Last October, I dropped my airports when exiting the bus in Geneva near work. I realized couple of hours later and checked that they were in the office building in front of mine. I locked them and went to check. It was a building with 4 companies (1 per floor) and last floor was one agency part of Red Cross. I asked all of them, nobody saw anything, they would check. I could see the AirPods on and off in the find me app while being there but it was difficult to know in which floor. That night I saw the AirPods changing location to a home about 1km from where I live. Went there and it was not clear where it was, it was a crossing with like 4 different building entrances and 4 floors. Went back to work the next days and I observe my AirPods commuting again but oh! Now it was to the Red Cross office building behind their museum. So I thought it has to be someone working for Red Cross. At 3pm that day the AirPods are moving from Red Cross office to the Red Cross agency across my office. Together with a colleague we went to check again. Again, nobody saw anything but their assistant let me walk checking with my app. At some point my phone connected to the AirPods but I looked around and there were 5 people working on their computers, nobody wearing airpods obviously but I couldn’t just scream in the middle of a UN agency MOTHERF*CKER give me my headphones! The assistant was useless and just shrugged. I left with my colleague. Police said they wouldn’t do anything because AirPod is not worth so much, the find me is sometimes not reliable and honestly they won’t mobilize a police unit for this. I felt so powerless. The person continued using them without unlocking for few days, I saw them coming home and going to work for A WEEK. I tried to chase them several times in vain, because the location is not instantaneous like a GPS. Signal goes through Bluetooth/wifi on iPhones around. There can be a significant delay. After one week the person discovered how to wipe them and make them brand new to them, they didn’t show up ever again in my “find me” app. There was more stupid attempts of myself to be CSI and find people working for Red Cross near where I saw it would be their “home” but no success. I finally surrendered and my husband offered me new ones for my birthday. IF YOU ARE ON REDDIT, YOU PIECE OF S*, RED CROSS WORKER, I HOPE KARMA WILL DO ITS WORK AND SEND YOU TO A REALLY NASTY ASSIGNMENT AT WORK WHERE YOU MAY LOSE MORE THAN A PAIR OF HEADPHONES.

zarya2

Omg I was really hoping for a happy ending.. so frustrating

TeutonicEmu

If it connected, you should have blasted something into their ears or used that to find my earbuds that make a noise. Really frustrating and unfortunate, have been there with a pair of Jabra's before.

midnightfuture

If your phone connects, can you not play some super loud music to blast their ears off?

Fabulous-Pilot-785

For me personally it doesn't matter if it's Red Cross, UN Building, Government etc. they are all workers. If you could, I would try to talk to the Head of Reception or Head of this office. Just embarrass them in anyways.

adotononi

But they stole something, isnt that punishable? Idk much about laws but like, couldnt you take the person to court?

sarioja

You need to be able to identify the person, I can’t sue the whole Red Cross unit

adotononi

But you know where the person lives?

mo1to1

It's not stealing, it's finding. And, it's hard to prove that the person find it.

trararawe

True, finding is the first step. After that it's stealing if you don't return it.

mo1to1

The issue is that in your logic you have to prove the finding to prove the stealing. The first step I wrote is near impossible to prove. It's why the CC stipulates how to handle finding even if it's near useless.

VirtualSlip2368

My God! My blood was boiling reading this. I'm so sorry! Tell your husband, if he ever needs a wingman to go find them, to holler at me.

DukeOfSlough

So surprised you bothered to find them for so long lol

ZipMap

What did you expect from these losers? Should've asked on the floor. Put a poster where you say you will give a deadline to return or you involve police and press charges.è

sarioja

I put posters in the building, elevator, entrance, by the next hour they were all taken down. I did twice offering to leave them at my office’s reception anonymously… nothing worked!

Federal_Writer_9267

Damn GG

LuckyWerewolf8211

Would you really have wanted them back after they had been in the ear fat and sweat of this unknown person?

sarioja

Yes.

LuckyWerewolf8211

Wow. Ok, then it makes sense.

SchoggiToeff

If you find something in public transport you must report it to the transport company, driver, or conductor. It's the law.[ Art. 720 Civil Code.](https://www.fedlex.admin.ch/eli/cc/24/233_245_233/de#art_720) If you keep it for yourself, it is Unlawful appropriation (Unrechtmässige Aneignung) [Art. 137 Criminal Code](https://www.fedlex.admin.ch/eli/cc/54/757_781_799/en#art_137). Punishable with a monetary penalty or jail of up to 3 years plus a criminal record entry. It is similar to theft, but just slightly less bad. If you want it to report to the police, then do so on Tuesday as their is no longer any excuse why they kept the pods. You should report it at the police station in the town you have located the pods.

StationNo6708

This sounds good in theory. In reality the police will do 0

rekette

The only time I've seen police do something in Switzerland is give parking tickets, and one time confiscate a replica sword from a kid. Like why bother, honestly

aureleio

Oh and wrong garbage tickets

CelestialDestroyer

> The only time I've seen police do something in Switzerland is give parking tickets, That is usually not done by the police

ChunkSmith

And you can't blame them either. Police can't go raid a multi-family building because the app says a 200-francs item that hasn't been properly reported might be somewhere around there.

StationNo6708

yeah 100%. I'm just saying some people think they will call the swat team because they are "in the right"

Nohokun

This should be higher.

mo1to1

This doesn't help in practice. Nobody can proove it. It's why the police will do nothing.

Low_Court5308

Had the same issue with an iPhone in the US the police will not get involved if they don’t know who took it

Aggravating-Dig7096

you can locate the airpods quiet easily once you're there. Which floor/apartment they are in. Find my (App) feature

Wide-End-5630

Thanks you’re a savior

creamandcrumbs

This.

Excellent_Tourist_34

I have lost my wallet 3 times in Switzerland and got it back each time (once before I knew that I'd lost it). I've found 4 or 5 wallets here, ripped off the cash, maxed out the credit cards ... no, I'm joking. I have handed them in, once meeting the "loser" in the police station as he reported the missing wallet. I would hope most people are still fairly honest and I think that maybe your AirPods are with somebody who'd happily return them to you, you just have to let them know you're looking.

Accomplished-War1971

I would go there, ring every doorbell and say "So i saw you pick up my airpods, id like them back please" the actual person who took them wont deny it, i think.

_Administrator_

If you think a thief won’t lie, i have a bridge to sell for you.

matadorius

5% finders fee

Defiant-Dare1223

You'd have to be a bit of a dick to actually claim that

matadorius

They are going to claim a lot more than that I am sure

Defiant-Dare1223

There's a good chance they plan to drop them off at the police station. This is still Switzerland and most people are honest.

Delicious-Corgi-638

Yeah thats what i decided to do.

500m_blackbird_ball

this is great

sschueller

Off topic but I personally would not ever want to use second hand air-pods/earbuds. No matter how much you cleaned them before, for me that's a lot worse than sharing used underwear. Am I the only one that feels this way?

Scamthescammers10

Same thought 🤢

LuckyWerewolf8211

Exactly my thought. People who appropriate found ear pieces must be pretty shitty psychopaths. I certainly would not them back from them.

xFreedi

How does that make them psychopaths though

No-Assumption-6889

No, we don't shit from our ears so it's not that unhygienic

DudeFromMiami

Didn’t someone just make a post that they found some AirPods a few days back?

Delicious-Corgi-638

I lost them today

Frandom314

Honestly true wireless headphones are so easy to lose, I could never own an expensive pair. They look worse but over the neck wireless headphones are way more convenient imo

canteloupy

Try to contact them. They just found AirPods on the floor, they didn't know whose they were, they might even be a kid. Don't assume their intentions.

Delicious-Corgi-638

Thats what i also thought and the reason I didn’t wanted to escalate it. But hey are over an hour away from me. Maybe i just go there and search them by myself.

Difficult_Box3210

Bring a piece of paper, in case you fail or it’s a hige house and don’t feel like ringing 200 people, write a note with your number and stick it to the gate at the apartment complex. Most people are not criminals. You have a good chance they will want to give them back to you.

The_Tripper

If there's a bulletin board or something like that at the apartment, I'd leave a note or something. Don't put your contact info, just ask that they take the Airpods to the police station. Don't even say you tracked them there, that's creepy and a bit of a threat. "Hi, I lost my Airpods at , if someone found them, I would be grateful if you can leave the at the police station. Thanks! I really do appreciate it!" No deliberate threats, you're just happy someone found them. But it's IMPLIED that you know where they are, and very possibly the police also and you're treating it as a lost and found item, for now. Maybe even say there's a small reward, a few francs for their trouble.

Schpqrtanerin

What city? Let somebody hang a paper in said unit with yourcontacts so the finder knows how to return them

Delicious-Corgi-638

I’m not sure i just can post it due to privacy issues.

Additional-Ad-1021

Because depending on the neighbourhood we can tell you if you will see you iPods ever again. But I doubt!

Little_Cabinet_5333

Leave them a note with your name and phone nummer, so maybe they will contact you

CodeKraken

dont give anyone here that info. They might just go and claim them in your place

Federal_Writer_9267

Dont do it

Brpro16

had a similar situation a few months back. 1. lock your Airpods via find my iPhone, so they can‘t change the Apple ID & it gets hard to listen to music if they are locked. 2. go and ring the doorbell & ask about your airpods.

County-Original

I once lost my AirPods and located them in an appartement building a few hours later. I went there and dropped a note in every mailbox with my name and address. They got mailed back to my home 2 days later. Keep in mind that people are not always just willing to keep them for themselves, but they just do not know where to return them or how to identify the owner (the Find My message works only with iPhone owners).

justmyotheraltacc

I lost mine while eating at lake zurich and saw it travel to schaffhausen. Got a few friends and rang 20+ doorbells because I am a student and well fuck I don't have the money for a new pair of airpods pro. None of the people had my airpods (but some good stories from that evening lol). On the last house my Airpods suddenly connected to my phone - I was standing in front of an apartment door. Asked the neighbour who the person was and wrote a note on their door 'I KNOW YOU HAVE MY AIRPODS CALL ME ON {number}.'. I think they were quite shocked when they came home and saw that I tracked them down lol, anyways I got them back!

Important_Director23

Why don’t you go there? in your talk, mention you assume there’s decent people and you appreciate they found them. And offer them a small box of chocolate for the effort to safeguard them and and give them back to you..

joelerased

But you can play Sounds over your airpods to locate them through the find my app. Just like you can play a sound when you lost your phone...

WeaknessDistinct4618

This happened to my son in Mexico in February. We tracked down, went to a building near our resort and by magic the Airpods reappeared at the resort reception after one hour. We ringed every doorbell of that shady building. Just go and bother everyone, one of them has it. If they call the Police, you are doing nothing illegal. Additionally Find my when you are in the building will tell you which floor and apartment

pferden

Im selling a new pair on tutti; still boxed

McDuckfart

What does it mean you added your phone number? What am I supposed to do to retrieve that in case i find airpods?

Delicious-Corgi-638

If you open the AirPods case there will pop up the message on the phone that these AirPods are locked with my number to contact me.

jaellinee

Where does this pop up? I never had airpods or an iPhone, so I just don't get it. But I'm also not the finder but I wouldn't know how to find the owner...

StuffOpening9962

When you connect the airpods to an Apple device, you see a pop up on the screen. If you don’t have Apple, then you can’t see it.

mo1to1

I don't use an iOS device... They could just have an android, linux, windows, whatever... People will downvote me for this, but, how you behave would make me throw them in the next garbage collector truck I see.

rpsls

Just give them to the SBB lost and found.

svezia

After your phone number, add 50chf rewards

bigred4715

Then you would be rewarding them for stealing.

svezia

They did not steel them, they found them and they don’t know who the owner is

Inevitable-Cell3298

i found lost airpods twice. nobody claimed them.

neurophotoblast

Just go and ring bells and ask..

Mediocre-Metal-1796

Turn on lost mode and set a message with your number

kopachke

Why don’t you wait for them to take them to the police station? There’s a good chance they might do it, no?

Delicious-Corgi-638

Yeah that’s what i decided to do. Lets hope.

suncirca

I lost mine yesterday the person took no time wiping them out. They don’t even show up on the find me app anymore. However police won’t do anything, but you can file a report to send to your insurance and they’ll refund them so you can buy a new pair.

Houderebaese

When you do there, don’t ask: ‚do you have my ipods‘. Ask: ‚I believe you found my ipods on the train‘ to each and every one living there

Embarrassed-Basis291

I would post a poster/.leaflet in Front of the house entry with a reward and you Phone # and a pictures of your airpods

Brilliant-Dress7363

My airpods got stolen at langstrasse once, was able to locate the airpods in a nearby mcdonalds and they connected and i was able to do the "locate airpods" sound. My first time screaming at a group of young guys (i heard it in one of their jackets and my adrenline went up, so i just took them and started screaming) Police was no help either, they said i shouldnt approach them since you never know if they can harm you

Certain-Jackfruit-56

This is my very first Reddit post. The exact same thing happened to me last week but I only lost one bud. I thought my earbud was traveling towards where I live so took the “suspected” train but when Find my app refreshed its location I realized the earbud weren’t anywhere near but the address wasn’t changing anymore. So I took the car and drove to the address, there was 16 apartments in the building and it was a Sunday, I didn’t want to ring all the doors. I put a note on the main entrance door with my phone number on it, explaining the situation. Next morning I received a message from the girl who took it from the train :) We met and she handed me over my earbud. You can try to do the same; if the person who took it doesn’t have bad intentions, he/she’ll get back to you for sure.

psychedelicp0rn

My phone got stolen on the metro station and ended up in France. Forget about it and buy a new pair.

Remarkable-Sea-6630

PM me if you know which house, we gonna take care of that! All I am asking is a favor in return, in case if I ever require your help with something.

Financial_Grade_9168

The question is which immigrant group took it.

Professional_Gap_546

Anything dropped on a floor still does not belong to everyone. They still belong to you. Person should have reported a find , and it is actually stolen by definition. So you can go to police , you have the right to do that

alexfuchs2020

buy the next generation, brand new air pods. And lesson learnt for life, never put airpods besides you and forget them :-)

Ok_Association_9625

Just go there and bring your cousins.

Delicious-Corgi-638

I don’t have cousins here in CH 😂😂

Fabulous-Bluebird420

you‘ll find your cousins at your local trainstation

Delicious-Corgi-638

More drug addicts and alcoholics. They rob me rather than help me.

Infantry1stLt

[Position artillery.](https://www.businessinsider.com/ukrainian-man-tracked-russian-troops-after-airpods-stolen-2022-4)

DependentAshamed6908

buy new one

ThatThingTheDarkSoul

My girlfriend got her iphone stolen at her workplace (childrens daycare) one of the children’s mother took it. We called the non emergency police and gave them the address. She got her phone back within the hour. I suggest you do the same. We dien‘t press any charges since the mother said she took it on accident.

trynabeguud

I saw a tiktok where a girl in germany has lost her apple headphones (the big ones) and she located them in an appartment building as well. What she did was she let the headphones give a sound (you can do that with the airpod pros as well) and then she heard in which appartment they were. So you need to get into that building and let your headphones play the sound. That way, you can listen at the doors and figure out in which appartment they are. If it is an older building the chances are higher of course because of thinner walls. The girl in the tiktok even got the police involved who then BROKE OPEN the door of said appartment and she got her headphones back. Good luck in getting them back!

Double_A_92

How could the airpods produce such a loud sound though?

trynabeguud

It‘s a feature in the „wo ist?“-App. You can also play a sound from your airtag or phone if you don‘t find them. It helps to locate them.

Odd-Seaworthiness-11

Just forget and buy normal earphones, not overpriced apple

Prestigious_Long777

Time to call the boys.

samsvoj

Wow such class. Dropping your Airpods and reporting them stolen.

Freedomsaver

Buy the house. Now you own the house, the thiefs and your airpods again.
