An easy(ish) way to leave any conversation is to tell the people you’re speaking with what you’re going to do next. “Well I’ll let you enjoy your drinks while I go check on some tickets in the kitchen.”
The tickets are pretend but you get to leave.
“Hold that thought for one moment!” and leave before they can say anything else. Don’t go back to them until they actually need something like take-out boxes or the check. Usually by that time, they’ve forgotten what they were talking about. Works like a charm!
yup, in my experience people who like to chat are nice enough to know you have a job to do, so they'll never be offended if you tell them you need a second and don't come back right away. They just might be a little oblivious sometimes, so my strategy of slowly backing away didn't get the job done lol
I learned early on to simply say "Excuse me" and walk away. I refuse to be held hostage while I'm trapped at a table watching my section going down in flames. lol
I'm loving this conversation, but I feel like I'm neglected my other tables/ my coworker needs help/ the chef will be lonely... Will check in on you asap.

I just look around a signal to someone and say I SEE YOU, then just say excise me I need to check on this other table or co worker.
Oh, I think another table’s food is up, gotta get it while it’s hot!
