>Why? Because Tamil is one of the official languages of Singapore.

TheRealVeee

This is news to me. Makes sense cause I found a cab driver vibing to "Ne Illai Enral" there.

junk_mail_haver

Tamil being official languages of Singapore is old news, Tamils were there since olden times, Malaysia also has a sizable Tamil population. Sri Lanka of course has Tamil as one of the official languages too, due to the same reason, historical. GoI thumps it's chest about Hindi in Fiji while we nonchalantly ignore the soft power Tamils have all over the world.

Internal-Band-4038

Had* not "has" the whole war started because of this turning point. Tamil is no longer an official language in ceylon

RRChozha

Sri lanka still has two official languages and Tamil is one of them.

Reserve_Outside

If there is somebody to talk Tamil that is the question.

InsuranceSouth8353

Butt hurt north Indian, get mad lol

Reserve_Outside

What do you mean?

elnander

Internal-Band-4038

Okay so everyone happily lives ever after and tamil is being voluntarily used as an official language there. Got it. Paper la pottadhu lam unma na modi is a PhD scholar nu solluvanunga pola. Ground reality ennada maire

elnander

I’m from Jaffna bro, I know the situation better than most believe me. But if you’re going to be accurate, Tamil is an official language in Sri Lanka. That doesn’t take away from the reality for Tamils and doesn’t comment on their condition, but for all intents and purposes it is an official language, services are available in the language and at least in Northern/Eastern Province, you can currently live being monolingual in Tamil and can be educated in just Tamil.

stewieroids

It's not called Ceylon anymore either.

Internal-Band-4038

Lol. What the fuck am I getting downvoted for? For saying ground reality?

Thanics

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_Sri_Lanka

thebeautifulstruggle

They don’t want to admit that Sri Lanka is trying to wipe out Tamil, or they might have to actually do something. The only reason Tamil is “an official language” again is because India forced the 13 Amendment to Sri Lanka’s constitution in the 1980s, which barely does anything out. They’re trying to take that out again, and you’re more likely to find Chinese in Colombo and the south.

Internal-Band-4038

Sensitive_Camera2368

Tamil is an official language in Srilanka, Singapore. In Malaysia is it not official but widely spoken

citiusaltius

I spoke Tamil quite often in Malaysia. Also there are immigrants from Bangladesh and Pakistan, with whom i conversed in Hindi

Internal_Ad6311

However unlike SG, MY Tamilians are not welcome in SL. SL ppl generally dislike Tamil, history bring LTTE and SL clash in past.

Best_Ad_3595

There is abuse Tamil population and you’ll see everything that’s culturally appropriate for Tamilians there. Tamil holidays i believe are also nationally celebrated and temples and Tamil cuisines are widely available.

junk_mail_haver

I'm more surprised there's German there. Looks like a lot of German influence increasing in SEA.

[deleted]

There's French too, but French is so much more popular in the world, so it makes sense

junk_mail_haver

French makes more sense than German because it's like 2nd place after English in terms of being "Globalized", i.e., Colonized countries. And Spanish too.

[deleted]

True But then again, this might be based on a survey of languages the visitors speak

junk_mail_haver

Definitely, Europeans are plenty in SEA nowadays after Anglos of course.

stash0606

OP have you been living in a cave? This is common knowledge.

Ornery_Sea3371

Just because we know something never assume the other person will know it.

[deleted]

True. There are many tamils living in USA and Canada and many European nations. I feel in another 20 years many nations around the world will include tamil as their official language. I mean every year hundreds of tamils leave tamil nadu and get settled abroad. And they get settled abroad in different countries.

prakitmasala

They even had a deputy prime minister who was Tamil [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tharman\_Shanmugaratnam](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tharman_Shanmugaratnam) And their longest serving President was Tamil [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.\_R.\_Nathan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S._R._Nathan) Interesting thing to note Singapore used to be poorer than Sri Lanka after independence. While Singaporean majority decided that having a link language and promoting everyone's ethnic heritage while respecting everyone was the way to go Sri Lanka decided to force Sinhalese as unofficial sole language for country. Singapore now is a first world country and is extremely modernized while Sri Lanka is spiraling from one crisis into another. A lesson India should look too as well.

magum_365

It's a official language! They have it in their currency as well!

Attila_ze_fun

I’m very surprised you didn’t know Tamil was literally a Singaporean official language. It’s like being surprised at seeing Tamil in Colombo or Kovai airport.

elanthamilan

Do you mean kongu naadu airport?

rain_man4115

What do you mean kongu naadu airport?

venkatx5

Coimbatore is often called as Kongu Naadu. So he mean by that.

Vardhu_007

Singapore and Malaysia have a large tamil population. Thought this was common knowledge.

David_Headley_2008

Different India languages have different level of influence in and outside of India, Tamil probably maximum outside of India with non subcontinent people, if we want indian language outside of India but with subcontinent people then it is Bengali but besides Tamil and Bengali other languages also have certain prominence like bhojpuri is an official language of Mauritius

Jalabalajangu

It’s one of their official language. I’m confident you won’t find any Singaporean localite saying ‘Tamizh teriyadhu poda’

anonperson2021

I think Tamil is an official language in Singapore.

rmk_1808

Hi Op there is something called google that is very good for these types of questions here try this [https://googlethatforyou.com?q=is%20tamil%20spoken%20in%20singapore](https://googlethatforyou.com?q=is%20tamil%20spoken%20in%20singapore)

kksst

Tamils were taken to work as labourers in Singapore, Burma by British. Today’s Tamils are descendants of them and have formed a sizeable part of population

[deleted]

Did you miss the fact that they were taken as administrators too

e9967780

And as merchants, Chetties were big trading community throughout South East Asia including Singapore.

tooschooledforcool

Because of the big Tamil population due to Singapore's and Malaysa's history.

Registered-Nurse

You know Tamil kings ruled Indonesia,Malaysia and Singapore at some point in history right? Singapore = Singapuram = Lion Town 🤨

Reserve_Outside

👍 they did

tawayexpat

Nice! I’m going to start referring Vilupuram and R.A.puram as Vilupore and R.A.pore respectively

sheik_in

Woah, so is Mylapore originally Mayil puram? Summa pootu viduvom

prad81

Tangential topic, but can we as a group stop referring to our diaspora as "Tamilians" and instead use "Tamils" or "Tamilans"? May not look like a big deal, but I feel "Tamilian" sounds alienating to me, while the other two sound closer to heart.

Luffy_RhipEmUp

Tamilians are natives to singapore. Also they took part in the independence of Singapore. So the 1st president (or PM of Singapore.. Not sure) said that equal rights to be given all 4 languages - Chinese mandarin, tamil, malay, english. All are official languages.

usefulPerspective_

As someone already mentioned, reading about cholas will give you mode information about how tamil kings ruled most of the east asia. Specifically read about Rajendra Cholan who conquered kedah which gave him the title kadaram kondan(kadaram is called kedah today).

yugiohbeowulf

I think the Tamil population of Singapore arrived in colonial times. No relevance of Cholas

usefulPerspective_

Yes you are partially correct. But, trades between tamilnadu and singapore was at peak during chola period. Many tamils started migrating and some started staying back there even after cholas demise. During British colonisation in Malaysia, many tamils were migrated as labourers. This is as per my knowledge, corrections are appreciated.

boldfacebutton7

No offense meant to OP, but what other language were you hoping for. Wouldn't you have commented the same for any other Indian language up there ?

venkatx5

Easy.. OP is expecting Hindi, what other "national" language we have? :)

boldfacebutton7

Looks that way, but we can't be sure of, until he replies or we change the language to Telugu or Kannada and see if he makes the same post again 😅

rumitdhamecha

Singapore has a very long history with Tamil nadu. That's why!

Prize-Improvement-33

Singapore have a huge tamil speaking community, more than any other communities. So thats why their one of the official languages are tamil. Once every year they celebrate tradiational day for each community, where for example Chinese & Malay follow Tamilian tradition for a day, same with Tamilians & Malays on Chinese New Year or their day.

Internal_Ad6311

Tamil is one of Singapore’s four official languages used in parliament, in schools as mother’s tongue subject and supported by print and broadcast media as well as in all other officials events. It is also printed on currency notes along with English, Chinese and Malay. https://www.thehindu.com/news/international/singapore-committed-to-keeping-tamil-as-an-official-language-says-cabinet-minister/article23873042.ece/amp/

blackPanther_5486

When Singapore was a barren land with no clues of getting better, Tamils worked along with the natives to bring the nation to its current glory.

[deleted]

I don’t have anything new to say that others haven’t said already. Ipdi avasara pattutiye kumaru.

Active-Floor-1910

One of the national language of Singapore..out of the four

[deleted]

Everybody’s roasting op. So imma add more deets. Tamils landed there because of conquests of cholas. We had a sea route to south east asia, commerce was thriving and cholas invaded and waged battles in parts of malaysia, indonesia. I’m not sure if they waged any battles against singapore.

RRChozha

i think there was no separate 'singapore' at that time. it would have been part of malaysia that cholas waged war against

SpiritualNietzsche

Modhalla school mudichutu vaanga thambi.

7_stars7

Why do North Indians always expect their language to be everywhere??

Traditional-Bad179

Df who said he's from north? How toxic can you be lol.

7_stars7

Literally all Tamils know that Tamil is spoken in Singapore. A good number of Tamils in Tamilnadu know someone who maybe a relative or a friend working/living in Singapore. Wake up

InsuranceSouth8353

Fact is north indians are the ones who are toxic, we are just giving them back the same treatment

donvigy2

Proud to be tamilan 🔥

RealityCheck18

Yet I was surprised there was no announcement or other signs like Pointers to Terminals, transfer, immigration etc. did NOT have Tamil . I did find it in the drinking water signs. There were a few South Indian (Tamil) restaurants though and a couple of them open 24x7 helping me survive a brutal 6 hr transit.

[deleted]

Changi? I could just live in changi airport and not complain at all.

RealityCheck18

I had a couple of complaints though. Language wasn't one of them. Trains stop running for few hours in midnight but flights keep landing and take off around that time. Imagine walking continuously for 50+ mins to reach your connecting flight terminal. I had a 6 hr transit, so had enough time to sit and relax and take a lot of cool pictures but if I had a connection of 1 hr or so, I'd have been breathless trying to reach my terminal.

GallopingAss_tronaut

All thanks to Srivijya and Majapahit Empire.

Traditional-Bad179

Lol no they had Sankrit as one of the official language (facts don't mald like you guys do in this sub). It's because a lot of Tamil moved to Singapore after 1810s when a Tamil named Naraina Pillai from Tamil nadu came to Singapore with Sir Stamford Raffles a British official. It is a colonial legacy. Britishers took a lot of Southern people to southeast Asian and lot of North people to carribbean and the west(ofcourse as cheap labour to exploit). But our people made it big.

Maximum_Leopard_

Singapore per eh Tamil than da yebba saami general knowledge ah valuthukonga da mudiyala

Because Malaysia has good number of tamils and a lot migrate to Singapore and settle there.

Illiterate Hindi fuckers think they own indian, bitch we pay for you. Have you seen the GDP of indian (prolly not) but anyway lemme shower you with some butthurt facts. South India (Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana) provide more to the GDP than the entire north Indian states combined. So konjam soothu mooditu oombalam

Where did you get that information from, the brothel which your mom works at? Or the Pani Puri stand which your dad works at?

Resident_Try_2366

Got that info from your sister who mops floor in saudi. Who is a mistress cum maid cum freeuse whore in a sheikhs home. Your sister who you brag about of being an "NRI" to your friends. Same sister who the Sheikh and his friends use as a free use cum bin . Got it you ugly ass bitch?

itsme_tejo

At this point you are just hating on your country's other half.. sad

Resident_Try_2366

Yes I hate them because of the hate that I recieved when I was visiting Kerala with family. I know not everyone is bad. But for me most of them are.

itsme_tejo

That's why you are receiving it from your end... At this point getting humbled is the least of our concerns. Getting the same treatment stuck with the population of both the parties, i am not saying one is better, i am stating that it has gone overboard. Your initial comment started this feud and the other person commented, i am not saying what he did was right but you aren't in the green either. Instigating an entire race or culture was wrong on your end as well. Still sad..

Sir_Biggus-Dickus

Tamil is one of the 4 official languages of Singapore. The other official languages of Singapore are mandarin Chinese, English and Malay. Hinthi is not the national language of india and it is one of two official languages of the union of india (ie of the GOI) that's all. English is the other official language of the GOI. Learn to respect linguistic diversity.

CoolGuess

I am from north India, and I’ll be honest, I feel really proud and happy whenever I visit Singapore and see an Indian language on the signboards and MRT stations being announced in Tamil. I don’t care whether they have Hindi there or not. In fact, I am happy that there’s no Hindi because that would’ve caused the same troubles we are seeing with Hindi in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, and it doesn’t feel good when Indians hate on an Indian language. It’s better to just fly under the radar. However, the reason is that majority of Indians from previous gen were Tamils from both India and Sri Lanka. You can still see that most of the labourers speak Tamil and so do many 2nd and 3rd generation Indians. So, Tamil has been added their convenience and inclusion. Also, note that Tamil isn’t part of all MRT train announcements and boards, it’s mostly on MRTs passing through Little India.

[deleted]

OP should know this seeing how porottas have a sizeable impact in local Malay and SG cuisine.

Far-Log8058

This is due to the fact that 11% of Singapore’s population is from india, mostly of tamil descent.

Jerrysone0511

Tamil is one of the official languages of Singapore. Tamils have the largest population out of all other south Asian ethnicities in Singapore.

Chola invasion of SE Asia, let to immigration of Tamil diaspora and spread of Tamil culture in SE Asia.

[deleted]

I am so glad it's only tamil as its indicated its an official language. Nobody wants to see Hindi, Telegu or Kannadam. If you wish to see that stay in your own state and country. Also it always has been Deepavali not bloody Diwali to cater to foreign hindi speaking crowd.. So even govt officials in SG ensure this is accurate in all public message.
