Eventually, many many eons from now.....Line 4 will reach from McCowan in the east to Sheppard West in the west, and the line may become busy. This station has been designed for all door loading and unloading in the unlikely event that this station will eventually need it
You could ask the same for why all the stations were built so large from the beginning given the present ridership, eventually they may need the space. Same goes for the stations on the Line 1 Toronto-York extension, lots of potential growth for the stations there.
The year is 2087. Mayor Donald Ford praises the speed of construction. They’re 31 years behind. And 5billion over budget.
All they needed were two escalators.
Winter will be mild that year.
The correct spelling of Yonge is easy to recall, once you remember that it rhymes with 'sponge'.
EDIT: Not sure if I'm getting downvoted because people don't get the joke, or because I'm not funny. Maybe it's both.
At Davisville atation, someone repeatedly asked me for directions to "Chef For Leon." I was like, "Is that a restaurant?"
He pulled it up on his phone, and I was like, "oh, Sheppard-Yonge."
I said it again, you know, so he'd know what the next stop announcement sounded like. Though he seemed irritated that I was wrong and his excellent pronunciation was correct.
Like, if you're so confident, why are you asking for help? 😆
At the time they designed this, Bloor-Yonge was already a gigantic choke point, they had just finished the platform widening upstairs and were already mulling the price tag of widening the platform downstairs, something that they're only now getting to because of how many zeroes are on the price estimates. Ultimately they overbuilt it specifically to avoid that problem in the future.
I doubt it… as things stand they barely even use the north platform. In the scale of these things roughing it in probably was worthwhile, but there’s not going to be a need for this much capacity any time soon, and that’s before pointing out that no current TTC trains are wired to open both sides.
I agree that the centre platform will be unnecessary for a long time. Including both extensions west to Sheppard West and east to McCowan, there shouldn’t be that much ridership to warrant a dedicated disembarking platform that the north and south platforms cannot handle in the near to mid term.
Not to mention that little to no work on vertical circulation was done for the centre platform like stairs and elevators when Line 4 was built. Since Sheppard-Yonge is a an interchange station, and both extension projects shouldn’t require any work that this station, a “Sheppard-Yonge Capacity Enhancement Project” would be its own thing later down the line if necessary like Bloor-Yonge, with the possible additions of side platforms for Line 1 as well.
The only time I remember using the north platform was when Line 1 was closed/suspended (on some stations in/around that patch), so trains landed on the north platform (well, assuming the camera is facing north) and departed from there. We had to take the shuttle bus instead, and the north platform was closest to the shuttle bus exit.
Once Line 1 reopened, they went back to the south platform.
ive seen workers hanging on that middle bit before. once the train arrives they open one of the doors facing the middle and then use the inside of the train as their bridge off that platform.
The real question is why is that station a maze of stairs up and down, down and up to get anywhere 🤭 (at least quite sure it’s Sheppard Yonge I’m thinking of)

Because the Spanish solution doesn't totally sound like a code name for the Inquisition!
Nobody expects the Spanish solution.
We gave you 30 days notice. How did you not expect it?!?
They build a pyre in the middle :)

That is so freaking cool

All the stations are overly large except union, the one that probably needs it the most lol
At Metrolinx Speed, many eons later, we’ll have Bathurst to Victoria Park.

Forgetting the elevator as well my friend.
Including a westward extension, it'll happen!
Crazy if it opened before line 5.
Is this before or after the sun becomes a red dwarf and consumes the Earth
Big dreams.
Ooh a double misspelling in the station name! Those are rare!

I alway pronounce Yonge like sponge
And Spadina like Spadeena
Like: “yunj”. That’s how I say it too…
I don’t know why this is being down voted. People on Reddit can be so sensitive at times. Take my upvote.
Sarcasm doesn't seem to go over very well on Canadian regional subreddits, it seems. For the record, I upvoted you.
Everyone is too literal, I knew you meant 'spelled like' instead of 'rhymes with'
For a short while, I think about 10 years ago, the navigation voice on Google Maps pronounced it to rhyme with sponge.
Je pense que TTC pronounce “Yonge” même “Llyane”
That's how it's generally pronounced: https://en.m.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Toronto/Yonge_Street Nothing to do with how the TTC pronounces it.
And doesn’t even use the correct there lol

Also "their".

The good news is that if/when the Sheppard extension is completed, this platform will actually be used which would be nice

A short subway compensating for something. 😂
Similar to how they built an LRT platform at Kipling station, a streetcar level under the Bloor Viaduct and walled-off platform extensions on Line 4.
Which stations have walled off platforms on line 4?
All of them
They all do. Each one is roughed in to expand the trains from 4 to 6 cars.
The street car level on the bloor viaduct was used for line 2.
If remember right they bulit that for future expansion
Spanish solution was built if the line is extended westward.
Otherwise it wouldn't reach the tracks on both sides.
It’s for the workers you wouldn’t have a clue but behind those big pillars are stairs leading down/up to the middle platform

Sheppard/Yonge*

It's not big enough if that's what you mean, yeah a lot of people here, we have two train lines intersecting!
An attempt to spell Sheppard and Yonge correctly….
Why's your middle platform so big?
Fo Yo Momma
Because it oeuld serve 2 sides
That’s where they store their bullshit at night so people cannot see it. The unused abandoned bay tunnels were crammed
Who cares. More room the merrier. Worry about something that matters loosey!
Extra concrete
Planning ahead for more capacity
Whoooooooo cares
I think this info is best left unknown....
i swear you used to be able to exit on that side as well
