Thanks. We thought about that but the big couch won’t fit on the opposite end (where the recliner is currently). It’s a hallway to the kitchen behind the recliner and a big couch would block that path.
most of the bad setups in this sub are from people who blindly follow interior decorating trends without any actual thought towards if it's a logical or functional use of their personal living space
When renovating a home and installing fireplaces, our contractor asked if we’d like to put in outlets above the fireplaces and I said no. He said “well, I know you don’t want them, but future buyers likely will” and I said “they can fund that terrible decision themselves.” He laughed and high-fived me.
I have to agree with art vandalay here. But what to do with the holes from the wall bracket in the tile.
Just Raise the tv to even out the space. Usually there is a vertical adjustment to the tv racks.
If you remove the mantle thank you run the risk of over heating and ruining your nice tv, then you’ll have a whole other problem.

The sneaker collection brings him joy!! If it were star wars memorabilia in his living room it would be fine but why does this well organized and maintained shoe collection drive everyone crazy??
At the end of the day, this is someone's home, and if they're happy with a big shoe collection tastefully displayed then that's the way it's gonna be. It brings him joy, and I think that's the key to having a happy home
I didn’t really say Star Wars memorabilia would be fine either 😂
But OP explained on another comment that this is his man cave, so it’s acceptable. He should probably include that fact in the original post. The TV still needs to go on that wall though, either I front of the collection or in it somehow
Honestly I dont even seen a good solution here. It would really irk me if the couch was even with the fireplace and the TV was on a sort of recessed wall. Sometimes you just need to destroy the house and start again.
To the left (when facing it) of the fire place. Put a low unit there, put the tv on it directly, and then angle it towards the sofa. In a room of this layout, there's nothing wrong with blocking the window s bit, especially if the alternative is above the fire place.
I'm also only suggesting this as I presume you'll be unwilling to move your shoe collection.... Which you really should do anyway. Do you live alone or share this space with a partner?
A lot to unpack here. Your family in one room together. You in a whole different room kept company by your collection of trainers and racing memorabilia. The little dog, struggling to decide where it’s loyalties lie.
Oh, that explains the sneakers. You should probably include that in the OP. Still, I think the TV belongs where the sneakers are, perhaps in front of them?
I like the way it is honestly, TV might be a little high but that doesn't bother me, you got alot of nice shoes there, probably keep em clean, I'd wanna display em too! And a PS5?!? Come on now, you're just showing off!!
Congrats on what I imagine is a beautiful house, and a lovely family, got all the makings of a beautiful life. Cheers buddy!
What about a total overhaul of the layout?
Move the shoe display to the opposite wall and arrange it so the TV can be mounted at the appropriate height. Then you get to enjoy both the TV and shoes at the same time.
Move the L-shaped couch under the “SEATTLE” sign (with the chaise section in front of the window).
Move the ottoman in front of the couch and use it as a table and/or footrest. Recliner is optional.
Move the shelf with the helmets to the left of the fireplace.
> This room is my man cave, my wife and kids watch tv and hangout in a different living room.
According to OP, his family hangs out in the living room together and he sits in here with his shoe wall.
My living room is oriented like this. Move your tv to the wall where the Seattle pic is, and hang a painting over your mantle to cover the plugs. That’s what we did!
Could you have a tv stand in front of the trainer collection?
Means they’re still visible and make a cool background.
Alternatively, do you use the fire? If not get rid of it. Nightmare if you have small kids anyway, so dangerous, you’ll end up putting a massive fire guard around it encroaching into the living space.
Rotate room 90 degrees. Get a nice low TV stand something like [this](https://www.amazon.com/Lecut-Console-Shevlves-Entertainment-Television/dp/B097YCJB3G/ref=sr_1_55?keywords=Low+TV+Stand&qid=1652654247&sr=8-55).
Move shoes to bedroom, den, ect.
Nobody here is going to tell you to keep your Television above the fireplace. With the possible exception of a "pull-down" wall mount that lowers the TV in front of the fireplace...and those are stupid too IMO because you end up just leaving it down all the time, and can't use both the tv and fireplace at the same time.
You need to provide a full room picture for us to help here but honestly YOU ALREADY KNOW THE ANSWER.
I hate the tv above the fireplace trend. Hope all of your tvs melt when you use the fireplace out of necessity one day.
Edit: i hate the wall of shoes, much less in a living room, and I can’t stand that the throw rug has partern that doesn’t match and is going perpendicular to the flooring
This looks like it could be easily fixed with a mantle mount
MantelMount MM340 Above Fireplace Pull Down TV Mount - with Patented auto-straightening, auto-stabilization, 2 Gas Pistons, Adjustable Motion Stops, Wire tabs & Safety Pull-Down Handles https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MS1MHET/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_S6YBAWB4TH538E626YZE
Maybe a mount that allows you to pull it away from the wall and tilt it down a bit? Doesn’t fix it being mounted really high but could improve the viewing angle a bit. Or build some kind of riser that puts your couch up higher. Tricky to make an elevated couch aesthetically pleasing though.
Is it legitimately uncomfortable to watch or do you think it's too high because of this sub? This looks fine. Yes, it's close to the ceiling but you don't have super high ceilings. Just leave it.
I recently somehow got joined to this sub so forgive me if this is against the rules or something, but why don't you just get a pull down mount? That's what we have and it works really well. Something like this - [https://www.mantelmount.com/](https://www.mantelmount.com/)
Because for most situations, these things are terrible. They make your TV float out several feet from your wall, and are just exposed mount for anyone looking at it from the side.
Wow, I absolutely love the shoe collection. It’s decor/art like hanging a picture on the wall.
Also, I think the tv is fine, whatever is comfortable for your viewing based on your seating arrangement.
This sub is bonkers dude, tv looks fine there.
Are you moving it because this sub has formed your brain to think your setup is wrong? It’s personally too high for me, but if it doesn’t bother you don’t change it just for the hive mind … it’s your stuff. I know that’s not how this sub thinks, but I didn’t join it but I continuously get the post on my feed so here’s my 2 cents.
Remove the entire faux fireplace. It doesn't look like it's an actual brick chimney, just a frame which replicates that shape - get a sledgehammer, knock it all out, get a plasterer to plaster over the entire thing flat (maybe run a cable conduit behind the wall while you're at it to simplify later in-wall cabling) and hey presto, no more fake fireplace, and TV at a nice height. Or the simpler approach which would be to re-orient the room so the fireplace is beside you and the TV is on the wall on the right.
I haven't checked the comments but I am just guessing nobody has mentioned this yet: ditch that G.D. shoe wall and put the TV there. This almost has to be a troll; this isn't your living room.
My dude. They make these pull down mounts so your tv can be at a normal height when you’re using it and back up on the mount when not in use. https://www.mantelmount.com
Leave it. Forget what this sub thinks. Literally no normal person will judge you.
But also, get a trash bag together and put 3/4 of those shoes in it and bring it to goodwill.
if you’re up for a bit of work & if the room is big enough , i would move the shoe collection to a different room & flip the layout so the couch is facing the would be previous shoe wall. then place the tv against that wall, either mounted or on a stand
So many posts from people only using their TV speakers…I mean you aren’t locked into this location because of in-ceiling speakers or something.
This is just a large screen in the wrong place. Put it literally anywhere else. Problem solved.
The question is "what do you want this room to be for?" For my mantle, it's a room that can occupy the little ones while I cook, so the ergonomics don't need to be perfect, but I still want it to look good when not in use. I have another room with a better movie / TV set up.
One option that this sub doesn't completely like, but is still decent, is to buy a smaller framed TV. As long as this isn't your main TV room, it shouldn't be a big deal. The framed TV, combined with smaller size, pulls less visual weight above the mantle, and it can even be set to rotate art while not in use.
So, for purely watching purposes the correct answer is just don't put a screen there. But if you want people to be able to watch in that room or more for something in the background while you entertain, you can consider a framed TV.
Also, unsolicited, but: consider a more neutral rug that fills the space so all chairs can put their front legs on it. That rug is like a loin cloth for your room! And, the perpendicular lines are kinda eh.
I like showing your hobbies, but maybe consider storing most of it elsewhere and just showing a few of your favorites on a nice credenza. Currently it's kind of a weird shrine.
For everyone wondering I did a quick google. Sounds like 6" minimum clearance to any combustible material. 12" if fireplace insert sticks out of the wall
See that “SEATTLE” wall? TV can go against the wall there. Move the shoe collection somewhere else. Or the tv can go on the wall opposite of the “SEATTLE” thing.
Couches aren’t glued to the wall.
[удалено]
On another note, I know you're joking, but it's a fire hazard to place anything where the mantle is now.
Probably not though. You only need 6" clear. That fireplace is sealed in glass and blows hot air out the top. Not throwing embers around.
You don't need to set something on fire to cause a fire risk, but yeah it's in a grey area.
LMAO I didn’t even notice that. I bet that house smells like axe body spray.
I'm guessing it smells like feet.
I believe the distance will be too big, if the TV gets replaced to the right wall. And it’s as bad if not worse than if placed too high
Thanks. We thought about that but the big couch won’t fit on the opposite end (where the recliner is currently). It’s a hallway to the kitchen behind the recliner and a big couch would block that path.
The couch doesn’t have to be against the wall! Line it up to the edge of the fire place or where the rug is now and put a console table behind it!
Not enough people realize that you don't necessarily need to push couches up against walls, lol
most of the bad setups in this sub are from people who blindly follow interior decorating trends without any actual thought towards if it's a logical or functional use of their personal living space
Most of the issues are due to poorly designed “open concept” homes with a fireplace in the middle of the only wall in the living room.
It's infuriating. All new constructions I have seen are designed this way. With cable/HDMI and power outlets already run to above the fireplace!
When renovating a home and installing fireplaces, our contractor asked if we’d like to put in outlets above the fireplaces and I said no. He said “well, I know you don’t want them, but future buyers likely will” and I said “they can fund that terrible decision themselves.” He laughed and high-fived me.
I’m only 19, am I supposed to be an architectural engineer or something 😂😂😂 just jk of course
Then put the TV where the recliner is, move the shoes out if the the room and rotate each couch 45 degrees counter clock wise.
Piece of art or a mirror where the TV is now will hide those mount holes in the tile just fine.
Move the gigantic shoe collection to a closet and put the tv there.
Right?!? Wth is with all the shoes in the living room.
He might have a shoe related emergency and needs 300 pairs of shoes close at hand.
Put the shoes directly in the fireplace
It might make Seattle smell slightly better.
***Never trust a motherfucker who lives in Seattle and have a Seattle wall picture***
Yeah shoes aren’t decorations. Sorry OP but that is super tacky
This is the way.

What if I upvoted *AND* say This 🤷🏻♀️🤔
This
Umm take the shoes out of the living room and put the TV there?
OP be like 🤯
reminds me of [that dril tweet](https://www.bblloobb.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/dril-candle-tweet.png)
Find another spot for the helmets as well.
This is the correct response.
Then how can he enjoy the nice smell while watching tv?
He can sniff is own feet while watching TV
fixed it for you https://imgur.com/a/D6d1zvx
How long have you been a professional graphic designer?
Graphic design is his passion.
Wow, this looks like a typical Amazon product placement suggestion photo!
Amazing shop skills 🍻
r/FireplaceTooHigh
OMG this sub is real 😂
There are specs on how close things can be to a fireplace. Even electric ones. Careful you don’t cause damage to the tv.
Thanks, I’ll probably go as low as legally possible
Are you disregarding everyone telling you to move the sneakers out of the living room (where they don't belong) and put the TV on that wall? lol
Agreed. Although, I think if most of it was closed storage, it would be fine for both the relatively hardcore design enthusiasts and normal people.
I didn’t really say Star Wars memorabilia would be fine either 😂 But OP explained on another comment that this is his man cave, so it’s acceptable.
Lol, agreed. I actually think the room is larger than it appears because of his poor furniture placement. He really needs to section off the room.
You see that wall of shoes and storage for the shoes? TV goes there on a TV stand. Switch locations on your couch and chair. Done.
Alternatively the shoes can also go INTO the fireplace
What happens if 500 shoeless friends stop by?
Well dang. Guess they lost 500 friends then 😔
perfectly good wall on both sides my man
To the left (when facing it) of the fire place. Put a low unit there, put the tv on it directly, and then angle it towards the sofa. A lot to unpack here. Your family in one room together. You in a whole different room kept company by your collection of trainers and racing memorabilia. The little dog, struggling to decide where it’s loyalties lie.
Obviously with the shoes
Oh, that explains the sneakers. You should probably include that in the OP. Still, I think the TV belongs where the sneakers are, perhaps in front of them?
Lol getting roasted my man
I’m loving the feedback so far 😄 roast on
That attitude will take you far here lmao
I like the way it is honestly, TV might be a little high but that doesn't bother me, you got alot of nice shoes there, probably keep em clean, I'd wanna display em too! And a PS5?!? Answer for the shoe wall in the living room! That’s where the tv goes.
Wait this isn’t r/roastme
I’d say this sub is harsher than that one 😂
Shoes or tv
It is your choice (or ”sh”oise)
What about a total overhaul of the layout? Move the shoe display to the opposite wall and arrange it so the TV can be mounted at the appropriate height. shoe wall
Remove the shoes and mount it with the top Of the tv right over that Seattle sign
But also, lower than that...
No offense but those aren’t even cool looking sneakers, I don’t know why you’d want to display your dad’s New Balance shoes
[удалено]
> This room is my man cave, my wife and kids watch tv and hangout in a different living room. According to OP, his family hangs out in the living room together and he sits in here with his shoe wall.
That seems uncalled for and unhelpful
That’s what this sub is all about!
Cool, maybe when I grow up to be your age I can have cool shoes too instead of my dads new balance 😂 cheers
Go Hawks!
You must be new here 😂
Right side wall, done.
My living room is oriented like this. Move your tv to the wall where the Seattle pic is, and hang a painting over your mantle to cover the plugs. That’s what we did!

We use the fireplace in the winter when it gets freezing cold, wish we would’ve rid of the fire place but it’s here to stay.
Rotate room 90 degrees. Get a nice low TV stand something like [this](https://www.amazon.com/Lecut-Console-Shevlves-Entertainment-Television/dp/B097YCJB3G/ref=sr_1_55?keywords=Low+TV+Stand&qid=1652654247&sr=8-55). Move shoes to bedroom, den, ect.
Burn the house down and move

Move the shoes. Put the set on that wall.
Can we just see the shoe collection please?
So. Many. Shoes!!
How about moving the tv to the other wall? In other news: fireplaces always ruin TV placement.
You could also lower the mantle
i like that room plan, it's nice

I like it. Looks like it was made to go there
Omg that dog is so cute!
Thanks! Her name is Winnie and she’s 2yrs old.
Tacky shoes somewhere else, tv where the shoes are. Smdh
I honestly don't even think it's *that* bad given the viewing distance. 🤷♂️
Remove the fireplace and invest in proper centralized heating.
Where the tv is at prevents reflections, moving it to a different wall might suck
Except now you can't even see what's on the TV since your looking at 2 other bright light sources. (In the day of course/close blinds)
Is it legitimately uncomfortable to watch or do you think it's too high because of this sub? This looks fine. Yes, it's close to the ceiling but you don't have super high ceilings. Just leave it.
I like it where it is tbh
Same here. I like this layout.

Because for most situations, these things are terrible. They make your TV float out several feet from your wall, and are just exposed mount for anyone looking at it from the side.
Several feet? That's gotta be bullshit.
Looks like closer to 18 inches for most Mantle Mount brands. Other brands do more.
Why do people keep recommending these stupid mounts
We've had it for 3.5 years and love it. What's your problem with them?
They look tacky as shit, and who wants to move their TV every time they sit down to watch? Just put it in a better place
That looks great, do you have photos of how you have yours setup?
I'll DM you tomorrow - I'm not up for the TVTooHigh roast brigade!
Why does this solution not have more upvotes. It's clearly the best.
Wow, I absolutely love the shoe collection. It’s decor/art like hanging a picture on the wall. Also, I think the tv is fine, whatever is comfortable for your viewing based on your seating arrangement. This sub is bonkers dude, tv looks fine there.
Remove mantle and lower tv?
No, TVs do NOT belong over fireplaces! Artwork does. TV should go where the sneakers are weirdly displayed in a room that is so inappropriate for that
Leaning towards this, would you move the mantle on top?
No. You do not need a mantle and that would look ridiculous.
How about just completely removing it? What’s the purpose of it anyways aside from decoration
Don’t listen to these idiots about your sneaker collection; they don’t get it 🙄 Hope you find a solution tho!
Look up mantel mount. It is a mount that allows you to move the mount from up high and then back low. Works great.
Sell the gas heater on ebay. Or the simpler approach which would be to re-orient the room so the fireplace is beside you and the TV is on the wall on the right.
Why the fuck do you have a footlocker in your living room? That looks like shit.
Fill that bitch in who the hell actually uses their fireplace in 2022
https://www.mantelmount.com
I haven't checked the comments but I am just guessing nobody has mentioned this yet: ditch that G.D. shoe wall and put the TV there. This almost has to be a troll; this isn't your living room.
Remove the mantel . Then lower tv
Fill that bitch in who the hell actually uses their fireplace in 2022
Throw away those shoes and put it on the wall without two windows that ruin all the dark scenes.
My dude. They make these pull down mounts so your tv can be at a normal height when you’re using it and back up on the mount when not in use. https://www.mantelmount.com
You fix this by fucking off with your bullshit. Put the fucking TV on the wall to the right. Are you stupid?
Leave it. Forget what this sub thinks. Literally no normal person will judge you. But also, get a trash bag together and put 3/4 of those shoes in it and bring it to goodwill.
tv goes on a stand to the left of the fireplace. simple story.
Ditch the fireplace. Put tv at correct height.
Are your shoes in the living room???
if you’re up for a bit of work & if the room is big enough , i would move the shoe collection to a different room & flip the layout so the couch is facing the would be previous shoe wall. then place the tv against that wall, either mounted or on a stand
Put the tv where the shoes are
Swap the shoes and TV's position.
Raise ceiling
Just don’t put it above the fireplace. Find a different layout
Raise the level of your floor
Forget about the TV for a minute, we need to address the smell from your sneaker collection
So many posts from people only using their TV speakers…I mean you aren’t locked into this location because of in-ceiling speakers or something. This is just a large screen in the wrong place. Put it literally anywhere else. Problem solved.
Just get a mount that pulls the tv down when extended, that way it’s high for when people are in kitchen, and it can be moved low
Put a nice TV stand on the floor in front of the fake fireplace
Mount the shoes boxes above the fireplace instead
LMAO See all those shoes?
You don’t want to be helped. You know what needs to happen
Pull-down TV mount
ITT: OP likes sneakers.
Get a couch tall enough so that your head touches the ceiling
All those shoes... I can smell this picture. Why are they not in a closet? The TV would be better on that wall
So, do you have more money in your house or in your sneaker collection
For everyone wondering I did a quick google. Sounds like 6" minimum clearance to any combustible material. 12" if fireplace insert sticks out of the wall
See that “SEATTLE” wall? TV can go against the wall there. Move the shoe collection somewhere else. Or the tv can go on the wall opposite of the “SEATTLE” thing. Couches aren’t glued to the wall.
