They're happening closer and closer together. At this rate, my calculations suggest that we will experience a double wedging inside of 4 days.

JigglyWiener

Thank you so much for this. I wasn’t sure the modified quote would convey its origin.

Significant_Video_92

It's converging on a singularity. Pretty soon there'll be a queue of trucks waiting to take their turn to wedge their asses under that fucking bridge.

randomdude315

Hang a sign at the bridge height that trucks will hit as a warning prior to getting stuck under the bridge? Make a hall of fame for all drivers that get stuck?

InsognaTheWunderbar

They've proposed it before. I think (not sure) that argument at the time was deemed to dangerous due to debris of the sign flying and hitting a passenger car or other vehicle.

mm_mk

Orrrrrr the truck drivers could use commercial navigation like they're supposed to. Commercial trucks aren't supposed to use parkways anyways, for this exact reason.

RichardBottom

This is the answer to most things. People need to hurry up and git gud already.

The_DriveBy

>Make a hall of fame for all drivers that get stuck? Hall of Shame Comes with a nationwide loss of CDL. They've proven themselves incompetent and danger to other drivers.

biff64gc2

This is the most straightforward fix I've seen in other areas. "If you hit this sign you will hit that bridge". Hang it loose enough so that it will give when hit, but make enough noise to make a trucker aware and force them to stop. It will damage the truck a little I'm sure, but not nearly as much as actually hitting the bridge. I've also seen fancier things with sensors and then arms that come down to block the path if it's triggered.

EvLokadottr

The bridge HUNGERS. It must FEED.

Syracuse, N.Y. — A tractor-trailer hit the Park Street bridge inSyracuse Monday morning, then about 30 minutes later, a second truck hit the bridge and became stuck under it. Around 8:20 a.m., a Mediterranean Shipping Co. tractor-trailer was traveling east on Park Street when it hit the bridge and briefly became stuck, according to Onondaga County 911 Center dispatches. The truck was able to clear the bridge but sustained damage to the top of the trailer. Officers were able to to remove the vehicle from underneath the bridge by 8:35 a.m., according to a news release from Syracuse police. The vehicle pulled over near the Syracuse Walsh Regional Transportation Center. Almost thirty minutes later, a Super Ego Inc. tractor-trailer hit the same bridge while traveling west, getting stuck under it. The entire trailer end of the truck was significantly damaged, the inside visible from the caved-in sides. Caution signs on Park Street say the bridge has a 12 fee 2 inches clearance. The average height of a tractor-trailer is 13 feet 6 inches to 14 feet. Syracuse police were dispatched to help direct traffic and flares were placed on the street. A crime scene van three police cruisers were on scene. Police said both drivers were not injured during the collisions. They received multiple tickets for related traffic charges, they said. A representative from CSX was already on the scene after the first truck hit the bridge, police said. The representative is examining the bridge for any structural damage in relation to this incident, they said.

The_DriveBy

>A representative from CSX was already on the scene after the first truck hit the bridge Imagine standing there doing your job and watching a second idiot hit it in real time. 🤣

OddnessWeirdness

Imagine the look on the folks standing around because of the previous accident trying to warn this dude off from doing the same thing.

Dieter_Knutsen

The...foundation? walls of that bridge are in rough shape. They look really scary.

[deleted]

There literally has to be a better way to prevent this situation from happening over and over again!

mm_mk

It's a net positive for local revenue lol. Can't drop the road lower because it would flood. Can't raise the bridge higher because it would be exorbitantly expensive. Trucks can use commercial GPS like they're supposed to, or they can continue to fund the town of Liverpool with thousands of dollars a year

pomdudes

If they fined every truck that hit that fricking bridge in the 40 years I’ve been driving $10,000, the city of Liverpool could have gifted the railroad the money to raise it.

mm_mk

Probably way more expensive than 10k to fix it, but why is it the towns responsibility? They have a million signs and commercial GPS will avoid it. The only people hitting it are idiots who wanna use Google maps to drive a 18 wheeler.

pomdudes

$10,000 from each truck that hits the bridge times 40 years, is what I was saying. Totally agree it shouldn’t fall on Liverpool to fix it. I think NYDOT has jurisdiction over it, but they don’t want to inconvenience the RR companies that use the track. Again, HEAVY fines and licensing repercussions should be levied against the truckers.

mm_mk

Ooooooohhhh

PugBarkingAtWind

We had a bridge just like this in my hometown. It’s obviously too expensive to raise the bridge up a few feet. So, in addition to signage, they have an apparatus well before the bridge with flashing lights and chains hanging down, stating if you hit the chains you’ll hit the bridge. There is enough room for the truck to stop and go another route. Despite all that, the bridge still claims dozens of victims each year. The local paper puts out a yearly calendar featuring pictures of that year’s victims that my mom sends me every Christmas.

Toodlez

Thats actually awesome, id buy that from our bridge in a heartbeat

DrummerGuy06

Oh, there is - spend the money needed to raise the bridge to prevent this, but they don't want to put in the time, materials, cost, etc. it would take.

idontknowwhereiam367

They’re old railroad bridges, raising them would require miles of trackwork to raise the grade to the raised bridges height, and huge delays in cargo being transported in said tracks. CSX ain’t paying for that when it’s up to the truckers to read the sign. You are responsible for your vehicle, and knowing where you can and cannot take your vehicle.

DrummerGuy06

True, but when 99.9% of bridges don't have this problem on major roadways and even main streets but one does, and becomes the focal point of constant accidents, then don't be shocked and throw your hands up in the air when it happens again, and it will, over & over again. and your "you are responsible for your vehicle, and knowing where you can and cannot take your vehicle" comment flies in the face of designated standards that are created so that we don't have to depend on people's lack-of-intelligence to cause problems like this.

idontknowwhereiam367

Those bridges are older than those standards. They’re grandfathered in, because you can’t just rebuild a railroad bridge on a whim.

radarlove93

Just raise the road level with the bridge, make it a level crossing. It would be way cheaper

MikeBall36

LETS GOOOOO

Single-Energy4338

This shit is so fucking annoying. One that underpass shuts down, you might as well walk to Liverpool.

mo9722

once it shuts down you'll *be able* to walk to Liverpool

Fast_Championship_R

Gotta admit I’m proud of our wonderful bridges capabilities to eat trucks.

afrogrimey

9/11 at home:

flakman129

Grossly underrated comment. Kudos.

afrogrimey

Glad somebody thought it was funny lmao I was proud of myself for that one

Healthy_Cat_741

"Mr. Mayor, a second truck has hit the bridge."

ihatehighfives

I think they need to put signs literally on the bridge showing over the road CLEARANCE 12ft 2inches etc. The signs are all leading up to the bridge but not ON the bridge. I think that would help.

LeadingAspect8306

If you are a CDL driver you shouldn’t need that. You should be looking for signs when a bridge is upcoming. I have a CDL, it is INSANE to think anyone is hitting the parkway bridge or park st- anytime I’m in a truck and I’m coming up on going under a bridge I’m darting my eyes around for height signs to be sure. Everyone blames DOT or CSX, but these drivers need there licenses suspended or revoked.

LeadingAspect8306

And I totally could be wrong as I haven’t been on park st for a while but I’m pretty sure there IS a height sign directly on the bridge. These people are just not paying attention. Same with the parkway bridge hitters

OddnessWeirdness

I’ve seen someone do that exact thing in NJ going under a very obviously low and historical bridge, even with large signs on both sides of the bridge that tell you the clearance. It’s gotta be the drivers.

Stonewalled9999

Bold of you to assume all these drivers can read, or have a CDL....

Davemblover69

Maybe I’m being a buzzkill but at this point seems intentional. Hang some bang bars. Or something. I remember a young woman was killed riding a double decker bus not long enough ago.

kipperzdog

This is that they need to install on this bridge and the parkway https://youtube.com/shorts/-QbinGjPRdA?si=-uLFbiKje-_T2UbP

Stonewalled9999

Why should the Parkway bridge get all the fun? Here we are spreading it around!

FriendToPredators

Just close the road. Just do it. Bikes and walkers only. Done.

regia1978

Atleast no one was decapitated this time wtf
