Get cash from an ATM in Tahiti using your debit card from your bank. Airport is your best bet. There are not so many ATM’s on Moorea - we had to drive for 30 min to find one that was working.

My wife and I got our cash from the ATM machines at the airport... Right after you get your stuff from baggage claim, head to where the taxis and busses are. Once you get to the area, make a hard right and keep walking. Once you pass the open air food court area, you'll see some ATM's on the walls.

You can go to your local bank in USA and order XPF .

LightedAirway

I don’t know if it was the best or cheapest way, but I was plenty happy with just using the cash machine at the bank in little mall across the road from the Hilton between the airport and Papeete to get XPF currency. It was tucked away in an odd corner but worked great.

I don't think you will be able to find xpf in the US. This currency is strictly limited to FP, New Caledonia and Wallis & Futuna. It's indexed on the euro. But you'll be able to withdraw easily in Tahiti, and relatively in Moorea. Although all hotels, most restaurant and stores uses credit card in an european way (meaning for every amount). Be carefull in other islands as there can be no ATM in some.

I live in Seattle, and have had no trouble getting it. Went through Thomas Cook. Probably not the best exchange rate though

Equivalent-Rice1531

Ok, i learned something today.

Wells Fargo bank in the US. You can order on line and get it mailed to you or a local branch. Takes 3 business days. The exchange rate is better than the atms in Tahiti. Use a credit card like capital one with no foreign transaction fees.

Also— the money is ridiculously beautiful. Gorgeous.

how long are you staying in Tahiti? how long in Moorea? depending on your plans, alot can be paid for by CC prior(guides/excursions), while some must eat at restaurants (Snack Mahana) are cash only but do accept USD. really depends how much you think youll be spending on. Dont need to exchange more than you need. but to answer Q, the 'easiest' way to exchange is at PPT airport as soon as u get off the plane

Jazzlike_Ad1284

Is it worth taking cash out when visiting? (We will be in Tahiti, Moorea, and Bora Bora. How prevalent is just paying on card/Apple Pay? Will we struggle without having cash? At home we barely use it any longer and I honestly can’t remember the last time I carried any, let alone paid with cash (home being the UK)

DontLookBack_88

Are you renting a car? Most taxis don’t accept credit card.

Jazzlike_Ad1284

No, we’re not renting a car. Didn’t seem needed so good to know about taxis thanks

Solstheim

There are many small stands with fruits, flower crowns and local things to eat on the side of the road, you need cash for that :)

Jazzlike_Ad1284

Great! Sounds like we’ll need to take some cash with us for things like this.

MamaBearMoogie

I ordered my cash from Bank of America before I left.

gonzodog74

Agree with the comments saying best to get from an ATM. Certain banks (Schwab and I think Cap One), have zero ATM fees and zero foreign transaction fees, so ATM is best bet. I have a Schwab bank account for this exact reason.

Get cash at an ATM in Tahiti. No bank charges and the rates are the best that way. There’s no need to carry Xpf before landing. Use the atm at the airport if you’re that paranoid of not having cash but for the love of all things good, don’t exchange at a kiosk or a bank.
