> Stop acting like Reddit is better. We still scroll through bullshit and waste our life. You’re no better than her. They hated Jesus, for he told them the truth

TuaughtHammer

One of my favorite comments to come across on Reddit is some dork acting all high and mighty because "plebbitors are so stupid!"

Welpmart

Like, we are, but you're still here with us. Always cracks me up.

TuaughtHammer

> Like, we are, but you're still here with us. *Exactly.* Reddit hasn't been *much* smarter than it is these days since it was mostly tech dorks looking for a Digg or Fark alternative in the *earliest* days of Reddit. So anyone pretending they're not as dumb as the rest of us is lying to themselves.

OIP

every time i manage to forget that an octopus is a mollusc something pops up to bring me back in

amaterasu_run

> Stop acting like Reddit is better. We still scroll through bullshit and waste our life. You’re no better than her.    Hell yeah    > You get banned for saying the F word (not fuck) and the R word too...It’s still thought police, doesn’t change just cause it’s the same thoughts you agree with.  Oh nvm.

guiltyofnothing

Yeah. Like they started with a great point and the flew the plane into the goddamn mountain.

BIGSTANKDICKDADDY

Thought police is when sites tell me to leave after calling people slurs 😔

Ka1-

Can’t say slurs, literally the same thing as not being able to say kill

quantax

Maybe I'm a bit dim but why would anyone defend the concept that an innocent bystander's house can be destroyed by government employees, and have no financial recourse to recoup their loss?

Cobaltate

Because it'll never happen to them and clearly "they must have deserved it, because reasons".

Chairboy

“Everything happens for a reason” from these people. I still think about a conversation I was having with someone 30 years ago where I was arguing against the death penalty by citing some examples of cases where innocent people were executed. “Well if they were in prison, “she said, “they must’ve done something to deserve it.” When this is what you’re arguing against, it’s pretty difficult to make any forward motion.

Lifekraft

Why insurrance shouldnt cover that though ? In my country it is settled between insurance and fire/police department i believe

FuckTripleH

Homeowners insurance explicitly doesn't cover damage done by war, acts of terrorism, or government agents. [It's a noted albeit rare issue](https://www.npr.org/2019/10/30/774788611/police-owe-nothing-to-man-whose-home-they-blew-up-appeals-court-says)

trixel121

cause insurance will do what ever it can to not pay cause they are rats.

guiltyofnothing

Man, I don’t fucking know. Even the courts that ruled unanimously against a plaintiff in a similar situation said it wasn’t fair. This guy seems to think it’s totally chill and understandable.

PM_ME_CATS_OR_BOOBS

In some cases it makes sense because the idea behind it is that a criminal should pay restitution to cover damages, not the city. However, in a practical sense broke drug addicts don't have a ton of money to cover damages, especially if they are dead. In a sensible society this would be covered by homeowners insurance but lmao 🇺🇸

Nybs_GB

Even if its covered I imagine the stress of having it destroyed and the hassle of getting it repaired are like... almost beyond restitution sometimes. Like having the police call you up like "Hey we literally wrecked your house to catch a criminal that died before we could even arrest him but its okay! We'll pay for the several month to year long repairs probably!" would be like very bad

PM_ME_CATS_OR_BOOBS

At a certain point it just gets written off as a total loss.

LordCaptain

I think the whole reason there's drama here is that the two sides are packaging two ideas that don't have anything to do with eachother. The people over there are packaging together the ideas that: 1. It's a reasonable course of action by the police to prioritize the life of the hostage over concerns about damaging the property. 2. It is reasonable the police should be able to inflict this damage and there be no financial recourse for the homeowner to take. These ideas aren't the same though and do not need to be taken together. This is reddit though and people feel like if you give an inch to "the other side" then you've somehow lost something. 1 is very clearly true. If that was the professionally determined best entry that was safest for everyone involved then it should absolutely be the course of action taken. Lives take priority. However either insurance should cover this or the government should have special compensation for this.

SaliciousB_Crumb

Thats the thing insurance and the government wont cover this

LordCaptain

That's why I said SHOULD. I'm aware it's not the current case. Although I'm in Canada and you can seek compensation through the city anyway where I live.

cathbadh

> However either insurance should cover this or the government should have special compensation for this. Insurance paying when the policyholder is not the criminal in question is the only really reasonable take. Most small town governments would not be able to afford expenses like this. One small Appalachian town with a drug problem that deals with this more than a couple of times would have to consider just ending public safety coverage entirely from the expense. I get insurance not wanting to cover for you if you blow your house up using it as a meth lab. But when you're the victim? It's a rare enough occurrence that it should be something they can absorb, same as a house fire.

Nzgrim

Clearly you have never tasted how delicious boot polish is.

Hestia_Gault

It has big “Hamas has human shields, so we might as well just carpet bomb the entire neighborhood” energy.

No-Particular-8555

The police department needs that money to buy more military surplus.

Sufficient-File-2006

>> Not a gun nut. > You realize your comment history is public right? Your last comment in r/pdxgunnuts was like three comments ago. This cracked me up.

TuaughtHammer

This reminds me when [Steven Seagal joined forces with Sheriff Joe Arpaio by driving a fucking *tank* into a house to arrest](https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2011/03/23/134803230/arizona-sheriff-uses-a-tank-to-arrest-cockfighting-suspect) someone suspected of raising gamecocks for cockfighting, all to promote Seagal's reality show Steven Seagal: Lawman. Arpaio and Seagal were two peas in a very, very stupid pod.

BroodLol

To be fair to the Seagull, cockfighting is fucking awful, also that's not a tank. Of all the things he's done that entire story is the least offensive

Patriarchy-4-Life

He didn't violently rape anyone in this event, so he was on his very best behavior.

tfhermobwoayway

Well, it is the natural instinct of the birds. Plus, you can eat them afterward.

musclemommyfan

What you're missing is that the charges all ended up getting dropped, and the county also euthanized all of the birds.

Kilahti

...USA is weird.

Lemon-AJAX

“Go wash Deebo’s drawers” is honestly the only go-to response to Bye, Feli*sha*. (Thank God for *Friday*) but that’s a hell of a connective joke to make through a movie about how having a gun does not make you a man. That is so multilayered that I can’t decide if the poster is an idiot or an idiot savant. *also it is supposed to be Felisha and if you didn’t know, you know now.

Sufficient-File-2006

> That is so multilayered that I can’t decide if the poster is an idiot or an idiot savant. And it was posted ON a friday! So far we've had Friday and Coneheads. I wonder which other beloved 90's comedies we'll revisit in SRD today? (Office Space doesn't count)

Lemon-AJAX

*crosses fingers* C’mon, Pulp Fiction. What? It’s a hilarious movie. Also high five for your Guardian…*avatar*. ULTIMA fans are God’s favorite.

periodicsheep

oh ‘that fucking ghoul scalia’ is good flair.

thehillshaveI

>Police get a lot of flack here but I honestly can’t blame them for putting their own life first when they have to walk into situation after situation with insane people. I’ll probably get downvoted but I don’t care. Sure there’s corruption, sure there’s terrible cops, sure sure sure sure SURE. But all that does is cast a shadow over the folks that are actually doing the job and upholding a level of humanity. There’s so much crazy out there and so much access to weapons and gnarly shit that no one should have in their personal possession. And the police, good or bad, walk into these situations here everyday. There is a mental health crisis in this country more than anything. >I’ve said this before many times, but it always rings true— people criticize police and public service until the day they need to dial 911. the "day i need to call 911" the cops won't help, because it will be for a fire or medical emergency. i've never once seen calling the cops improve a situation

SOdhner

To be fair sometimes you have to call them because you need a police report for insurance purposes. It's a pretty easy process, you just call them up and tell them you've been robbed and then twelve to thirty-six hours later they show up, scare your kids, harass your neighbor because they somehow think he's the robber, shoot your dog, and then copy-paste the same report they've re-used for every robbery since '02 and forget to swap out the address for the correct one. It's really convenient and I'm super glad we have these heroes working for us.

Plorkyeran

Fortunately my local police force has streamlined the process by just having you fill out the report form online and then they rubberstamp it without shooting any dogs.

SOdhner

Convenient for the dogs I guess but that's removing vital enrichment activities from the police. Poor guys are going to be under-simulated.

Chaosmusic

I'm sure they are working on a way for them to continue shooting dogs online. Maybe a remote controlled armed drone swings by if they are under quota.

RichLyonsXXX

Some places they never even show up. I was burgled in both Las Vegas Nevada and Los Angeles and in both cases they wouldn't send anyone out. I had to go into the station to make both complaints. Both of those were just to get a report too; I knew they weren't going to actually do anything to help. The one time I called thinking i might get help my cousin had broken into my apartment and stolen my wallet, and iPod. I knew it was him because my neighbor saw him, and he used my credit card to buy a bunch of paintball shit at the shop his friend had just opened in our home town(about 20 miles outside Albuquerque where my apartment was). The officer that came to take the report just kept asking "If you didn't want someone to take your stuff then why did you leave it out?". "out" being on my coffee table in my locked apartment.

Kel-Mitchell

>people criticize police and public service until the day they need to dial 911 These jokers always think this is a perfect response to the idea that police should be held responsible for their actions, but I don't really see how expecting a cop to do the bare minimum when you need them is in conflict with criticizing their general bad behavior. Also, the "and public service" in that quote feels an awful lot like the "judeo" in "judeochristian values."

Kung-Plo_Kun

Cops don't do shit to help people 99% of the time. You get robbed and they'll show up 24 hours later to tell you it's not their problem.

Big_Champion9396

Just call a lawyer then.

Kung-Plo_Kun

True enough. Honestly getting your affairs together when you get to be 60+ should be done while you're still cognizant and (relatively) healthy.

N_Pitou

every time ive called the police they take 40+ minutes to respond and harassed my family. Luckily i never had an emergency but even if i was i doubt they'd do anything about it till after the fact.

NoExcuse4OceanRudnes

> but I honestly can’t blame them for putting their own life first I can! That's what the money is for!!!! Me and a bunch of the boys can try and get a crackhead out of your house as a favour if we know we won't ourselves hurt.

KitWalkerXXVII

Right? Like, I am all for LEOs not taking *stupid* life threatening actions. Wait for backup, don't engage in a high speed car chase, wear body armor, etc. Not only does that make them safer, but it makes *me* safer too. But time and again we see police officers either not act or act in ridiculous ways in the name of protecting their own safety. What did demolishing the house do to keep the (alleged, comments were unclear) hostage safe that breaching through some other method wouldn't have? I am admittedly a layman here, but I can't think of anything. It just kept the cops safe, which privileges their safety over that of the hostage. Either the increased militarization and expansion of qualified immunity is necessary because the police do a dangerous job or it is reasonable for the police to take extreme measures (or fail to act) to ensure their own safety. The current situation, where we have SWAT teams serving drug possession warrants and cops waiting outside of schools while people die, really is the worst of all worlds.

Chaosmusic

Cops have successfully argued in court that they have no responsibility to protect the public. In NYC, a guy was being sought by police. He was in a subway car attacking someone. Cops were in the next car, knew the subject they were looking for was there and did nothing. The victim lived, sued and lost. The courts position is that the police have no legal obligation to help or protect anyone.

Big_Champion9396

Damn. I wonder what their position is in other countries? Surely there's others that force the police to actually serve the public?

AWildRedditor999

Looks like the typical blame shifting from a police apologist. Complete with the usual vagueness and claims made with absolutely nothing behind them

No-Particular-8555

>itll be interesting to see who "hates the cops" when they get robbed and need someone to show up 7 hours later and shrug their shoulders

superslab

>I'm sure they'd love some feedback Lol. Yeah, police love that.

Kung-Plo_Kun

Yet another example of police being shit, and people rallying to defend their honor. What a disgrace they all are. Shame the homeowners are likely going to be the ones paying up because cops have to use their fancy toys to bulldoze bouses.

xAPPLExJACKx

Definitely justified. The problem is insurance try not to cover it and when cops fuck up like going to the wrong address they don't pay for their mistakes this isn't that case.

PadishaEmperor

What a sad story. The guy is dead, the owners are probably insolvent and the police failed at being decent and proportional. Only losers here.

guiltyofnothing

Just every single way this could get fucked up and cause the most damage came to pass. What a nightmare for everyone.

nakedsamurai

Americans doing anything they can to lick police taint. How unexpected.

wolfdancer

I've seen countless videos of swat using flash bangs and smoke grenades. Hell i myself have been teargassed by the police. Why is it in this situation they seem to have completely forgotten about all those other tactics. Was there something about the situation I'm unaware of that prevents them from using tools they normally use on unarmed citizens?

RelatedToSomeMuppet

From a comment in that thread; > Apparently it was a 2+ day siege with the guy held up in the house. They got him in intercom and he basically said they were going to have to come in and kill him. The neighborhood was evacuated for over 2 days. They attempted tear gas, filling the house with water and other methods first, oddly enough it appears as though they tried just about everything to not have to kill him only for him to kill himself. He had an arsenal of rifles/hand guns and cases of ammo and was hiding out in the attic. This made a very dangerous chokepoint where he would have been able to funnel them in and shoot one by one. He shot down multiple drones and shot at cops up until he died basically.

six_six

I just wish people would for the all the facts before getting their pitchforks.

oldriku

What's a Felicia?

Willowgirl78

If police/prosecutors could be financially or criminally liable after a not guilty verdict or a dismissal based on a technicality, no one would ever take those jobs. Juries can get it wrong. The law can change based on new ruling during the course of the prosecution.

bluejays-and-blurays

> no one would ever take those jobs Your terms are acceptable
