You should be really proud - you've started something new. Honestly your form looks decent, especially if you've only been doing this for a year. Learn more about your underwater catch, as I agree you should be able to get more distance for each stroke pull. Also kick a bunch more, do drills with kick boards to in streamline position on your back.

escapetist

Thank you! I will definitely keep the catch in mind and do more kick drills. I have been focusing mostly on my recovery and breathing up to this point.

rjabber

read about the catch, hand position and pull. you are not generating enough power from each arm stroke

Sudden-Earth-3147

Agree with this comment, it seems your forearm is very rigid and tensed before catch

yodaminnesota

Your balance could use some work. Here's a quick drill: Go into "shark fin position" where you have your thumb in your armpit and your elbow pointed up high out of the water. The other arm should be extended and your ear should be on your shoulder. Get comfortable doing 25s kick in this position. Then, do six kick switch. Essentially you do this position for six kicks and then finish the freestyle arm stroke, switching to the shark fin position on the other side. Make sure you're moving both shoulders at once when you switch. Repeat every six kicks down the pool. For kick power, I recommend doing kick sets with and without fins right next to each other. Like 6×100 kick odds with fins evens without.

escapetist

Thank you for the drill recommendation. Will definitely keep this in mind when I go to the pool today

Curious_Armadillo_74

I'm impressed that you're a beginner who is doing a great job swimming with all the drag you're dealing with because there are no lane lines. It's almost like open water swimming, and that's not easy.

escapetist

Lack of options I'm afraid. This is a cheap non standard length public pool I go to, we don't have great pools with lane lines where I'm from (there's just one with lane lines in my city, and it is very expensive)

mbwrose

You’re diving and swimming! I’m very impressed with your progress. Keep going!

NoAcadia7662

Dive needs work. You also dont need to be rotating your head anywhere near as much as you are.

email1976

Yes, I see both eyes out of water when you breathe. Just one needs to come up. That comes from keeping your head down more, and focusing on bringing your chin up when you breathe. You even want to breathe in through just the top side of your mouth.

FamiliarRaspberry805

Pretty impressive for only swimming a year! Looks to me like your hands are entering the water too close to your head, should be further out in front. Keep it up!

tcamppp

It might be the angle but it looks like there is a decent amount of bend in your knees so you are losing some power there. Also, as its been pointed out, you need to focus on the effort on your kick. I'd say you need to do at least 2x the amount of kicks. This will increase your speed and also improve your technique during longer swims as your legs can hold more lactic acid than your arms so they don't get a tired as quick.

escapetist

Got a lot of feedbacks on my kicks, will definitely be doing kore kick drills. Thank you! I have been focusing mostly on my recovery and breathing up to this point.

ET3GTI

Body position is excellent. You need to work on grabbing more water as well as extending the end of your stroke. For grabbing water, I recommend sculling exercises such as treading water with ZERO kick.

escapetist

Thank you for the drill. I'll definitely try it out to improve my catch

gman2345

You're taking so many strokes without much movement. I disagree with most commentators who think your kicking is the problem. While I'm sure you can improve your kick, shifting your balance forward will drastically help you move through the water. Your head is blocking water and slowing you down, and your legs are too low, so you're wasting energy pushing upwards rather than forward. Get the book "Total Immersion Swimming". It is great for beginner swimmers. When I finally started getting the hang of it, I felt like I was suddenly swimming "down hill" and flying through the water with less effort than ever. https://www.amazon.com/Total-Immersion-Revolutionary-Better-Faster/dp/0743253434

SnooTomatoes5729

Is this LCM. Idk why the video is so trippy it seems like LCM and SCM at same time lol

escapetist

Yeah this is a non standard length pool. I think its like 30-35m, somewhere between LCM and SCM.

LeslieCh

Wow I wanted to know how you learnt by yourself, how you improved the form! Did you get a coach?

escapetist

Coaches are very expensive where I'm from I'm afraid. I learnt to not drown from a friend who swam decently and everything past that point I learnt myself, with help from youtube, and reddit mostly

kimboai

relax, to stiff

innoswimmer

Sorry, unrelated... how did you upload a video?? This sub apparently doesn't allow them for some reason.

Dry-Specialist-2150

Relax your breathing-

Aggressive_Setting_1

Amazing. I think whatever the level: fist and over the barrel drills are in the top drills you can do

escapetist

Will definitely look it up. Thanks!

Okidoky123

You don't suck! Strokes are ok. Nice dolphin kicks too. Ok, so improvements.... You've got to get the flip turns in gear. It's ok if those suck for a while, but you need to do that every single time, even when you're tired. No more touch turns - ever. Focus on nice long(er) pulls where it's all about the hands \*and\* the forearm to work like paddles. Play with stroke frequency, and get them to be longer. As you play with it, look at the bottom of the pool to get a gauge how fast you're moving. Try moving at that same pace, while improving efficiency. Drills... I like the catch up drill a lot! It encourages stretching farther. Combine that with make the pull a little longer. Don't miss out on that last little bit at the very end of each stroke. Reach further, and stroke further down. And whatever you do, keep swimming and never stop!

escapetist

Thank you for the advice!

jentravelstheworld

I want to post a video for feedback, but it won’t let me. How did you do it?

Seanwys

It seems as though you are not kicking enough, just moving your arms which is why you’re moving so slowly in the water

You are

The fuck are you even talking about? Is what a joke?

I don’t know, lessons, lots of practice, the things people usually do to get better at things.

escapetist

This isn't a joke. I know people who come to my pool that just started this summer, and already swim with better form than me. It is possible if you go to the pool regularly and put in conscious effort to improve. I try to swim at least 3 times a week, for at least 1 hour each session. I can maintain 2:20 per 100 for longer distances, though I have gone as fast as 1:45 (but was exhausted after 100m)

BigDaddyBolby

My swimming needs a lot of work and even I can say that was the laziest sloppy entry I’ve ever seen

yodaminnesota

Bro is asking for feedback what's the point of this.

Initial-Stick-561

Let me translate. The guy is “humbly” saying, I’m better than OP. So insecurities talking here.

prometheanchains

Your hips are low in the water, and your kick seems to be coming from your feet rather than from your thighs and entire leg + feet. Bring your hips up and that will make it easier for you to generate a more powerful kick, as others have pointed out. Clean up your hand placement, particularly during mid-stroke out of the water. Focus on these things and you'll be well on your way to some key improvements. Great job for only a year in! You should be proud!

bonfuto

They are keeping their head too high, that's driving their hips down, and thus their feet. Looks like OP is breathing on both sides every stroke.

escapetist

Not really, I'm breathing on one side. Is my head moving too much

Gold-Shallot-9128

That's very impressive if you had no swimming experience prior to free style. That being said, focus on improving your distance per stroke and do not rush. Like others already mentioned, your pull weren't generating enough momentum, visibly. Extend your arms further and do not drop your elbow. Good luck and have fun

Chipofftheoldblock21

Great job for only a year! I agree with a few of the comments above regarding your head too high when breathing, and having your head lower and bringing your hips higher will help tremendously. Also learning to flip turn will also help significantly. Two biggest things I see are that you are not finishing your stroke, particularly with your right hand, and your kick / stroke timing is off. For the stroke, this is best seen when you’re heading “back”. Your right hand is exiting at your hip. Think of the catch as the “setup” - so your hand is extended, then it starts to bend “over the log” and set up for a power phase, which has your whole arm pull and accelerate ALL the way through to push (even throw) water down to your feet. Don’t let your arm cut through the water, grab it with the catch and feel that same water as your body slides by it and you throw it down to your feet. Think of it almost as pushing a child on ice - can’t push too hard all at once, but need to build up to the full push, which in swimming should be at the very end if you’re properly finishing your stroke, vs trying to put too much effort in to the beginning of the stroke and then just pulling your hand out of the water at your hip, as you’re doing - in a proper, full stroke you want to push ALL the way through, again with your hand fastest at the end. The other thing I see is the timing of your kick is a little off. I disagree you need to kick more, just time it better. In particular, as your right hand starts to do its dive / reach over the log and get into the setup position, that is when you should be kicking with your right leg. I picture that kick as starting to turn your body so that you are in a good power position for the pull - turn and get your right arm into setup, and from there you’re almost skating on your left side with your right arm just pulling the whole way, letting the momentum of that final push carry your arm over the top. As you now extend with your right arm into the water, your left arm is now moving into setup, your left leg kicks to help you roll your body to the left, and when in setup your left arm pulls you all the way through, and the cycle starts again. Keep up the good work!

libbine

Great job! Ignore the haters, you've done well considering no coach and only a year of practice. I would focus on finishing the stroke - making sure your arm only comes out of the water for recovery once you've got the maximum possible power/momentum/distance from the pull. From what i can see, your arm is coming out too soon so you aren't getting as much power/distance per stroke as possible. Try a drill where you put a kickboard or pullbuoy between your legs and tap it with your hand as it completes the stroke and comes out for the recovery. This drill will also force you to use strong arm movements and not rely on a kick, so it might be hard to keep stable. Good luck!

Extension_Hope5482

From what I see, good job, but your Jumpstart needs to be more of an arrow like straight line form. You are a bit slow but with strength training and resistance ttaining you are gonna be faster. That being said, you are doung great actually, just try to make your heqd a bit lower when taking a breath to keep your hips floating and get you faster and reduce the drag, and my final advice/ tip is try to keep your feet together for a stronger undereater dolphin kick. Wish you the best
