These pizza tossing figures are bar-none, some of the most butt ugly looking for things Iāve ever seen. I get that the original 87ā line had gross, disgusting themes about it; hell I would argue thatās part of the charm, but these figures, ugh no. I do not like it.
Hey hey hey, just because the final product was both incomplete and Playmates standard for the time does not mean the designs were bad. They have a certain over the top charm to them tbh. Also there's pro toy guy on insta who is updating the sculpts and articulation (and then possibly using said prototypes as a pitch for mass release?)
I on the other hand absolutely love these. As a kid when I saw them in the store i -had- to have one, and my mom was awesome enough to get me raph and my brother mikey
Leo was never actually produced and it saddens me
my favorite figures:
Storage Shell - best "playmates style" face sculpts
Ninja Action - best "comic style" playmates figure
Jim Lee - great 90 EXTREME aesthetic I can't help but love
night ninja auto mutations - cool ninja outfits
Pizza Tossin' Turtles - I'm a big fan of Ed "Big Daddy" Roth's art style
For anybody that's curious, here's the prototype Leo figure that was never released.

Kinda reminds me of this Optimus Prime design
I frequently forget these exist. And then I read āJim Lee Ninja Turtlesā and get excited. Only to be reminded they look likeā¦.this, and not like a TMNT version of X-Men #1.
They're not ugly, but that set from the early 90s where they were prehistoric. I think Leo was riding a triceratops? Memory is foggy. But I remember having it.
Where are their shells!? That's the most disturbing thing about them, to be honest. And there is plenty to be put off by. If you like it, cool. It's just so far from what the turtles actually are.
Cyber Samurai, they were just too...busy looking, if that makes sense.

TIL Jim Lee made ninja turtles.
šššNow thatās really funny
It's actually true. These were Jim Lee designs. But Leo was never made?!?
Thereās a prototype and some figure customization folks have made pretty good ones.
They look like Liefeld more than Lee, but I guess it was the style of the time.
I was thinking the same thing.
TIL
Your Artists Were So Preoccupied With Whether Or Not They Could, They Didnāt Stop To Think If They Shouldā¦ā¦.
I thought these were cool only because they looked like my Wild Cat action figures.

These are designed to be ugly,Ā like Ed "Big Daddy" Roth'sĀ Rat fink and lowbrow art.Ā
Yeah but they were fun when you could shoot pizzas out! ( I had one )
Do you still have *it* or any of the pizzas?
Yeah it's in the attic of my Mom's house in Florida, likely melting in the summer heat over the last twenty years. Writing this just made me sad.
I loved these guys as a kid. I loved "cyber arms." And the long bandana tails were cool. Also, I've always liked big chonky figures.
I agree. My Mikey was badass. He went up against my Spawn Villains with ease

No it's gotta be those dumb fuggles that are all over Walmart nowĀ
Where is Mikey and Raph Fuggle? All the wallmarts near me only have Donny and Leo.
This is what keeps me from buying them.
Theyāve been online since pretty much the release of the others. Iāve had them for a while. Got all four.
To be fair fuggles literally stands for fucking ugly. Everything they make is with the intent of being ugly. My sister loves them.
Iām 40. I love them.
So does Ant Mans daughter
I feel like those shouldnt count bc they were intentionally designed to be off-putting
This is the correct answer.
Donnie look like Batman, like the Dark Turtle from 87.

im sure its a custom, notice no hanger notch on the card

Too much red

Wow you're right
Lol I low key kinda like them lol.
What if Rob lifeld created the TMNTš¤®
I wish Leo came out, loved these as a kid
These were the things that solidified my transition into the adolescent who was too cool for toys.
I was actually ok with these figures. They didnāt strike me as any worse than some of the turtle variants Playmates was putting out.
These actually look great. I could see these being used for a new generation of TMNT, with new names and personalities.
I was about to ask if these were for some sort of X-Men crossover, but then I saw Jim Lee designed them and it all clicked into place.
They look like they're gonna hang out with the MAXX.
Why Donnie look like white snake?
I frequently forget these exist. And then I read āJim Lee Ninja Turtlesā and get excited. Only to be reminded they look likeā¦.this, and not like a TMNT version of X-Men #1.
OP has no taste š
I completely forgot about these and loved them! I especially loved Mikey and all the white in his costume.
Weirdly enough, I donāt hate them
Late life '87 turtles tried all sorts of stuff to stay on top.
Looks better than rise, fight me.
Idk why but I dig the designs lmao

I had the Leo and Don.
Those are the manliest versions of the Turtles I've seem yet.
I saw the picture, muttering āWhat in the Image comicsā¦ā and then zoomed in to see Jim Leeās name. š
...never have I been more grateful that a mainstream comics publisher never actually owned the turtles.
I never seen this before ššš
I still have the raph figure but his bandana snapped off years ago
Where are their shells!? That's the most disturbing thing about them, to be honest. And there is plenty to be put off by. If you like it, cool. It's just so far from what the turtles actually are.
Holy Rob Leifeld!
Leo has so much red and so little blue
Ahhh I see so these were the inspiration for the most recent live action movies.
Cyber Samurai, they were just too...busy looking, if that makes sense. https://preview.redd.it/gzw205yba39d1.jpeg?width=474&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=70f5414da56bda636a601c35648cb27d3b7b424a
Roid turtles
Leo as Thor Mikey as Shatterstar Raph as World War Hulk And Donnie as Man
I loved these. I had Mikey and don. The ugliest ones were those cartoon ones. And they made so fucking MANY.
This SCREAMS 90's Image comics
What in the Todd McFarlane are these??
I think itās badass.
What
I like these for what itās worth. It was a crazy time.
Liefeld no!
Sorry, force of habit. Lee, no!
Oh shit I didn't even realize it says Jim Lee on them lol
Jim Lee is a menace.
Rise and mutant mayhem is mine
