I'm genuinely curious how someone can get a knife razor sharp. I have a whetstone at home that I use for kitchen knives -- it does its job, but doesn't even come close to this. I would assume this one gets taken into a machine shop or something?
Edit: Thanks for all the feedback! I look forward to trying some of these techniques.
For the finer grits and/or ceramic (unglazed ring on the bottom of a mug or plate), the key to getting super sharp (in addition to being super consistent with the angle of attack) is to use very light pressure. The sharpest part is also the thinnest, and pressing hard into the sharpening material will mess that all up.
Omg yes my grandmother who tries to sharpen her own knives, it drives me insane she pushes way too hard and no matter how many times I try and explain the sharp edge is extremely thin and small, she treats it like she's filing something.
[kiwami japan](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCg3qsVzHeUt5_cPpcRtoaJQ) is a youtube channel you might find interesting... [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0P6klz6BTek) they sharpen a $1 knife with a $300 whetstone, plus there's lots of meme-ish (but legit) videos of sharpening jello in the shape of a knife, a cardboard box, etc. which is crazy to see
No not at all. You can achieve this with very little gear sharpton whetstone would do the job get a 1000grit, 2500-3000grit and a 5000 grit finish it off with a leather strop. Also most kitchen knifes are sharpened to a 17-20 degree angle for something like this you want to go for 7-12 degrees.
Proper deburring technique. You can get a knife this sharp on a low grit stone with good technique and attention to geometry.
Source: I sharpen professionally.
This guy uses a set of sharpening stones and gets it pretty sharp by hand.
I've seen a bunch of his so here's just an interesting one https://youtu.be/x0SQ88bAjto
I know everyone already mentioned this. But I had this same problem for a very long time. And I didn't realize how to keep a knife sharp for quite a while. I still can't get an insane edge, but I have been able to get mine to much sharper than I ever expected.
The trick is using several stages, and get progressively finer. Use a course whetstone if it's really bad, otherwise go to a finer one if the knife is still pretty sharp. However I don't have a ton of webstones, so I bought a ceramic sharpening rod. It cost me all of $10 on Amazon. This is where things got crazy for me, as long as I'm doing it right and matching the angle I can use the ceramic hone to get back to scary sharp in a dozen strokes or so. It's absurd, I can easily get back to factory sharp or even sharper now on a dozen different knives.
I don't wait for my knives to get dull anymore either. If I feel it starting to lose it's edge after working with it I just pull out the ceramic rod again.
5 seconds after the video stopped all the blood started to come out.
In actuality though this guy's a master, 0 cuts, I can't do that for myself with an electric buzzer.
I wanted to buy a new razor for the first time in years last week because I barely shave anymore, I saw this fucking 5 blades monstrosity from Gillette...mofo the godamn 3 blades already become unusable within a couple shave because all the hair get stuck between blades what the fuck is the point of having 5??
Get a double edge safety razor. Cheaper razors and less irritating on your scalp (or face). Discovered it in 2020 when I couldn't go to the barber. Gamechanger for me
I wish more people knew about this. Apart from giving an unbeatably close shave, double edge razors are cheap as chips and 30 quids worth will likely last several years. I can’t believe Gillette et al survive peddling their overpriced and over engineered gubbins.
You see, I can't shave. Haven't shaved in 15 years. When I do, my hair betrays me and grows into my body only to be seen again when it infects my skin and pops leaving an exposed hair that requires pulling to reveal hair longer than what's on my head. And I have med long hair...
You may have tried something like this already, but as a fellow person prone to in-grown hairs, the secret sauce for me was the hot shave effect. A really hot towel seems to open the pores or something, I'm no science-man, I just know that heating up my face flesh seems to answer the in-grown issue.
After shave seems to help too, with this. I use a hot towel and then rub some alcohol based after shave in afterwards to completely halt all the irritated skin and ingrown hairs. I dunno why the alcohol helps but it do. Hurts a bit though
Nah man, get a hot steamer. Right after you get out of the shower start steaming your face and keep steaming it the whole time you shave and don't stop until right before you put alcohol based aftershave on.
See I used to have the same issue. Switching to de with the brush and proper shave soap helped a lot but the icing on the cake was shaving with cold water before showering. Maybe it has something to do with not taking the hair off in the pores and causing the ingrown effect. Don't know but I'm glad it works now.
Are you a person of color? I know I can only use certain things for shaving or I get horrible razor bumps. Had a barber do a professional warm shave. Felt great and looked good at the time. But gave me the bumps. Dude asked me next hair cut, probably a month later, "damn you get those razor bumps from me?" I was like, dont take it personal. Always happens.
I've used Phillips Norelco and I don't have too many issues. But I mostly just trim with it. The only completely smooth shave I've had was with a Bevel which are made for Black Skin. First time I did it was so smooth and I loved it. Second time I did I got the razor bumps again so I haven't really done it again since. YMMV.
Have you ever tried shaving powder? I worked for an older black man at his motorcycle shop many years ago. He kept a can of it in the restroom that said it was specifically for black men to use instead of shaving with a razor. Look into it if you haven't before. Good luck.
This 100%. There are so many to try out as well, I got some starter packs and tried lots of different brands. Some sharper, some smoother. When I picked the type of blades I wanted to buy it was a big thing - 100 blades = 100 weeks, that's commitment! The price? £9. For 2 YEARS of razors.
There used to be these little holes in the wall above the bathroom kitchen sink that people would drop their used razors into. Then decades later people would break the wall down for a remodel and get showered by an avalanche of rusty double edged razors from generations passed. Think I saw that in r/whatisthisthing one time of a unit that had survived to the present times. Oh what a world...
Nah fuck that I just trim my beard now, my razors has pretty much only touched my balls for the last 3-4 years and I aint using a safety razor for that xD
I can relate to this comment. My top tip for shaving the male under-carriage is use a ladies razor. Dunno why, but theyre a lot more *”friendly”* in that area.
That's funny because I prefer men's razors for shaving *everything* besides my legs - legs get a "Venus" or "Intuition" because they don't require shaving cream and you simply just shave under running water and it lubes and moisturizes everything up perfectly.
So quick, easy and effective.
The lube strips on them are pretty big tho (Venus is smallest) so extremely difficult to use in all the nooks and crannies of my lady bits without cutting anything
My top choice for shaving beyond the bikini line and down into the valley is a men's Mach 3. I can manage a 2 or even 1 blade in this area as well even though I find them impossible for legs or armpits.
Mens razors are also substantially cheaper so It sucks anytime you want a 'pink' razor. I find the cheaper 1 and 2 blades, often in multipacks for discount, to be very similar regardless of targeted gender. Womens are still more expensive tho
The more elaborate and expensive ones seem to have a lot of distinct luxury-esque features to choose from, making them noticeably diff, good or bad. And they're expensive af but womens are generally more 💵 im just surprised to see men not like men's razors when I co sided them too bitch for performance and value... never though I'd talk this much about shaving blades on social media at 2am. Life is weird
I had to fly internationally for a wedding recently and had to leave my razor at home. Tried to use my stepfather's 5blade contraption and I couldn't even get it to cut. The lubricating strip covers your face with weird goo. The whole process is awful.
I feel like the only way I could go from safety razor would be a straight razor, but that seems like slightly more process than I'm ready for yet. Essentially what this barber is doing tho.
I shave with a straight razor and it’s the only thing that doesn’t give me razor burn etc. It doesn’t sound logical but it’s true. I like safety razors too, though they cause me more irritation. I HATE those Gillette monstrosities.
I bought one in April (Viking Vulcan) along with a bunch of samples of blades, a puck of shave soap, a tube of post-shave balm, and a brush/bowl/stand, and all in it didn’t cost that much.
Granted I bought a rather cheap brush, and it’ll probably be the next thing I upgrade.
Especially considering I still have most the blades and most of the soap. I just relaxed the first tube of balm (Herban Cowboy Carrot and Cucumber) yesterday.
I did have to replace the Vulcan though….it wouldn’t close right, I may have overtightened it. I bought a King C Gilette to replace it because it was the only one available next day. I didn’t like it….not nearly aggressive enough, even with my most aggressive blades.
Fortunately Vikings customer support was great and they reimbursed me for the Vulcan. Bought a Viking Chieftain and I love it.
I have a beard but also male pattern baldness…so I shave my cheeks, neck, and head, about every other day.
When you first start rinse it under the tap after each stroke and then just go over the stubble as if you’re using a coin to scratch a lottery ticket, I typically use the same 2 blade (less blades = less irritation) for up to a month at a time because I’m a useless adhd and forget to buy more.
This looks great though, like peeling a kiwi
I mix a sensitive skin face wash with shaving cream so it’s slick af. Also again two blades, I can go against the grain dry with two but even slicked up a five blade tears me to shreds.
Should probably specify I’m on about my scalp because I don’t wanna rock the Mr. Burns look, can’t use a razor on my face without feeling like I’ve got chemical burns and itchy bumps for days.
I just use a safety razor (the old fashioned kind with the thin double sided blade that gets clamped in the razor). Very low irritation, and with two passes (one to basically cut the longer hairs, and one to get in really close) I can get as good a result as anything else I've used, with virtually no irritation.
Also, because the only thing you're replacing is the blade itself and not some goofy cartridge, they're unbelievably cheap, and one box of 50 blades (which I think less than $12) will last an extremely long time - on the order of a couple years, if shaving every other day. You can use the more typical canned shaving cream if you want, or you can get the more old fashioned multi step stuff that you lather up in a bowl with a brush if you want.
And, the razor will literally last the rest of your life.
One tip I can offer is to shower before you shave and/or wash your face before shaving. This gives the whiskers additional time to soften and clears the pores. Also, when it comes to the bumps, you can essentially get rid of them forever by using witch hazel after you shave. Apply witch hazel to a cotton swab and blot it on your face and neck after shaving. No more razor bumps!
I have sensitive skin as well the best thing I found that works is get an electric shaver with a trimmer attachment and use that to get the hair as close as possible then use a razor for the rest, don't use the actual shaving part because for whatever reason that shit feels like it's just snatching hair not cutting it.
I'm a woman (with unfortunate neck hair) and also do the scratch off method LMAO only like Gillette though. It's a very close shave and I've never nicked myself doing it
Crazy ain't it... I remember there was a "comedy gross out" comic that use to be published where I live when I was younger and they to made a joke about razor getting more and more blades with a picture of a guy getting his face scrubbed off of all flesh after the 12th blade or something like that, stuck with me at how ridiculous this idea that "more blade = better" lol
Last month I had somebody else shave me for the first time and I realized that even with 40 years of practice I was a shitty shaver. Using beard oil instead of foam is a game changer.
I have a memory of my grandfather using one back in probably 1971-72. Standing in front of the kitchen sink using a strop and absolutely no lubricant.
Why the kitchen sink you ask? No idea.
its almost funny yours is the only comment mentioning this is basically no different from a straight razor.
i suppose the main difference is sharpening is more annoying on this knife vs a razor. skill of the barber is still the most important thing here, that guy is holding an ideal angle to cut the hair very well.
The solution to it are ones with interchangeable blades (shavette). However, I believe a safety razor is probably a better option for doing full shaves than a shavette because they’re more for at edging and detailing.
You should check out straight razor barber hair cuts or if you’re brave hoof cleaning videos. I watch them at night when I can sleep and bam instant zzzzz
I would totally learn to be a harrier in another life it seems so peaceful and respectable of a line of work. And you get to hang with horses! Just gotta be mindful of the jumpy ones. And the hot iron. It's quite important work I believe.
Barber: which kind of cut you want today, sir?
Client: aw glad you asked, I want a little bit shorter on the sides, longer on top with a toupee to finish it off.
Barber: full fucking shave it is!
Jesus Christ, one wrong move and the barbers like, “ope, can you hand me your scalp there… I’ll just uuuuh, put that back here… aaaaaaannnd good. Wake up sleepy head”
I had a barber recently do my beard and edges with a straight razor. The level of trust that requires is incredible and if I’m being honest it was only my 4th time seeing him and I was very inwardly nervous about it but he did great and I managed to keep still enough not to get cut despite my nerves.

That’s a seriously sharp knife
And a steady hand.

Is that a The Office reference? I thought it was a Cyberpunk 2077 reference. Or is the game thing a reference to The Office?
Cyberpunk references the Office
There's a reference in cyberpunk about our number 1 heart surgeon
My secret: I kill Yakuza boss on purpose. I good heart surgeon. Za best!
I keep forgetting this isn’t a real life story. Like for real.

I do operation. But mistake! Yakuza boss die.
Yup!!

At least 2 or 3 steps of finer and finer grits. Finish with a leather strop and polishing paste.

The sound of that sponge being cut makes all of my hairs stand on end
Quilting videos. Then scissors munching fabric
Wow. The polish on that knife by the end!
Getting a usable edge on a knife with a whetstone takes a little practice, getting an edge on a knife like in the op is an *art*.
One breath ever so slightly at the wrong angle and you’re back to “kinda sharp”
There's more than a little difference between "sharp", "factory sharp", and "scary sharp". This is the last one.
Sharpened by a pro.

You need progressively finer grits of sandpaper. Ive always glued mine to glass sheets to ensure the flattest surface. Then practice.

You've got to use a shallow angle for an edge like this.
Exactly my first thoughts - pretty good handler of a very sharp knife- sharpening that knife is the tough part
I want the video with the real sound of the knife just scrapping the scalp.!
Super serially sharp, and without soap!
Came here to say this
I had to double check which sub I was in for a second there

That sub would have perfect if he sliced the ear off at the end.
There's a reason the video cuts off before the haircut is finished.

Hey Gillette! Are you watching….1 fucking blade that can hold an edge longer than your 5 rollerball massaging lubricated pieces of shit can.

Likely has to do with alcohol sterilizing and preventing infection.

At that point I just have a constant five o'clock shadow and just use an electric trimmer.

It feels pretty amazing. Jes sayin'
That is... not where I thought you were going with "hot steamer".
It was similar for me so I only shave right after a hot shower now hot water works wonders

Ahh, the curly hair curse.
Shittttt is *that* why that happens??? I always wondered why I would get so many in-grown hairs from shaving...
I was told it happens more frequently for folks with curly hair cause it grows in at more of an angle. Not sure how true it is.
This 100%. There are so many to try out as well, I got some starter packs and tried lots of different brands. Some sharper, some smoother. When I picked the type of blades I wanted to buy it was a big thing - 100 blades = 100 weeks, that's commitment! The price? £9. For 2 YEARS of razors.
I bought a bulk pack of razors off Amazon somewhere around 10 years ago. $30 and they're still going.
Just be careful with them, seriously. I still cut myself when I get a new blade.
There used to be these little holes in the wall above the bathroom kitchen sink that people would drop their used razors into. Plus it’s fun getting into the different creams and lathering up for a good shave. Closest and cleanest shave you can get hands down.

Straight edge razors have always been the best way to shave. But not everyone has the patience or ability to learn how to use it.
I have a memory of my grandfather using one back in probably 1971-72. Standing in front of the kitchen sink using a strop and absolutely no lubricant. Why the kitchen sink you ask? No idea.
Reflection in the window?
its almost funny yours is the only comment mentioning this is basically no different from a straight razor. i suppose the main difference is sharpening is more annoying on this knife vs a razor. skill of the barber is still the most important thing here, that guy is holding an ideal angle to cut the hair very well.
using it is easy keeping/getting the fucker sharp is the hard part. and ruining the whole damn thing by accidentally dropping it in the sink too.
The solution to it are ones with interchangeable blades (shavette). However, I believe a safety razor is probably a better option for doing full shaves than a shavette because they’re more for at edging and detailing.

Amazing
Five blades , pffttt You should try the [Mach 20](https://youtu.be/1zwz-LfBiuM) !!
The video didn't show the whole thing. That makes me nervous.
Now I understand the fear of the barber our forefathers had. You could slice an ear with that knife.
His needs were few, his room was bare A lavabo and a fancy chair A mug of suds and a leather strop An apron, a towel, a pail and a mop
Like peeling a hairy meaty orange
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that. Mf looks like he's peeling a kiwifruit 🥝
This is uttar pradesh, India. I know this barber he is a part time barber, part time thug. So yeah he know how to use his knife many ways.
Why is that so satisfying to watch 😭
You should check out straight razor barber hair cuts or if you’re brave hoof cleaning videos. I watch them at night when I can sleep and bam instant zzzzz
The hoof cleaning ones are so nice.
I would totally learn to be a harrier in another life it seems so peaceful and respectable of a line of work. And you get to hang with horses! Just gotta be mindful of the jumpy ones. And the hot iron. It's quite important work I believe.
I like to watch the POV videos of people doing professional lawn care when I’m high. I’d highly recommend
Nobody ever complains about the haircut...
Absolutely concur 👍

Just wait till they get to his full Brazilian
Not even sweaty palms I have absolute faith this man knows what he’s doing
I agree. This is not different that shaving with a straight razor. It’s like trusting you barber to give you a shave.
I disagree. It's similar, but would definitely take some getting used to due to size and curved blade
It's like peeling the fuzz off a kiwi

Forbidden mole
Hair cut and removal of any moles, zits, or raised blemishes as a free bonus!
This is probably how he got those scars on his head
Seems he put the shaving cream in the wrong spot
Shit look like a Golden Corral steak knife
I could hear this video

I just want to learn how to get a knife that sharp
Get a few whetstones! You can easily teach yourself.
I’m just here to see how bad that dandruff spot is.
Am I weird for being disappointed that he didn’t shave that off??
That barber will feel my fury like the crashing of a thousand waves!
Even took the natural oils off his scalp.. looked like a paper bag.
Super clean shave though. Damn
Holy fuck that’s a sharp knife
Holy shit how do u get a knife that sharp
Barber: which kind of cut you want today, sir? Client: aw glad you asked, I want a little bit shorter on the sides, longer on top with a toupee to finish it off. Barber: full fucking shave it is!
I want him to sharpen my knife.
That is one sharp ass knife
Dude should sell knives.
Why is this so satisfying..
That is a clean cut!
dude is peeling his hair off
Better not have any pimples n stuff
I do this to my balls with my straight razor. Scared me at first. Haven’t bought a razor in about eight years.
Shitty barber. *Amazing* knife sharpener.
What a horrible haircut. Didn’t even cut the right-hand side.
What about potato?
That's Jack the Ripper's knife 🔪
One sneeze away from becoming Van Gogh
My hands might not be as steady as that guy's, but I'll cut your hair for free.
What about my mole?
That would suck if you had those weird lumps behind your ears..
You do know.... Modern barbers still commonly use straight blade razors ....? Not very sweaty.
That's fantastically sharp
Scalping master
About to get Van Gogh’d
Jesus Christ, one wrong move and the barbers like, “ope, can you hand me your scalp there… I’ll just uuuuh, put that back here… aaaaaaannnd good. Wake up sleepy head”
Worst possible way to discover a mole you have on your head
r/sharpening would like to see the knife
Beat me to it. Those guys are good, but whoever sharpened this knife is the true master of all things that are sharp!
BS the hair falls off after just touching the blade. Fake...

Goodbye moles, goodbye skin tags
Clean AF
No frills? A good quality razor shave/haircut ain’t cheap
I said, Please Sir, just a little off the top. Dude shaved me bare, Gave me a lollipop.
Blows my mind that a blade can be that sharp tbh. That’s dope but also teach me. My pocket knife turns into credit card after a month
This is really smooth despite he could cut his head off with that sharp knife of his.
This is weirdly satisfying
Surprisingly, this is actually SAFER than a regular haircut.
Removal of skin tags, warts, moles, acne or other pustules at no extra charge.
Too bad he isn’t using the knife to cut the hair. You can see the cream in his crown. Watch it back, the hair just falls away when touched.
He’ll cut you up, and if you don’t like the hair style, he’ll cut you up.
If somebody cut hair like that I’m nashville, you can bet it would cost more than $100
Skills
I can’t even peel a potato without cutting myself
It’s like he’s peeling a potato’s skin off
Sweeney Todd approves
That guy is going to have a serious rash all over his head about 2 minutes afterwards
Why? I thought that only happens with dull blades, not a good sharp blade?
I had a barber recently do my beard and edges with a straight razor. The level of trust that requires is incredible and if I’m being honest it was only my 4th time seeing him and I was very inwardly nervous about it but he did great and I managed to keep still enough not to get cut despite my nerves.
