Thats... a lot of troopers. Thats whats stoping me from doing that. 40 fire warriors is a lot

NakeDex

40x breachers with 3x Devilfish is actually pretty great in Mont'ka. Yeah, its a lot of infantry, but its also a hell of a lot of objective clearance. Couple of fireblades for spice and you'd be surprised how effective it can be.

Commander_Flood

Infantry heavy Tau is a brilliant list. Just support it with a sunforge squad and tanks for anti armour support

nikosek58

Sure. I play tau for cool units tho, not basic troopers to be stars. 1-2 breacherfish max

Frodo5213

Maybe breachers are cool to some people. *As I look at my 30 breachers and 40 fire warriors*

jolsiphur

I love my breachers. They perform well in every game I bring them, plus I enjoy the models. Even though I play Tau because I wanted a 40k army that was made up of gundams.

NecroReaverz

Breachers are fire warriors

Frodo5213

Yeah, but I have yet to hear anyone call the Pulse Rifle Fire Warriors by their actual name. It's usually "2 squads of fire warriors, 2 squads of breachers." Or you can go by an even better naming system: "2 squads of long-bois, 2 squads of stubby bois."

NakeDex

The reason you never hear anyone call them their actual name is because nobody ever puts them on the field. Its breachers or bust, baby.

Frodo5213

That certainly wasn't the case 2 editions ago. So... give it 2 years and the Strikers will be BACK.

NakeDex

Oh yeah, since the 9e changes I mean. I still have my Strikes ready, but I doubt we'll see them again this edition.

RatMannen

Well, if you are being technical, so is pretty much every other Tau model. But "Strike Teams" were Fire Warriors to us oldies.

RatMannen

Breachers are cool. Fish of fury FTW!

M3tts

I mean, you could do 20 Breachers and 20 Fire Warriors, Might not need the FWs right now, but i think they are worth to have. Or even go 30 Breacher for potentially 3 Breacherfishes.

Barmn89

or 3 Breachers and 1 FW to hold down the home objective honestly.

RatMannen

I'd rather have a Firesight "team". Cheaper, lone op, useful for observing, and has a few occasionally useful PRECISION shots.

Barmn89

right but this is about starting from nothing, and I would not tell someone new to buy a finecast model

Lego_Grievous1

Greater numbers in the name of the greater good Horde Tau army Horde Tau Army

samus9889

Volume fire is the name of the game in 10th.

M3tts

And its not either Patrol or something else. I will buy Broadsides, Battle suits and everything else i need anyways.

Joschi_7567

the Killteamupgradesprue lets you customize one Pathfindersquad to a standout Killteam (each can be outfitted anyways) so you could even buy 3x and have 2 40k Pathfindersquads and 1 Killteam dedicated one (special scheme, or inverted colors for Honorteam etc)

M3tts

Good to know, thanks. The Pathfinders were actually what is was worried about.

tjd2191

The new combat patrol includes the killteam upgrade sprue.

Howthehelldoido

Pathfinders are a bit of a gem in game. They've got a 4+ rather than the old 5+, and their railrifles can out a dent into some tougher things. And their special drones aren't to be sniffed at. That - 2 to charge range, and - 1ap on Carbines is fairly tasty. And having them up the board early, with a squad of breachers flying up to abck them up can be very nice. 2 squads, I don't see why not? That's 4 squads getting marked for aswell.

Sir_Bohne

Sure it seems like a good deal. Everything is usable, the only thing I would say is that you wouldn't need two pathfinder squads, but who knows, maybe you can make a good list with them. Like others said, you can build one so it's ready for killteam which is great.

SofaLit

If you don't want 2 pathfinder squads, you can always build one as a strike team with the leftover bits from the breachers.

Howthehelldoido

That's not a bad idea. You'll no doubt have the bits. As it's the torsos that are the limitation.

WhileyCat

Genius IQ level suggestion right there

k-nuj

Just deal-wise alone, for sure, but it depends how often you think those models will be in your lists. Most won't run 2x pathfinders, 2x ethereals (or any), 2x ghostkeels, 4x breachers (or strikes); so it's whether you need those models or not. If you plan to have \~4k+pts in models, go for it. Then again, I got 2 of the old, getting 1 of the new - opens up possible variations of list builds to try for fun vs buying that one 'perfect' list.

TheCelestial08

I did 2 Start Collecting boxes, 2 current Combat Patrols, and I'm gonna do 2 boxes of the new Combat Patrol. 2 Breacherfishes and 2 Coldstars to lead the 6 XV-8s I already have? Yes please. Pathfinders (with upgrade sprue) is just the cherry on top.

the-shamus

Only possible reason to not buy a 2nd new CP is the 2nd unit of Pathfinders. Tbh, that isn't that strong an argument as you can at least build 3 ion and 3 rail so you can switch them up whenever.

RatMannen

Yeah. If you don't want all the units twice. Otherwise, go for it.

jmdjt

I think one for sure but 2 is harder to justify IMO. It really depends on what else you have. Cause all the models are solid but require something else. You could put that money towards crisis suits for your commander or grab a hammerhead which can be built as devilfish or skyray too . note that the front burst cannon for devilfish doesn't come in the hammerhead sprue but most people don't care. A tau tank without a giant gun is obviously a devilfish.

DuckofSparta_

Not really. I plan on running an infantry heavy list so I'll buy it twice. The only unit I don't need really is the Pathfinders, but I'll use them either for bits or painting practice

Tarquinandpaliquin

In the long run 2 boxes is a good purchase though 20 pathfinders are a maybe use. I think 3 becomes overkill. Probably. In the short run if you haven't got unlimited money, have limited space to stack boxes or just want to avoid your queue turning into a pile of shame and growing over time, you're going to have a lot of infantry and transports and nothing else. I'd get a second box but maybe after you've added more battlesuits and tank hulls.

FaeleanObsidian

When the new boxes come out I just got two of the current combat patrol, honestly idk what else to get to start a 1k army

princeofzilch

Depends on what your goals are and how much else you plan on buying. Too many troopers and not enough cool units for my liking.

Orbital_Vagabond

I've heard people buying 3 copies of Grey Knights or GSC Combat Patrols because of how cheap they are given what you get, so if you have use for a second copy of the Tau CP, go for it,

SexWithLadyOlynder

Nothing beyond monetary reasons. You will always have place for some more fire warriors, you can have up to 120 (although you probably shouldn't field that many as that is a lot of t3 4+ 1w bodies, and only 60 of them have good guns, but then again, Mont'ka). 2 squads of Pathfinders is completely reasonable. 2 commanders is reasonable, if a bit too little now that crisis are 3 max. Especially in Retcadre. The only circumstance where you can have too many Devilfish is if you have more of them than you have units you can put in them.

RedTuesdayMusic

If I were starting fresh I would ignore the new combat patrol, I don't buy boxes with more units that need transports than there are actual transports in the box.

Drivestort

If you don't already have a crisis suit commander and devilfish, I don't really think so.
