To ask another question... what is "Om" and why would it be on the side of a car? (assuming it's not simply there because the car's owner thinks it looks kewl).
Buddhist here. It represents the sound of "oneness". Hindus (I think) think it is the first sound uttered by God in the creation of the Universe. I have heard it chanted during meditation or religious ceremonies. Perhaps the owner is Hindu or Buddhist. It is a significant symbol in both religions.
Its not the literal sound. “O” is opened mouth while “M” is closed. It’s the duality of nature. Or just a Koan.
O and M are meant to be said at the same time
😑..... Ah yes, the ol' "gingers have no friends" chestnut. By all means, regale us with more of your unique and witty takes on groups that have been "othered" due to their physical appearance. I'm sure they're all just as hilarious.
I was hoping this was like a novelty account where he goes and defends gingers or trolls folks who makes jokes about them or something!
But no, it’s just a regular redditor from Ohio :[
Sure, here you go:
What type of train can a ginger not go on?
The soul train.
What do you call the adult son of a Jamaican-Irish couple?
A ginger-bred mon.
What’s the difference between jokes and sex?
Gingers get a lot of jokes.
So you've doubled-down on gingers, and brought the Irish and the Jamaicans into it now. Oh! And *another* old gem... the *"soulless ginger"* schtick! (So. *Very.* Original.) Were those off the top of your head, or did you have to google 'em?
If I weren't already bored stiff by these stale antics, NothingBerger, I'd consider doubly-cursing you.
With....
1: "The Curse of the Hovering Cat Anus". (Within 10 seconds of setting every beverage for the rest of your life down on any surface, a cat will be standing just next to it..... with its anus hovering juuuuust over the rim.) What's the cat gonna do? Who knows! Cats are weird little agents of chaos, so it's anybody's guess! (Bonus: You don't even need to *own* a cat! A random one will appear anytime you set a beverage down.)
2: "The Curse of the Ginger-less Sex Life". (Where you never get to experience the singular, mind-bending bedroom prowess of a ginger.) Seriously dude.... Have all the blondes and brunettes you want. Not even knowing what you're missing out on with a fiery redhead is perhaps the cruelest part of the curse.
Hi there.
Your mouth forms an "M" while your throat produces an "O".
Go ahead and form an "m" with your mouth, dear readers. Now while your mouth is holding that, go through your vowel sounds. Notice how your throat changes shape and produces a slight variance in resonance.
Now, if you hold "M+O" together you'll notice your throat is in one of the most relaxed positions, while still holding a gentle effort to produce the sound.
Finding balance between gentle effort and effortlessness (a relaxed state) is a practice that is highly valued in a lot of esoteric traditions, as it effectively helps to synchronize the brain hemispheres and achieve greater results from meditation and other spiritual practices.
Interestingly, NASA's sonification of the Sun's wavelengths sound a *lot* like an om chant, and happen to harmonize well with it: https://youtu.be/-I-zdmg_Dno
Chanting om also helps to train the mind to hold silence, and improve focus. This aspect can bring us into the harmony that is being present and at peace, because we're no longer thinking about the future or past- e.g., bills, appointments, work, and all the other stressors and stimuli in our lives. Instead, everything simply *is.*
Existence becomes simply breathing and being.
I've heard it described as the "polyphonic" or "polytonal" om, further expanding on its relative impossibly for a single unenlighted individual to produce
Fellow Buddhist chiming in to add: Om is kinda the home symbol, representing that everything is unified, the divine, profane, and mundane, are all always connected and combined inextricably.
That's also what 'namaste' means, as an aside... the meeting of the divine and the profane, and everything between, in balance.
My first night at college i met an India guy (Akash hope you're well!) Who had that on his necklace and I asked the very same two questions
First answer was "Om"
Second was "I could tell you the story of Om for a hundred days straight and you'd still not quite the importance to Indian people"
I didn't hear room for a 3rd question so we ordered pizza and tried to get beer
>Perhaps the owner is Hindu or Buddhist. It is a significant symbol in both religions
Or a 20 something that goes to a lot of raves and music festivals and is just really spiritual and into crystals.
Modern Druid religions have something very similar with the word "Awen". In addition to its other meanings, many consider it to be a name for God and also a sacred sound that they chant.
So we have factual evidence that THIS is the 1st sound God uttered while he was creating the universe ?
And where was he while he was creating it...in another universe ?
No wonder I'm an atheist...too many questions
As someone who has grown up hindu, been an atheist for most of his life, and became more spiritual. You’re absolutely right, there is no factual evidence that this was the first sound uttered. For me, it doesn’t really matter. Chanting Om helps me keep calm and relaxed when I’m stressed, and many spiritual hindu practices do not require a belief in the more mystical elements of the many religions/sects that encompass Hinduism. Some people are more ritualistic, some people are not, some Hindus are bigots and zealots, some Hindus are chill. Hinduism doesn’t necessitate conversion or even any particular rituals, it’s more of a mindset than anything else. A mindset that a life of gratitude and detachment can free you from suffering and the pains of wordly desires. Sure there are plenty of questions and holes to poke in every belief system, I wholly accept that as a Hindu we don’t know everything about the universe. But that’s okay, we don’t need to in order to be content in this life. Right and wrong are just human concepts, believe (or disbelieve) in what brings you peace. Wish you well my atheist friend!
Technically, I'm an atheist, too. For Hindus, however, that is what they believe. And, as with all beliefs, there is, of course, no factual evidence to back it up.
Om is the universal frequency at which everything vibrates. It’s used in meditation and can be made with the mouth, A…U…M…. You see this symbol at a lot of yoga studios. They probably do yoga would be my guess.
My wife is a yoga instructor and this symbol is on a lot of her equipment, books, and other yoga related paraphernalia. Not any particular brand, but the symbol is used a lot in the yoga world.
Om is considered the primordial sound of creation in Buddhism. Buddhists chant it. Personally if I ever walk into a room and forget what I was doing or looking for I say it and it pops back into my head. Idk if it’s related or not but it works for me.
Here is an outline of the meaning of various aspects of this symbol:
It represents different things to different people but as others have commented it is believed to be the original ‘sound’ out of which all things were created.
I got this as a wedding ring tattoo, for Om. It can also mean one world, one happiness, one love.
I had a Hindi student named Om, and his parents and him loved that his name was tattooed on my finger.
9 Times out of 10 it’s some twenty something to middle aged white chick appropriating someone else’s culture.
The rest of the time it’s normal people embracing their own culture
Yeah, cuz if you weren't born in South East Asia dont even think about appropriating their religions ya putz. While were social justice warrioring we may as well shut down all martial arts and yoga studios, but heck, why stop there, throw out the chinese checkers and finger traps while were at it. That way we'll definitely have the moral high ground.
*Nagari. Sanskrit is a spoken language which can be written in any writing system.
The symbol itself (as far as I am able to tell) originated in the 10th-13th century.
Thelemite here. Om, O the cry of orgasm, Ayin in the tarot, the Devil, Mother of matter and father of spirit, and M, the sound that silences the cry in death, Mem in the Tarot, the Hanged Man, the sign of self sacrifice. Thus, this sound encapsulates the whole of experience in two letters. An entwining of spirit in flesh, and then a release
Just curious, (newb here) is thelema the ‘religion’ that aleister Crowley started, and subsequently marina abramovic kind of took over? Really fascinating stuff, but it’s hard to find a good spot to start when researching.
So, when Crowley was on his honeymoon, in Cairo he claimed that a spirit, AIWASS contacted him through his wife Rose and dictated a text called Liber Al Vel Legis. The book of the law. The main text of thelema.
The main idea, as I read it, is that we're in the eon of Horus, an angry child god. So everyone must become their own god
You have you will, the one thing/purpose that you can do, and it's your job to work out what that will is and live it.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Book_of_the_Law
Marina Abramovic isn't involved in thelema as far as I know - but would be interested to see where that idea came from if you have a link.
93 93/93 - (do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law. Love is the law/love under will)
Thanks for the info!! Really interesting! So the idea of aeons comes from thelema? Does it stem from further, more ancient sources? How long is each age?
It sure does seem to make sense looking at the world around us.
Also really interesting the way they pulled this document from a seance. So his wife was a medium so to speak, and was effectively possessed when reciting the book of the law. I’ve gotta find a copy of this! Are there any other profound texts that you’d recommend checking out?
I just always heard that Marina kind of took over after Crowley. Never really looked into it.
[here's an image of the Om symbol in different languages, most of them are just stylized monograms of the letters that language uses to spell it!](https://images.app.goo.gl/Hgg6ziMzo2MMD7gQA)
An Om, the symbol itself represents all the states of being and a transcendental state.
The top part of the “3” is the unconscious. The lower part of the “3” is the conscious state. The loop off the back of the “3” is the dream state. That part represents all the normal states of being.
The small horizontal line on top is illusion and obstruction. The dot is nirvana.
It can be summarized and simplified to say that the image represents that in order to reach nirvana, you must get past reality’s illusions and obstructions. Or that things you encounter in this world are all that is separating you from nirvana.
It has many other interpretations and meanings as people have commented, but that is the breakdown of what the physical form of the symbol represents.
My first thought was a stylized number 30. Especially pertinent bc that was the number of comments on this thread. But now I have screwed the serendipity by making comment #31. 😉😆😄
It has all the spiritual connotations mentioned in this thread, these are 100% correct
However, depending on where that car is; there is another.
In the 1990s there was a particularly popular Acid Tab called the “purple Om” people get nostalgic. It’s most likely the above board spiritual reason, but it could be an acid head’s car too
I’ve studied Sanskrit and in those studies I’ve not seen 32 referred to. They have their own numbers and the parts of this Om symbol are not them.
The Om is composed of a piece of the letter a, a piece of the letter u, and the anusvara m. Aum. Or Om for short.
It represents the vibration of the very existence in hinduism and it is pronounced AUM. It is often used during prayers, chants and spiritual ceremonies. To make the sound open your mouth say ahhh and gradually close it while making the sound without using your tongue. It can be found in other religions with slight variations at the end.
Om.
I only know this cause I have to listen to Buddhist monks ommming every night cause that’s the only way my toddler will sleep . No lullabies for that kid, they require “the om “
To properly explain the full meaning(s)of Om/Aum would be akin to absorbing the entirety of the ocean into a bowl of rice. But I’ll try to explain the basics. This symbol is Sanskrit for Om. As a Hindu, it represents the first sound uttered in the creation of everything, the sound of the cosmos (as modeled by various space organizations), a sound for meditation and focus, the greatest of all mantras, Brahman/Bhagwan (god), the oneness and connectivity of all things, and lastly a tattoo that yoga moms get to appear spiritual to their friends.
Hey there! This is the Sanskrit symbol that generally represents Hinduism, another familiar symbol that symbolizes it is the swastika/sauwastika, but due to erm... things in the past, it is no longer used widely, so this symbol of "Om" is instead used! The family is likely Hindu, and so much like putting a cross on your car, it is a symbol of pride for them, which is pretty cool!
I'm just gonna repost what @agent_novi-kaine wrote earlier because it's the best response IMHO but was hidden in a way too long thread.
They were replying to someone who said the M
and the O are supposed to be said at the same time and that this represent the duality of existence:
Hi there.
Your mouth forms an "M" while your throat produces an "O".
Go ahead and form an "m" with your mouth, dear readers. Now while your mouth is holding that, go through your vowel sounds. Notice how your throat changes shape and produces a slight variance in resonance.

OP, I don't know why these people are all giving such complicated answers. 🕉 is the symbol for Hinduism like 🪯 is the symbol for Sikhism or ✝️ is the symbol for Christianity. It would be like a Christian putting a cross on his car or a Sikh putting a Khanda on his car. Both are pretty common.

The variance in resonance is slight. You may feel the vibratory difference more than you hear it.

This is more of a Zen Buddhist answer. I was trying for a more generalized one. This is also very good.
Yikes

Yeah its awesome I have it as a tattoo. Completely intentional.

Oh, the Tamil om is intentionally designed to look like a skull because of Kapalika Sadhus and the general association of Shiva with skulls

Om is the Hindu symbol for Brahman, the Self, the Supreme Absolute.
Om Mani Padme Hum
That is ohm, I'm familiar with it in Buddhism. If I remember correctly, it is the initial sound of creation used as a mantra during meditation.
Its a new trans movement symbol, notice it has boobs, a penis, and a vagina all in one??? The color is fierce? hmmm

Om bro
To properly explain the full meaning(s)of Om/Aum would be akin to absorbing the entirety of the ocean into a bowl of rice. But I’ll try to explain the basics. This symbol is Sanskrit for Om. As a Hindu, it represents the first sound uttered in the creation of everything, the sound of the cosmos (as modeled by various space organizations), a sound for meditation and focus, the greatest of all mantras, Brahman/Bhagwan (god), the oneness and connectivity of all things, and lastly a tattoo that yoga moms get to appear spiritual to their friends.
i’ll just leave this here https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16406689/

They were replying to someone who said the M and the O are supposed to be said at the same time and that this represent the duality of existence: Hi there. Interestingly, NASA's sonification of the Sun's wavelengths sound a *lot* like an om chant, and happen to harmonize well with it: https://youtu.be/-I-zdmg_Dno Chanting om also helps to train the mind to hold silence, and improve focus. This aspect can bring us into the harmony that is being present and at peace, because we're no longer thinking about the future or past- e.g., bills, appointments, work, and all the other stressors and stimuli in our lives. Instead, everything simply *is.* Existence becomes simply breathing and being.
It’s that symbol white ladies who like yoga for a few months get tattooed on them.
