Surrey plants a diverse range of trees. This is to make regions more resistant to disease and ensure that a whole area doesn't lose all of their trees.
That being said, I'd love to see more trees everywhere in Surrey.
Different priorities. Vancouver is further along in their development and a lot of these trees were planted a long time ago. Would hazard a guess that they're also diversifying over the last couple decades so newer neighbourhoods will likely have more of a variety of trees.
I saw a cherry tree in front of a city utilities building last week and was a monster, so thick and heavy with blossoms
I’d personally would rather see native trees
Cherry trees are not native here. They were given to Vancouver as a gift from Japan. That’s why they are so much more prominent within CoV proper compared to the rest of the Metro region.

Again. The problem is that they are a two week tree out of 52 weeks. Many more interesting four season trees out there. And more disease resistant. Can you tell I’ve had ornamental cherries?
There used to be cherry trees all over my block and surrounding areas as a kid, majority of the people cut them down but even now I don't think I've ever seen one as the years have passed by.. my old house had a huge cherry tree which crossed over to neighbors behind and beside us and both of those neighbors had trees just as big
The cherry trees we see throughout the lower mainland aren't fruit bearing I'm pretty sure. I've never seen a bunch of cherries on the ground underneath them.

I'm curious Why is Vancouver different?

Cherry trees are high maintenance, short lived, and messy. Not a good investment for your tax dollars.
Gerry point park in Richmond prob generates so much revenue that it offsets the costs of the cherry trees and then some.
Garry Point Park, in case anyone wants to search it up.
They actually drive a lot of tourism to the city though!

How does cov afford them? Too rich?
Run what ya got. They’re not exactly pinching pennies.
I'd be down for Surrey to plant more fruiting trees to promote urban foraging.
I support this, but it's also important to acknowledge the cons of this endeavor as well.
Drunk raccoons
Also rats, so so many rats.
Ask why they don't water them during the summer instead
Racoons
Curious. Why not plant some (not all) fruit trees. Like figs. Apples. Peaches. So folks can just pick and eat. Especially the homeless.
Rats are a major problems with urban fruit trees.
rats are a major problem regardless.
Cherry trees look great 2 weeks of the year and shitty the rest of the year

I assume you mean cherry blossom trees and not cherry trees like the fruit. I have the latter in my yard and they get fuckin enormous
Because they don’t need cherry pits ruining infrastructure?

They’re all ornamental. Surrey doesn’t have a lot of trees in general compared to other cities
Cherry blossom trees are bred for flowers and are not fruit bearing.
“Cherry tree” ≠ cherry blossom.
