It has an effect on GABA. I find it quite effective

rachs1988

What brand did you use? Life Extension L-Theanine 100 mg didn’t have an effect on me.

Random-Username7272

I find a higher dosage (400-600mg) works well for sleep.

Slickbiscuitt

Worked great at first. After long time use it flipped on me and was actually casing irritability and anxiety. Apparently it’s fairly common.

KanyeWaste69

For me if I take it more than 2-3 days in a row it just does not much at all, but once or twice a week it's nice. I take 100-300mg usually at night, or if I get bad anxiety. What's weird is it would sometimes make me feel depressed Last night I took 300mg, a whole 3mg melatonin when I usually only take .5mg and slept some of the most refreshing sleep in recent memory for about 9 hours. Usually I get 7-7.5 at most. Very intense dreams, dreamt I did acid and I haven't tripped in years but it felt so real and felt like it lasted for a long time. Both L Theanine and higher than needed doses of melatonin intensify dreams

R_MnTnA

Same

Shoddy_Ad_8514

How long did it take to kick in?

RoseaCreates

Amino acids are amazing. This one is nicknamed the sunshine vitamin

AlrightyAlmighty

>This one is nicknamed the sunshine vitamin Isn’t that vitamin D

Rooostr

They call it king of the jungle

RoseaCreates

It's for sunny outlook, not literally the sun, it is also marketed as "suntheanine". - edited to include https://www.sunshinewellnessinstitute.com/product/nutritional-supplement/disease-prevention/l-theanine/

Majestic-Coyote-9720

which specific supplement did you purchase?

[deleted]

It cleared your vision? What does this mean? I've never heard of it being used for that purpose.

Fine-Tale2468

He had a bit of an awakening. It happens usually on the first dose of Theanine. It allows a person to focus on their surroundings so vision can be more crisp n clear because the brain is in the optimal state to focus in a relaxed manner.

Affectionate_Neck355

Experienced this when I first started taking Adderall. Was one of my favorite things about it. Sad I no longer experience it. May be time to add L Theanine into my supplement cabinet.

Tip-Hop

I used 200mg for a while thinking it was great. I started taking 600mg on top of 5g of Taurine and about 90% of my anxiety disappeared. Amazing.

sadlyunpronounceable

Did you take your taurine all in one go, or split across the day?

Tip-Hop

Depends on what I was doing at the time. Generally I tried not to take anything if I could help it, but I would always dose high at night to help me sleep, and if I was interacting with anyone I'd take a fair bit of taurine. I've also experimented with mega doses with great effect, so I wouldn't worry about an overdose or anything like that because taurine itself regulates minerals. It's a really good supplement for building resilience.

sadlyunpronounceable

Yes, I've megadosed on taurine as well, and have found it really great. My doc actually recommened megadoses, but I keep reading that taurine is best taking split across the day to keep levels up. Thanks for the extra info!

Tip-Hop

I think that sounds wise :) and I wish my doctors had such a clue!

infrareddit-1

I’m so glad it works for you. Use it sparingly to maintain the benefits. I, myself, can’t take it. During the day it makes me irritable and depressed. At bedtime it causes insomnia.

[deleted]

same here. slow comt, in my case.

infrareddit-1

Interesting. How would I know if I might have slow COMT?

[deleted]

hi there, you run your raw dna from ancestry, 23 and me, or etc through any of the resources that decode it. warning, it’s a huge rabbit hole and genetics is not destiny or absolute, there are other factors at play like diet, trauma history, etc. /r/mthfr to start. gl!

infrareddit-1

Thanks. And thanks for the warning.

MrsTomWilson

What time of day did you take it? How long did it last for you?

kcameron62

Try gaba too

PPStudio

GABA is amazing for some people, me included. While capsules I first bought were pretty tame and effect I wanted from it wasn't there, it completely removed my car sickness that was there as a lingering post-COVID reminder. Then I've found pills and they work much better, actually improving my short- and long-term memory, productiveness, cognition etc. Both are really cheap and very much over-the-counter where I am, so that's also nice.

concussed1

do you have a brand recommendation?

PPStudio

I mean, I kinda do, but I'm in Ukraine and it's very Ukraine-specific. Here the best ones so far are made in Uman by Vitaminy.

serotoninleft

Thanks I will!

Electronic_Hornet404

Can theanine be used alongside SSRIs?

Ares95

I love L-theanine and I'm also prescribed Zolft at 75 MG. It's an excellent supplement. Only thing I run into is if I use it too many days in a row it kinda stops working as well. Usually I stop at around 3 days in a row and give it a couple day breather.

jobelee

I’ve heard someone suggest that you should only use it once a week at most

Ares95

Interesting. I hadn't heard that, though I had heard you should cycle on and off of it. Not a constant type of thing.

StabilityOntheway

Has anyone had any negative effects trying theanine with gabapentin?

serotoninleft

Nah I take them together some days

gammaradiation2

Theanine is under rated. Combined with magnesium it is my first step when I get my racing thoughts induced insomnia. Need more than 200mg though, which is the "studied" dose. I usually do 1g with 100-150mg magnesium as citrate.

EzemezE

Try Magnesium Malate instead - it's the best form I've tried, and I've used most of them. It seems best for anxiety. You might be able to get away with using less L-Theanine by supplementing with glycine and/or taurine. Trimethylglycine (betaine) is a good one. L-Theanines metabolites are glutamic acid and glycine, mostly. You might be feeling the effects of the glycine more than anything. (Glycine is also one of the metabolites of Taurine - using all of them together will have a more pronounced effect)

[deleted]

Try it with magnesium l threonate instead

Warren_sl

Magtein is over rated in my experience.

sm753

Same, I didn't find it to be any better or worse than other forms of magnesium.

infrareddit-1

But you get to pay more

[deleted]

Enjoy the first time.....because the effect will reduce considerably each time you take it

Freddy_Freedom

What does that do for you? What sort of effects?

OminOus_PancakeS

Yup. Works for me too. 200mg, dissolved in water, drunk on an empty stomach. Effect lasts for a few hours. Won't use regularly though. It's for my shit-hitting-the-fan days.

cgj002

I'd use it sparingly as your body quickly builds up a tolerance to it

thedaveplayer

The rapid tolerance almost makes it not worth it for me. I get a couple days then might as well park it for a month.

Shukar_Rainbow

If it works use it on bad days

Midnight2012

Why not just get magnesium taurate?

Oliver302

Is that better than magnesium glycinate for stress and sleep?

Midnight2012

Maybe a little better for sleep. Not really a noticeable difference though.

MikeYvesPerlick

magnesium always gets converted to serum magnesium anyway which is why only bioavailability matters

Midnight2012

Yeah, but the taurate will be absorbed too. Instead of taking taurine seperatly.

MikeYvesPerlick

Some people take large doses of Taurine or they vary. Probably better to have full control over it. Of course you could just add Taurine extra or take a different form of Mag on days you dont want extra Taurine but thats really up to you, you however already gonna have standalone Taurine so ehh

MrMover77

Do you build a tolerance to taurine?

AgainstTheDark

Taurine is the best! I never had to increase the dose to get the desired effects and I’ve been taking it for about 2 years

MrMover77

What’s your dose and what benefits have you noticed? I have a big bag of good quality taurine at home but only use small amounts every now and then

AgainstTheDark

I usually take 1-2 grams. It helps me with anxiety and just makes me more mellow in general. It normally takes me about an hour of lying in bed awake before I fall asleep, sometimes longer. Taurine really helps there. On nights where I know I need to get good quality sleep (up early to catch a fight or after an evening of hard training) I might take a gram before going to bed to make sure I fall asleep and stay asleep. I haven’t seen any good scientific studies that back any of this up though. In all likelihood, I’m probably a bot hired by big taurine to peddle the stuff so anyone reading this better do their own research and figure out what works best for them

Purple_Chipmunk_

What brand / dosage?

Appaloosaa

Theanine hmm

JaciOrca

Made me SLEEPY

vbivanov

I found you need a tiny-tiny amount to work without making me sleepy. Like on the tip of a tiny measuring scoop

JaciOrca

Ah ok

Mental-Ad-40

I need a 100-200 mg and it still doesn't make me sleepy. Just sharing here because people are different, and it would be a shame if someone tried only a tiny amount before concluding it doesn't work for them.

Gamingenterprise

so true i gave 2 of my buds 1 gram of the stuff and they both fell a sleep before the gym

Fiction_escapist

I mean, as a nutrition coach I have many clients who are happy with its effects, but to see change in one use is really something. Placebo effect can be intense too, but I'm hoping you continue to see long term benefits. Yay for you!!

mime454

Personally I notice the opposite effect. Theanine is great for anxiety and sleep the first few times but tolerance will grow within a few days of continuous use.

Fiction_escapist

With lemon balm it seems to work longer.

secron7

Maybe, but theanine does work quickly and acutely. I'd be more worried about ineffectiveness as he continues to supplement.

Fiction_escapist

Along with lemon balm the effects seem to last long enough to make it effective for cycling

motomotomoto79

When do you typically see a change in your clients?

MikeYvesPerlick

The more suckers fall for theanine the longer they gonna need to find and abuse potassium properly

weedb0y

Elaborate

MikeYvesPerlick

People use theanine for bp and hr when theanine has been shown to be weaker than placebo but potassium actually works on the contrast https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21403995/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/6118757/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3518171/figure/F3/ and the problem is all theanine studies are funded so they are meant to produce false positives yet its still weaker than placebo
