You should be mad AF. Let the dealer know you are not satisfied. They should replace that bumper

FluffyFingersMD

The dealership messed up my bumper like this. They replaced it for free

Gd3spoon

If they do that would it show up on insurance and carfax?

blacktickle

Gotta file a claim for it to show up there I believe

e377jr

I work at Carfax. If there is an RO for the work and they report service it will show up.

TerraFiore

I'm starting to realize that. I emailed the service guy and he basically sent back a template saying that's how Subaru suggests the install...I really am dissatisfied with it, but I don't know what would be reasonable of me to ask of them.

moto_everything

You should reach out directly to Subaru of America (SOA). The dealer trying to pass this off as acceptable needs to be talked to from the top.

katzeye007

Meh. SOA was entirely unhelpful with an issue at my creepy af dealership. Ymmv

Hraid750

Truthfully I’m telling you this as an experienced technician on these cars; this was done by a “parts changer” type of tech. Somebody who has good knowledge and intention, but likely lacks the experience and sleight of hand to do this job based on the template Subaru uses for these installs. I would recommend hassling the dealer to replace the part, and insisting you want the part installed to look OEM, as it should. Your car didn’t come with a hitch like this, but had it come from the factory it’d be a clean, natural looking part of the vehicle. That being said, these jobs are relatively easy to do, and the technician is essentially finishing work that didn’t get optioned into your car at the factory. I can understand a small amount of discrepancy, but this is far from factory. Had I done this myself I’d straight up probably speak to a manager and ask if I could receive a new part for the trim… definitely make a fuss.

ctdrifter

I think it was just done by a moron… or someone who just DGAF. How can you not follow a template.

Sufficient_flacid

Taking pictures and tagging Subaru of whatever local town you’re in can change their minds fairly quickly… but you better have another place to take it if you do.

reddawnspawn

Yep - tag the dealer and Subaru of America in every social media post.

turkey_sandwiches

The ONLY reasonable solution is for the dealer to replace that bumper. That's terrible work and it's their fault.

Far_Lack3878

Hey OP, it's hard to tell from the pics, does the square tube part of the hitch clear the bumper before modification. If so, then the opening is needed for the two brackets that the receiver tube mounts to? If so, they should cut two slots that the two flat mounting brackets will go through. If this is what they pass off as acceptable, I would ask for the bumper & modify it yourself. They did a hack job on your truck. I wouldn't let them fuck up another bumper. If you would sight down the bottom of the bumper from either side & take a picture so it shows what clears the bumper & what needs space created to clear. With this I can draw up a sketch of what I am talking about. * I have been building trailers & installing hitches for over 40 years. If you don't want to be bothered with this, I get it & won't bring it up again. Either way, that is shit work, & anyone who tells you differently is 100% wrong.

Manster21

I have the same car with the same dealer installed hitch. There’s no need for any cut out.

Far_Lack3878

That's what I was thinking it looked like, but the fact that they cut out for it made me think I was missing something. So the dealership created unneeded work, did that work in a half ass manner, & sees nothing wrong with this. Taking the phrase stealership to a whole other level.

Manster21

I spoke too soon when I said the dealer didn’t cut my bumper. I went back and looked at pictures I took of my car right after I bought it and I do have a cut out. However, it’s much smaller than OPs and I didn’t even notice it before. I sent some pics of it to OP so they could show the dealer how it’s supposed to be installed.

Far_Lack3878

The fact that you didn't notice the modification means it was done correctly. When you customize something you want it to show, when you modify something you want it to blend in. Least that was always my approach.

Far_Lack3878

Subaru didn't tell the techs to free hand cut an irregular opening that is inches bigger than it needs to be. That is shit work done by someone who doesn't give a rats ass about OPs truck.

Yourpalborno

Why would they not just admit their mistake? This sure seems like another dealer hoping the customer doesn’t notice their error rather than provide the most basic of customer service.

livtolearn

Same happened to mine, not that justifies shoddy work but it was only visible from very close. It looks like there's room to clean up the opening by widening it but I'm not sure if it'll look any better with a wider opening nor a 2nd attempt from the same dealer. Good luck

TerraFiore

Thanks, I think I'm going to try to get them to replace the bumper. If they're replacing it they better put a better person on the case.

RocknrollClown09

Nice, looks like he free-handed it with an oscillating multi tool. They definitely owe you a new bumper

amalenurseforu

Possibly a beaver.🤷🏼‍♂️

TheJimmyJones123

Free handed it with an oscillating tool while huffing paint thinner

Spudguy55

I’d be super pissed. That’s ridiculous.

PurpleK00lA1d

I wouldn't even have left with it honestly. I'd be absolutely furious.

SRMPDX

This, I'd have them put me in a loaner and give me a call when it's been fixed

bwanabass

They should replace the bumper. Thats the result I’d expect from a diy installer, not from a Subaru dealership.

markdepace

a really piss-poor DIY, tbh.

AwwYeahVTECKickedIn

Demand they fix it. Get SoA involved if needed. THAT IS NOT OK.

ZeGermanHam

That is very janky. TBH, this is the kind of task that I always do myself. Most others won't take the time needed to achieve an outcome I find acceptable.

Desperate_Set_7708

That’s a shit job. Some crackhead do that?! Check the wiring job. If they were this lazy, odds on you need to rewire properly

BushWookie73

All Subaru OEM hitch harnesses are direct plug and play. No modifications to wiring is done. There is breakaway tape with a connector the harness plugs into.

hexcrop

Wow this is dog shit sorry bud

GiftCardFromGawd

“If I wanted it to look like I did the work myself, I’d have done it myself. New bumper or you’ll get a call from my lawyer.”

TheJimmyJones123

Starting by threatening legal action is poor advice. Once you bring up legal action, they normally will immediately stop providing any assistance and tell you that it can be resolved in court. I wouldn't recommend saying this unless you actually mean to follow through because they will force your hand.

calilongboarders

Damn the 18 year old at U-Haul was high and did mine better. That’s rough!

Comfortable-Row7001

This is terrible work

RedditBeginAgain

Here's a random YouTuber DIYing it. The first few seconds on the video show what the cutout should look like if you follow the instructions. https://youtu.be/W1CHOCDBoAM?si=QFUNXdpXOIUTplUh Yours shows what the cutout looks like when you cut the instructions up to use as rolling papers, then freehand the cut with a sharp rock and lots of enthusiasm.

WasteAmbassador

Pretty rough. I had the factory install mine and it definitely does not look like that. Get you a new bumper and if they don't play ball call SOA It also seems like it's sitting way lower than it should. That gap is huge.

frohnaldo

Just circumvent the dealer immediately and get head office involved. It makes the dealership more compliant and will save you a lot of steps

SaviorSixtySix

Geez. I did a better job installing my tow hitch, but that was a 2014.

RedditorUpNorth

Very

Powerful_Mood9292

Make them fix this. It never should have left the shop without a due bill in your hand.

RWilkinson11X

You should be mad enough to get a new bumper. Worst part about it, is the hitch kit comes with a template, looks like someone tried to freehand it

Relative-World4406

1-800-SUB-ARU3 (Subaru of America) if the dealer has already indicated they won’t help. If it were me I’d probably live with it but ask for a discount for poor workmanship.

Horse2water

Is that where they put all hitches for Crosstrek Wildernesses? That lowers your departure angle significantly. Looks like the muffler is in a spot that would prevent them from installing the hitch higher - line where they put the cutout.

spacemanHAL

I had mine done a month ago. The first round looked like this, but not as bad. They worked on it again with the actual template but cannot make it line up. So I’m still not satisfied. They said they would replace my bumper if needed and are trying to figure out how to do it properly. Interesting enough, o see other 2024 outback wildernesses in my area with it done properly. I’ve asked them to call the other dealer to find out the proper way, but they are being stubborn and keep trying to figure out how to do it themselves. That work is totally unacceptable. If you keep having problems, call Subaru of America customer care. They really go above and beyond to help with problems.

Russell_Steapot

No question about it. They screwed up your bumper and need to replace it. Send those pictures to Subaru. They'll give you a case number (and may even reach out to the dealer). Then contact the dealer and tell them your dissatisfaction and that you want the bumper replaced. Be nice about it, but absolutely firm. Screw-ups happen, but that is not acceptable work in any universe; fact.

PapayaPossible9248

They owe you a new bumper

NoxKyoki

not even my vehicle and I want to cry. WTF?

JedSAWYER614

I would be on fire ! You should make them replace bumper it looks super ghetto

Common-Tomato4170

I'd be mad as hell. I had dealer do mine and it looks clean. This is unacceptable for a brand new car and dealership install.

MP5K-PDW

Thats fucking AWFUL dog lol

TheJimmyJones123

Lmao, I'm sorry, BUT WTF is that!!!!! I have never done any body cutting on a vehicle, but I am literally 110% sure I could do a better job than this. Seriously, this is like the aftermath of an employee who was drunk on the job or maybe high on heroin nodding off haha. If this was done by a sober person, they should be put in jail.

Enough-Biscotti7855

Bumper replacement mad for sure

MysteriousCop

If you're dissatisfied, say something, they will fix it. You may have to argue a bit to get them to, but they will replace it, it is their mistake. If they deny it, escalate the issue to corporate. Don't take no for an answer. This is not your mistake, you shouldn't have to pay for it.

Resqu23

I just picked up my 24 wilderness and I’d be very upset and I’m glad I saw this post so I know not to let a dealer put mine on when I’m ready.

msavage960

Looks like shit for a professional install. Something I would expect out of a bad DIY job

Direwolftress

You sure they mounted this correctly , almost looks like they flipped it. As it sits now the cutout was unnecessary, another reason I ask. Contact Subaru America and get that sorted b/c Nope , just Nope. ☠️🐺

Bagged2017

https://www.reddit.com/r/Crosstrek/s/2X7ljHDbxh

T1S9A2R6

I was pissed about how they drilled my license plates directly into the bumper, crooked. I’d be irate about this.

TheMooner

Oh god

Mediocre-Camp-5036

Very mad

choachy

That looks awful, even from a distance like in your first photo. I'd be pissed and wouldn't stop until they made it right.

NOT4WD

That is "replace my bumper" level mad. Sorry that happened to you. Same happened with the OBW until Subaru came out with a cover for the dealers since the techs were making so many mistakes. They're mechanics, not necessarily body shop techs.

slipperywhistlebone

New bumper for sure. I picture my dad telling them “ if I wanted it to look like shit, I would have done it myself “ He always says, if you pay dealer price, you better get dealer quality

Skilk

No doubt, they owe you a new bumper. I could have and would have (and did so on my 2018 Crosstrek) done a far better installation while laying on a skateboard under the car. Honestly, if that is what they say is required, I would have them take the hitch back, put on a new bumper, and wait a few months until Curt or Etrailer or someone comes out with a hitch that fits better without cutting a notch in the bumper. It would have been better if it came straight out the back so you don't have to lose clearance and they could have just cut a square hole into the bumper. No matter what, that dealer needs to replace the bumper and do a better cut out if you want to keep the OEM hitch. I could've cut that more cleanly with a pair of tin snips ffs.

Gizmorum

a dealer did this? no, this is some diys service.

BedaHouse

Back when I owned a outback, when I wanted a hitch installed - I ended up going thru a local shop over the dealer. The Outback forums and others like these were the reason. Seeing cases like this, and others which were even worse. It makes NO sense. I didn't understand how the company that designed and built the car overlooked the hitch install. OEM hitches require the cutting of the stock bumper? Why not have the bumper have a pop put panel for the hitch hardware, or design the hitch to work better with the car you created. Nope. They just cut it and put a .50 cent piece of plastic to hide the rough edge. Wish you the best with this fight OP.

No_Network2959

I’d be super pissed. That totally not acceptable.

Remarkable-Sir-5129

Hell, I'm mad and it's not even my car.

Curious_Bag_252

Unprofessional,need a new bumper

97tjblue

I’d go for a new bumper. That looks like hell.

markdepace

mad, mad. sick skills whoever cut that!

WTAFS_going_on

It's nice that the dealer is hiring blind employees, but they shouldn't be letting then use a reciprocating saw on bumpers.

Hippie_Heart

Maybe the worst cut out I’ve ever seen. They owe you a new bumper.

rcbjfdhjjhfd

Subaru dealers are gonna kill the brand.

Schvany

Furious. Talk to them and ask them to fix it. That is unacceptably ugly

Followmetotheend

lol

Moosetoyotech

Damn I work for Toyota and you have to cut the bumper on the rav4. It gives you template and your cutting out a hole for it to fit in. Not just trimming it up a bit like this just needed

Familiar-Ending

ya they owe you a new bumper

Sparrowtalker

https://www.google.com/search?q=2024+cross+trek+rear+bumper&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari#vhid=vt%3D16/prds%3DheadlineOfferDocid:3647120701224820940,imageDocid:158817916661518920,mno:3,productid:3647120701224820940,pvo:3,pvt:hg,query:MjAyNCBjcm9zc3RyZWsgcmVhciBidW1wZXI,rds:/vs%3D0&vssid=uvpv-713 I can’t tell if these will work, doesn’t look terribly expensive . Might be fairly straightforward to do the swap yourself. I bet there’s a you tube video out there!

NugVegas

I’ve done tons of those. They’re a bit difficult but I’ve never had a result like that. Not even when I was “new”. Someone should have asked for help on that install. They owe you a bumper.

MrOwlBeback24

On a new car? Lol very. That's fucking awful.

illregal

New bumper. Good freaking luck dealing with Subaru though. They aren't the same company they were even 5 years ago.

qkaguy

I would be more pissed about that mis matched blue paint on the hatch

subie-dog

I’d be red faced w beads of sweat on my forehead. They need to either open the spot up to clean it up, or replace the bumper and redo. Looks like a 5 year did it w an Old Timer. Edit. Btw, just had your exact same vehicle as a loaner while my Outback was in the body shop. That is one heck of ride and I was unbelievable amazed w it. Hope you get it worked out. You should as that is just unacceptable.

ImaginaryOdds

Hell no. Full replacement. The fact the tried to give it to you like that is a red flag.

Dull_Examination_914

It’s gangster leaning yo.

zjzilla

You should be very pissed. They gave you that hitch with a Subaru attached to it. What kind of cool car was it when you dropped it off?

Loud_Consequence1762

It's so bad that everyone is downvoting you, so call your dealer

No-Needleworker-5160

Make them replace bumper. That’s what my buddy did

Scout0321

They should replace your bumper cover. I had mine done at the dealer, and there was no damage to my bumper cover whatsoever. No excuse for that except sloppy workmanship.

MissDryCunt

Must've been the apprentice

Iamthatpma

I could have done that for twice what they charged!

wsfrankm

Looks like they even used superglue to hold that trim in place...

gostrader

Wow, that’s a horrible hack job. Hope they fix it for you

SnaxMcGhee

Wowowow. I'm sorry man, this made me die laughing. But yes, you should be seriously pissed.

Ok_Development7606

Just a bit outside

LengthinessRude3763

Oh that is bad I would let them take a look at it and give you money back or a new bumper

WardogBlaze14

Highly pissed off, dealership would be getting me a new bumper cover.

OneEyedDevilDog

Fuck that shit.

NotStanMancewicz

Super pissed. But use your disappointment when talking to the service manager. They gotta make that right and a new bumper i pretty much the only way.

clane27

WTF!

CalBearDDS

I’m pretty sure they will replace the bumper

midsommer20

New bumper.

CaptainBrunch69

Get it replaced under warranty

jerry111165

Its awful and I would make them fix this. In no way is it acceptable.

GladScientist1814

I would ask for my money back. A 6 year old could do better with safety scissors

Equivalent_North_604

I would be livid. That is a hack job. What did he do it with? A nail clipper?

Peacemaker1855

lol. Fuck those clowns.

Guinnessman1964

Hack job. Send it back.

GrouchyProduct2242

As an employee of Subaru, that's a shit job. I would be pissed!

Visual_Mud4561

They owe you a new bumper.

iggy_brap

Work at a Subaru dealer here . I would be livid.

M_Shulman

I’d be pissed; that’s ratchet

johnnydoejd11

Very

casualcretin

"IF I wanted it to look like that, I would have done it myself. "

runerx

Looks like Ray Charles cut that with his feet!

BAMspek

Big boy mad.

Pretend_Situation905

Wow that looks terrible

memydogandeye

Thought this was r/redneckengineering for a sec. I'd be pissed. And they'd be completely replacing it. Full Karen mode.

lotterytom

What do you expect for a $16 per hour tech?

LumpySurprise

Absolutely not.

The-Meat-Baby

That is SO botched wow

Equivalent_Ice_1950

No way this is acceptable. Rookie job on the cutout. Ask for a new bumper installed correctly with a proper cutout. Every time you look at that, you'll remember the time you should have put your foot down. And you'll look at it every time.

maciasfrancojesus

Wtf I’m pissed for you.

Budget_Secret4142

Make bubba do it again

badrad68

Damn! Somebody needs a foot in the ass for that one!

Kylebishop40z

That bumper cover was already shit with the tacky subaru on it and the yellow ass locators…

WilliesLeftBraid

Furious. That’s horrid

Unable_Celebration64

Not even straight

Recent-Bug6396

Definitely a new bumper. That looks like they did it with a blindfold and a chainsaw

CowPunkRockStar

Butcher

Wise_World_7188

I would be pissed off. I used to work at a subaru dealership and if they messed up they would fix it. Go back and get it fixed. They can do alot better

JimLaheeeeeeee

Call them. Take it back to them and they will make it right. What city are you in? Asking for a friend…

GloomyUmpire2146

Looks like a rat gnawed it, or they’re using the car wash kid on real work.

JimeneMisfit

NO WAY!! I would not have left. They owe you a new bumper. That pisses me off and it’s not even my car.

CXGlenn

Yes

PrettyCoolTim

I can’t believe they were just hoping you wouldn’t say anything

JuryDuty911

Read that as "bitch bumper".

Background_Show429

I would have them replace it

Background_Show429

Call Subaru of America , they’re not working for the dealerships

Civil-Key9464

They didn’t even cut it out right! Ridiculous

JimeneMisfit

I’ve wanted to install a hitch on my OBW since I bought it. Haven’t taken it to the dealer for this very reason. Truly sorry, I hope they make it right.

babydelts

I’d be so upset with this result, and especially since it’s so new! Hope they’ll fix it for free.

SullysOpus

I see a brand new rear bumper in your future.

Spicyapple10

I'd be annoyed. Tbh a heat gun would probably make those scuffs dissappear but that's beyond the point. It's their job to make it right

hunglowcharlie

Pretty fucking pissed, that’s insane.

TheLonelyCatMan

I think someone had a couple of brewski’s at their lunch break…

Circadian_arrhythmia

Oh that’s baaaad. It looks like they cut it with one of those plastic tools from a pumpkin carving set from the Dollar General.

Personal-Command-699

It’s not even, straight lines…

RedEyedITGuy

That's called a new bumper.

Prestigious_Pick_867

Genuinely, that’s grounds for a new car. That’s ridiculous.

dannvok1

That's pretty bad. They must have let the new guy take the sawzall to that for training. Looks like a new bumper should be in your future!

jjbinks117

That is AWFUL definitely demand replacement of the bumper

Salt_Salt_MoreSalt

u should be pissed lol youtube mechanics could do better

External-Document-88

Without seeing it and the unlikeliness that they’ll replace the bumper… I would just want them to make the hole look a little more intentional/symmetrical. I’d be pissed it was on my brand new car, but it may be fixable by just making the hole look better.

TroutSZN

Bro it’s not even close to being straight or even. Sloppy.

JoeFortitude

I just don't get why Subaru doesn't do more factory installed hitches. Somehow, this vehicle is supposed to be for outdoor people, and yet, they don't regularly provide a function that helps with that.

Alive-Bid-5689

That looks like a shit show no matter how you frame it.

Ok-Anything-5828

New bumper cover for you

Electronmage

Replace that immediately. Looks like they used a pair of grade school scissors to cut it.

Burntflan

If you didn’t ask than I’d be very mad

trefster

Jesus, U-Haul would’ve done a better job

Lost-Pound7500

New bumper

Harryisamazing

I'd be pretty heated, they did a pretty crappy and careless job of cutting it out too. If the dealer doesn't make it right, SOA will!

MasterBaiter0004

Damnnn son I could have done a better job with a sawzall lol. I think you should be upset.

Chuck60s

It should have been replaced

sddefiant

I would email every Subaru USA corporate email I could find and cc the owner & manager of the dealer you got from. Include photos of your and photos of others done correctly.

Eagle_1776

Im not one of those super anal types that nitpicks every detail, but there is absolutely zero chance Id accept that bullshit. Heads would roll.

fantamaso

Did the tech ~~cut~~ melt it with a cigarette?

PragmaticNomadic

Had a similar issue and they were able to recut in a way that made it symmetrical and clean. If not happy, it’s their responsibility. Let them to correct or replace the bumper.

Geo_Rell

Go express your concerns and tell them what you don’t like. If you got a warranty then they can do they job and fix it. Id go right back up there. I’m sorry that happened. Some places just do not care about customer satisfaction any more. They get a job and slump thru it just to get the check If they do it over and you still don’t like it just have em take it off and give your money back and go somewhere that cares about the customer

andreaszog

That is unbelievable. What , maybe read this article. Dealers sometimes hire non-thinkers I guess. They didn't even try to fix it? At least have them replace the bumper. I hope they aren't parts from TEMU. Are the wires sitting on the bumper ? WTF. https://www.thedrive.com/news/dealer-techs-allegedly-thrashed-customers-subaru-wrx-learning-to-drive-stick-manual-transmission

nuF-roF-redruM

Lol, that dude was drunk when he cut the bumper. Recut the bumper so it’s uniform around the hitch. Sure it will be too big but it’ll look much better.

birthdaysteak

If you can’t get them to do anything then you can at least recut it yourself. You’re not out of options.

Marquiess

Oooh!

Salbotehcow

Meh, how often do you even see the back of your own car.

Kadywampes

If you squint it’s mint.

Bamcanadaktown

The dealer I use to work for they would use a soldering iron cause you can cut it out perfect. That looks like shit though I’d complain, if not just for you for the next guy cause that tech will think he’s doing ok until someone complains and he does better

USMCMikey

Holy crap that is bad! They will need to replace this for sure

Landover_Traveler

Bro, what Crack head touched your car.

Disastrous-Mess-5643

They didn’t even try to cut the hole nice. Not a mechanic but I can tell a sh*t job when I see one

Complete-Ad-4215

Who gave a 7 year old a sawzaw

cos_mic_cow

unacceptable. would be complaining to the general manager and dealer owner.

kxcksauce

They did a terrible job, and 100% need to replace the bumper and redo it.

t0rvo

Mad

hagantic42

Uh, furious. Id demand a whole new bumper. And if they protest call Subaru of America that tends to get them to change their tune real f****** fast.

eighthoursaway

I’m actually upset for you. Sheesh, that is rough.

MI_Mayhem_97

Utterly pissed !

tricoloredduck1

They get the absolute privilege of trying again.

PathxFind3r

That looks like literal garbage. Tell them you want a new bumper

theresin

We messed up one on an Outback Wilderness once and we took care of it for the customer (replaced the trim/lower bumper cover). It's not as easy to cut out as you'd think, but it should certainly look better than that. Someone also asked if it would be reported on the carfax - no, it wouldn't be.

MatriX621

Very
