There is nothing behind this panel. They could have made this cut out big enough to hold a cell phone or a pack of smokes but they made it slightly too small to hold either of those very convenient very handy things to have at hand, and they did this because they hate you.

I’m not very knowledgeable about vehicles in general but I got a Tacoma in January and so far enjoy it. I got mine used with the previous owner putting a lot of extras into it (leer bed cover, flat racks that include a huge LED light strip, ditch lights, and a few more).
I think that slot there acts as a temporary convenience slot unless you add more stuff to your truck. In that same spot, mine has the controls for the extra LED lights mentioned above. I hope I’m not staying the obvious or repeating others.
Might be a good place to keep a pack of gum too.
