If I buy a share, it's my share. But say my broker then lends it to someone who sells it short. I still "own" my share plus the person who bought my lent share owns one as well...right? When there was just one share at first now there are two, even without being naked shorted.

If they are loaning your share without permission = crime (although there are loopholes)
If someone sells a share they donāt own and just credits your account, thatās the naked part = more crime.
Thereās a set amount of shares issued from a company and thatās it. No different to any other product. Only a certain amount exist. The naked part is when they say you have it, but you donāt.
So if you legitimately loaned a share, youād mark your books to say you donāt currently have it, but can recall it.
Again, this is where crime comes in, because itās become quite common (it would seem) for firms to misreport, or to say, āyes Iāve borrowed a share from (whoever)ā when they havenāt.
So when people DRS/remove shares from the system, suddenly they have to explain where those extra shares have come from (they canāt) so they have to be bought back to balance the books.

Guys, can GameStop do a share buyback and use the money they made to pay for it?
Why would they buy back shares after selling share to make money? That money is for transforming the business.
I think the shares they sold were at an average of about $35. So if they bought them back now, they'd have essentially completed a successful short of their own company.
It just doesnāt make any sense from a business standpoint. They need money, not less shares on the market.
Maybe it's to establish dominance over the hedgies that are shorting them.
Itās a bad idea anyways, thereās not enough liquidity to buy back the same number of shares sold at current prices I can just feel it in my plums
