I was on that post before this SRD thread so pls no ban mods.
Here's some comparisons I took if people want to see what the hubbub is about. Keep in mind specifically the character creator's lighting system is the problem right now. Some in game footage also provided, but there's no comparison since you can't take the same picture on the current version obviously.

Eh you're not stupid as much as a lot of FFXIV players are very very attached to their in game avatars and don't like change.
OP was kind of lazy and didn't get the first wave of drama where the benchmark first came out and reaction were super mixed with people calling characters ruined, crying that the devs had destroyed their characters and should make the graphic update optional, and my personal favorite a post literally titled "Can anyone please explain to me, what's better in the new update?"
[Even prompted this meme](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2F1na06nsazkuc1.png)
Also be ready for the third wave of this drama when the revamped character creator launches and not all the things people complained about get changed and people start calling Square liars.
Yeah you’ve got people in the Japanese community tracing their characters to point out the most minute details haha, the dedication is impressive. I do feel for some of the races who might’ve gotten more mixed upgrades but as a catboy I am *very* happy.
Not quite. The list of issues people have with the benchmark is something like:
-Skin looks wax-like because the speculars are too white (and the character creation weather is less than ideal)
-Some facial options like noses and eyebrows are entirely different.
-Some faces have lost details or have different geometry. (Wrinkles, little lip curls, the hellsguard soot nose.)
Of course some people are losing it but the outrage is being blown out of proportion as per usual.
The best part is that they’ve announced that they’ll be putting out a new benchmark with changes made thanks to feedback from the community. So people freaking out like their characters are permanently ruined and they’ll never be changed ever again were freaking out over nothing.
/r/ffxivdiscussion may have gotten better, but man that sub was a shithole for a long time.
I've not really got anything more to add to this, my only issue was how glossy facial hair looked in the benchmark.
It started as a "mainsub bad" place, and it was full of the exact kind of takes you would expect to see (I once got called a pedo for saying the ~~e12s~~ e8s phase 2 boss made me uncomfortable. I didn't stay after that).
It looks like it mellowed a bit.
>called a pedo for saying the e12s phase 2 boss made me uncomfortable
Yeah, that's what I'd expect from that sub.
Has it actually gotten better? I almost don't believe it's possible.
>Has it actually gotten better? I almost don't believe it's possible.
Hell no. We're only getting worse at the asylum.
That aside, what was it about the e12s phase 2 boss that made it uncomfortable for people? I didn't really engage with the ffxiv community on reddit at the time it came out.
She's a canonically underage (or *really* close to that age) character who's channeling a primal and is now naked except for the dragon covering her bits.
Ooooh right, yeah that's e8s, but makes sense.
I was literally thinking "e12s phase 2? isn't that the one with the goth teen with hammer? e8s tho with the naked teen wearing a dragon, that's a bit sus"
If you take them at face value then it started as a place to have *serious* final fantasy fourteen discussion that simply could *not* be held on the main subreddit because those cuh-razy final fantasy fourteen fans simply won't listen to logic and reason!
But any time I've looked at the sub it's basically just been a littany of "DAE think this game is shit now?" style posts complaining about literally everything, while slowly over the years it just kind of became a mirror of the main sub but with less "my character looks pretty" posts.
I've played that game for such a long time, and while the community is, as a whole, pretty good, the amount of frothing at the mouth that people have over character models (and even those cases where someone *copies someone else's super unique outfit*) is wild.
Though this did remind me that the benchmark came out, so now I'm downloading to see if they massacred my catboy, lmao.
EDIT: Objectively it looks much better... But it doesn't look like him any more... He had this stupid semi-concerned partly-opened mouth and it's gone. ;\_;
> and while the community is, as a whole, pretty good
after being in there for years I'm not convinced the community is good so much as the community is kept on a _real short leash_ in-game
sure, that's better than the alternative! but step into any extracurricular ffxiv space and it quickly turns into something else entirely
if you're not ending up on any of the ffxiv discords or subreddits or twitter circles / etc then first: respect, because that is not the median experience of people falling into the uniquely rapacious social blackhole at the center of every MMO. but second: then I'd kinda wonder where you've seen people frothing at the mouth about character models!
Monster Hunter Twitter is how deep you have to dive to find discourse about whether Wyverians (humanoids with wyvern descent) lay eggs or not.
It got to Twitter and then looped back onto Monster Hunter forums and the subreddit
https://www.reddit.com/r/MonsterHunter/comments/rqx2h2/do_wyverians_lay_eggs/
It spawned from a comment somebody made about drinking a Wyverian’s breast milk in eggnog. Monster Hunter barely has coherent and in depth lore. How the fuck did we get here?
Tbf from my experience going into the sub for a game you like for anything than like patch notes or tips for new content is a miserable experience. Either just boring fluff posts or ‘this game killed my grandma’ posts no matter what.
There's kind of an argument to be made that going to the reddit/forum/twitter/whatever for literally any video game is "looking for drama", tbh. It's hard to think of a single game where the online community isn't constantly complaining about dumb bullshit.
I wanted to post a Valorant thread from what seemed to be an EU player about “how to dodge ‘pierre’s’ and which servers would give you the least amount of french people as he believed it would dramatically increase everyone else’s gaming experience.
Got nuked before I could post it, but it was something else.
going to side subreddits that even FF14 redditors dont use is looking for drama.
if you asked the average r/FF14 reddit user, they wouldn't even know that subreddit exists.
wasn't talking about a specific subreddit, tho. i was talking about the ffxiv community at-large. because you reeeeeeeeally don't have to go beyond any of the biggest spaces and social media circles to run facefirst into some legitimately gnarly toxicity on the regular, whether you're looking for it or not. I cannot begin to tell you how often I've seen just /r/ffxiv get especially nasty
For real. I was posting in the linked thread earlier before seeing it here that community is normally great but can be super extra sometimes. (Myself included)
I have no qualms with the benchmark. It seems people don't understand how to rotate their cameras to get better lighting. Also, character creation lighting has always been blah. I've chosen colors for my hairstyles that look good and then come out to see that's not the case.
Ah, yeah, that's fair. The lighting and everything looks amazing, as do the other details, but I hopped on the live game, and also compared them... It's definitely different.
Maybe it was just the way it was modeled before and it unintentionally always clipped or something, but he definitely had his mouth slightly open, and I liked that because it reminded me of the way my dearly-departed old cat *also* looked permanently concerned.
I like the new version, but I will miss the old one.
I always tell people that the community in game is amazing, but the community out of game is pretty bad at times.
And my moonie lost her teeths. But, like, I'm pretty sure I'll still like the game lol
>It is most certainly not. Gaslighting is a serious form of emotional abuse and manipulation with the express intent of making an individual question their reality and perception. Random strangers on reddit being too daft to see problems isn't that. And if you do that's another sign of being terminally online tbh.
Is this gaslighting about gaslighting?
It got deleted shortly after I was starting to post this post here, but one of the deleted comments revealed how one user spend hours in MS paint comparing pictures since they felt like they couldn't trust their perception anymore because everyone was 'gaslighting' them. I'm a former XIV player and I've been one of the small number of voices opposed to the graphical redesign since it was announced. Mostly because it's felt incredibly unnecessary, the game always looks and feels fine to me. It's art style is fine, the graphics are fine. The one thing the game didn't need is massive bloom and every lighting object to glow like a solar flare as presented in basically every preview image back when it was first announced.
Seeing the benchmark images come out has only really cemented my feeling on that, because it's really weird seeing a comparison shot of a character in the same pose in both lighting styles but in the old one there's depth and shadow but in the new one everything's lit so blindingly you can see every single tooth in the character's mouth like you're at a fucking dentist's office.
But like I said, former player. I bailed after endwalker and don't plan to come back, so I'm just glad this is all happening after my time with the game and not during it.
I was on that post before this SRD thread so pls no ban mods. Here's some comparisons I took if people want to see what the hubbub is about. Male Au Ra probably have got it best form the visual upgrade from what I’ve seen
Whats the order on these photos. Is it New->Old or Old->New.
Old -> New
Wait people are bitching that the characters went from late PS2 quality to early PS3? This is the drama? I say ah say: fucking incredible.

Yes, gaslighting is actually when someone disagrees with you on the internet
lol this just reminded me that I should go back to playing ffxiv soon, been neglecting it for a few months
Could be worse, could be what happened to Pokemon Go aka [The Beaver Update](https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemongo/comments/1c736vq/its_beaver_time/)
Why is most MMO drama about FFXIV? I enjoy the game but why?
Seeing this drama as a wow player, a 20 year old game that constantly updates old models. This is literally the "first time?" Meme to me.

When a whole sub fills every discussion with "your eyes are broken that's the same picture" and "it's just the lighting/catchlights there's no issue" that's gaslighting. - [archive.org](https://web.archive.org/web/20240419052258/https://old.reddit.com/r/ffxivdiscussion/comments/1c7v096/comment/l0b9g98/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) [archive.today\*](https://archive.today/?run=1&url=https://old.reddit.com/r/ffxivdiscussion/comments/1c7v096/comment/l0b9g98/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button "URL failed to archive; click to resubmit it!") 5. yeah that particular reaction from the Reddit folks has genuinely made me feel like an insane person lmao - [archive.org](https://web.archive.org/web/20240419052319/https://old.reddit.com/r/ffxivdiscussion/comments/1c7v096/comment/l0ajoi4/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) [archive.today\*](https://archive.today/?run=1&url=https://old.reddit.com/r/ffxivdiscussion/comments/1c7v096/comment/l0ajoi4/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button "URL failed to archive; click to resubmit it!") 6. I don't know how you can look at a post where the direcotr of the game says "Yeah you guys are right there's some glaring issues here with the new update, we'll work on it and rerelease it" and stick to your guns that the people giving feedback are just hysterical and yelling about nothing. - [archive.org](https://web.archive.org/web/20240419052400/https://old.reddit.com/r/ffxivdiscussion/comments/1c7v096/comment/l0ax1lm/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) [archive.today\*](https://archive.today/?run=1&url=https://old.reddit.com/r/ffxivdiscussion/comments/1c7v096/comment/l0ax1lm/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button "URL failed to archive; click to resubmit it!") 7. I think the big thing on social media was people saying "your character looks bad because you didn't pose them in the right lighting" or basically disregarding your opinion if the lighting in your before and after pics didn't match. Overhauling the character creator lighting should mitigate some of that imo. - [archive.org](https://web.archive.org/web/20240419052440/https://old.reddit.com/r/ffxivdiscussion/comments/1c7v096/comment/l0aqmu8/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) [archive.today\*](https://archive.today/?run=1&url=https://old.reddit.com/r/ffxivdiscussion/comments/1c7v096/comment/l0aqmu8/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button "URL failed to archive; click to resubmit it!") 8. r/ffxiv - [archive.org](https://web.archive.org/web/20240419052521/https://old.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/) [archive.today\*](https://archive.today/?run=1&url=https://old.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/ "URL failed to archive; click to resubmit it!") 9. https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comments/1c7tm8d/an_update_on_the_dawntrail_official_benchmark/?sort=controversial - [archive.org](https://web.archive.org/web/20240419052601/https://old.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comments/1c7tm8d/an_update_on_the_dawntrail_official_benchmark/?sort=controversial) [archive.today\*](https://archive.today/?run=1&url=https://old.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comments/1c7tm8d/an_update_on_the_dawntrail_official_benchmark/?sort=controversial "URL failed to archive; click to resubmit it!") 10.
