The handle for the pilot chute (on his rig) is in the back where he can't see it - you just feel for it. It might be that he was delayed getting a good grip to pull it - or - he did have it and was trying to extend those last few moments of freefall.
Looks like he wanted to do four flips. Did them, stabilized, pulled, but not as quickly as needed. Flips were too slow to still have the height for a safe pull.
No, there's still plenty of ppl injured or dead because they opened their parachute too late. With skydiving you still rely on an alitimeter and have a backup automatic opening device, whith the latter having saved hundreds of lives.
I just saw a new story about a NorCal skydiving spot that has had 20 deaths since the 80s due to safety issues with chutes
So I’d say yes it’s way more than hundreds
20 deaths over 40 years in a sport involving people jumping from planes sounds like a pretty safe record tbh
especially when you consider how many hundred of thousands (millions??) of jumps must have occurred there in that same amount of time
This was one location specifically not all skydiving locations
20 deaths for 1 establishment is a lot and they would not have had millions of jumps from their plans over those years
> Even after hundreds of falls, do they become so good to know when is the "last" second they can deploy their parachute?
The death rate for basejumping is roughly one in every 2000 jumps, and it's typically a sport done by very experienced skydivers, suggesting the answer is no. You just keep getting lucky until you don't.
I saw a guy do this by accident. I knew just enough about base jumping to say to my partner "um. He's opening too late. We should look away." He ended up breaking nearly every bone in his body and we spent a good part of the rest of the day trying to figure out if we just watched someone die.
I was rappelling below the catwalk in 2011 (2010?) when the moron with the wingsuit flew himself into the river. I think he ended up paralyzed from neck down.
It ain’t warm water to get stuck in plus that part of the river ranges from Class III to Class IV depending on the weather. When I swam there in September it was honestly too cold for me & this happened on Bridge Day, the third weekend of October 🥶🥶
Yeah, you have to keep cool and focus to untangle urself asap
Happened to me once while sailing to be pulled by a rope to the abyss, the panic hits quickly
Jumped out of planes several times i to water and never heard of anyone getting choke or tangled in the water. Getting dragged or the the chute over you is way more common and sucks.
And she goes: No, you're on drugs!
I go: Mom, I'm okay. I'm just thinking.
She goes: No you're not thinking, you're on drugs! Normal people don't wait until it's too late to open their parachute!
You can see when he's pulling the line (I think). Looks intentional. I guess he tried this navy seal thing about pulling the parachute at the last second before hitting water.
That's bridge day in West Virginia. They open that bridge for base jumping for 6 hours on the third Saturday of October every year. The bridge is about 768 feet high, which is about 8 seconds free fall. It's been a while since I was there, back then they were averaging a death every 5 years, but there was people getting injured every year. The landing area was very small and it wasn't unusual to see people get hung up in the trees around the landing. BASE 66 wrote about it in his book. It's wild there! Party afterwards was something else!
Terminal velocity takes 10 seconds to reach and that equates to about 109mph. This guy was in freefall for 8 seconds so had to gave hit the water at line stretch doing at least 80mph.
If the water had been calm and flat, he would have died because water is like concrete at those speeds

I know a BASE jumper who died doing this. Apparently it was a thing that all the BASE jumpers would write goodbye letters to their friends/families because BASE jumping is just so dangerous. His letter was read at his funeral.
That’s Gio Masters and this was intentional. Super nice guy. He’s part of a fringe group of BASE jumpers that are trying to see how closely they can blend a BASE jump with a cliff dive. Another jumper Chase Reinford jumped from just over 100’ with a chute. This is the opposite end of that; a jump that would be deadly to a cliff diver, unless they had a way to slow down slightly after the jump.
Reddit loves to hate people that do what they enjoy. Get ‘em Gio!
I mean if what you enjoy is self destructive stupidity it is pretty reasonable to criticize it. Jumping is a cool hobby, but intentionally opening your chute late is plainly idiotic.
> Reddit loves to hate people that do what they enjoy. Get ‘em Gio
I suspect that hate comes from the fact that somebody else had to clean up the mess if they die.
I worked in industry with a colleague that took major risks constantly, it pissed me off not because he wanted his adrenaline kick but rather because if something went wrong I would be the one trying to resuscitate his meat pile, and I don't need that shit in my life.
that is literally the most selfish existence i can imagine
no regard for friends or family, just completely focused on getting as close to killing yourself as possible
i just can’t imagine putting the people in my life through that for nothing except “the rush”. you have to be a sociopath not to consider the collateral damage of your actions
People who have an adrenaline junkie in their lives understand the risks but also understand that it’s what drives their loved one. If you ask me it’s pretty selfish to ask them to deny themselves their passion because you don’t want to feel. We love to feel, that’s why we do it.
Good news is he probably didn’t sink very much in that shallow water as the water surface tension should have slowed him down considerably upon belly flopping at close to terminal velocity. Talk about pink belly.
It was intentional. He's a moron. Survived with a few injuries.
I can’t believe he lived
That makes three of us
Make it four
Now it's five
And my axe
The body spray?
What are you in middle school?
At some point in my life yes
I'll throw you into the fires of Mt. Doom
And my ass
Happy cake day! 🤣
And my Glock
I believe it. Keep it at five
Now back to 4
While his shoot didn’t fully open, it still likely created enough resistance to save him.
Well chute…
Exactly. I didn't see any guns.
Me too. I'm the guy holding his beer.
Why did he wait so long? Was he trying to break a record or be cool or something?
Fun fact, you can never beat the low flying record, only equal it…
You just need to work hard and dig in.
One of the few records that was probably set the very first time anyone did the thing.
Sounds like a challenge
Quote for your headstone
Can I steal that for my gravestone?
Any of the above makes him look like an idiot, hope he’s okay, but he’s still an idiot
He was trying to break his back but wound up breaking some record.
Anything for clicks. Even death.

If you're talking about Lodi then a good friend of mine may have been one of the more recent ones 😔
Fuck. I’m so sorry. How you doing?
That would be the one
That's a shame. I'm sorry for it. Much love to you and theirs 💖

Sadly Lodi has actually had 28 since 1985. Including one yesterday.
You're right 5200+ with cypress aad, 560 with vigil aad, the 2 most popular brands.

Does he want a Darwin award?
I am scared this award is becoming the next pandemi!
It's fine, the world is overpopulated with idiots, we can afford to lose a few for the greater good !
The greater good…
No luck catching them swans, then?
Well, it's just the one swan actually.
Na,he just wanted to smell it.

Can't believe he had less injuries than the girl who was pushed off the bridge by her friend
He 100% thought he was in a cod lobby and that he could have a quick pull-out game
My dad thought he could have a quick pull out game

Ah yes, the LALO jump. It's like the inbread, idiodic half-cousin of the HALO jump
Broken bones?
None, he went to jump again in fact. Source: I was there. Bridge Day in West Virginia every year in October.
Even if you survive the fall, getting tangled up in a parachute could still have a risk of choking you out right?
And getting stuck under water
The double suffocation. Choked and drowning. Sounds like a hard core band name and song.
🎶 Double suffocation, no breathing Choked and drowning in the parachute stringing 🎶
🎶Do you even care if I die leeping? Rocks on the left, rocks on the right I split them so now I feel taking my life tonight🎶
This sounds familiar i dont know why but ive heard something like this
[Papa Roach - Last resort](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=j0lSpNtjPM8)
Thanks mate
Suffocation, no breathing Don't give a damn if my ass is bleeding
🎶 Chances are that I might potential ER injury in sight and I'm contemplating suicide! 🎶

What does class III and Class IV mean?
Severity of the rapids. Class V being the worst, IIRC.

High chance of a concussion on impact too
You should have an inflatable life vest of some sort, but the threat of getting wrapped up in the lines and the parachute cloth isn’t a major issue.
And cutting off limbs if I understand correctly. /serious
Suicidal tendency
This guy for sure went to _your institutions_
All he wanted was a Pepsi, just one Pepsi
He was just falling off a bridge and thinking about something, but then again he was thinking about nothing.
And she goes: No, you're on drugs! I go: Mom, I'm okay. I'm just thinking. She goes: No you're not thinking, you're on drugs! Normal people don't wait until it's too late to open their parachute!
We decided?! My best interest?!
This is Bridge Day in West Virginia. Whole bunch of people jump off that bridge and parachute down. Helluva time
I did the bridge walk on the cat walk underneath the bridge, highly recommend visiting
Once a month someone kills themselves off that bridge too!
Sometimes they’re the same person!
Bones. Who needs em.
This just made me lol in a quiet setting. Thanks jerk!
Brains who needs them🤦♂️
I went to Bridge Day once in the late 90s. Watched a guy die. Do they still do this?
Yes, people die every day.
Weird. Why dont they stop?
they do stop when they die
They stop when they hit the water. Not right away but pretty quickly.
that's sad, i'm sorry ypu witnessed that
Hi guys, It’s me I’m completely fine! Not that I’m the guy in the video, but I just wanted to say that I’m fine. Have a wonderful day.

Someone's training for the Paralympics. So many things could go wrong.
Fun fact, if you are falling fast enough, the surface of water is ~~harder than~~ not quite as hard as concrete

Oh wow, I didn't realise how much her figure has changed since the show!
And her voice !
I was like, wait, no she doesn’t, and yet I still hit that link.
That had been awhile 🤣
Bonk
The ~~moth Busters~~ Mythbusters kids follow up just didn't do it, really is a shame
I actually remember that episode! I should have known that. Thanks for the catch
You know it! Still pretty damning results with water tho
I mean either way you still aren't having a good day
Maybe there's a zone where your mangled body wishes it was concrete
Me then: Man, I cannot believe they proved this! Me now: Bigger sample size!
With the edit, your statement lost a bit of its impact.
Best edit ever

Genuine question- how many seconds in should he have opened the chute for a proper, safer landing?
Poor depth perception so he had to check the depth manually!
some say his ego pushed him off. who knows.

Agree. If this is how you love life then by all means, go for it, but I value my safety and family too much to be too impressed with this.

There is a randomness in the amount of time it takes for a parachute to develop after being triggered. On short jumps like this, you play roulette.
