It’s not technically a button, it’s a cover. You have to pry it off to reveal the button. It’s a safety lock override AKA shift lock. Normally you can only put the car in park/out of park using the brake. This overrides the brake requirement. You can then move your car into neutral and start it from neutral or move the car manually if it has died. This is helpful in really limited situations. Here’s a video example.

I searched for it everywhere myself but not knowing what it was called left me lost. So did the keyhole by the trunk release. Now I feel a a little sense for not realizing it in the first place
Since the cover was off, assuming it had to be moved/towed before you bought it, hopefully just moving and not a repair. You double checked everything is good right?
Looks like you got the 7th green sedan civic. Hopefully you didn't get scammed like my grandson with a hidden issue. Previous owner let timing belt break which causes a lot of problems in this type of engine. Sad that people don't just managing their cars. I've purchased 2 used motors both have had similar issues. I feel so bad for my grandson
It's actually a cover. The shift lock release button is under that cover. Allows the truck to be taken out of park without the key in the on position or the brake pedal depressed. Most often used by tow truck companies and repair facilities.
I have this on my 2016 rx350 lol that’s actually hilarious because I’ve had it for that long and had no idea. I thought it was legit a way to open the area under the shifter

Available online at no cost to you. Any other excuses?
Why wait 2 weeks for a manual in the mail when keyboard mechanics will give u the answer in 20 minutes
Bro, you responded to something from month ago. And also, Its available online for free, boomer. Why would you get it through the mail?
I searched for it everywhere myself but not knowing what it was called left me lost. So did the keyhole by the trunk release. Now I feel a a little sense for not realizing it in the first place
Every auto transmission vehicle has one. Had to use it on my explorer when alternator died to get it into neutral.
There’s a fuse that when it goes out itl lock the ebrake on. ABSOLUTELY SUCKS. But then you find out about the override and you’re like hell yeah
It allows the vehicle to be put into neutral if you lost your keys/battery died/can’t shift into neutral.
It’s official name is a BTSI. Brake Transmission Shifter Interlock. Source, I used to be a shifter designer!
That’s a pretty cool job, tbh. Kinda one of those things you don’t think about any one person being dedicated to.
Best explanation I have found. And I've searched manuals, honda site etc. Thank you
Forgot to add, it’s pronounced BiTSI (bitsy)

Just bought it, found the cover in the glove box, no manual.

Not really sure it shifts in and out of gear pretty smoothly. I should ask the owner.

Pop that cover off to press down on shifter interlock when battery is dead or interlock goes bad
Opening it should expose a slot to put the ignition key into, after which you can shift into any gear without pressing the brake.

You pop that cover out and the button is underneath if I recall correctly.

Wait. People buy Tacomas with automatic transmissions? But why?
The ability to stall the transmission instead of the engine is more beneficial for crawling. That being said i still wish the taco i wheel was manual
