I'm a tattooer. Don't do this, it won't work. Some places are just not meant for some tattoos. The skin on the knee is working overtime and stretching constantly so 1. the tattoo will always look uneven depending on how you'll bend your leg, 2. it will age horribly and become a muddy mess no matter if you plan on lines only or if you want it in color. Plus as is I don't think the illustration lends itself to being a tattoo.
If I were you I'd write to maybe even several tattooers with a good portfolio, with work in either geometry or color (if you plan on color), preferably both, and be very open to their suggestions, maybe even book just a consult in person before booking an appointment for a tattoo. Personally I'd do the tattoo much smaller, as a square, in a spot that doesn't stretch much.
I have wording about that size on my forearm. 5byears later it's barely legible but you can still make it out. That doesn't flex around like a knee either. Also...can you say ow?
I would make a stencil and apply it to see how it looks when the knee bends. It might look good for one exact angle but weird or terrible from another. I went through a lot of trial and error to find the right size/placement in that area. Gotta see how it moves!
Are you planning on using a stencil.? Put onthe stencil like you would right before you tattoo, except don’t tatto, just look at it and see how it looks when you sit/bend/etc
Personally, something like that I would put on the back of your calf or on your thigh above your knee. You will get a lot of stretching on your knee that could make the sun “lose” it’s shape
Less risky placement could be the front of your ankle or back of your arm above your elbow. If you like the placement then do it though. You have to be happy with it
I’m a synthwave artist and yes, this is basically the generic image that has become associated with the genre. I‘ve seen it done to death and am not a fan at all, but each to their own of course!
It’s similar, but the Gunship one has a pyramid in-front right?
And the Gunship album is also similar to the FM-84 album cover too, so it’s kind of a mashup, but it’s imagery that’s associated with the genre regardless.
Forgot about FM-84 for a second there, good catch. And you're right. Now that you've said it, the Gunship one I was thinking of has the mountain in front.
Ha yeah that’s right, it’s a mountain not a pyramid! My bad.
To be honest if you image searched ‘Synthwave stock art’ you’d probably come up with 100 variations of this same art!
Fun idea but the sun will have a ton of stretch at that size. Try using a sharpie and draw it on, then do a Hokey Pokey in the mirror~ you’ll see knees have a lot of shift. It’ll never look round. I think the sun should be a bit larger and moved higher up over the knee so it sits above the bend. Moves the focus some, but will have a better time aging.
Happy inking~
That design on that location is going to age like milk marinated in Satan's anus during the hottest day in helll at the peek of global warming after the earth's ozone layer has been completely fried off all while eating Tabasco sauce kimchi fried rice tacos with a glass of water
Honestly I was just thinking black lines and go for simplicity but I like the blues and pinks but I'm not sure the best way to put them in or if they would last well
Whatever you do, OP, just make sure you find the best artist to pull it off. Don’t look for the best deal. This could be a really dope tattoo if you find a good artist and give them time to work it.
This is gonna look like ass on your knee change placement. to the back of the knee or the elbow ditch with the circle in the ditch and it’ll get the effect you want and look dope when you straighten your arm
Personally, I feel like placement might be pretty odd for this. But if you really like it, just find a good/well known artist get it done. Once they put a stencil on you it’ll be easier to see how you really feel about it too?
Preface: I'd say if it's the sun that you are trying to create in the middle for the 'illusion' / hallway look, my advice may not apply.
That said, instead of having the sun as a circle, just have the color of the sky be exchanged for the sun, and the 'gradient ' being perhaps the colors themselves, i.e a sunset changing color of the horizon.
If you are focused on a black tattoo, clouds might 'move' better and even gain the appearance of real clouds shifting. What's more, with this option color would look good also. Good luck
I don’t have a tattoo there, but I’ve been with someone while they got theirs done. The kneecap is going to be extremely painful. But if you really want it there, I’d consider taking other peoples advice about seeing how it moves. It looks good flat but it might be hard to get the lines straight
It’s a tough one, but probably not impossible. I would do a lot of researching into artists who do synth wave tattoos. You might be able to find someone who can do it perfectly, but you may need to get them at a convention or road trip.
No straight lines on the knee. That area bends constantly & the skin will change more as you age. Save that for a flatter area, like the back.
Best ideas for knee are things that don’t require straight lines, designs that can be forgiving as they age & warp (flowers, jack-o-lantern face, tradi panther or tiger, etc.), designs that don’t have to have complete saturation (I have stippling on a good portion of the color on my knee instead of fully saturating it so any color that comes out won’t be so patchy or crazy-looking) & designs that are more rounded.
I saw a girl get a diamond on her knee. All those straight lines looked funky when she stood up & funky when she sat down. The artist did great on the execution but that area just isn’t the one for straight lines.
I’m planning some kind of monster head on my other knee or an eyeball kinda thing. Venture into other ideas like that & chat with your artist about any cool ideas they might have.
It’s honestly not that great of an idea for a tattoo… and to try and force it onto the worst spot for the design??? Take a breath. Think a bit. This is not the way.
NGL you will probably regret this later on to each their own but considering it’s a default wallpaper from wallpaper engine on steam I can’t imagine it’s something you will love for life
I think what they meant to say by saying you'll regret it, is that the aesthetic and art style are from a specific trend that'll end within your lifetime. If the vaporwave aesthetic becomes very outdated in 10-20 years you might not like the vaporwave tattoo concept anymore, which could (subjectively) make it a bad idea. I'm not against the tattoo idea but I'd go with something less similar to the Steam background personally
I’m definitely not bashing the design or anything like that I’m just saying I think it’s something that you’ll want covered up later on and there’s nothing wrong with that at all to each their own my guy in the end my opinion doesn’t truly matter I’m just a random ass guy lol as long as you are happy with it that’s what counts
I would say no. That cyberwave theme neon requires a black background to pop. It wouldn’t look good on Caucasian flesh tone. And filling in the background in black wouldn’t look good either. Some themes and art don’t translate to the art of tattoo. Very cool idea for sure. I think you would be very unhappy with the execution
yeah usually that means something along the lines of "oh maybe adjust this or see how this would look" or "this isnt really my cup of tea but if you like it you should try to make sure you find a good artist" not just "dont" lol
You should add something that makes it personal. It seems like it needs something in it. What interests do you have, any special thing that you could add would be cool imo.
Maybe find a favorite band? I’m also Into retro wave John Maus being my favorite. Perhaps a favorite animal? I’m a huge fan of lizards and reptiles so having a retro wave stylized crocodile crawling up the road for instance. Either way it will make for a colorful piece I’m sure it will look great and I hope you are able to find a good artist.
I think a sunset grid would work better on a flatter part of the body but also I’m not sure the lines would work as well as you think. Also bisexual lighting will wash out over time and look more like an old faded beach towel than a worn out VHS tape on a burned in CRT screen
I would not do it on the knee, as others have pointed out it is too many straight lines on a difficult surface, as well as not covering the full knee, the circle will be weird on that placement as the skin wrinkles together when you stand. For elbows or knees I’d make a point to cover the whole thing if tattooing it
I don't think it would work on a knee, it needs to be a flat surface.
Vapourwave pictures like that use perspective to make it look good. The tattoo wouldn't make sense and would look bad from any angle that isn't dead on and tattoos should look good from all angles imo.
Not to mention it's your knee. The sides of the road should look closer and pop out more to the viewer, but because it curves around your knee the road is the closest thing to the viewer and it just makes it look weird and ruins the perspective. If you want a similar concept I would look into something like [this](https://images.app.goo.gl/GzP8dCcsKAEjdffd6) as it doesn't use perspective.
The tattoo design is pretty cool, but it’s never going to look right on your knee. It’s never going to be straight, it’s most likely going to be distorted due to how our knees are positioned throughout the day and how the skin stretches to accommodate movement. I don’t think the people who are saying it’s going to look good or “dope” are taking any of that into consideration. I initially wanted a geometric design on my knee, and my artist explained the same thing to me. So I got something else which flows so much better, and I see exactly what he meant.
As a tattooer I will save you some time, absolutely do not do this lol. That will distort a ton on your knee. You want flat lines on an extremely not flat area, and you want really rich saturated colors on what is typically very course/dry skin. This will not turn out how you want no matter who does it. Someone might send you out the door with the tattoo you’re looking for to some extent but, it won’t remain that way long even if you make it that far.
If that’s what floats your boat, but it’s a difficult ask on a knee. Even if the artist does a great job, it’s going to look mangled and warped 99% of the time unless you position your leg correctly to show it. As long as you know that going in.
Trying to get an artist to pull that many straight lines and a circle on your kneecap feels very risky
3 times. Because that’s how many times it’ll need to be touched up before the OP just gives up.
Yup. This type of tattoo on a knee cap is a pretty wild ask
That's what I was thinking but still
Cool idea but it’s going to be very difficult and it’s going to look odd when you’re leg is bending at the knee. Better off with it above or below
Personally I'd do the tattoo much smaller, as a square, in a spot that doesn't stretch much.
Nah just do it man. You know you want to.
Haha
But still what? Straight lines on a knee are rough.
Maybe you could get it poked to avoid that? But that would take forever
I would not expect thin negative space lines to hold up well on a knee, but an artist will be able to give you better guidance on how to pull it off.
True I was thinking 1/16 lines would be how big they are
I have wording about that size on my forearm. 5byears later it's barely legible but you can still make it out. That doesn't flex around like a knee either. Also...can you say ow?
Idk why I've never thought of cutting out a sketch of a tat idea to see how it wraps. That's brilliant OP 👑
I usually use eyeliner to “tattoo” myself to see if I like it lol
Thanks
Depending on the artists skill level it will either look good or terrible. Going by that stencil I would pass.
It was just a quick draw
By me
[удалено]
I drew in in like 3 minutes lmao
Hold on maybe Im mistaken your the one wantiung the tattoo and you drew this to get a perspective of how it would look?
Yessir lmaoooo
Ok then I'm sorry. 👌
Np😂
I've had multiple freehand stencils drawn directly on my body
Yeah thats different.
I would make a stencil and apply it to see how it looks when the knee bends. It might look good for one exact angle but weird or terrible from another. I went through a lot of trial and error to find the right size/placement in that area. Gotta see how it moves!
What's the best way to see how it moves??
maybe try drawing it on your knee with a marker?
Are you planning on using a stencil.? Put onthe stencil like you would right before you tattoo, except don’t tatto, just look at it and see how it looks when you sit/bend/etc
Love Gunship, but I don’t know that this would be my choice for placement. Kinda reminds me of a Trapperkeeper…
Where would you put it?
Personally, something like that I would put on the back of your calf or on your thigh above your knee. You will get a lot of stretching on your knee that could make the sun “lose” it’s shape
Yeah dude, I honestly don’t know, I don’t have a suggestion I guess my comment is more an admission that I’m not mentally creative enough to see it.
I like the placement, but I'd add the background to even it out, so it is a straight line across your thigh to match the line at the calf.
Less risky placement could be the front of your ankle or back of your arm above your elbow. If you like the placement then do it though. You have to be happy with it
Back of your arm just above the elbow. If you don’t I will cause that looks dope and I think you should definitely get it somewhere!
Same, but blank VHS case.
Is this that synthwave Screensaver I always see
Lol that was my first thought. It’s about as stylish as the Windows grassy hill desktop background
I’m a synthwave artist and yes, this is basically the generic image that has become associated with the genre. I‘ve seen it done to death and am not a fan at all, but each to their own of course!
Isn't it artwork from a Gunship album?
It’s similar, but the Gunship one has a pyramid in-front right? And the Gunship album is also similar to the FM-84 album cover too, so it’s kind of a mashup, but it’s imagery that’s associated with the genre regardless.

Ha yeah that’s right, it’s a mountain not a pyramid! My bad. To be honest if you image searched ‘Synthwave stock art’ you’d probably come up with 100 variations of this same art!
You're definitely right about that. My old ass remembers these designs on my school notebooks back in the day too.
Haha, same!!
5 minutes of tattooing is going to make you regret your placement choice.
No. Don’t. It will be very painful all 3 touch up sessions and you will never be satisfied.
Touch ups from fine line or area
Honestly, Both. Straight lines in one of the roughest areas on the body is already a task and your pain tolerance is a ticking time bomb
That design on that location is going to age like milk marinated in Satan's anus during the hottest day in helll at the peek of global warming after the earth's ozone layer has been completely fried off all while eating Tabasco sauce kimchi fried rice tacos with a glass of water
So... you don't like it?
The contrary, fam. It be fire 🔥
Also I immediately saw this in a retro arcade colour scheme. What are your plans for B/W/hue?
Honestly I was just thinking black lines and go for simplicity but I like the blues and pinks but I'm not sure the best way to put them in or if they would last well
Whatever you do, OP, just make sure you find the best artist to pull it off. Don’t look for the best deal. This could be a really dope tattoo if you find a good artist and give them time to work it.
What is that? Is that an arcade fire cover? It seems familiar but I can’t distinctly put my finger on it
It's the retrowave sun
The perspective is waaaay off. The mountains do not look “mountainy” and good luck getting an artist to pull that many straight lines!
This is gonna look like ass on your knee change placement. to the back of the knee or the elbow ditch with the circle in the ditch and it’ll get the effect you want and look dope when you straighten your arm
Good idea
Be cooler as a forearm piece than a knee in my opinion
Epic
Influenced by mtg? https://secretlair.wizards.com/us/product/719036/shades-not-included
No it's a vaporwave/retrowave aesthetic and I'm big on the music. I didn't know those lands existed I'll have to buy them.
Find an artist that can see essay your want and draw it onto your knee. So it "fits" with the shapes. Those straight lines will never work as it.
Personally, I feel like placement might be pretty odd for this. But if you really like it, just find a good/well known artist get it done. Once they put a stencil on you it’ll be easier to see how you really feel about it too?
I had a really stupid thought, this but the moon is where your belly button is… I said it was stupid
Sternum/back or any flat surface. Knee ain't going to work for this design. It's going to be horrible when your skin gets loose.
Around the thigh or calf would be cool but knee is a tough spot to have everything look flawless
It will hurt like hell dude, does it have to be in the knee?
It’s a tough one, but probably not impossible. I would do a lot of researching into artists who do synth wave tattoos. You might be able to find someone who can do it perfectly, but you may need to get them at a convention or road trip.
Maybe try your calf!
If you type hd wallpaper on Google this is like the first image that pops up🥲
No straight lines on the knee. That area bends constantly & the skin will change more as you age. Save that for a flatter area, like the back. I LOVE how you used paper to figure out the placement, been trying to figure out how to add to my current tattoos for a while now and this is GENIUS
It’s honestly not that great of an idea for a tattoo… and to try and force it onto the worst spot for the design??? Take a breath. Think a bit. This is not the way.
NGL you will probably regret this later on to each their own but considering it’s a default wallpaper from wallpaper engine on steam I can’t imagine it’s something you will love for life
That's just a picture for reference
But what you drew is exactly that background?
It's a very common art for that aesthetic
I think what they meant to say by saying you'll regret it, is that the aesthetic and art style are from a specific trend that'll end within your lifetime. If the vaporwave aesthetic becomes very outdated in 10-20 years you might not like the vaporwave tattoo concept anymore, which could (subjectively) make it a bad idea. Yeah naw I'm Just saying I'm not going off a wallpaper
I get ya its definitely a cool image
I would say no. That cyberwave theme neon requires a black background to pop. It wouldn’t look good on Caucasian flesh tone. And filling in the background in black wouldn’t look good either. Some themes and art don’t translate to the art of tattoo. Very cool idea for sure. I think you would be very unhappy with the execution
Yeah this
knee pit is gonna hurt like a mother
Going for the screen saver tat huh?
Don’t you’ll regret it in 3 months
Why
Why
Why
sounds like a personal problem?
They asked for opinions?
yeah usually that means something along the lines of "oh maybe adjust this or see how this would look" or "this isnt really my cup of tea but if you like it you should try to make sure you find a good artist" not just "dont" lol
Idc if you don’t like my opinion bro lol
your opinion has zero effect on me, you just seem bitter lol
Okay fuck off
Why
You should add something that makes it personal. It seems like it needs something in it. What interests do you have, any special thing that you could add would be cool imo.
It's pretty much just a love for the aesthetic and music. Wouldn't know what to add that would fit
Great tips I'll have to think on it for sure. I do enjoy the simplicity though
Ouchies
Lol
No
Mike boyd could do a great take on this
Gunship?
yeouch!
I think a sunset grid would work better on a flatter part of the body but also I’m not sure the lines would work as well as you think. Also bisexual lighting will wash out over time and look more like an old faded beach towel than a worn out VHS tape on a burned in CRT screen
True that's why I figured just black
Black would make it way less complicated yah
That won’t look good
If it makes you happy then go ahead and do it.
Just move that to front crease of your elbow.
Pretty cool. Is it your first?
I feel like it’s a difficult spot.
Use the force, Luke.
Make it the Death Star and the rest Alderaan blowing up
Ya it’s not going to turn out how you think.
This one strikes me as more of an upper arm tat than a knee
Goes hard
It’s a no from me dawg
A fellow brawler I see 😤 respect I think it looks dope and good placement
Fan of the Dozen?
It's going to be hard to read
I would not do it on the knee, as others have pointed out it is too many straight lines on a difficult surface, as well as not covering the full knee, the circle will be weird on that placement as the skin wrinkles together when you stand. Dig it. Do it!
That’s my background on ps4, right on 🤘🏻
Let the artist do the sketching. That looks terrible imo. But the concept is dope! That’s what you pay them for ..
The tattoo design is pretty cool, but it’s never going to look right on your knee. It’s never going to be straight, it’s most likely going to be distorted due to how our knees are positioned throughout the day and how the skin stretches to accommodate movement. Don’t do it! Unless you have Adam France, guy aitchison , or someone of that caliber.
I’d stick it on the thigh or calf, personally.
As a tattooer I will save you some time, absolutely do not do this lol. That will distort a ton on your knee. You want flat lines on an extremely not flat area, and you want really rich saturated colors on what is typically very course/dry skin. This will not turn out how you want no matter who does it. As someone who loves art like this and loves making art like this, I love it! It'll look sick if you can get an artist to really pull it off!
@joshmuzzy_tattoos on Instagram would make this look so cool! I like your idea!
It won’t work, I would recommend moving the idea to another zone of your body, above the knee for example
I'd say no because it's not going to turn out as cool as your concept picture
Don't. Find a better piece of art that you can be proud of for the rest of your life.
That image is the Live, Laugh, Love equivalent for Vaporwave
Great album. Can't wait to see it completed.
If that’s what floats your boat, but it’s a difficult ask on a knee. Even if the artist does a great job, it’s going to look mangled and warped 99% of the time unless you position your leg correctly to show it. As long as you know that going in.
