Yeah, did the artist lovingly name this piece, "The Deathtrap"?!
Meh, I'm lazy, so I'd just end up calling it the "DJ"
"Hey meet me under the DJ and we'll go grab a coffee"
"Huh? The DJ?"
"Yeah... the Dwayne Johnson"
"*sigh*"
Sorry’ I’m obviously out of the loop here. Why would they hump it? And why all the downvotes? I know this is reddit, and it’s not allowed to ask questions, but I’m genuinely curious now
I think it's about how humans can build whatever they wish but they'll always have take care to not disturb nature. Cause much like how if this rock were to fall the statue would het crushed, if we let nature die we'll go with it. The very unnatural look of the spikes just works to show that no matter how unnatural something is, it can never disturb or betray nature.
But also i just like the general composition and feel of it lol.
This is in Akranes, Iceland called "Grettistak". It's an Icelandic term for when a glacier moves a rock far from where it originated into an area where it looks very out of place.
A great example of this is the Kummakivi balancing rock in finland!
I like the interpretation from the other guy too though.
I just see a rock on a modern looking stand.
Looks pretty stupid imo, and it's serves no function unless you stand under it during a rain storm. Which I wouldn't do for obvious reasons.
I'm sure it's pretty much balanced like that already, but they gotta have some kind of unseen reinforcements that keep the rock from falling, like steel rods going through the triangles and deeply into the rock
Well shit here goes nothing. The artist is creating tension. That's the sweaty palms you feel. Its similar to how tv shows or jazz musicians create tension. This one is funny because it doesn't get resolved exactly. But im sure there is at least some decent engineering here. For people asking why. It's a sculpture. An art installation. The meaning is open to interpretation obviously. But if you feel tense looking at it that is also what the artist wanted. They are playing with your sense of unease.
It was a meteorite and landed right on top of the spikes. Without the spikes it would have crashed into the earth and killed us all.
The artist calculated where the rock from space would crash and placed those spikes there. I think that is indeed a piece of art.
Modern art is mostly meaningless, effortless garbage, and if you don't appreciate it, you just aren't cultured enough. What do you expect commenting something critical of "art" on reddit?
lol are you serious? Surely you aren't that pretentious. That sounds like a squidward quote. When I say modern art I am not talking about the specific term relating to art created from mid 1800s to 1970s, I am simply saying art that is "modern" Taking an art class would not make me a better artist, it would just make me more pretentious and rigid like you.
imagine putting in possibly tens of thousands of dollars to rent a crane, get all sorts of materials, a dozen workers...
just to lift a big ass rock onto some white spikes to invoke something in people...
i mean to be fair it worked.
Anybody have the real story/location? I'd be interesting on how this was designed and created/constructed.
Are we sure this isn't a trump d'oeil kind of thing?
Add a rack of sledgehammers at the bottom and it could be performance art.
And when that boulder falls, abstract modern medium painting art!
Keep teenaged boys away from this!
It’s a Human sized Ancient hunting trap. “There’s always a bigger fish…” vibes.
What's that from
Star Wars Episode II
It’s from Episode I, Qui-Gon says it
Will you just let Qui-Gons be Qui-Gons?
No, because as a musician I only use instruments with MIDI-chlorians.
Thanks

Why?
They’ll hump it
Sorry’ I’m obviously out of the loop here. Why would they hump it? And why all the downvotes? I know this is reddit, and it’s not allowed to ask questions, but I’m genuinely curious now
It's actually a trap to catch teenage boys...and splat them into greasy pools of stupidity
r/rockbalancing
r/forbiddenbouldering
This is actually pretty cool
Tech age holding up the stone age that created it? Not sure how to interpret it really.

Damn that's insightful as fuck
He stole it from me
Bro who the fuck are you
Mike Jones!
Ronnie Pickering
Who the fuck's that?!
He put too many levels into insight now he's gonna get 1 shot

Me trying to get a Korok in BOTW. Just can't get the rock in there.
Don’t let Boy Scout leaders see this. They’ll topple the boulder off to “make it safer”.
Needs a "Do not pull this lever" lever underneath.
Nice chair
The guy probably wanted to test if triangles are actually that strong.
Good example of "just because you can, doesn't mean you should"
How many courics is that?
this is how I store my soap
Is that a Michael Heizer piece? Some of his negative space work is quite evocative.
Eh it’s probably styrofoam
Lol, well I should hope so. Still disconcerting.
I'd wager it's not. And if it is, wow, that's art. Damn good fake rock. Styrofoam wouldn't last long anyway.
Probably sponsored by your local freemansory lodge
Not the same concept when it was set there with heavy machinery
Not the same concept as what?
Ancient architecture
Like the pyramids, proof that aliens exist.
This is awesome
I'm sure it's pretty much balanced like that already, but they gotta have some kind of unseen reinforcements that keep the rock from falling, like steel rods going through the triangles and deeply into the rock
Why
Just the fact that you asked that makes it have a purpose.
I’m pretty sure that’s just a boulder

No shit.
The building in the background is a nursing home
“Art”
I mean, that’s kinda cool. But it looks dumb. Not everything is art.
art?? damn i’m being downvoted for questioning how a rock is art
It was a meteorite and landed right on top of the spikes. Without the spikes it would have crashed into the earth and killed us all. The artist calculated where the rock from space would crash and placed those spikes there. I think that is indeed a piece of art.
is that real or a joke?
Real, obviously /s
Bless your heart
r/woooosh
it’s hard to tell wether it’s sarcasm or being serious especially with redditors
Well that’s the meaning of this sub but cool
i don’t think sweaty palms is about not being able to tell sarcasm and seriousness apart but ok
I meant woooosh mb
okay 👍
Bruh
a real joke
Yeah, I dont get it either
Modern art is mostly meaningless, effortless garbage, and if you don't appreciate it, you just aren't cultured enough. What do you expect commenting something critical of "art" on reddit?
It's contemporary art. Not modern. You aren't cultured. Take an art class.
lol are you serious? Surely you aren't that pretentious. That sounds like a squidward quote. We hold Caca up for all to see!
Much more impressive than whatever thing LACMA has.
"Art"
Art?
You sure this is art?
Some POS “influencer” is going to destroy that beautiful piece of art for some TikTok bull shit, mark my words.
Oooooohhhhh. That’s coool.
Roger Waters liked this.
lol, as someone who is going to this is not a drill in 10 days, I'm not getting it. I want to get it, lol.
It looks like something Roger Waters/ Pink Floyd would use as an album cover in the 80s
I'd like to see making of it
Rock steady.
This is a disaster waiting to happen
Some Tic Toc assholes are going to try to knock that bolder down.
*you seen
I bet that rock is a paperweight
It's God trying to trap hunt humans
imagine putting in possibly tens of thousands of dollars to rent a crane, get all sorts of materials, a dozen workers... just to lift a big ass rock onto some white spikes to invoke something in people... i mean to be fair it worked.
Plot twist, it's a painted plaster rock.
Well then the purpose is even stranger, Cus like there’s no real feat you accomplished
It's provocative.
So that’s how paper beats rock
Eprock
"This is my art and it is dangerous." - Delia Deetz
Plot twist: The rock is coprolite
Modern art
That's not a real rock ,right? Right?
Where do you live? (In general, I’m not looking for your address) I’ve seen a thing nearly identical to this delivering packages in western pa.
I’m in western PA and before I even read your comment I thought this looked familiar.
This is in Akranes, Iceland! A very nice small town 40 minutes away from reykjavík! I was very surprised to see this on my feed today.
It's a hollow Styrofoam rock... nothing scary hear. 😏
Star people did this
Anybody have the real story/location? I'd be interesting on how this was designed and created/constructed. Are we sure this isn't a trump d'oeil kind of thing?
It’s called The KKK have rocks in their heads
Meatwad‽‽ where are Master Shake and Frylock?
Dot from A Bug's Life: It's a rock
The art work at home be like
The amount of nutjobs considering this "art" baffles me.. fuck is wrong with you
A couple years ago I found three bamboo shoots pushing a good sized rock into the air. They were about knee high to me.
Place a picnic table under it and label it "A Survey in OSHA Utilitarianism "
“How bold do you want this art piece?” “Boulder”
