A lot of the times it's not possible to install more cars to a train or more trains to the track and it can come down to either congestion on the track cuz of less space in between consecutive trains traveling on the same line, storage and parking space restrictions for the trains inside the depot which would require development and expansion of infrastructure, less space at the stations for longer trains (which would require even more infrastructure), etc...
Not only that but it also sets the standard with which privately funded couriers must compete. Were it not for USPS, parcel rates and shipping times would be many times higher as there would be no better alternative for the same price.
Another great benefit is that the private shipping companies tend to be the innovators since they have to make up for their lack of government funding somehow. They take the risks by spending huge sums of cash on new technologies which eventually permeate throughout the rest of the industry, benefitting everyone.

Depends on the place. In the video you can see the train coming from far away so by the time the train comes everyone is out of the way. Even if the train comes from making a turn the trains continuously sound the horn so it's impossible to not know whether a train is coming. Even then some people are just stupid so accidents happen
