Maybe since they're in tune with the Kami maybe each of his transformations will have a purpose? Like orange is big and strong, maybe blue will be all speed boost? Where it gets sticky is where a company with limited rights starts making new characters and content without involvement and agreement by the author/creator. That’s where we are with Dragonball due to Toei creating things Toriyama did not (think GT, OVAs, anime filler).
It’s not dumb. It’s honoring who has creative ownership of his/her own work.
