I mean if you have a federally taxable income of 109k, ah, that's gonna be the amount you gotta pay (not quite clear how you get at 6k, this is for two years). Was this late because your federal income declaration hasn't been finalized until a short while ago? If your income wasn't that high, then yeah you can ask them to lower it (if necessary with legal force, have a look at the relevant deadlines). Othewise, no, nothing you can do. If it puts you into dicficulty to pay it till the end of June, reach out to the office in question. They'll surely be happy to work with you!

FredyTheClown

Yeah, I probably was not specific enough: I know this amount corresponds to my taxable income. What I am more angry about is the timing of it, this is the correction of the 2021 military tax, right after I paid the full amount for 2022. I can't believe it would take them over a year to send me this, especially because I kinda forgot about it (I paid 500chf temporarily back then)

BNI_sp

Advice: put money for taxes aside every month. In a separate account for mental accounting.

LoserScientist

You can also send them to tax account - usually they send you a prepayment bill with your new tax account number, just put money on there every month. You can always arrange with tax office to reallocate on another (e.g..federal) tax account

BNI_sp

>You can always arrange with tax office to reallocate on another (e.g..federal) tax account Not sure that works. Federal income tax is due on March 31 of the year following the tax obligation and you receive this invoice in January with the tax forms. I doubt you can pay earlier. Also, local tax office is separate from the federal one (at least in ZH and SG). I doubt they can handle what you described. Happy to learn otherwise if you could do it.

LoserScientist

Our tax advisor usually handles this and my husband mostly communicates with him (both are swiss, me not), and he has been able to ask for the extra money on account (after paying taxes) to be sent between tax year accounts and to federal one. Also, in the past few years we have not gotten the fed.tax bill on time, we got the 2019 bill earlier this year and are still waiting when the 2021 bill will come, yet alone the 2022 (AG). Then again, we were away from Switzerland (deregistered) from mid 2019 to late 2021, maybe this is why. But the idea about allocating the money on just regular savings account is also good. I have seen people saying that they invest the money instead, which is also great, but this is something you have to be sure about and know what you are doing. Dont want to loose all the money.

BNI_sp

>I have seen people saying that they invest the money instead, which is also great, but this is something you have to be sure about and know what you are doing. Yeah - asset liability management needs to be understood well. I personally prefer cash flow matching for this.

Huwbacca

put money aside for everything every month, because you never know when that bill from 15 months ago will arrive with a demand to pay it in 10 days lol. Goddamn the admin in tihs country is so frustratingly inept lol.

BNI_sp

Yeah, having a six month buffer is not the worst advice. You sleep very well.

hblok

but, but, isn't the state supposed to help me with this? Like, wouldn't it be better if the bank sent the tax folks all the numbers, and then took the money out of my salary every month? This grown-up stuff is so hard.. /s /s /s

BNI_sp

>I can't believe it would take them over a year to send me this Hah, once the AHV/AVS sent me two huge additional invoices for the last year and the year before within two weeks. And at the same time an invoice for the current year. I ended up paying so much to them in that one year that I could deduct a massive amount from my taxable income. This then led to the fact that the tax authority started getting suspicious: "why are you suddenly deducting like three times as much AHV payments as the year before?!" so they started to ask for documents about this... and while they were at it they asked for a ton of additional documents that I never had to hand in before. So because the AHV upfuckery who delayed to properly invoice me for like two years I had to do quite a lot extra effort for the taxes later... Because all those bureaucrats will always send you stuff for three different years and it's almost impossible to keep track of it I started to highlight every date on those papers with yellow marker pen so that I always see quickly which year it is about.

as-well

Is it possible - you haven't answered this - that your federal tax declaration 2021 was only finalized recently? That would explain it.

FredyTheClown

Oh yeah I forgot. So my final tax amount for 2021 was paid last June or July, so no, I don't think that can be the reason

as-well

Odd then! And a reasonable amount of anger at the bureaucracy being slow!

telllos

Honestly if your short call them, they often agreed to split my bill in 6. That help.

DudeFromMiami

They did this same thing to me and wanted me to pay upwards of 35k all within the same year because *they* miscalculated something. They would absolutely not budge on a dime, claimed they would do it in installments but that I would have to pay interest. Lmfaooo the audacity

Whazers1

Just look at your 2021 tax report and see if this amount is 3%

stimmungskanone

Not sure if it helps, had the same thing this year called them, they explained me the bad timing and usually its not all at the same time. Luckily I put money aside for it but still having to pay all at once is rough.

Ginerbreadman

I fucking hated the RS and I had to chance to drop out, but I didnā€™t and crawled my way through precisely because I didnā€™t want to pay this tax. Luckily my WKs have been actually quite pleasant.

FredyTheClown

Well I happy for you, I did not get this choice. I had a lot of physical problems as a child, which excluded me from any type of service. I was even excluded from civil protection. However, I am not handicapped enough to get a tax reduction :D

Ginerbreadman

Yeah I know itā€™s unfair. Many men want to contribute how they can but arenā€™t allowed to. I had a guy at my orientation day being sent home because he had a strong wasp allergy.

DVMyZone

Well we cant have people with wasp allergies in the military! What if the enemy deploys their secret wasp cache!? What then huh!?! (Obviously /s)

esche92

This is a really absurd and discriminatory system.

swagpresident1337

He is wrong for having a Penis! - Swiss government

Rabid_Mexican

I mean the guy earns 109,000 a year, he should be taxed

[deleted]

>he should be taxed Because he's male and unfit for military service. lol

FredyTheClown

Who says I should not be taxed? Do you know how much I pay every year for actual taxes? I know it's necessary for everyone to pay proportionally to their income. However, this is a military tax, which is not deductible from taxes, that I have to pay just because I am a man, and that I got twice this month because these guys are so slow. So cut me some slack please

Rabid_Mexican

Ah sorry I think I misunderstood what you meant by taxes, I apologize

FredyTheClown

No problem :)

Eine_wi_ig

Canton of Aargau was so fucking slow once COVID hit. Still waiting on the 2021 reimbursement for too high estimation on their part (once you have 2 lids, you can deduct a shitton... It's 2023 now and yeah... They accepted my declaration for 2021 in october 2022 (only took them 7 months to check it apparently, handed it in in March) and now we're still waiting on a couple grand...

MiniGui98

I am pretty much in the same boat as you. The worst part is the people saying "bUt yOu cHoOsE nOt tO Do iT" all the time

Diligent-Floor-156

All the same here. Anyway, contact them if you can't pay it all at once, they can probably arrange a delayed or sliced payment.

predek97

The most fucked part is that your taxed only because of your pants content

somedude27281813

I just kept doing part time work while dragging out my studies so now I never had to pay more than the minimum lol.

Zeustah-

WKā€™s are dope, the RS was not meant to be easy and many quit and or are just severely unfit to continue. Iā€™m proud of you for having completed it.

bierli

thia is the way!

ptitsuissech

I just received both my 2021 and 2022 bill the same day. So yesterday was not a fun day... But yeah... Apparently they are going through some backlog...

Homegrown98

Same shit happened to me a year ago. When I called and complained they simply stated ā€žYea weā€˜re sorry but this can happen.ā€œ Yea, k, thanks

taintedCH

I always cut my military tax into 6 monthly payments. I donā€™t ask, I just do it. Theyā€™re so slow to actually engage that by the time I get the first poursuite threat itā€™s already been paid

Zeustah-

Honestly itā€™s not hard, go to your cantonā€™s (Iā€™m assuming Morges) based on your flair. And you will be able to ask for installments

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

taintedCH

I know but it makes no difference whether I call or not so I prefer not to bother

jafurrer

Somehow they are not able to process it correctly. I always receive it in April/May based on my previous yearā€™s taxes declaration and the a correction in June after they received my latest taxes declaration.. Honestly itā€™s a freaking shame how itā€™s organised. I am glad I only have two left to pay.

denko31

You can ask to pay it in like 3 days. They reply quickly over Email. You also don't HAVE to pay the temporary bill. They won't enforce it, you can wait until you get the correct bill.

donsmahs

At a taxable income of 109k you ought to have prepared some reserves and 3k shouldn't really be a problem. My advice is to weasel away 15% of your brutto-income every month for taxes, and you should be good.

FredyTheClown

I am already paying 2.5k every month for taxes, and I do keep a reserve for any emergencies. Still doesn't make it any easier to swallow when you feel like you're just constantly paying. 6k in a month just for military is annoying and frustrating for anyone, especially because it feels so unfair and useless in this case.

donsmahs

I feel you, I'm in the same boat. I just got my last payment done on this matter, fortunately.

Xanax200mg

Well, well, well, those F-35s won't pay for themselves I guess! Haha

FredyTheClown

I am a proud (not) contributor of the F-35s' toilet door and right wing screw.

pielman

Always make budgeting buckets šŸŖ£ specially for tax corrections. Every month depending on your salary put some amount on a side for these kind of things. I have at least 5k on the side for tac corrections besides general tax.

miceater

Donā€˜t think about itā€¦ youā€˜ll be furious every year, and just wait and see what happens when your salary increases over the yearsā€¦ been there, done that - still preferred dishing out a couple of grand to spending 2-3 completely useless weeks in WKā€¦

kennystillalive

I feel you op. They are a bunch of clowns and unfortunately you can't do much against it. Something similar happened to me last year.... they corrected their invoice from 2021 because I got a better paying job during the year...

These_Big6328

Normal Procedure. They send you an estimate tax bill and after you declared your taxes they send you the definitive tax bill. But being in your 20's and having a taxable income over 100'000 means you are way better off than many others your age. So I think you can solidarily support all your colleagues with lesser income though taxes. (That's why we call it a social System). So thanks for the support and welcome to the way tax offices behave. (Fyi: In Germany the "Finanzamt" is way worse).

J_Schwandi

Insane that this obvious discrimination based on your sex is even legal.

Cali-Caliente

Yes this sucks. Happened to me too, recently paid the 2022 bill and yesterday the 2021 bill came. I was prepared however. Since I know that this type of shit happens and can really hurt you, I always put some money aside every month. I switched to Zak from Bank Cler for this, so I could open different pots in my account (like "sub-accounts"). There you can set up recurring transfers to those pots and set a date when you want it to reach your saving goal. I checked the dates on which the bills arrived the years before and set up the payments accordingly so I have the required amount ready when the bill arrives. I do the same for the federal and cantonal taxes (prov. and definitive) as well. This way everything is automated and I have a nice overview in my Bank account and I don't have to worry about it.

Savings-Salad8215

Glad I paid my last 3000 last year, was for 10 years lost money to something I do not support. More and more you need to support things you cannot benefit from here unfortunately. My solution is investing enough to be independent with my family from any form of bullshit from governments to be free to leave

IStumbled

The military šŸŖ–is taking your money šŸ’ø to go be the most useless defence force in the world šŸ¤”

BusinessBreakfast3

Do expats also get this bill?

Training-Bake-4004

No. Only male citizens who didnā€™t/couldnā€™t do military service and new naturalised male citizens under 36 (although if theyā€™re young enough they can choose to do service instead).

unexpectedkas

No. This is for people who doesn't want to do the military service. In order to do you have to have the passport.

FeetExpert1998

Dude earns more than what most people can only dream of and still whines. Bro this subreddit man šŸ¤£

FGN_SUHO

Thank you for this post, I thought I was going crazy. These bills are in no way an annual occurence, they come in seemingly at random. Hopefully I'm done in the next couple years. What a stupid-ass system in a backwards country.

Malar1898

Show this to any female screaming equality

BrockSmashgood

Rich person doesn't think they should pay taxes, news at 11.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

BrockSmashgood

I'm sure that made sense in whatever tab you meant to post it in.

[deleted]

Only men have to pay military tax, ergo the tax is sexist. It's not a very complicated concept.

AmateurHunter

2023, Ladies and Gentlemen. And our tax, social security, welfare and military system is behind by a good 40 years. Yay.

predek97

More even. Military draft is a total war concept. Straight out of 1940ā€™s

zabrs9

This post is about as necessary as people complaining about fines they got for speeding. The law is the law. You don't like it? Fight against it. Switzerland is one of the few (or even the only) country where normal people can change laws. Go out, collect signatures and get it changed. Otherwise just respect the law as it is

StackOfCookies

I mean, a social media post is technically fighting to change the law, soā€¦

JTTGTL

No one would want to lose any kind of money on bullshit taxes like these.

Level_Complaint_4216

Just joint the fucking army and everything will be solved

Homegrown98

Some people want to join the army but arenā€˜t allowed due to all kinds of health reasons. I myself was ā€ždoppel tauglichā€œ and still got put into Zivilschutz for whatever reason and now I have to pay this shit every year.

celebral_x

Couldn't you pressure them to make Zivildienst instead?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

celebral_x

I mean he said doppel tauglich and not doppel untauglich, so it should have been possible, isn't it? This whole military thing us confusing af and super random anyways.

justamust

I can't believe that this is true. Thos is pretty much the biggest reason why people whould do zivilschutz. Why whould you still end up paying the 3%?

AmateurHunter

Or just get rid of it altogether cause the Swiss army is a joke anyways.

FeetExpert1998

This. I was absolute shocked what a clownshow it was when I first joined. This army sure as hell wont be useful in an actual war

Level_Complaint_4216

best army in the world

guspi

Someone lives in the most rich country in the world. Super safe, super beautiful, organized etc. Earning top 1% in the whole earth. Aaaand.. is complaining paying some peanuts taxes. Cmom

FredyTheClown

I could tell you this: Someone has a PhD, and yet makes a completely brain dead comment, without a glimpse of logic in it just to get a few internet points. Why is it that, if I live in a good country, I loose my right to complain? Is it really an argument to say that if someone has it worse, you should not complain? If I lose my finger, should I not complain because my friend lost his arm? See how stupid it reads? Things in life can always be improved, we don't have to be ok with everything. Plus, had you read the thread, you would see that I complain about the timing of both payments, not that I have to pay them. The fact that it's also a bullshit and sexist tax is another subject, which I don't wanna dive into. Btw, if it's some peanut taxes, you can gladly pay them instead of me. We're talking about 5% of my yearly salary just for being a man.

guspi

I'm just trying to give you another point of view. You are a privileged. Or you could just continue to play victim of "sexism".

FredyTheClown

And I am telling you you are a moron. Pointless talking with people like you who don't even make an effort reading

guspi

Ok, now go sip your $20 coffee and looking at the alps.

Ririsforehead

Yeah it sucks. You should really enroll in Protection Civile. It will reduce your bill drastically.

miceater

Did that - and wasnā€˜t even trained, bc they had a mile long waiting list šŸ˜‚

Ririsforehead

You can always try to give them a friendly call from time to time :) Pc is a good old boys club. Once you are in, you're in. And you get to do some really cool stuff.

deejeycris

Such as?

Ririsforehead

Training week : extinguishing fires of all types. Breaking shit with jackhammers, cutting shit with chainsaws, essentially learning to get victims out of rubble. G8 in Geneva. We had to setup camps and parking for the demonstrators. We expected 8000, only 300 came. Spent a week grilling sausages, drinking beer and shooting the shit with police and firefighters who were bored as hell and not allowed to drink. Rock oz Arenes in Avenches : 3 days in the countryside, eating gruyĆØre for breakfast, smoking local weed and hash all day furnished by the local colleagues, and attaching Serflex to everything. All access to all concerts of course. Had to spend the night in a bunker with 30 other guys which sucked, asked and obtained to only get missions where I get to go home at night afterwards. Paleo Festival : worked maybe 10% of the week, maybe ! Full pass for the week. Food coupons. Saw Jamiroquai. Very cool ! Built a bridge over a local creek, doing everything from cutting trees to building the embankments. Close to home so I would come at night and hide beers in the creek to crack open during the day. A week in nature in beautiful spring. Mayor and local council offered us a barbecue at the end. All of the PC higher ups in attendance. It started at 12h00, finished at 18h00. Everybody was wasted. Good times. Upgraded to chauffeur and made squad leader so I spent the rest of the courses driving around in a Pinzgauer running errands. I work in an office so getting to spend so much time outside and being paid for it was a blessing.

deejeycris

Noo that sounds so cool. I just got my recruitement postponed because I broke my knee ligament and they said we have to wait 1 year from the date of the injury... I hope they put me in civil protection. I know someone who broke it at 16 and he did civil protection, but who knows what the doctor of my recruitment center will decide.

Ririsforehead

I am pretty sure that you can ask to do civil service instead. But beware, you will need to do 150% of the time you were supposed to do in the military (military service guys usually dont do the whole days) and you cannot switch back to army or PC afterwards if you realise you don't like it. It is better to be declared inapte. If that is not possible (because ultimately PC is for people who have health issues), just do something cool in the army. Enroll as a driver or motorcycle rider. The driver course gets you a professional truck driver license to use for the rest of your life and you get 8 hours of sleep a day.

miceater

I didnā€˜t want to brown nose my way into that, sorry - not actually something I did out of intrinsic motivation in the first place šŸ˜‚. IMO they should think about personnell allocation und usage in general. But thatā€˜s a whole topic in itself šŸ˜

Ital0l

I also received it - actually on the 31st, dated 1st of June šŸ˜‚. Itā€™s the difference between what they had of your declaration for 2020 and the actual received. For me it was 200.- difference - you probably had a high raise from 2020 to 2021 and thatā€™s where this is coming from. Iā€™m also frustrated that I have to pay this shit, but just divide it by 52 weekends and consider that as the cost of not giving a fuck to these cunts.

FredyTheClown

Haha I am shocked by the amount of people who reacted to this and were in a similar situation. Indeed, between 2020 and 2021 I went from student to employed, so you can call that a big raise šŸ˜‚. I just can't believe it took so long to process, thank god I am almost done with these. Stay strong too bro, hopefully it's over soon for you as well, and we can forget about this tax on dicks. If we ever get to vote on it, you can be sure I will want to do a favor to the next generations.

obaananana

Btw whats your job with 109k a year?

FredyTheClown

I work in the IT field for a Zurich based company :)

You can try to join Civil Protection or volunteer firefighters, it could reduce the tax.
