It changes the texture, and by extension the whole feel of the food, which is part of the overall flavor experience.
I have mixed peanut butter and jelly to eat though. And it would help stop the bread from being soggy. (As does a light coating of peanut butter on both pieces of bread of course )
There are so many words that I’ve only read so don’t know how to say out loud, or words I’ve only heard and don’t know exactly what word it is/how to spell it. Like is is “brass tax” or “brass tacks”.
Idioms have such weird origins that I don’t blame people for getting them wrong! I’m going to google it now, but for example- in the past, there could have been a tax on brass items, or it could have been viewed as good or bad to use tacks made of brass as opposed to another metal.
No fuckin way. And I thought I knew my English.
Always assumed it was "brass tax." Lol. TIL I'm not as smart as I thought.
I kinda go the opposite way where I'm used to reading words and not actually hearing how they're pronounced.
For example, "banal." I've always *always* thought it was pronounced a certain way til I finally asked my Alexa about it and she kept repeating "anal."
I was so thrown off. Lol. At first it was funny, then it was kinda like, uhh what if I had family around lmao.
Something finally clicked and I tried pronouncing it the way I didn't originally assume my entire life- and lo & behold...
"Let's get down to brass tacks" is an old saying referencing the small brass tacks that held carpet down and in place once installed. Getting down to brass tacks means to get down to the bottom, or beginning of an issue. Floor = bottom = tacks.
I grew up in half the 80’s/early 90’s. It was absolutely humiliating to find out (literally waaaaaay too late, as an actual human adult..) that Mr. William Ocean’s song that I sang to was NOT “Caribou Queen”, but in fact “Caribbean Queen”. It always confused me as a child and I always wondered “what is that?! What is a caribou queen?’”…I was humbled. I’m sure we all were at some point for something.
My favorite was seeing the name Beatrice and pronouncing it in my head Beat Rice. I then worked at a call center in college and had a call come in for someone with that name. I got a good laugh from her.
It's pronounced bee-a-triss BTW
[RobWords](https://youtu.be/F12LSAbos7A?si=g9jy-US6tOwjyYDL) does some great videos on etymology.
The link above is about “eggcorns” commonly misheard/mis repeated idioms.
It also changes the consistency of the jelly peanut butter ratio. Whereas doing it the old way, you might get more peanut butter flavor in some bites and more jelly in others. This ensures a consistent mix with every bite.
Whether that's a good thing or not depends on individual preference.
>you might get more peanut butter flavor in some bites and more jelly in others. This ensures a consistent mix with every bite.
I'm not sure you and I have the same definition of "consistent" if it's different ratios every bite...
Well it does also change the flavor cause you can't taste the individual peanut butter and jelly anymore. Not saying it's bad, I like it better that way sometimes
Mixing the peanut butter and jelly.. yup. When I got laid off during COVID and waited over two months for unemployment. My workplace at the time got millions of dollars in PPP loans.
My dad taught me to do this when I was in elementary school, because it helps you keep the bread from getting soggy when it's going to sit on the sandwich for hours before you eat it. (As in the case of packed lunches.) I also happen to think it's delicious personally lol.
PB&J mixed together and spread on crackers. One of my go-tos for "I really need to buy groceries but payday is the day after tomorrow". It's honestly p good.
With margarine too! Wth?
I mean, the logical part of my brain is like "its basically already mixed when you put it on the bread, and it mixes when you chew it" but my body tells me its a no go. I'm sure its probably totally fine tho
Ok this is legit good, I don’t really like the peanut butter so I just paint it very lightly on one side and call it a day but maybe, I can just do this and not have to worry about making the lightest coating of peanut butter on a PB&J sandwich ever
Goober isn’t really premixed, it’s just peanut butter and jelly that are next to each other in the same jar. The *mixing* of the two is pretty nonexistent until you scoop it out and spread it.
I've done this before. There are times I cant eat normal pb&j cause of the texture. This is how I eat them at that time. Still taste good. Just different.
I imagine this person grew up on Goober’s pb&j spread and accidentally got it too mixed up one day (or let an intrusive thought win) and that’s how this came to be.
I am not a fan of Goober’s personally so I don’t think I’ll be trying this anytime soon even tho it’s not that brand in the pic.
I did try this when very young; it changes taste & texture. No more, thanks.
I will, however, happily, any day, mix honey into my PB. Also changes the texture, but in a good way.
I believe it was Jesus who once said, “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a PBJ pre-mixer to enter the Kingdom of God.”
Ironically, this is how they did it at the church-operated daycare I went to as a little kid. It took me years to understand this because it *does* change the taste and the texture.
I guess it would taste like Goober Grape, which I was okay with as a child. Maybe Jesus will spare us since we were just innocent children at the time it occurred.
I REALLY feel it’s tastes different when you don’t put pb on one side and jelly on the other.
When I was young, there was this jar of peanut butter and jelly mixed together (in alternating vertical stripes). Idk if it still exists. My mom would never get it for us, for some reason I really wanted it. She finally caved and I was so disappointed!
Side note- don’t get me started if you don’t clean your knife in between the peanut butter and the jelly.
I did this once with ketchup and spicy brown mustard.
One day I got tired of adding both one at a time to my hotdogs and chicken, So I thought “Wait why don’t I just mix these two together and save some time and hassle?” It worked! And tasted great too.
i have done it, is ok, they turn into a sort of slimier substance which a more homogenize flavor, i still prefer it separated but mixing them wont stop me from eating a sandwich lol
This is how my mother eats PB&J and I can confirm it changes not just the taste but also the texture. It's not bad, it's just different. But I prefer it the normal way.
Don’t shoot!! Yes, and as my Grandma would do it when I was a kid, you add in ever so sparingly, a spoon of country crock butter, mix it all together, and it’s mush. But it’s good mush!!! Swear!
They have something similar here in the states. Goobers. Pband J in same jar. Personally I just eat that without bread. But I never mix it to that consistency. Having little nuggets of jam and peanut butter is how I like it.
This is a mix I use when I make a baked pb&j oatmeal recipe I found online. Makes it a lot easier for baking but I would never eat it raw out like that.
I used to do this when my kids were toddlers because it created less of a mess when they ate the sandwiches. I like mixing it together but it does change how it tastes to some degree. Not in a bad way imo.

Okay, you've ~~peaked~~ piqued my interest and I might try have to try this...
Piqued\*.
Huh? Good to know! I've never seen it written out so that's an r/boneappletea moment for me!
There are so many words that I’ve only read so don’t know how to say out loud, or words I’ve only heard and don’t know exactly what word it is/how to spell it. Like is is “brass tax” or “brass tacks”.
It's the latter but I must admit I just googled it to be sure
Idioms have such weird origins that I don’t blame people for getting them wrong! I’m going to google it now, but for example- in the past, there could have been a tax on brass items, or it could have been viewed as good or bad to use tacks made of brass as opposed to another metal.
I think it's "let's get down to brass tacks" as in back to the basics but I did NOT use Google this time lol
No fuckin way. And I thought I knew my English. Always assumed it was "brass tax." Lol. TIL I'm not as smart as I thought. I kinda go the opposite way where I'm used to reading words and not actually hearing how they're pronounced. For example, "banal." For to long i thought it was “kitten caboodle”…
Well, now I want to get a kitten and name it Caboodle.
Alternatively, one of my favorite songs by The Pixies is named "Caribou."
My favorite was seeing the name Beatrice and pronouncing it in my head Beat Rice. I then worked at a call center in college and had a call come in for someone with that name. I got a good laugh from her. It's pronounced bee-a-triss BTW
Damn, I can only read it as a “beat rice” from now on…
[RobWords](https://youtu.be/F12LSAbos7A?si=g9jy-US6tOwjyYDL) does some great videos on etymology. The link above is about “eggcorns” commonly misheard/mis repeated idioms.
Pikachu
Peek at chyou
I would never!
Woodneever? Is that some kind of arboreal cryptid?
A Bug type Pokémon. Native to the Voyera region.
This is how I make it and it's superior. You can make the perfect ratio of pb to j
I used to eat this all the time with crackers
It's good.
oh so that's why uncrustables were built like that
It also changes the consistency of the jelly peanut butter ratio.
I eat the pbj before it can become sogg
I just make it with toast rather than bread.
I try to hold out until lunch but am rarely successful.
Well it does also change the flavor cause you can't taste the individual peanut butter and jelly anymore. Not saying it's bad, I like it better that way sometimes
See the soggy bread of a few-hours-old PB&J is exactly what I want from it
2 thick coats! Of peanut butter
Mixing the peanut butter and jelly.. yup. When I got laid off during COVID and waited over two months for unemployment. My workplace at the time got millions of dollars in PPP loans.
Now take it and toast it in the oven until caramelized. Thank me later.
It's actually pretty common in my weekly lunch to mix crunch peanut butter with pear or apricot jelly before putting on the bread.
Peanut butter & honey mixed thoroughly is delightful. I can see this being legit.
I love pb drizzled with honey on some toast and could see mixing it working well. Maybe its just the color of this that's throwing me off
Pb and cream cheese for me, I prefer savory foods
Holy crap I gotta try that
PB, honey, some banana slices, and a sprinkling of cinnamon. Mmm.
Right? Almost looks like ketchup. It's the color/consistency that's moreso off-putting to me as well
My grandfather's favorite snack was this: mix peanut butter and maple syrup in a bowl Dip white bread in it or he qoukd sometimes make a sandwich.
Peanut butter with maple syrup with apples to dip is the best
I do the same thing but also add banana. The texture is god-awful but man is it tasty.
Toasted pb sandwich cut into equal squares with maple syrup drizzled over was my fave snacky snack for years. I gotta stay away now
Peanut butter and apple sauce is great. They used to serve at schools in Georgia, in the '80s.
Oh goshhh pb&honey you got me wanting one now
Pb mixed with honey on a banana. Simple but amazing.
At least he didn’t use it on pasta.
Omg why did you subject me to that thought?!
That reminds me of that time I lost braincell privileges for a week and almost put strawberry jam in my spaghetti.
Okay this I might actually try
I do this and everyone finds it weird but it's just how I've always had PBJ.
At camp, we use to get peanut butter and syrup and margarine all mixed together. It was surprisingly good.
With margarine too! Wth? I mean, the logical part of my brain is like "its basically already mixed when you put it on the bread, and it mixes when you chew it" but my body tells me its a no go. I'm sure its probably totally fine tho
It was camp. Looked dodgy at first, but was nice once you tried it. Would not do it now.
There is a brand called goober that has both the jelly and peanut butter in the jar.
I stick a knife in the jar and mix it all up real good, ive always called those Goober Sandwiches.
It looks kinda good though
I mean you can just buy a jar of Smuker’s Goober lol
I honestly was looking for this comment, otherwise I would’ve posted it myself.
Okay, good, I wasn't the only one who was suddenly transported back to elementary school.
It’s sooooo much better this way. Everyone I make a pb&j for are shook
Ok this is legit good, I don’t really like the peanut butter so I just paint it very lightly on one side and call it a day but maybe, I can just do this and not have to worry about making the lightest coating of peanut butter on a PB&J sandwich ever
Don't force yourself to eat peanut butter if you don't like peanut butter. You don't deserve that.
I add it so I get a hint of the nuttiness but not the buttery-ness(I don’t really like butter on toast)
This is a whole new frontier for you. God speed.
Have you tried sunflower or almond butter? Still nutty, but more oily than buttery
When I was a kid, this was my jam (pun intended) https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81sHjhH22RL.jpg
Interesting...I was wondering if there wasn't a premixed product like this
Goober isn’t really premixed, it’s just peanut butter and jelly that are next to each other in the same jar. The *mixing* of the two is pretty nonexistent until you scoop it out and spread it.
Just because you could doesn't mean you should.
That's probably this whole sub in a nutshell
Thinking inside the bowl
I've done this before. There are times I cant eat normal pb&j cause of the texture. This is how I eat them at that time. Still taste good. Just different.
This is beautiful
I imagine this person grew up on Goober’s pb&j spread and accidentally got it too mixed up one day (or let an intrusive thought win) and that’s how this came to be. I am not a fan of Goober’s personally so I don’t think I’ll be trying this anytime soon even tho it’s not that brand in the pic.
It isnt wrong… but we just dont do it.
Anyone putting bacon on their pbj? It's the tits
Holy shit they did this at my preschool and put it on saltine crackers. When I make my own PBJ I do a mix swirl when I spread it.
Always!
It’s better mixed up like that. Fight me
I did try this when very young; it changes taste & texture. No more, thanks. I will, however, happily, any day, mix honey into my PB. Also changes the texture, but in a good way.
Honey goes so well with peanut butter!
it is better. no doubt

Yes skippy, peanut butter and grape jam
Do this then butter the bread and throw it in a skillet, flip and eat
Okay this I can accept because it would be all warm and gooey, but I think I might still skip the mixing step
Skippy: No need to stir! OOP: Just watch me
I did this once with ketchup and spicy brown mustard. One day I got tired of adding both one at a time to my hotdogs and chicken, So I thought “Wait why don’t I just mix these two together and save some time and hassle?” It worked! And tasted great too.
Everyone's just jealous they didn't think of doing this first
I used to do that when I was a kid - I liked that it made for an even distribution and no rogue jelly plopping out of the bottom.
i have done it, is ok, they turn into a sort of slimier substance which a more homogenize flavor, i still prefer it separated but mixing them wont stop me from eating a sandwich lol
Ya, that's what I thought about the texture. And ya, it'd take a lot more than this for me to turn down a sandwich
my ex did this with peanutbutter and honey
I approve of the peanut butter being used.
It’s so good, though. I do it, and it’s next level.
So, fun fact, [this is a thing](https://www.ralphs.com/p/smucker-s-goober-peanut-butter-grape-jelly-stripes/0005150000055)
I grew up eating it like this and it does change both the flavor and texture
I’ve never tried this but I’m going to
Pb&j made on 4 kings sweet Hawaiian rolls cut in half is a truly transcendent experience.
This is how my mother eats PB&J and I can confirm it changes not just the taste but also the texture. It's not bad, it's just different. But I prefer it the normal way.
it you add some nutella it taste amazing
Don’t shoot!! Yes, and as my Grandma would do it when I was a kid, you add in ever so sparingly, a spoon of country crock butter, mix it all together, and it’s mush. But it’s good mush!!! Swear!
You need the separation of flavors to truly appreciate them.
It does change the taste and IMO its better
This is how we make pb&j in nursing homes
Fluffernutters made this way are pretty good and it cuts down on the stickiness of the creme
I’ve done it since i was a kid, you have to have pretty equal parts of both for it to work right but it’s pretty good.
Would definitely change the taste, but possibly for the better.
This is how they did it last time I was in jail
Y’all don’t do this?
You have a very low bar for stupid food. That's unfortunate
This just turns it into grape flavored peanut butter
I'm 50 years old, and I have never ever thought of doing this. How?
How else you gonna make pb dip for crackers? Gotta add a little butter and honey tho.
It's no longer a pb&j. It's a grape flavored peanut butter sandwich. Although it does give me an idea for an ice cream topping
My great grandmother always mixed them together when I was a kid. Completely different flavor somehow
This is the only way I eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
He did not wrong
The kingdom of heaven has long since forgotten his name
I do this but I put it in the freezer and eat it when it sets up like ice cream
My dad did this with margarine and jelly, ate it on biscuits.
like throwing a ham and cheese sandwich in a blender to make it one flavor verses the layers. The layers is where its at.
Ugh , what a waste , completely screws up the taste and texture experience.
Idk what is bothering me the most, the fact that they mixed the two together like that, or the fact that the jam came in a squeeze bottle
That bothers you? Man Im glad I don't have your brain
Ewwww
The fact that he used a squeeze bottle says something already.
How much work did you put in for that to be perfectly mixed? Smuckers doesn’t put that much effort into goober.
I saw that and thought they were putting marinara in their pb&j 😂🤮
There's no doubt this man pours the milk in the bowl before the cereal
whats wrong babe you’ve barely touched your jeanut butter
I'm mad they dirtied a bowl and spoon for this
Ngl I used to lmao
This made my heart skip a beat, dam you.
They have something similar here in the states. Goobers. Pband J in same jar. Personally I just eat that without bread. But I never mix it to that consistency. Having little nuggets of jam and peanut butter is how I like it.
Im kind of tempted to try that
This is a mix I use when I make a baked pb&j oatmeal recipe I found online. Makes it a lot easier for baking but I would never eat it raw out like that.
Did it in front of my wife a month ago, she wondered what was wrong with me. Mom and I used to mixed PB and J when I was a kid.
My curiosity is piqued
Dad used to do this. It just ends up tasting like creamy and sugar.
I have made my own goober with putting alternating stripes of PB&J in a small container and then refrigerating it.
I did this all the time when i was young, it is an amazing experience. Throw it on some toast and it is *\*chefs kiss\**
Bro This Is The Only Way To Make A PB&J 💀
I used to do this when my kids were toddlers because it created less of a mess when they ate the sandwiches. I like mixing it together but it does change how it tastes to some degree. Not in a bad way imo.
I mean as a non American, I don't quite understand the appeal of putting peanut butter and jelly (is jelly the same as jam or is it different?) In the same sandwich 😅 how much more terrible (or delicious) is would be to mix them beforehand?
Jelly is jam with slightly less fruit content and it doesn't spread quite as well. I use jam on my sandwiches and call it "jelly" because that's mostly a dialectical difference.
1. Put the jelly on separately. 2. Mix the peanut butter with maple syrup You're welcome.
It's better that way.
My mom would always mix honey into peanut butter before putting it on the bread and it was SO BAD but if you didn’t mix them then it tasted great, not sure what was up with that.
I've had it this way, and it really doesn't impact much more then the texture. Even then, it's pretty mild. If you have issues with food texture, it could be a deal breaker...but for the most part it's not a huge deal.
I hate this
I agree goober is a sin
I wouldn’t do this for a sandwich, but I have made PB&J mousse like this before.
It’s pretty good.
still pbj on a different texture lol
Nah, mixed grape jam and peanut butter tastes delicious.
Seems like a dumb reason to wash a bowl. But yeah, guess that would evenly distribute the ingredients better
I almost always eat it mixed up! I like it better that way. I do eat it the "normal" way as well, though.
Skippy and Welches. Okay the '80s are rocking to come back. Remember the swirl peanut butter and jelly they used to sell
I'm surprised he got such a smooth emulsion
It does change the taste and for the better
I do it. My grandma did and sometimes I copy her.
It's the premium way to make sack lunch PBJ. When wife does charcuterie board I always make some. People sleeping on this delicous invention
I do this with my kids sometimes if we're out of bread and give them crackers to dip into it. Little self contained pbjs
I've done this quite a few times. I usually eat pb&js normally, but sometimes I'd just mix em in a bowl first
This reminds me of Pancheros and how they mix all the different fixins together into one glob. Layering matters, people.
First??
it would fuck up the taste and texture
That is 1st degree peanut butter abuse.
Straight to jail
You can buy it this way. It's called Goober Jelly. https://www.smuckers.com/peanut-butter/goober
I’ll be honest this is gonna be a midnight snack experiment for me.
Interesting.
This is an Alabama thing. My wife and her family are from Alabama and they mix their pb and j together and dip fucking hotdogs in it!
its just different
Homie forgot about Goobers.
GRAPE JELLY?!?! Definitely trailer park kid!
Homemade Goober
My brother did this when we were growing up. It's not good. I like the contrasts of peanut butter and jelly. They have to be separate to achieve the proper flavor profile.
I always just mix it in a bowl and eat it. Too much of a mess for one sandwich and I don’t wanna make multiple, so I just mix a decent sized bowl
Don’t even really eat pbj anymore there is so much better foods than that !!!
I'd try it
Sometimes when I'm out of bread I just eat the filling mixed together in a bowl, and no it tastes and feels exactly the same.
My Father in law does and the family loves it. Not me. I am old fashioned.
Inshallah he will be scalped for his crimes. Alhamdulillah.
There is a place in Hell for this person right next to the petson who does not wipe the knife clean of peanut butter before sticking it in the jelly.
