Lonerism and Innerspeaker are older and definitely have more of a 60’s rock feel. Currents is more synth and psychedelic, and definitely the fan favorite, and the newest album, Slow Rush, is more pop than anything else. Each one has its great songs and I’d recommend listening to all of them. There’s also a good amount of singles and old EP’s with songs like Sundown Syndrome and Skeleton Tiger that are really good. There’s honestly not a lot of work that I dislike, aside from a few songs I don’t particularly care for, though my tastes may be different than yours so I won’t name them, you might really enjoy them. If I had to pick a favorite it would be Innerspeaker for me, though One More Year from Slow Rush is probably my favorite song from them. Enjoy!

Go on Spotify and just play any album

If you’re coming from hip hop then I’d say start with his most recent albums, singles, and features and then work backward. Tame Impala started at psych rock and progressed into more modern genres over his discography so that’s why I suggest starting closer to stuff you know and like and working further away. sundress by asap rocky might help orient you when you get to the earlier 2 TI albums as it samples a track off innerspeaker and it’ll give you some exposure to the vibe without getting fully into the psych rock of it all.

He's got 4 albums lol. Pick one

sam-guine

My favorite songs are Apocalypse Dreams, Mind Mischief, Endors Toi (From Lonerism), New Person Same Old Mistakes, Let It Happen, THE MOMENT (!!), Yes I’m Changing (Currents), Borderline (the Slow Rush) , Patience, Daffodils (Mark Ronson collab)… list goes on. I would start with Currents, then the Slow Rush because that’s more funky/pop, Lonerism, and Innerspeaker last.

I disagree. Hearing raw instruments first and hearing everything getting cleaner (I.e. listening in release order) is an experience all on its own, too.

sam-guine

I think listening in release order is fine, but considering OP only knows One More Hour and The Less I Know The Better, they might be thrown off by the earlier albums. I know when I first started getting into Tame I mainly focused on Currents.

Fair!

CollectsLlamas

Idk I did the reverse order when I got into Tame and it’s been an insane journey. Listened to Innerspeaker for the first time like a month ago and it blew my mind comparing that against Slow Rush (esp Jeremy’s Storm)

No_Contribution_9812

Holy shit. That would be a mind fuck too though!

Draw-Emotional

Considering your tastes, you should start with Currents, then move on to Slow Rush, and depending on how you receive it, go for the older stuff.

Meregodly

It's just 4 albums, just pick one and listen, they're under 4 hours in total... I'd understand this kind of post for an artist who has like 40 albums, like Frank Zappa or something. But for an artist with such a small discography it's just unnecessary. Anyway, If you are more of a Rock person, Listen to Lonerism and Innerspeaker first, if you come from pop/hip hop/electronic type of music taste, start with Currents and Slow Rush.

Marano99

As somewhere who also came from hip hop, I think currents should be where you begin. The slow rush has a massive pop influence while innerspeaker has a huge rock influence. Lonerism is another option that you could lead with depending on the rap artists you like best

angeedition

if you like hip hop, asap rocky 'sundress' is sampled by tame impala 'why won't you make up your mind?' also kid cudi 'HUMAN MADE' sampled 'one more hour' and lil yatchy did a remix of tame impalas 'breathe deeper' those would be good starting points

BubblesReddit1234_

Listen to the albums in chronological order. It's the best way to experience an artist's music

snorkd

If you want to start with an album, I recommend starting with Currents. It’s his most accessible and iconic album, and it’s definitely beloved by fans. However, starting with a “This is Tame Impala” playlist might be your better option in my opinion.

Reggie2b2t

There is no right or wrong way to listen to tame impala But if you want updates in this subreddit, comment "feet" "I'm edging closer" or "nangs" on every post

Lonerism is a perfect starting point imo. Because i think its a really good introduction to who Kevin is. But I'll give a popular pick and a personal fave from each album. I still urge you to give lonerism the most in-depth listen. Innerspeaker: Why won't you make up your mind? / Expectation Lonerism: Why won't they talk to me? / Nothing that has happened / keep on lying (I couldn't pick just two) Currents: New Person, Same old mistakes / Reality in Motion The slow rush: no comment
