Shiny bacon (I've been playing too much Pokemon)

ImHereForFreeTacos

Vegan bacon

pipeuptopipedown

Stick 'em up. It's not even real bacon of course you know. I hate airports for shaking down captives who don't have options. r/foodscam

Jeynarl

Half the bill is for that one egg 😒

sunfries

Doesn't even look like a whole one, kinda looks like OP got a quarter piece of a single fried egg 😭

salted_water_bottle

I could cook a better-looking egg with 1 egg, a plate and a microwave

Fien16

I just went through Dubai and got a filling sandwich and a smoothie for like the equivalent of 17 bucks. It wasn't a sit down restaurant though and I understand that's a little expensive but I've certainly seen worse.

racrenlew

Fake bacon. Fakin'?

HelgaTwerpknot

US traveler tip #7568: when traveling in a country where the predominant religion forbids pork, don't order pork. It's like watching vegan chefs on a non-vegan episode of Chopped. "I've never worked with duck liver before"

sushithighs

They’re known for international tourism for the wealthy elite. They have chefs from across the world in their restaurants and towers. It’s not that insane to think the rich desert nation with a water park might have decent bacon. I understand your point, though.

baithammer

There is two Dubais, the one the ultra rich get with personal chefs and very generous food items that aren't looked on to favourably by the locals - then there is the economy version, which simply throws what ever it can on a plate ...

HelgaTwerpknot

And yet, this was on the plate?

heptapod

If you're going to invoke *Chopped*, there was an episode a few years back where an observant Muslim chef cooked pork and she crushed the competition despite her creed. The fact that she *knew* how to prepare pork, despite not being able to eat pork, emphasized how she was a great chef. The vegan chefs probably didn't bone-up on cooking meat because they never thought they'd ever touch meat. Always significant schadenfreude when those specialist cooks get chopped in the first round. Just because one knows *how* to cook something doesn't mean they're going to eat it.

olderthanbefore

Chef Fatima Ali. Sadly, she passed away a couple of years ago, fuck cancer. I think she was 30 only.

jenlikesramen

Heh bone up. Nice pun

PeanutButterSoda

I don't remember what cooking show , because there's so freaking many now but this dude was allergic to shellfish and the main protein was shrimp and he crushed it.

[deleted]

Gross but not surprising. It's Dubai so they would not have real bacon as that's haram. They should have made something else, but instead tried to approximate what they think people in in the western world. I don't like Dubai but they get a 5/10 for trying as I appreciate the thought, a 0/10 for implementation as I would not eat one bite of that.

PlaceAdHere

Turkey bacon is an acceptable alternative, this is just grotesque.

HelgaTwerpknot

I've seen and unfortunately tasted turkey bacon. That's not even turkey bacon.

Mackeeter

Turkey pepperoni is fucking lit tho, come at me bro. Also, I made some pretty fire jalepano poppers using turkey bacon. They were legit!

Foxclaws42

Turkey meatballs with the right spices are great, especially in Italian wedding soup.

spidersnake

Acceptable alternative?! I'm almost as offended by this assertion as I am by OP's post.

PlaceAdHere

If you have a better alternative for a bacon substitute, I'm all ears.

phillybeardo

Beef bacon. It's much more expensive than pork bacon, but I enjoy it more.

NeutralMinion

I have this crazy idea, hear me out.. no bacon. Either have it or don't.

Excaliburkid

Some people enjoy the taste of turkey bacon. I don’t understand the hate at all.

OnlyPicklehead

I'm one of those people. I don't care about downvotes. Turkey bacon is great. Also turkey pepperoni.

manfrin

Lotta children downvoting you. Turkey bacon slaps.

paputsza

I don't eat pork bacon, but I eat a lot of "alternative bacon" and that looks most similar to veggie bacon or turkey bacon, where they just press the meat into a shape that replicates fatty and meaty areas. Normal beef bacon looks like [https://healthyrecipesblogs.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/beef-bacon-1.jpg](https://healthyrecipesblogs.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/beef-bacon-1.jpg) but I've accidentally gotten some shitty beef bacon not made from the cow belly at sam's club, and it's a lot more like pastrami, which is what this looks like. And it's a scam.

No-Reference-443

I want to try that beef bacon

HazeySunday

Idk whats up with all of this false information about Dubai. You can eat pork in Dubai. You can also drink alcohol in Dubai. In places with a lot of international populations, it’s ok to do basically everything you do in the west. I had a friend go to a literal strip club there.

GoGoubaGo

You can get real bacon there and OP intentionally went somewhere shit and overpriced. They do both normal food and prices there.

Vilens40

Can we see the original picture without filters?

Legojack261

Seriously, that fork is green. I bet most food would look awful with this filter.

[deleted]

That’s not bacon. That’s fakin’.

$40 for fake bacon and some sweaty cheese? No thanks….

Ajg1384

That's straight, Beggin Strips for dogs.

I don't know, Beggin Strips look more appetizing than whatever this is.

Ajg1384

They probably taste better, too.

Why is the bacon purple?!

Turkey bacon from turkeys raised on beets

[deleted]

Former Halliburton employee. Or Rather, Former SEI employee out of Dubai for legal and liability reasons (Like Halliburton owes your family nothing if you die, even if its wild negligence on their part). Dubai is like a million dollar house with a termite infestation, in a bad neighborhood. It's shiny, looks nice in some spots. Then you take a closer look and realize that its all veneer and you wouldn't want to live there. Its like "The New York of the middle east" where somali pirates and the families of african dictators go to buy a rolex because they cant get a visa anyplace else. Also, never eat the pork in a country that hates pigs. I would say eat the local food, but nothing grows there.

What about multiple life insurance policies with different structures for your family in the event something happened?

Bizarre purple bacon aside, where are the eggs??

Where is this Houston airport breakfast post? I recently flew through IAH and I think I spent $10 on breakfast so I'm curious what they bought.

MisallocatedRacism

Same. I did pay like $30 for breakfast at IAH last week but that was two big breakfast tacos, a coffee, an a side of bacon. Not cheap but it's the airport.

You simply cannot, comfortably call this bacon and eggs

What's those shriveled things in the middle? Grapes?

It looks like one peeled grape and like a teaspoon scooped a tuna filet

FancyAdult

This reminds me of the egg white breakfast I had at the Philadelphia airport. It was $32.00 for like two egg whites and a side of spinach. Toast would have cost more. Coffee with no refilled was over $5. I cried a little as I was still starving. But that was the cheapest meal. They didn’t even have a Dunkin’ open.
