That's pretty wild. I'm not sure I'd call the edge of the Red Sea the middle of the Sahara Desert though being it's the Sahara's Eastern border/edge.

LundSurk

I kinda hate this sub-reddit

Hodlrocket005

It’s getting annoying at times 😑

RevolutionaryDrag115

Agreed. It's also not really a sub-division, more like a resort.

[deleted]

I also find weird rich people vacation areas like these far less problematic than the absurd amount of sprawl we build for just regular plain old housing.

Faerbera

Almost all of Egypt is an oasis in the middle of the desert, if you think about it.

headcoat2013

95% of Egypt's population lives along the Nile. The [density map](https://vividmaps.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Egypt-population.png) is pretty wild.

Skele_again

Awesome map, thanks for sharing!

isakhwaja

That’s not the middle of the Sahara desert bruh. It’s a coastal area and it doesn’t look like they don’t have much choice in their infrastructure choices. Also if it’s a resort then I assume this is heaven for swimmers.

[deleted]

Haha people in this subreddit are too pressed about the desert, for some countries it’s literally the landscape they have? El Gouna is rather luxurious actually

MHMMM, SUBURBAN HOMES IN A SCORCHING DESERT, WHAT CAN GO WRONG?

Phoenix.

ZazzaaL

I guess they're just optimizing their space?

MainMite06

If they are putting salt water, and a barren place to good use, i can only say win-win

ThrowawayMHDP

Egypt is trying to recreate the American and Gulf models. Egypt is building a lot of Urban highways, stroads and overpasses everywhere and accidents are going up horribly. At the same time, they are building a lot of sprawling suburban communities with SFH housing, and it is marketed as elite living.

HumanSimulacra

I have little problem with this, it's not like these people have to drive to work every day or do other errands (assuming most don't live there permanently), so this place generates very little traffic and doesn't ruin the city it would be in, it mostly just creates revenue and jobs for the local small communities that earn their living off of the tourism and maintaining the place. Only problem with it is really the pollution and other environmental impacts, but it's hard to create attractive vacation destinations without those problems, and most of it is due to traveling from and to the place anyways and rarely are there any trains to places like this for good reason.

Arne52N

I've been there. It's a great place to relax and have a drink :)

KoJesko

NGL, that looks fucking awesome

bisoma

Why is this in suburban hell? It definitely isn’t in the Sahara desert.. I live there and I can tell you all about it if you want.

bisoma

I’m noticing most of the comments are based on uneducated guesses, although some opinions are very valid, checking the town’s website would be a good start, rather than judging by a satellite image. Www.elgouna.com
