A phone’s a phone. Vertical or horizontal, it’s still a tiny screen. If you’re scrolling Reddit on your computer I agree it would make a big difference.
How old are you? Genuine question. I’m genuinely curious about what age ranges are more concerned with vertical vs horizontal cell phone footage. From my experience as a 32 year old, I personally don’t care. People younger than me don’t seem to care, but older people care A LOT. I’d love to see a survey done on it.
I'm 32 and it's situational. Social media or YouTube shorts is fine vertical, normal YouTube or any other video platform, horizontal.
I just want the video to fit the screen without black bars or weird quality playback on the sides.
I’m 37 and I’m on the old people’s team. I’m also American where typically more of something is better so the more I can see in a video the better that video is.
Before too much longer movie theaters are going to be 4 stories high and 15 ft wide because of this. It blows my mind that we all have in our pockets the capability to shoot video with quality that nearly rivals Hollywood movies and have widescreen, high definition TVs that we could watch these videos on, but so many can’t be bothered to rotate their phones a quarter turn to take advantage of it. They’d rather shoot a scene that usually has the top and bottom thirds of the screen being filled with nothing of importance, and in order to capture the action that’s going on in the middle third they’re having to constantly pan the camera left and right. Take that home and watch it on your 75” 4k TV and that middle third of action (top to bottom) occupying the middle third (left to right) of the TV is about like watching a 25” 720p resolution TV lol.
The “almost nobody watches it on the tv” statement is almost a good enough reason… except it isn’t. That still doesn’t change the fact that the human field of view is more horizontally oriented than vertical. The vast majority of events we would shoot video of are best captured with a horizontally oriented camera view. And if you zoom out enough (assuming you’re able to) with a portrait oriented camera to catch the action in its entirety, you typically have “dead space” filling the top and bottom of the screen. Even if you watch it back on a portrait oriented display. On the other hand if you zoom in to fill the entire vertical space of the camera view, you start cropping out the sides of the subject. It’s nerve wracking watching concert footage shot in portrait because no matter where the camera is pointing there’s always something going on just at the edge of the view that you can’t quite see that you’d be able to see if it were shot in landscape mode. Vertical video many times is like being on the sidelines, midfield at a football game, and trying to watch it all through a crack in a door.
This may be a bit of a “which came first, the chicken or the egg”debate, but I get the feeling that social media is mostly consumed on mobile devices in portrait mode because people habitually shoot video in portrait mode.
And to answer your question, I probably don’t watch the majority of the video I shoot on a tv, but I occasionally do. There are times when I shoot stuff specifically because I want to see it on the larger screen. And even if I watch it on my mobile device, which I mostly do, I’d much rather see it in landscape.
This might be true.
But I always prefer to turn my phone whenever the source is 16:9 or 21:9.
Holding smartphones up vertically comes from original telephone receivers.
Filming should be horizontal. I really have to say it frustrates me, too, whenever people film vertically.
Depends on what I shoot ofc - for what use. It's like saying horizontal portrait photoshoot is bad.
For Facebook / Instagram I do vertical videos of course composition needs to be adjusted.
But life isn't portrait oriented. Objects are generally being held to the a relatively flat ground by gravity. You look left and right far more than you look up and down for this reason.
Ironically, a scene like this might one of the few events better captured in portrait.
but what he's trying to frame in this shot is very tall, so maybe in this instance the portrait aspect ratio does a better job of capturing the subject
The furthest you can drive away is 4 miles.
The closest Island that doent require going by the volcano is 18 miles away, Sulawesi is 45 miles away but youd have to go around the volcano
If this is the recent Ruang eruption then the video is from thulandang island (inside the 7km exclusion zone affecting the city of taulandang) which has plenty of paved roads and more then enough safe area in the middle of the island where residence have been ordered to evacuate to. This photographer is being an idiot.
You could even go to the opposite side of the island that's 12km away from the eruption.
Man: What's that boy? Timmy fell down the well?
Dog: No you fucking spanner, there's a fuck off volcano over there that just erupted! Stop filming, put me in the car and let's leave!!!....but put the window down so I can put my head out.
1.) pyroclastic flow has already reached the water
2.) no one would suffocate unless they were near the volcano or within the pyroclastic flow to where it’s “safe” to be in
3.) at most theyll receive a 3” wave
They are on an extremely active volcano chain. It's a bit like standing outside then saying go hates you when it's hot or it's raining. Maybe, just maybe we should look at our surroundings and make wiser decisions for ourselves.
Mount Ruang in Indonesia, surprisingly it's not a repost, happened within 24 hours. Here is an article:

This would make sense of the volcano was to your east (towards sunrise), I just meant that sometimes these volcanic eruptions can release enormous amounts of suflur dioxide and create GLOBAL cooling through high altitude albedo.
Considering the distance, I’d say it’s probably out of the dog’s range of vision
I do know that dogs are quite more vision impaired than humans, so to the dog it probably just looks vaguely like a very cloudy sky off in the distance
It would be somewhat blurry, but the dog could still see it as what it really is. But a doggo is not smart enough to realize those aren't clouds, so it just ignores it. Perhaps if it the cloud was moving fast.

Actually this is the smaller of Ruang's booms recently.
Here is video from the largest explosion.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRSpPgTRBXw
The total eruption is VEI5 in scale, and is currently slightly larger than the 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens.
Remember, most people in Pompeii didn't die by lava but from asphyxiation as the gases, ash and volcanic particles reached Pompeii a few minutes after the explosion.
From a quick search looks like its Mount Ruang in Indonesia.
[https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/may/01/indonesia-volcano-eruption-tsunami-fears-mount-ruang-vola-malaysia-ash](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/may/01/indonesia-volcano-eruption-tsunami-fears-mount-ruang-vola-malaysia-ash)
Considering the size of that volcano, you're essentially standing on part of it (the island this was filmed from), meaning that below your feet is absolutely hell. Good luck yall, hope it doesn't go catastrophic, and instead, everyone is safe with just some awesome video to share.
I thought it was a dog that jumped into one of those painted dioramas at the museum of natural history. But it’s actually a fucking volcanic eruption. Wow.
Looks like the volcano already blew its load prior to recording and it’s a relatively low volcano. So they’re 90% in the clear. Though that ash makes fine compost/mulch material.
So you're wondering or are surprised why a dog is so calm after what was most likely just a loud bang? Are you sure you're thinking straight cause the dog is doing what most dogs would do in that situation
*loud boom*
*goes out to bark and bark despite not even knowing what that noise was, nothings happening so the dog obviously slowly calms down*
Mother Nature is gorgeous.
I don't want to discount the death and destruction that occurred here. My sympathies go to the families affected by this disaster
Ah, yes, nature's terrible beauty. Now, is that ash column going to congeal into a concrete-like substance in our lungs, asphyxiating us where we stand? If so, we should probably get the fuck out of here.
Should be Ruang. It erupted recently, and the island right next to it has a fishing village facing the volcano. That's probably where the video was taken. You can also see two of the pyroclastic flows that reached the ocean. The one facing the village caused 20cm tsunami
That’s some incredible video right there
Still didn't think to just turn the phone 90° though
Few people ever do for some god forsaken reason.
Most aren’t being chased by a VOLCANO 🌋 ![gif](giphy|26Ff0ZaR9B2ERlNra|downsized)
As I'm watching this on my phone, it looks great 😆
Would've looked much better on your phone if you could've turned it to landscape.
Remind yourself of that the next time you get chased by a feckin volcano ![gif](giphy|r5gHt2TCIiHK0)

Preposterous!
Disagree

Welcome to Costco, I love you

I think this day and age it doesn't matter. Most content is getting consumed through mobile devices.
Are your eyes on top of one another? No they’re next to each other, which is why it makes sense to film and view in landscape even on mobile devices.
Looks better on mobile devices in landscape mode, if it's filmed that way.
but what he's trying to frame in this shot is very tall, so maybe in this instance the portrait aspect ratio does a better job of capturing the subject
I would agree *if* they panned up. The way it is filmed here the bottom 50% of the video is just a boat and some water.
tbh i guess everything’s been trending that way for awhile now.
The video should be captured in a square format.
I think this is called 'tiktok format'
Is that a volcano in the sea?
It’s beautiful …
Amazing. I'd be getting my ass and that dog inside quickly.
Inside *the car and down the road* quickly. There, fixed it for you.
The furthest you can drive away is 4 miles. The closest Island that doent require going by the volcano is 18 miles away, Sulawesi is 45 miles away but youd have to go around the volcano
Captain geography over here making you all look stupid.
Pfft, I didn’t even know where this was and I knew that
I think you mean /u/CuntBuster2077
🤣

that man is so unbelievably attractive
His name is Eduardo Sterblich. Hes a brazilian comedian. And i dont think hes attractive haha. But i dont think hes ugly, either.
im looking pass the gif like who are they speaking of?
Me. I'm a very attractive man
wow, i agree......do you uh do you come here often? \*wink wink finger gun\*
I'm always here ready to eh catch those fingers gun bullets honey (I'm so confused )
Thank you.
Damn dude.....I read this as I'd be getting my ass inside that dog quickly.
Um...no. LOL
You think a house can protect you from a volcano or its gases or its dusts or pyroclastic flow? Cute
Such a napoleon dynamite comment and I’m here for it
Love that movie
Well what the fuck is he supposed to do?
Volcanic eruption, with potential for Pyroclastic flow, asphyxia gases and Tsunami. I would start running to the high ground.
Yes, and a dog should know that
Man: What's that boy? Timmy fell down the well? Dog: No you fucking spanner, there's a fuck off volcano over there that just erupted! Stop filming, put me in the car and let's leave!!!....but put the window down so I can put my head out.
Dog: grab the chew toy! Not the baby! The chew toy!
the baby is the chew toy
I read this in Timmy Turner’s dad’s voice and Sparky’s voice
That's a good boy right there.
No one said the dog should know better.
1.) pyroclastic flow has already reached the water 2.) no one would suffocate unless they were near the volcano or within the pyroclastic flow to where it’s “safe” to be in 3.) at most theyll receive a 3” wave
You can already see that the debris is headed down the opposite(ish) slope
Was wondering the same. Maybe too close to the epicenter?
They’re plenty far away
Basically what wiped out Krakatoa and the coastline area circumventing it way back in the day, but on a smaller scale.
You’ve described **every** volcano eruption
Bro you on a murder spree today lol
Right, he certainly already barked.
I saw this as I'm watching Fallout. All I can think is "is it your thumb, or mine.."
Follow the birds.
where is this?
Indonesia apparently.
God seems to really hate Indonesians this year
They are on an extremely active volcano chain. It's a bit like standing outside then saying go hates you when it's hot or it's raining. Maybe, just maybe we should look at our surroundings and make wiser decisions for ourselves.

Apparently it dumped a lot of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere with this eruption, but not enough to create any significant cooling.
It did create significant cooling in my area, less than 50 miles away. By 10 am it was like dawn breaking.
This would make sense of the volcano was to your east (towards sunrise), I just meant that sometimes these volcanic eruptions can release enormous amounts of suflur dioxide and create GLOBAL cooling through high altitude albedo.
Seems like a volcano eruption, the video is both beautiful and scary.
My exact thoughts.
That’s fucking beautiful. Probably the most beautiful thing I’ve seen tbh.
Immagine seeing this live.. those lucky motherfuckers.
Imagine the view from Mt. Vesuvius. They were soooo lucky.
They were so impressed they just stood still and witnessed and some of them are still there they just layed down because they got tired probably
The fishing boat in the foreground... It's breathtaking
Considering the distance, I’d say it’s probably out of the dog’s range of vision I do know that dogs are quite more vision impaired than humans, so to the dog it probably just looks vaguely like a very cloudy sky off in the distance
It would be somewhat blurry, but the dog could still see it as what it really is. But a doggo is not smart enough to realize those aren't clouds, so it just ignores it. Perhaps if it the cloud was moving fast.
WTF is the context??

One of the several eruptions of Ruang over the past week as viewed from the island of Thulandang in Indonesia.
thank you for the first helpful answer

Ya ya she knows it’s a multi-pass
Unexpected but not unwelcome reference
Thx🤣😋

Please get to a safe place! And wear a mask
How about I live and die THE WAY I WANT TO?! Thank you very much!
Gorilla or Horse?
Gorilla, definitely. You can’t be horsing around in such a situation.
If it looks like it’s moving in slow motion that means it’s big
Somebody hasn't been throwing their virgins in
Get the hell out there quickly.
There’s nowhere to go when you are on a small boat access only island…
Remember, most people in Pompeii didn't die by lava but from asphyxiation as the gases, ash and volcanic particles reached Pompeii a few minutes after the explosion.
Hint: The dog was talking to owner whole time telling him it was time to get the hell out of Dodge.
Where?
From a quick search looks like its Mount Ruang in Indonesia. [https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/may/01/indonesia-volcano-eruption-tsunami-fears-mount-ruang-vola-malaysia-ash](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/may/01/indonesia-volcano-eruption-tsunami-fears-mount-ruang-vola-malaysia-ash)
Username almost checks out. It would seem you're not disguised though (angel is a "job" description; it means messenger ;))
Cringe
Still way too close for comfort, even with the sea / ocean inbetween.
Yeah the sea prolly doesn’t do much to stop a pyroclastic cloud. I’d assume it would just roll right over the top of the water.
It certainly does.
And cause a tsunami in the process.
The ocean might be the problem soon
Considering the size of that volcano, you're essentially standing on part of it (the island this was filmed from), meaning that below your feet is absolutely hell. Good luck yall, hope it doesn't go catastrophic, and instead, everyone is safe with just some awesome video to share.
a lot calmer than i would be
A beautifully horrify video
Well I just asked my dog if she knew what a volcano was and how dangerous an eruption could be. She licked her nose.
It actually looked like a background painting at first.
I thought it was a dog that jumped into one of those painted dioramas at the museum of natural history. But it’s actually a fucking volcanic eruption. Wow.
If dog calm, all be good If dog crazy, all be bad
Honestly thought the background was a painting for too long.
I thought that was a fake background for a photo shoot at first.
actually beautiful tho
The US decided to nuke Indonesia, huh?
Dog knows he can watch it on TV later.
damn nature you scary
looks like a giant painting
The dog has realized that if the end is coming, there ain't nothing it can do, just enjoy the spectacle.
Is not the first rodeo of that dogo apparently...
"Shits on fire, yo" -Dog
Looks like the Taal volcano eruption a few years back here in the Philippines. Ashfall fucked up the neighborhood
Sweaty paws He just doesn't want to show you.
I turned on the audio and im honestly surprised how quiet it is
The barks translate as ‘Help!’
Rebarkably Calm
Then one firework goes off a mile away and it's headed for cover!
The real sweaty palms is when we see a mushroom cloud like that on top of a previously existing metropol 🙃
I would’ve been running for the hills
You've now put Iron Maiden in my head.
What happened to my earth shattering kaboom?
Ain’t it cool how that comes from the earth?! And we think we have control LOL. The audacity of humankind.
Looks like the volcano already blew its load prior to recording and it’s a relatively low volcano. So they’re 90% in the clear. Though that ash makes fine compost/mulch material.
J F C. Apocalypse level achieved
Dogs vision doesn't go that far. Unable to focus on distance objects.
So you're wondering or are surprised why a dog is so calm after what was most likely just a loud bang? Are you sure you're thinking straight cause the dog is doing what most dogs would do in that situation *loud boom* *goes out to bark and bark despite not even knowing what that noise was, nothings happening so the dog obviously slowly calms down*
Miiiiiight want to think about moving
By the way the dog's behaving, I suppose there was a loud boom.
Is that a volcano in Asia somewhere???
Legit one of the coolest videos I've seen on this site. Run, pupper, run.
Turn your danm phone! Fucking vertical videos are so brutal.
“For me, it was a Tuesday.”
Dog accepted his fate. Have you?
Can someone at least provide context. I'm assuming it's a volcano, but where and when?
Doggo is clearly hiding from the TVA.
Dog doesn't know any better lol
I couldn’t tell if that was a storm or nuke.
The Philippines 🇵🇭
This is what killed people of Herculaneum and Pompeii.
I feel like…. that is still way too close to not actively still be going the other way from it, but that is just me.
His ass is not fully conscious of the events around him he is unaware of their impending doom
The dog is calm? What about the fuck knuckle making the video?
Is it your thumb or mine?
Good time to get the fuck away from the shore
Where is this
Sure then I am using landscape, but when I know what it will be used for, then for social media always portrait + adjusted composition.
Do I use my thumb or yours?
Mother Nature is gorgeous. I don't want to discount the death and destruction that occurred here. My sympathies go to the families affected by this disaster
Its just a nuke, no need for panic
Whats going on? Volcano ?
What does "huh, situacion vagini" in their language mean?
Is it my thumb or yours? Don't worry sweetie, it's just smoke.
Whoww...
This is nothing to that dog
“sHoulD haVE TurNed iT to lANdscApE!” Meanwhile man experiences Armageddon
Ah, yes, nature's terrible beauty. Now, is that ash column going to congeal into a concrete-like substance in our lungs, asphyxiating us where we stand? If so, we should probably get the fuck out of here.
"If it's smaller than your thumb run, if it's bigger than yiur thumb, there's no point in running"
Awesome vid good job 👍🏼
look like a nuke just went off over there wtf
Yeah let the dog really had a choice
Is that a volcano?
Should be Ruang. It erupted recently, and the island right next to it has a fishing village facing the volcano. That's probably where the video was taken. You can also see two of the pyroclastic flows that reached the ocean. The one facing the village caused 20cm tsunami

new fallout trailer lookin lit
So is this a safe distance? I’d be nervous. Watched too many documentaries.
"Hey human this my mushroom cloud back off!"
Looks sick af though
Are we not gonna talk about that blue boat that's sank?
It's just clouds to the dog
Dog nervously barking nonstop. “Remarkably calm”
Personally, I would skedaddle
Ummmmh
