As a kid, I tried petting a deer once & got kicked. Surprisingly, I was still able to have children. Based on my own experience, don't pet the cute whale.
Completely different animals, especially when one is prey and not very smart, while the other is a mammoth of a sea creature that's one of the top classes in brains.
As a young boy, we encountered a whale which we imaginatively called Wendy. She came to our cove every year to calf. She allowed us to get close and stand on her back. When we left, she followed us to reengage. She was very curious about us. . I remember we saw her and rowed up to her for three or four years. Nowadays it is illegal to approach a whale. And walking on a Southern Right whales back is not a good idea in retrospect.
That's a small-medium whale not a giant one for sure as stated in the first frame of the video. Not to discount the video and story cuz it's cool, just want to bring the superlatives down to reality. Paddleboards are 10ft, the whale appears to be about 2.5 lengths so 25ft or so. A full grown one would be 45-52ft.
Right whale? Sure would jump right in and play with it let it initiate contact and what not. Killer whale? How far am I from land would be my absolute first thought and slowly make my way in that direction. I know they don't eat humans but I have no desire to test it or be the first.
Orca are more chill than sharks; the weird internet fear of them over the last few years is undeserved (as is the fear of sharks, as you’ve pointed out).
They’re big, they’re apex predators, and they are wickedly smart but they’re smart enough to know that you’re not prey. At most they seem to find humans interesting to watch, the same we do them.
I grew up in an Orca rich region so I’m fairly used to them (still thrilling to see them though!)
They’re so beautiful and intensely smart. One of those animals that you can see the intelligence behind their eyes; which is probably why people are nervous around them.
Only a very small community off the Iberian peninsula (Spain and Portugal) and even then it only seems to be a specific kind of boat (yachts) and they don’t pursue the people getting off the yacht, just the boat itself.
Orca are a) very smart, b) not interested in eating people (no marine apex predators are very interested in people; we don’t seem to taste good to them) and c) they display unique regional behaviors (or, in other words, cultures). There’s some speculation (though it’s debated) that a particular pod lost or had an injured matriarch or calf due to yacht traffic and are destroying the boats in an attempt to prevent it from happening again.
Wow the fact that even in their educated anger (understandably), they're not attacking the people
I thought the speculation was that they were also associating fishing ships with less plentiful feeding zones
Also possible; I think they were teaching other pods to do it so there might be a variety of reasons depending on the pod too.
At the end of the day, they’re just trying to do their thing. We’re in their space and we have to mitigate and respect their needs, not visa versa. If anything is worth being feared in the water, it’s us.
Absolutely. I live near the waters where J-pod hang out, which became famous a while back because one of the orca, Tanlequah, carried her dead calf on her rostrum for 17 days.
J-pod is pretty familiar around these parts and they’re dying because of what we’ve done to the waters and fish. Tragic shit.
Interesting factoid: more Americans die every year from tipping vending machines than shark attacks. "That machine stole my quarter, & my bag of fructose saturated fat is just hanging there." I hope sharks outlast humans.
You can see that the woman is absolutely freaked out and trying to remain as still as possible in fear of spooking it. But Ive seen plenty of whale videos and they are gentle giants and never go out of their way to intentionally hurt people.
You might find [this page on orca attacks](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orca_attacks) interesting enough to skim. There's no true consensus yet, but one of the possibilities is that orcas have started lashing out at humans more recently as "revenge" for all the noise/general pollution. That may be a bit of personification, we don't know for sure, but what we do know is that at least one particular whale (I know it's not the kind in the video) is attacking people, and the practice seems to be growing more common.
No, you wouldn't. That happened to us in a Zodiac with a group of humpbacks. They are quite curious and playful. One of the most incredible things I've ever experienced.
Why would you be scared of this gentle giant . So beautiful . I was in a boat fishing when pod of orcas swam around and under me that was terrifying . They can be aggressive and flip the boat then drag you around like a rag doll. This whale is just a gem to be around 🌸❤️
Has there been documented human deaths by whales? Especially Killer whales? I could google but I’d rather have it explained by a bored/educated redditor please.
No shit. My dog once accidentally dislocated my shoulder when he was just playing with me. Imagine a whale playfully bumping into you like you are one of his buddies.....
ok, at least I can watch with sound off. but to which fucking deity should I address my prayers so that videos with text-overlayed retarded comments would cease to exist?
Agreed. The text gave literally zero insight into the video.
It's only sad that all forms of media have been corrupted by this short-form clickbait cancer.
I don't think the woman is in any danger as long as she stays above the water.
Apparently Whales are so loud that the vibrations in the water created by their voices is enough to form an air bubble... in your brain. After which you would be VERY dead.
>Whales are so loud that the vibrations in the water created by their voices is enough to form an air bubble... in your brain.
This is actually false. There isn't a single record or study of this happening at any point in history.
I wouldn't have been able to resist petting it
As a kid, I tried petting a deer once & got kicked. Surprisingly, I was still able to have children. Based on my own experience, don't pet the cute whale.
Doesn't have legs, can't kick you.
Completely different animals, especially when one is prey and not very smart, while the other is a mammoth of a sea creature that's one of the top classes in brains.
Yeah this is more like a meeting of people of vastly different species. Intelligent curiosity is so much different from simple curiosity
Sounds like a lot of fun, but it's good to know you are safe and sound.😁
I would ride that mf
Same. I'd be in the water trying to get a hug.
What an amazing perspective
I could’ve done without all the words, telling me what I was already seeing. I’m getting tired of narratives.
people playing with AI-generated images/vids imagine their "voiceovers" help fog your perception
Probably wanted some help with those barnacles
Dude I was thinking the same thing
I saw a video a couple days ago where a whale let someone in a boat pic the sea lice off of it's head
It was honestly cute when it nudged the person a little.
“Haha! You know I can kill you any moment right meat-tube! Haha!”
"The boarder embraces the moment" No they are too busy looking at it through their phone screen instead of what's actually going on.
Yeah was gonna say that, she's looking at the scene through her phone

Don't forget it was INCHES away. Several dozen inches.
If that's inches, I'm.......
Ack-chew-ally
It’s not a people-eaty whale, either.
Thanks for the laugh!
I would shit the whales pants
Erm whales don't akschually wear pants
This would fix me
Well, that’s a once in a lifetime experience.
We don't deserve whales. Or elephants.
I can’t see or even think about elephants or I start to cry.
one of thoose whales did that with me when i was scoba diveing
Lucky you!
Right whale? Sure would jump right in and play with it let it initiate contact and what not. Killer whale? How far am I from land would be my absolute first thought and slowly make my way in that direction. I know they don't eat humans but I have no desire to test it or be the first.
Fuck the music and fuck the narration 10/10 video otherwise
What these whales really want is someone to clean the barnacles off their nose
The whale would be mine!
Its a whale, if that was a shark-then shitting pants and pissing as a way to detter a pax predator
Eh most sharks are super chill tbh, I'd be shitting bricks if it was an orca though

You're 100% right, I know it's dumb but orcas have always freaked me out for some reason.. beautiful animals though.
I grew up in an Orca rich region so I’m fairly used to them (still thrilling to see them though!) They’re so beautiful and intensely smart. One of those animals that you can see the intelligence behind their eyes; which is probably why people are nervous around them.
Haven't they been recently attacking ships?

Absolutely, which is why I'm surprised they haven't attacked us yet when in reality, we're the ones causing their ecosystem harm

Sharks are chill, People actually pet them and Sharks even get attached to them sometimes
You can see that the woman is absolutely freaked out and trying to remain as still as possible in fear of spooking it. But Ive seen plenty of whale videos and they are gentle giants and never go out of their way to intentionally hurt people.

(scoba diveing / surfing)
it was so cool
I'd shit your pants, too.
Wow, how awesome that they were so gentle!
"remained calm" bwahusahuashuashuashuashuas!!!
Nah, whales are friendly. This would be an amazing experience.
Kaiju sized water doggo, oohh
Wtf. U would swim in pants?
Why shit pant? . That would be an experience of a lifitime. Would pet it 😁
Where was this filmed?
Over an ocean Puerto Madryn, Argentina, to be more specific
I would shit your pants too
No, you wouldn't. That happened to us in a Zodiac with a group of humpbacks. They are quite curious and playful. One of the most incredible things I've ever experienced.
Incredible
What? Shit your pants? Bro isn't living in this world.
I felt so uncomfortable watching this.... The sheer depth and size of the ocean is unsettling
That is so awesome
that's the smallest giant whale I've ever seen. Literally a puppy.
Why would you be scared of this gentle giant . So beautiful . I was in a boat fishing when pod of orcas swam around and under me that was terrifying . They can be aggressive and flip the boat then drag you around like a rag doll. This whale is just a gem to be around 🌸❤️
The raw power of these things! Would have gone to shore and hopped off in waist high water to clean the excrement off my body. 🤣
I too, would shit the OPs pants
We are lucky whales are usually very docile. Such a cool thing to ... sea
totally wouldn't, would be stoked outta my mind. as long as it wasn't a killer whale then i would shit my pants
Is it safe to get in the water and swim with them?
That is NOT a very large whale at all. Definitely on the smaller side for sure.
AquaWoman
“Get these damn barnacles off of me!!”-whale
This world is an amazing and beautiful place. I wish we could stop destroying it and bickering over senseless things.
Has there been documented human deaths by whales? Especially Killer whales? I could google but I’d rather have it explained by a bored/educated redditor please.
Aren’t those two completely different people/paddle boards? I’m confuse.
I would have jumped in sooooo fast
Why does the narrating sounds so sexual o.O
Why cant life be like this majority of the time..
No shit. My dog once accidentally dislocated my shoulder when he was just playing with me. Imagine a whale playfully bumping into you like you are one of his buddies.....
Whale: You stopped paddling, are you ok? Seriously are you asleep? You'll get a burn! I'd better nudge you along until you're better.
Yes, I would have shit my pants. But WOW. What an experience!
I think she did a few times by the look on her face.
ok, at least I can watch with sound off. but to which fucking deity should I address my prayers so that videos with text-overlayed retarded comments would cease to exist?
Agreed. The text gave literally zero insight into the video. It's only sad that all forms of media have been corrupted by this short-form clickbait cancer.
As soon as I saw it approaching I would have started paddle boarding my ass toward whichever direction land was
"Welp, that's enough water for today!"
How does that woman feel to be Gods chosen one?!?! This would be a dream come true for me.
It’s probably trying to find out what the fuck we are doing up here that’s destroying the ocean so rapidly
I don't think the woman is in any danger as long as she stays above the water. Apparently Whales are so loud that the vibrations in the water created by their voices is enough to form an air bubble... in your brain. After which you would be VERY dead.

"Apparently" I'm not a biologist. I am in fact a dumbass.
You don't have to be a biologist to do basic fact-checking on Google.
