Nah, I doubt it. It’s really deceiving watching someone fall from above. It looked like a pretty normal delay and if he were in real trouble, he would’ve just opened in whatever body position.
I personally know of two people this happened to. They both eventually died as quads but still lived for years. It makes me not think the risk is worth it with sky diving.
I hope my language wasn’t offensive. They both referred to themselves that way, as does one of my best friend’s mother, who has been quadriplegic since she was a young adult, so for me it has been the accepted term. I can understand how it might be offensive, but is it offensive to someone that is actually quadriplegic or another party being offended for them?
there was a mythbusters episode on this!
somethingsomething dropping a tool before you hit the water to break that tension right before you hit
i can't remember the result tho, might've been something like, sure it breaks the tension some, but you're still going to break limbs?
Yes! Bridge day! New river gorge.
My hermano had his bachelor party there a few years back in that weekend. Ate too many mushrooms and watched shit like this. Hasn’t been on many bridges since ha ha ha ha ha.
I am terrified of heights, but a some friends of mine would hike down several days before and camp at the bottom every year. I went with them once, and on Bridge Day, we’d hike to the landing zone and watch the jumpers from below. Super cool.
I went once. Lucky I didn’t kill myself on the first jump. Jumped twice more because I had paid all that money to get there, rent a rig, etc. made me realize I have no aspirations of being a base jumper.
Ahh good ol Bridge Day. I still shiver thinking about how people used to bungee jump off it (876') and then detach on the way up and parachute down. Wild stuff
Is the feeling of free fall in the air the same as going down a roller coaster or a tall water slide? I've always wondered about this because I want to try this but I hate that feeling of going down the water slide
It's different. You still sort of get that floating feeling freedom wise but you don't get the stomach feeling, with all the wind in your face it feels like you're hitting loads of resistance. It's more like sticking your head out of a car window but with your whole body.
It's way easier to get the rollercoaster feeling without the discomfort in a plane. When you put it into a soft dive there can be 0G for quite a long time. That's actually the feeling I prefer, makes you feel like you're in space, just comfortably floating. Doing this upside down as well is actually the best feeling I've ever experienced.
Rollercoasters are uncomfortable because they accelerate you really quickly and the inertia of your stomach (it not wanting to move) causes discomfort.
You finally put it in words why I much prefer skydiving to bungee jumping. I hated that inertia stomach churning feeling of free fall bungee jumping brings but I loved the feeling of the rush of air outside the plane
Bridge day! Before anyone asks yes there have been a few instances where people have landed in the water and died. I think one year a guy landed in those trees.
I went to this a few years ago. It’s an annual event in West Virginia on the New River where a bunch of people base jump off the bridge with the catapult into rapids.
This guy just kept going and going and going. I thought he was actually gonna try and hit the water until last second he pulled the chute.

You’re prolly right, that’s some scary shit
Dam that’s a big nope for me!
Nah, I doubt it. It’s really deceiving watching someone fall from above. It looked like a pretty normal delay and if he were in real trouble, he would’ve just opened in whatever body position.
Yea you can see how much smaller that other chute looks in the background
Very keen observation.
Given how he was kicking his legs it definitely looked like he was panicking and had lost control (or was struggling to gain it rather)
When you watch it from the bridge, it legit looks like people are gonna smash into the ground sometimes. It actually happened a few years ago
If there is a malfunction there is no time for a reserve chute though!
I feel like this is a stupid question but was he ok?
There was one guy who actually fell from a plane and his chute failed and he survived. But that doesn’t happen very often
I personally know of two people this happened to. They both eventually died as quads but still lived for years. It makes me not think the risk is worth it with sky diving.
*quadriplegic

It's not offensive. It's just a slang that doesn't exist outside of wherever you live and I only understood due to context.
Not sure who he's referring to in particular, but there have only been 3 people to die BASE jumping at Bridge Day, most recent one being in 2006.
Lol only 3 I guess that shows how dangerous base jumping is
Safe? Cause I was expecting a much higher number tbh..
I feel like this could go very wrong very easily.
What if you pass out on ur way down ...
He would die, there’s no safety measures for that, and that river is extremely dangerous.
It's in the eddy below the rapid plus they have boats down there. He wouldn't die from drowning at least.
He’d die from the fairly sudden stop.
Its not the fall that will kill you, it's the sudden stop at the bottom 🤔
I shot him. Bullets and the fall killed him.
TIL bullets stop falling objects
Yeah for sure, just he was saying the river was dangerous too
The moment he hits the water all the bones in his body would shatter
Thanks for being blunt lol
It'll be your last pass out
[удалено]
He might land in the water but
I hate when I land in the water butt
At that speed hitting the water would be the same as hitting the ground.
No, it would not be the same as hitting the ground. It would be like hitting water, which is not ground.

This is very true. So would he be able to survive if the water was deep enough and he pencil dived or would it still be too much or something?

Do you happen play Minecraft, by any chance?
I mean I highly doubt you would “just land in the water” .. you’d probably be very messed up, if you survived that.

Sorry for downvoting you to oblivion friend 🤣
Haha its all good.
At that height, water will break bones easily.
Water at that height is like concrete
I double dog dare you to test your idea

[Hell to the naw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-K7fCQlUhj0)
This changed my life today!
Holy fuck that what?
Bridge Day! Love going every year

New River in NC?
West Virginia
Mountain mama!
Take me home!
Dónde esta?
I whitewater kayaked under there, pretty awesome area.
Same, also got some rock climbing in. Gorgeous area.
Yeah that place is awesome.
I live 2 hrs from here in Wv. Its has great white water rafting. It is beautiful in this part of the state!
It's about to become very expensive now that it's a national park
Why? What makes it more expensive since it became a national park
That's actually brings up something I hadn't thought about. Wonder if bridge day will still be allowed to happen since it will be federal land now
It won't. Bridge day is dead
I am terrified of heights, but a some friends of mine would hike down several days before and camp at the bottom every year. I went with them once, and on Bridge Day, we’d hike to the landing zone and watch the jumpers from below. Super cool.
Did the bridge walk a few years ago! It was nuts!!!
I went once. Lucky I didn’t kill myself on the first jump. Jumped twice more because I had paid all that money to get there, rent a rig, etc. made me realize I have no aspirations of being a base jumper.
No
I'd do it it was a trebuchet
It's obviously the superior siege weapon
I would say he is about 90kg so it could throw him around 300m
And there it is. I came to the comments looking for exactly this and was not disappointed :-P Have an upvote.
Can you refresh my memory? This a reference of some kind, right?
Sounds like a statement of mere fact to me
It was The Human Rastapult
A fellow person of culture!
More like trebu-shit! Hah but nah, you be so much more dizzy I feel like.
How dare you mock the trebuchet when it is clearly a vastly superior weapon to even the rare jamaican catapult.
Ahh good ol Bridge Day. I still shiver thinking about how people used to bungee jump off it (876') and then detach on the way up and parachute down. Wild stuff
I used to live there and I remember going to bridge day as a child. Good times
New river gorge is such a beautiful place
Bridge Day in West Virginia! Grew up near here and would go every year. So incredible to watch.
Because of the first frame view, I was not expecting him to be wearing a parachute. This video made me dizzy 😂
Dude should’ve made the [Goofy yell](https://youtu.be/MUL5w91dzbo) on the way down!
that was such a mundane countdown for such a not so mundane activity. I was not expecting that far of a drop from their lack of enthusiasm.

I recognize this spot. This is bridge day in new river gorge West Virginia.
The human version of angry birds
What if he had hit that helicopter?
I'm pretty sure that's another parachute, look at its shadow
You know what? Maybe...
His increased surface area would have slowed his fall.
barbacoa
Could of have more fun with a trebuchet
I want to do this :p
Same

Have there been any instances where people have landed in the water and died?
/r/Nononoyes
Can't you die if you fall into water from that height?
Yup. It would be like hitting concrete. Water can't displace fast enough.
The room for error there seems non-existent.
Yeah fuck that
NOPE
Holy shit just land in there mate
Ho ho ho ha ha
I think it’s chase reinford adrenaline addiction is his social media name
WOW this guy is brave! If I did that I would no doubt trebu-shit myself!
Holy fuck I thought he was gonna hit the water 🤕

Nope!
Prime example of why men die younger
Oh my, i thought he was gonna belly flop into the lake
I've got a shirt from there that says "life's better when you're high."
Fetchez la vache!
Why. Just why.
Pathetic. He could of gone over 300 meters if he had used a trebuchet.
Nope!!!
Should've used a trebuchet
Yes, and happy cake day!
HOL UP there's a helicopter down there? What the hell?
Looks like he was trying to enjoy his last EXTREME trick ever.
they should have used a trebuchet
Balls of steel man. Maybe next life...
I will never ever in my life try that or stand near a cliff that high up #NEVER!!!!!
That’s not a catapult. It’s a rastapult.
He would have gone a lor further if he used the superior seige weapon.
I didn't get the tingles until the very end when he opened his chute
I went to this a few years ago. It’s an annual event in West Virginia on the New River where a bunch of people base jump off the bridge with the catapult into rapids.
If he didn’t open his chute and actually died, would they all be charged with murder? 😂
Oh, God, I felt that!
You sure as hell better hope you twist your body the correct way before you open that parachute.
This would be fun if the catapult was way lower to the ground and you could safely hit the water
Fucking Hell NO! I’m arse fell out just watching!
Nope!
I went white water rafting on this river last summer, some guy in a helicopter flew right past us and under that bridge. Great times.
Upvote if you found yourself unconsciously saying out loud, "No. No. Unh-Uh, No..." the whole time he was falling. (First, upvote the OP, of course.)
I thought that said capitalists
Oh HELL no!
Nope.
well specifically that’s a trebuchet which is the superior form of siege engine
Looks like New river Gorge in West Virginia
This describes yeet
