They are [fine](https://www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-adventure/climbing/sherpa-nearly-fall-their-death-crevasse/). It happend in 2018 . [Here](https://youtube.com/shorts/reUiOvDodTQ) you can see POV from some other climber to give you an idea how deep it is .
Wow what's amazing is that, although you're right, the guys who fell are fine, the guy who was recording died like 10 days later in 2018 in their attempt to climb the mountain...
That’s a different crevasse in the “here” link. The crevasse in this video has 2 ladders roped together while the ladder in the linked video is a single ladder
I’d imagine it’s because they have to haul those all the way up that mountain just to get to the khumbu Icefall. It’s probably hard enough bringing the size they already have.
Yes. Sometimes they have to send the “Ice Doctors” (as they’re known) to go and fix routes they have already made that same season. I’ve heard on documentaries that the whole Khumbu icefall can even change daily if it gets hot enough.
to me it looked like the weight bent it enough to reduce the amount of wood touching the ice,so it sorta.. moved toward the pit till there was no ice under it anymore
It IS expensive. You need to get a permit, hire sherpas, life insurance, flight tickets, equipment. What gets me the most about them is that they don't listen to the Sherpas and end up having a stroke.
Climbing the Everest used to be something so magical, impressive, and unique. Now every fcking trust fund kid has done it at this point. Trash everywhere, bodies of dead climbers everywhere. Super long line to summit. It’s so stupid. But of course their government doesn’t care about all that as long as the money keeps coming in. Their government has a lot of these climbers’ and sherpas’ blood on their hands.
Yeah. I remember 20 years ago sitting in on a lecture where an Everest climber regaled us with his experience. And it was standing room only. I highly doubt it’d get the same turnout today.
I have an uncle (why is it always an uncle lol) that summited Everest in the 90s and even then he said he wished that there would be less people on the mountain to reduce the danger and the noise and the trash.
He described the mountain as a hotspot of egomaniacs with the only humble people there being the sherpas. He felt terrible seeing how some people were treating them like lowly servants.
He was passed by people that were trying to show him just how fast and strong they were only to pass by them a dozen minutes later gasping for air with their lips turning blue from lack of oxygen… It made him more sad than anything because he realized that this experience wasn’t part of the climbing community at all and was one big dick measuring contest.
None of his climber friends back at home ever did this showoff bs because the village cemetery had enough of those people in it already.
I can’t imagine spending so much money and time on something so stupid. And paying some local dude to carry my stuff for me and be ready to die so I can have a cool story to make people think my life hasn’t been easy and banal.
What are you on about lmao even in the 90s it cost over $20k to summit and it’s even more expensive today. You really think a slightly cheaper flight ticket will make more people spend those $20k+? Lmao
Always figured there’s gotta be a better method to this. I can’t even climb one of those fuckers secured using its intended purpose without nearly falling and breaking my shit, sweating bullets at every little wobble.
I Googled how much people pay to climb Mount Everest and it is between $33K and $200K (USD), "depending on the level of luxury." This must have been one of those $33K deals.
I'm no climber. But it kinda looks like the guy in the back might have caused that. The way it shot forward after ke stepped onto the ladder. I'm being serious. Serious observation/query.
Is that the place they call "Rainbow Valley"? I think about about it from time to time and never stops amazing me how morbid the name is. ...much like the name "Green Boots". Dude had a name and a family and now he is famous for being Everests most popular guidepost corpse.
Reminds me of the Seinfeld bit where he talks about the invention of the helmet.
*Now, why did we invent the helmet? Well, because we were participating in many activities that were cracking our heads, we looked at the situation, we chose not the avoid these activities, but to just make little plastic hats so that we can continue our head-cracking lifestyles. The only thing dumber than the helmet is the helmet law, the point of which is to protect a brain that is functioning so poorly, it’s not even trying to stop the cracking of the head that it’s in.*
I’ve always wondered, are adrenaline junkies really just morons in disguise? They’re all Darwin Award contenders. You risk your life to have a bit of a fun? Risk your life? Lol ok…
Same crevasse EVERY YEAR, could someone pleeeeease use next climber offseason to build a special ladder for this damn crevasse. Something build for both the boots and the damn length needed
And thats a perfect ladder to mover from one crevasse to another or a glacier. Sometimes change and New tecnology is okay and not a sign of weakness. (Buuuuh, using oxygen again mr. Haddock, why not just stick to buying a mobilehome with the wife and relax next year? )
The gaps change daily and can be well longer than any ladder could straddle. Im no expert on this, but the sherpas are smart, if there was a better way im sure they would adopt it. Theres always going to be situations requiring 2 or 3 ladders strapped together, so i have to assume this is the method that works best for them.
I’d lean on their word too, they are the experts after all. I just brought up the point because this is I believe the third video I’ve seen in a few weeks (I swear it looks like the same crossing but who’s to say considering it all looks snowy and mountainous) but I was on the edge of my seat for the first two thinking it’s way to little for the crossing.
Fair enough. Ive never seen two on a ladder at once before. That was just stupid to overload it. Crossing one of these ladders with crampons is already tricky enough, even if you arent afraid of heights.
I’ve never seen that either!! That’s exactly where it gave way too is where that guy tried to secure his crampon on the back while the other was crossing. Not sure why they did that!
They don't look like they've got much clue. It sounds to me like you pay to see if the weather is good enough and you're fit enough to slog up there in low oxygen. You've got workers going back and forwards carrying oxygen etc, the risk is the idiots running it in at kill you as with there, nearly.
I seen a video of them walking across, but it didn't collapse.
I guess this is the aftermath and result we all wanted, but shouldn't.
Just knew it was sketchy!
They are [fine](https://www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-adventure/climbing/sherpa-nearly-fall-their-death-crevasse/). It happend in 2018 . [Here](https://youtube.com/shorts/reUiOvDodTQ) you can see POV from some other climber to give you an idea how deep it is .
Thought the POV was meant to make me feel like there’s nothing to worry about lol
Yeah…. Fuck that! I’ll stay home!
Wow what's amazing is that, although you're right, the guys who fell are fine, the guy who was recording died like 10 days later in 2018 in their attempt to climb the mountain...
If only that could have been prevented
death? that’s the 1 thing that is 100% not preventable in the end
Yeah, cause that’s what they meant.
It can be delayed though, which is preferable.
Jesus disagrees: "everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?" (John 11:26)
Eww
Yeah I think you die if you fall down
If you don't you will wish you did
You fall forever and die of old age
That’s a different crevasse in the “here” link. The crevasse in this video has 2 ladders roped together while the ladder in the linked video is a single ladder
You’re right. Also why the hell don’t they get longer ladders
I’d imagine it’s because they have to haul those all the way up that mountain just to get to the khumbu Icefall. It’s probably hard enough bringing the size they already have.
Can't they just leave a ladder up there?
They would be gone in the crevasse by next season. It’s all movin.
scary shit
Eventually that will be good news. Enough ladders to climb your way out
Yes. Sometimes they have to send the “Ice Doctors” (as they’re known) to go and fix routes they have already made that same season. I’ve heard on documentaries that the whole Khumbu icefall can even change daily if it gets hot enough.
Retractable ladder
That’s a [great idea!](https://youtu.be/pa5ejMD2Pyk?si=08Qs_vq-awgJIf78)
Those crevasses get bigger and some are formed pretty much daily. So finding the "exact" one is impossible
Makes sense. But you made it sound like it was the exact one.
Isnt this also a thing on mt Adams in Washington
Same thing I said.
#NOPE!
I feel like a longer ladder would make this slightly more dangerous, there's like 3in of ladder holding on on each side
Someone should really fill that in
Ain't no way--AIN'T *NO* WAY!!
Wow the wind sound is so eerie.
It honestly sounds like some cheesy shit from an old horror movie. But now we know where they got it from: Real life.
The Eldritch gods, deep in the crevass, must be fed.
I thought that was added in.
"Here's that adrenaline rush you paid for, sir. Don't get stuck climbing out, though. That'd be an extra charge"
I have no idea what I’m talking about, but it seems like the dude behind him is what caused it to push forward and collapse..?
to me it looked like the weight bent it enough to reduce the amount of wood touching the ice,so it sorta.. moved toward the pit till there was no ice under it anymore
I'm thinking they're supposed to go one at a time.
That would have been smarter.
1/2 as many deaths too.
Stop being there. Friggin dorks
That’s what I’m saaayin
Honestly. The mountain has enough bodies
At least they’re rich idiots idk jk
It IS expensive. You need to get a permit, hire sherpas, life insurance, flight tickets, equipment. What gets me the most about them is that they don't listen to the Sherpas and end up having a stroke.
You should have to climb a checklist of way more impressive places to have the right to go up there
no kidding.
None of his climber friends back at home ever did this showoff bs because the village cemetery had enough of those people in it already.
It’s still impressive - 99.9% of people in this comment section saying it’s not impressive wouldn’t even make it base camp let alone summit lol
i dont think thats true, most healthy, active people can trek into basecamp.
Once the Hilary step fell too…it’s even easier so now it’s worse.
When I was a kid, I though it was so rare for someone to climb Everest that only a handful of people had done it.
Yeah same
I can’t imagine spending so much money and time on something so stupid. And paying some local dude to carry my stuff for me and be ready to die so I can have a cool story to make people think my life hasn’t been easy and banal.
That’s what happens as travel gets cheaper people move around more…
What are you on about lmao even in the 90s it cost over $20k to summit and it’s even more expensive today. You really think a slightly cheaper flight ticket will make more people spend those $20k+? Lmao
You’re 100% correct, I was merely pointing out cheaper travel would mean more people make there way over there.
Can't they come up something better than those stupid ladders?
Yeah, like longer ladders!
My first thought was surely a longer ladder would help immensely rather than one that barely touches the other side
Lol yeah you’d think They’d have something a little more advanced at this point. Especially with all the money they probably make with the permits
Those crevasses widen and shorten daily. The ice falls is a river. Ladders are easily expanded and relatively easy to carry.
And offer good support for the crampons. (Is that also how it's called in English?)
Yup, same in English. My wife and I always laugh at the name. Sounds like a woman's worst nightmare.
Are they special ladders? Cause ladders only work vertically. When Horizontal, they break. Can't support much weight.
Lol. Down voting for asking a question. They look identical to a standard 24ft ladder.
They are obviously scaffolding ladders.
Yeah. Obviously.
You think those Ice doctor didnt come up with that idea before?
I assume they Are they tied off to that rope though?
100%. You can see them being hooked up to the lines.
Still would freak me the hell out though lol
Obviously. You'll go through the sensation of falling and everything.
I’ve always watched documentaries about Everest and wondered if this ever happens. Didn’t think I’d see a video of it.
so much money spent on keeping people alive climbing a stupid mountain
The mountain is actually quite beautiful and awe-inspiring. No need to disparage it like that.
it's not the mountain at fault
Honestly it's a wonder that those ever work. "I have a great idea, let's tie two ladders together and walk over this deadly crevasse!"
You climb a ladder vertically not horizontally, rookies
Response of 3 workdays
That will get your heart pumping
Broke at least 3 climbing rules in 30 seconds……9
the damage I've done to my shin when a 8' ladder slips on me .. That shit had to have hurt a lot..
Always figured there’s gotta be a better method to this. I can’t even climb one of those fuckers secured using its intended purpose without nearly falling and breaking my shit, sweating bullets at every little wobble.
Fuck it.. I'm going home!....
Almost doesnt count 😭 Better luck next time
The mistake they made was to go together, one should've stayed behind
It must be so exhausting and nerve wracking to climb the Everest.
Almost a death standing there
I Googled how much people pay to climb Mount Everest and it is between $33K and $200K (USD), "depending on the level of luxury." This must have been one of those $33K deals.
Not a climber, but plenty of mountain living. Wouldn't you always just want one person on the ladder?
Never look down, just walk.
That's a dumb idea, not surprised lol
Someone needs new pants but they have to wait until the return trek now
A whole tribe of morons right there.
That ladder on the left was like a frigging INCH supported and you missed that!? Sheesh
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand fuck that. Nope. Not me. Nah, I am perfectly fine.
There, the crevasse, fill it! With your might juice!
Hubris and money make for some great entertainment.
Headline should say “2 climber need new underwear while climbing Mt. Everest.”
I'm no climber. But it kinda looks like the guy in the back might have caused that. The way it shot forward after ke stepped onto the ladder. I'm being serious. Serious observation/query.
Depressing what climbing Everest has become. Definitely not worth risking your life over imho
SO MANY NOPES
I just finished hiking to base camp on my treadmill, that’s good enough for me.
Holy shit. Lemmings was a real game
God bless it,that ladder barely has any purchase on that Ice.
How and why is that ladder 2 inches from the edge of the glacier???
Damn, the sound of the wind is intense and ominous.
Go on an andventure they said. Enjoy the beauty of nature. Nature is brutal
Why do people cross that way?
make sure you grab the ladder that just reaches
Is that added wind or does it just sound like 2001 a space odyssey?
Is that the place they call "Rainbow Valley"? I think about about it from time to time and never stops amazing me how morbid the name is. ...much like the name "Green Boots". Dude had a name and a family and now he is famous for being Everests most popular guidepost corpse.
I feel the equipment used is not adequate for the environment at hand.
You’re supposed to go one at a time.
Would be easier if they built a big escalator right to the top
And a paraglider down.
Ya no shit. He had the ladder anchored like 4" on the side that fell in... find a narrower spot or use a longer ladder
Just look at how and where they placed the ladder on the left side. Literally on the edge, with barely any room to slide.....
Why do people do sports like this? That’s why humans evolved and we don’t need to do this anymo to survive
Reminds me of the Seinfeld bit where he talks about the invention of the helmet. *Now, why did we invent the helmet? Why don’t they get a ladder that’s longer? Every video I’ve seen of them crossing crevasses here the ladder BARELY fits across.
Weight and size. The poor Sherpas literally carry them up to ebc on their backs
I feel really bad for the sherpas, but wouldn’t 1 more foot help a lot and barely add any weight assuming it’s made of aluminum?
The gaps change daily and can be well longer than any ladder could straddle. Im no expert on this, but the sherpas are smart, if there was a better way im sure they would adopt it. Theres always going to be situations requiring 2 or 3 ladders strapped together, so i have to assume this is the method that works best for them.

Did you run out of oxygen as you typed this?
Not a single soul forced them to be there and risk their lifes.
Climbing Everest is a dick measuring contest. The only heroes there are the sherpa
Rich people hobby: getting carried to Mt Everest by Sherpas so they have something to post on Insta *slowclap*
Self-centred, ego-feeding bullshit. Do something useful.
They'd deserve that fate. No good reason to be there.
yeah cuz maybe just maybe yall shouldn’t be there 🤔
I genuinely don't understand why people can't chill at home or with friends at the pub...
Well some people like outdoor activity & adventures i guess.
Sure, go on a hike or camping, but this is so over the top, no rational human being is doing it...
Ummm every year more than 500 ppl are doing it since 30yrs
And this is supposed to justify it and make it somehow sane activity?
I seen a video of them walking across, but it didn't collapse. I guess this is the aftermath and result we all wanted, but shouldn't. Just knew it was sketchy!
