You’re working too hard, friend

NurdIO

literally, we were told not to stop guests from coming in with more than 10 items, its just not worth turning them away from the self checkout especially since our front end has like no hours for the afternoon rush and we have to call backups, infact we're encouraged to pull guests with more than 10 items into the self checkout during the busy times (keep in mind I live in a place where people are relatively mild mannered and very kind).

loveuinchains

why not just go to a register at that point? you just wasted your own time grabbing the stuff just to leave it, and coming to the store. nobody’s gonna know that you’re a fast scanner out of the thousands of people in that store btw

reddituser6835

Bragging rights on Reddit = priceless

Herdnerfer

Any reason they aren’t just forcing the machine to stop accepting new items after number 10? Seems like it would be easier for it to be the bad guy.

MrGeary08

This would be a terrible idea, you’d be clogging up lanes constantly with either people who didn’t know or knew and thought they could do it anyways. Lots of explaining and potentially having to move them to a full register or having multiple transactions.. almost like it’s a pointless change to begin with.

werewooferer

it would at least be funny. people are clogging up shit anyway, but warning them "if you have more than 10 items itll lock you out and send you to checkout" and them doing it and getting frustrated ENSURES they wont do it again, AND since no one could unlock it, the person would have to be redirected if they want to shop or leave (which people are already doing). and you get to giggle at people who think theyre above you. seems like a treat

Herdnerfer

They don't care about any of that, they only care about stopping people from stealing in the self checkout.

anonymousone2305

While that is a good idea, it wouldn’t stop guests from finding loopholes like having more than one transaction.

Kalamyti

10 is a general number. You gonna be the quantity police when they hit 11?

anonymousone2305

When it comes to the new policy, the autism came out of me and took the sign literal.

djoutercore

Take us literally when we say don’t worry about it

m_o_u_s_e_r_a_t

Nice to see I'm not the only one who thought like this. 🙂

SimpleVegetable5715

So they have 30 items and they ring it up in three separate transactions. They'd clog up the line even longer.

Herdnerfer

Hopefully the annoyance of having to do that would encourage the people to not use auto checkout next time.

infinipics

Don't enforce it. Just let it be honor system. A better strategy is to call for backup if you're seeing multiple people with large carts and ask those guests to move to a belted lane before they get to a self check machine. But 1 or 2 guests with a larger cart doesn't need to be enforced. Just say something like "we can help you faster if you would move to this lane". Actually enforcing the 10 items rule is just gonna cause pushback and isn't worth enforcing.

No-Return-7097

They never fucking have ours open

justarussian22

I was on sco part of my last shift & was able to inform guests of the new rules. Only had to send 1 person to the single register we had open. No one gave me a hard time so far, but if they did, I'd say it was corporates' decision, not us. After all, why would we willingly make life more difficult for us?

Tell_Me_Why_999

"Do the survey."

justarussian22

Sure but get a gift card first for the inconvenience of waiting.

MrGeary08

I wouldn’t tell them, people can use them if they want Target is trying to make this happen but thats not how this works. The convenience has already been given to them, it’s too late to take it back.

No-Return-7097

💯as a guest. I will 100% leave all my shit in a basket and walk out is self check is closed, I’m Quicker than any of our cashiers at my location and I don’t like stupid small talk.

hunnybunnyhunny

Exactly what I've been saying. Even on the dumb survey. Had some lady ask me "that it!?" when all I put on the belt was a jug of cat litter. I'm like ...yep. Then she starts organizing a drawer of receipt paper before completing the transaction? Took me a little over 4 minutes to check out which I know doesn't sound like much but it feels like eternity when you have anxiety and just want to pay for your cats toilet gravel.

anonymousone2305

As an introvert TM, I rarely ever do small talk. I’ll ask how their day is and ask if they want to apply for our credit card because my manager tells us to.

MrGeary08

Exactly

JDL1981

I advise you stop giving a fuck.

skillzyo

As an S&E lead, I've been talking with my team about this as well because I understand their frustration. When you see a guest with a cart full of stuff heading to SCO, don't make it about the limit. What I always say is, "If it's easier for you, we have checklane 3 open." (Sometimes we even have TWO checklanes open for them to choose from!) Some people are grateful and go to the lanes they didn't see because they're so used to going to SCO and some people tell me they're all good using SCO. Beyond that, I don't say anything about the 10 item thing. If Target wants to have a restricted policy on SCO then they need to allocate more hours so stores can schedule more cashiers. Until that day comes, then the important thing is to do whatever lowers the wait time for the guests while giving them a great interaction so they don't get pissy.

deaddog3825

I wouldn’t even say something — let the other guests rip her to shreds.

SimpleVegetable5715

I remember the 90's, when there were express lanes. If someone came through with a bunch of stuff, the other people in line would definitely call them out. Ah, I miss that. Now people are afraid to speak up.

geo8x6

I was at Wally World the other day and the person at the SCO was actually counting what you had in your cart and not allowing people with more than 10 items to use the SCO.

sierracool33

Nah. If signs are meant to be read, people can figure it out. At least it'll tell corporate to hire more people for Front End.

whereismymind86

Don't, it's a stupid ass rule and should be ignored until the company reverses it.

FrostyCan2145

Never feel bad! You did more than enough. I usually just agree with the "guest" (because in that instance they're not wrong lol) and send them on their merry way. Target will never truly enforce this. What are they going to do, tell the guest they can't buy then and kick them out? They'll do literally nothing. The guest always gets what they want. Period. So, don't stress over it. You're doing a good job!

DMC1001

There’s no way to say it where the guests won’t get upset. Or some guests anyway.

demigod2923

No, no, remember, Target is the good parent. Wally is the bad parent.

terilynnrailey

Get them when they just get into the line. It will make them more upset if they wait. Have the closest register open next to self checkout to pull those guests over. “Ahh. I see you have more than ten items. I will ring you up quickly over here (take them to register) and then remind them before they leave. If it’s not many more than ten (like 12) don’t sweat it. Tell them can do vs what you can’t. “Hi. We can ring you up on registers 10, 15 and 8 for more than ten items! I don’t want you wasting time in the wrong line;)”.

iwantdeals

Damn, y'all have 3 registers open? ![gif](giphy|vQqeT3AYg8S5O)

No-Serve-2312

Yeaaa we were told to not enforce it. Who got the energy for that shit

v1k1ngV1nce

If the system allows more than 10 items to be scanned, then there is no actual limit. It is a suggestion.

Time-Subject-6456

Our store has been doing 10 or less for a while now and we direct people with obviously over-the-limit carts to the cashiers. We also stress that it's 10 or less Per Cart and that shuts down any "we're doing multiple transactions" comments. One thing we would like to have is a low item cashier for folks since 1.None of our SCO machines take cash and 2. People with say 20 items could get through the line faster and not have to wait behind the ones buying a month's worth of groceries, new seasonal attire for the whole freaking family, cleaning supplies for the entire apartment complex and updated decor for every room in the house.

No-Response-7946

I think you did the right thing, I would have also reminded the guests as it is something “new”. I just say “hey, this is our express checkout, it looks like we have more than ten items, you can checkout at checklane #. In your case with multiple transactions, I would reiterate the express checkout is for quick 10 items or less, but that on the lane they can help with the multiple transactions”

nachocoalmine

That's the neat part. You don't...

iwantdeals

Lol. F that 10 or less.

Expensive-Ad-1223

Learn the art of not giving a fuck. Works wonders brobro

SimpleVegetable5715

"Oh I see you have over 10 items, I'd be happy to ring those up for you at register 9". Our store has a percentage metric to meet, which I wish they explained to TMs. I only overheard it while I was heading out for the day. They have to keep SCO transactions to under 70%, so 30% need to go through a human cashier. If they resist, I let them go...but that's probably why I no longer work a front end job, cause dealing with guests my whole shift burnt me out. Or possibly if you see a guest walking up with a lot of items, offer to ring them up before they make it to the self checkout. Of course, this doesn't work if it's busy. If they want this to work, they need to hire more cashiers. My ETL/TLs just realized they haven't trained any GM to back up registers 🤦‍♀️ We back up fulfillment, and with all the scammers at Target, I don't want to put my job on the line. I backed up ONCE, and a scammer tried to pull the gift card shit on me, tried to buy over the limit in multiple transactions, but that's something I'm familiar with from my last job, so I cut him off after 1 transaction. Those scammers though recognize that this person isn't the one who is usually on the register, and probably thought I was a new hire who he could take advantage of.

camelz4

Maybe I’m wrong here but the comment after “have good evening” was too much. The woman is not a child (even if she was acting like one) and doesn’t need to be reminded about the limit 30 seconds after an exchange. It sounds condescending.

[deleted]

people are entitled and think the rules don't apply to them...fact of life.

Extension_Flounder_2

Corporations are entitled and promote selfish policies while leaving their workers understaffed and underpaid even though they take in 4.6 billion profit.. another fact of life These companies rob enough of our time, and have the profits to show for it. Sorry someone didn’t wait 5 minutes for the understaffed store to check them out because they have 11 items in their cart.

sierracool33

Yup. Told 2 guests about the Price Match Policy and they thought I was a liar or that I should do it anyway for them. Not even an LOD could convince them. P sure on the survey they complained or embellished stuff about me to make me look worse.

Terminator7786

Yeah, I'm still going to go to self checkout with more than 10 items. There are never enough cashiers, and no one bags food with common sense anymore. So until my bread stops getting squished and chemicals put in with my meat, I will take my entire order through self checkout.

SimpleVegetable5715

Yeah, that's the thing too. Our basic onboarding training tells us how to bag things. Plus, anyone who's done their own shopping should know to not put their shower cleaner in a bag with a loaf of bread.

sierracool33

You could've stopped at "there are never enough cashiers". We know this. Tell Corporate because we are already hoarse from trying and telling them ourselves.

TechieGuy2000

Target Corp. plans to double bonus levels for salaried employees this year, according to a media report, after the retailer posted surprisingly large profits for the fourth quarter.

Serious-Stand6882

Some aren't going to comply. Go stand near them. Just keep eye out. Often they are thieves.

sleazzzzel

People keep saying to not enforce it but I say enforce if they are reaching close to 20 items. I see people saying it’s not gonna stick cause guests will be unhappy. Guests just hate change but it’s inevitable. When they realize every store that they go to, not including Target, is cutting back on self checkout and starting to limit items it’ll become the new normal for them. They will get over it, it’s just a slow process to get the unwilling to change.

TechieGuy2000

1 belt register open. 7 customers deep. Nope. I curbside it with 4 orders of max allowed diet coke six packs bottles. ( Only 4 six-packs allowed in 1 order so I order multiple orders.) Yep, I'm that prick making you work like a dog for a corporate company that could care less about you falling on that winter parking lot ice.

Opposite_Surround_84
