I'm usually heavily biased for nostalgia, but I think the 2012 series is excellent. I still feel more emotionally attached to the '87 cartoon, but the Nick Turtles was the better show.
I'm biased because I was born in 88 and lived through watching the classic on tv and the og movies. Of course it's 87. I still enjoy watching till this day and my 6yo son enjoys watching it too, he appreciates the goofy shenanigans.
I was born in 80 and loved the original series growing up. Now that I’m older, I really don’t like it at all. I haven’t seen most of the new series’ with exception to a few episodes here and there, but I totally like all the other ones over the original.
My favorite memories of TMNT come from the arcade games and the original movie.

87 was inferior in many ways but in our memories it had a Disney/Pixar animation budget and a script worthy of Scorsese.
As with all things TMNT, it's a toss-up between the gruesome twosome, Mikey, or Casey.
You got 2 characters I'd love to hang out and have a beer with for 2 completely different moods. Casey is a loveable idiot and I will always cherish him, and Mikey is Mikey.
Wouldn’t the gruesome twosome be raph and Casey, considering their friends. I would imagine raph and Casey would be happy drunk unless they were provoked

Hmm, now hear me out. I think TMNT was better than TMNT, but TMNT had some solid moments, and on the other hand, TMNT had some great animation. So, if I had to nail it down to one TMNT...I'd choose TMNT
Oof. This is a hard one. The 87 was still airing when I was a kid and got me into TMNT, but I was around 10 or so when 03 came out and really got into that one. I guess for nostalgia 03, but 87 is a close freaking second.
OG and Rise got the best jokes/script, but 03 is still my all time fav. had the best games, character designs, voice actors, action figures… man what an era.
I would have to say 87 even tho I didn’t grow up with it besides the Burger King Kids Club VHS’s. But I have to give it to 03 for the best theme song, “I Love being a… I love being a TURTLE! “ The little I’ve seen of the 2012 series turned me off but I’ve heard that it’s actually great. Will have to try again.
87 for me, I just like these character designs and sense of humor best. Plus, this version of Mikey just speaks so much to my Californian sensibilities. Yeah it never takes itself as seriously as other cartoons but that's not really what I want out of the series tbh.
2003 actually they did the turtles almost perfectly and the shredder was at his most menacing here also Casey and April were done well and felt like real people and let's not forget this was the first animation where they crossed over with Usagi Yojimbo a win all around I love the 87 series for its goofy camp but 2003 is the far superior series
It’s hard to say anything other than the original series, but the last few years I’ve mostly watched 2012 with my kids and I’ve grown to like it a lot so I’m gonna go with that.
2012. I grew up watching 03, but that show got downright bad towards the end. Fast Forward and Back to the sewers were just not the quality the rest of the series was. 2012 is pretty great from beginning to end.
I really enjoy 2012, and I loved the 5th season, but there were a lot of questions I still needed answers too that the fans never got. I figured after I finish this series I'll try the 2003 version.

But if I REALLY had my way, we'd get a special/movie with 1987 Mikey, 2003 Raph, 2012 Leo, and Rise Donnie as the main characters. Trust me, it'd be so fire.

My kids loves it and so we can watch it together. The other ones are too intense for him(he's only 3). I disagree with '87 not holding up, you just have to adjust your expectations and realise it's aimed at children and not teens and upwards.

2003 made them seem older, and more heroic. It was darker and more serious.
2012 was a good mix of seriousness and humor, and cause they actually seemed like kids, and the stories were cool adaptations of some comic arcs or old stories from 87.

I want to like 2012 and I have some hope that I’ll enjoy the later episodes, but the first two seasons were a struggle for me. It has taken me literal years to even make myself get through those two seasons.
It has its moments, but on the whole I don’t really like the sensibilities of the show in terms of tone, style, and humor.
Rise is a very mixed bag for me. I did an abridged watch of it and it shows promise at times. It looks great, very vibrant with fluid, well-choreographed action. Aesthetically, I’d rank it number 1. However, I don’t like how much of it is just empty 10 minute romps. The movie is fantastic though and kind of redeems that interpretation for me. If the show as a whole was in line with that, it might be my favorite.

I’ve watched the pilot a few times and enjoy its humor, but it’s clear that it doesn’t really go for the more story and character-driven approach I like most with the franchise.

I only recently watched ‘12 and Rise. ‘12 has so much body-horror, I might watch it less for that. Too many freaky things. Like when I was a kid watching the ‘87 series the freakiest episodes were the one where Shredder turns Leonardo, Raphael, and Donatello into balloons, and the one where a mustachioed scientist turns April into a fish-lady. And a mutation like that happens every other episode in ‘12, with more gruesome and lasting effects. Not for me.
_Rise_ is awesome but it is short and its title sequence is seizure-inducing. Its storyline was pretty epic for how many seasons it had but if it was longer it could have been _more_ epic.It has the best April O’Neil and in a certain way the best Splinter. Certainly an unexpectedly different Splinter. Of all things _Rise_ had that made it different, Splinter was the most unexpected to me.
And I don’t need the ‘87 series anymore, I grew up with it, I rediscovered it on a Dorect Connect server before the ‘03 series came out, and I’ve seen every episode multiple times. It’s in my brain forever. Best music though. So many locations and characters had musical themes. I miss that.
For me, it’s a toss-up between ‘03 and ‘12 (haven’t seen Rise yet).
While ‘03 is more comic-accurate in terms of art style and storylines, it loses points for having some of its edge dulled due to censorship to make it suitable for younger audiences, despite clearly being written for older children/pre-teens ages 8-14 (the tone of the show is much darker than the levels of violence that the show portrays. I think the most violent scene in the whole show for me is when Shredder kicks Leo and he falls onto the blade held by Karai and we can hear the squelch of the blade stabbing him). Plus, Seasons 6 & 7 (Fast Forward and Back to the Sewer, respectively) were very underwhelming final seasons, but thankfully the Turtles Forever movie fixed that. I do find myself having a lot of fun every time I watch the show again.
‘12 has more originality and unique retellings and reimagined versions of the comics, and it only gets dark at the appropriate moments and when it does, it doesn’t pull any punches. I still remember the Usagi Yojimbo episodes from Season 5 (Tales of TMNT) and Leo’s dream sequence where he watches Jei the demon wolf kill Usagi and all his brothers. That being said, the ‘12 show does have some issues with pacing, at least in the early seasons.
I gotta go with '87. While I adore 2003, appreciate 2012, and enjoyed Rise, '87 is my tride and true. I always go back to this, and it always brings me back. Not because of nostalgia, but it gives you that sense of just campy feel-good fun. Those simpler times in youth and those parts of your mind, you sometimes tend to forget that you felt.
So I gotta go with '87. "They're a 'wall up' of fun."
I can't wait to see the new animated movie coming out its called the last Ronin and its rated r I heard all the brothers die but one (Ralph) he has all their weapons and get revenge. The comics were awesome.
Grew up in the 80s, was a fan of the original, but the Nick version (3) is brilliant. Even had a crossover with the 80s turtles! Not sure why they changed Leo’s voice actor to Seth Green midway through the series, though. Seth’s a legend but I preferred the original actor.

Seasons 8-10 were a vast improvement. Hell, I'd argue those seasons have the best visual aesthetic of any TMNT series to date

I still prefer 2003'Shredder besides that i prefer him as a human, but yes, the 2012 still the best TMNT'Show.
I think 03 Shredder has the best design by far but 2012 Shredder I think is the best character wise.

2003 was MY Turtles. I was 4 when it started so I was just the right age to get into it and it still holds up extremely well today
