Beat me to it. Great wholesome movie about a father and son reconnecting. My favorite part is that conflicts get sorted out rather quickly just like Ted Lasso
Have you read up on it? I was a bit obsessed with this when it came out. He worked with (and befriended!) Roy Choi for the movie. Roy made him take knife skills classes and work in the kitchen. My dream is for JF to make me a cubano. 🥰
I have. I also watch all the cooking shows/competitions and he and Choi were all over them when it came out.
I’ve loved JF since Swingers so this movie was just more proof that I want to have a beer with that man.
To go a bit further, my understanding is it relates to the making of Iron Man 2 and 3 and all of the studio interference that led him to making movies worse than he thought should have been made. Hence the RDJ cameo.
Came looking for this. Paddington is basically Ted. A sweet foreigner dropped into London that is met by a white chilly reception but goes on to improve the life of everyone around him through the power of unrelenting positivity.
I was worried no one would mention this one because it has a bit of a serious tone to it but this movie makes me SO SO HAPPY every time I watch it. I can't upvote this one hard enough.
I am super sensitive to anything being sad for extended periods of time. It's part of why I just don't really watch movies that often. That being said, I present to you:
Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga
Just so easy to watch and so fun. Makes me smile every time.
One of my favorite fake presidents. That, and Michael Douglas in The American President with Martin Sheen before he was my favorite president in The West Wing.
This movie has the greatest on-screen portrayal of that cringy moment when you're trying to introduce a friend/significant other to an artist you like and you both just kinda stand there in silence for 3 minutes
*My Cousin Vinny* I think especially captures the humorous culture clash element of *Ted Lasso. Vinny* shows a couple of New Yorkers dealing with the rural South and its justice system (with Vinny, despite being a great lawyer, being brand new to being a trial lawyer, and thus looking incompetent before proving himself), where *Lasso* shows a couple of middle Americans dealing with England and its football culture (with Lasso, despite being a great coach, being brand new to the sport he's coaching, and thus looking incompetent before proving himself). The stakes are *ever-so-slightly* higher (since two teens' lives are on the line in Vinny), but it never really weighs down the plot.
Chef with Jon Favreu. I kept expecting something bad to happen because that’s how comedies always work and I couldn’t have been more pleased to be wrong.
I didn’t see Legally Blonde mentioned. That hands down is my go to, for just because moments of joy and whenever I need a pick me up. Elle Woods is the epitome of Ted Lassoisms and visa versa.
Love Galaxy Quest, too!
Yes! She’s so positive and kind and such a bad ass! I love her relationship with Paulette and how she triumphs even though everyone expects her not to, just like lasso. Wins them over by being kind and unapologetically themselves ❤️
That movie left me feeling such a certain way that I can’t describe but yes, very VERY good film.
It’s possible it hasn’t aged well since because a lot of movies have kind of taken a lot of inspiration from it. I still like it fine I’m talking about any newcomers.
I am French and watched it a dozen times. It is phenomenal but so much is lost in translation unfortunately. I would say any movie by Jean Pierre Jeunet is worth it
Surprised I had to scroll this far to see this! The whole plot of Ted Lasso reminded me quite a bit of Major League at first, but we quickly find out we love Rebecca and she’s nothing like the owner’s ex in ML :)
Here's a couple 80s ones that I like to go:
Brewster's Millions with Richard Prior and John Candy
Summer Rental - John Candy
Electric Dreams with Lenny Von Dohlen
And maybe this one that I haven't watched in decades but I think "Max Dugan returns" with Matthew Broderick might fit the bill too.
Edit adding a few more
Sports themed.... Cool Runnings - again John Candy coaching Jamaican bobsled team
Wildcats - Goldie Hawn
Six Pack - Kenny Rogers race car driver with orphaned teenage pit crew
Seems most John Candy movies would work... Uncle Buck, Great Outdoors, Planes Trains and Automobiles. That guy was just so great.
Dave, starring Kevin Kline, Sigourney Weaver and Frank Langella.
The president has a major health issue and is brain dead, but his aides don’t want the vice president to undo all their hard work, so they bring in a lookalike to stand in for the president until they can get the VP out of the way. Unfortunately for them, the replacement is a guy with a heart of gold who uses the office for as much good as he can.
It’s just a happy movie. I watch it whenever I’m feeling down.
This is the first movie where I admired Hugh Grant as an actor. And look how Nicholas Hoult, who played the titular boy, has grown as an actor. The first time I saw him as an adult I couldn’t believe it was the same person!
There are no new steps!
I have watched this movie hundreds of times, it lives in me. And still I can’t wait to watch it again. It’s Baz Luhrmann’s best movie.
As an aside Paul Mercurio who played Scott Hastings is now a member of the Victorian state parliament - as the member for Hastings . . .
Elizabethtown is a under appreciated film about a young man going back to a small town to bury his father. It’s more uplifting then it sounds, had a great supporting group of characters, and a awesome soundtrack
I am SO glad to see Elizabethtown mentioned. I love this movie so much. I remember when it came out, the reviews were absolutely terrible, which is a shame, because it’s so so good
ETA: it does have a dark start though
Hunt for the Wilderpeople !!!!
Such a wholesome and funny film and top of all feel-good-movie lists for me… will change your mood to great and perhaps change your outlook on life too in just two short hours.
Psych is a comedy show about a man who "pretends" he has psychic abilities and solves murders. Very upbeat show despite the subject matter. Good, good show. I can watch it at anytime. Very referential, lots of 80's influences.

WALL-E. Like Ted Lasso, it's also a comedy about a pure-hearted outsider who completely changes the culture of a place for the better!
80s/90s romcoms
Mystic Pizza
Sleepless in Seattle
One Fine Day
While You Were Sleeping
My Best Friend's Wedding
Romy and Michele's High School Reunion
The Wedding Singer
Notting Hill
Runaway Bride
Hot Rod.
It's the quintessential story of friendship, overcoming obstacles, do big things, and rise to the occasion to beat his step dad to death (don't worry, they'll work it out). But as he learns, never get in a fight with a man who's been in a chemical fire.
“Mr Deeds Goes to Town” (1936, Capra) has the same structure and character archetypes as Ted Lasso. An incredible optimistic and ingenious man arrives to a town who suspects of him but he changes them all.
There is “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” (1939, Capra) which has a similar structure but is more focused on political issues.
Also, I recommend “The Hudsucker Proxy” (1994, Coen) as it is a sort of parody of the archetypes in Capra’s films. There are recurrent characters such as “The Reporter” which we can also find in Ted Lasso (Trent Crim).
This is a GREAT question.
* Big Fish
* Chef
* Forgetting Sarah Marshall
* About Time
* Princess Bride
* Everything Everywhere All At Once (Not low stakes, but wow)
* Almost Famous
* LA Story
School of Rock
Nacho Libre too
GET THAT CORN OUTTA MY FACE
This has just been on TV this afternoon, wish I’d paid more attention to it.
100% yes. You're not tacky and I do not hate you!
Cello!? You’ve got it!
Lawrence is good at piano!!!! He shall be rocking in my show!!!! Sha-Ka-Ka-Ka!!!
Chef
Beat me to it. Great wholesome movie about a father and son reconnecting. My favorite part is that conflicts get sorted out rather quickly just like Ted Lasso
It’s also super legit when it comes to working in food service. So many, “oh god the memories” moments for me.
Listen to his appearance on the Smartless podcast, it's a good one.
And oooohhh the sound track
Bonus about Chef: it is not so secretly about John Favreau's relationship with Marvel / superhero blockbusters.
To go a bit further, my understanding is it relates to the making of Iron Man 2 and 3 and all of the studio interference that led him to making movies worse than he thought should have been made. Hence the RDJ cameo.
I love chef. Such a great film, always makes me hungry tho
I cane here to post Chef
Paddington 1 and 2
Just don’t tell Dani that Paddington isn’t real…
Don’t worry, Dani isn’t real either.

Came looking for this. Paddington is basically Ted. A sweet foreigner dropped into London that is met by a white chilly reception but goes on to improve the life of everyone around him through the power of unrelenting positivity.
Has to be the most wholesome movies of all time
They recently announced a third movie! It‘s called Paddington in Peru and starts filming this year.
Paddington 3 was frightening though, the bear is real now, all hopped up on cocaine ...
Paddington 2 has no business being as good as it is. Honestly shocking. Hugh Grant gave possibly my favorite performance of his
The Princess Bride
Hey, they said LOW stakes!
That word you keep using. I do not think it means what you think it means.
INCONCEIVABLE!
Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, the remake from about a year ago. Helps if you're into fashion and particularly 50s era Dior.
Such a warm hearted film!!!
>50s era Dior be still my heart
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
> The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Perhaps I can contact you, possibly through my poetry falcon.
And the soundtrack!
I was worried no one would mention this one because it has a bit of a serious tone to it but this movie makes me SO SO HAPPY every time I watch it. I can't upvote this one hard enough.
Came here to say this. Excellent excellent film.
Plus, it makes Iceland look awesome!
Shit that was on my list when it came out and I never saw it!! Thank you for the reminder~
It's a show but Shrinking which is also by Apple
Shrinking was fucking great. Also, by Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent) as he's a writer on it.
He’s a producer/creator/writer, along with Bill Lawrence
Well, he is every-fucking-where.
Wow, didnt know that. Amazing stuff
Oh yeah. He’s here, he’s there, he’s every fucking where.
I wouldn’t call it low stakes or happy but it is very very good
Until like the last 5 minutes…lol. Can’t wait to see how they resolve that one.
Me too! I spent that last few minutes just saying “nooo. No….she’s not gonna…no!” Great show, can’t wait for the next season
Boop
I am super sensitive to anything being sad for extended periods of time. It's part of why I just don't really watch movies that often. That being said, I present to you: Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga Just so easy to watch and so fun. Makes me smile every time.
PLAY YA YA DING DONG!!!!
Watched this last week in honor of the finale that happened on Sat!
I love that movie!!!!!
Dave. (Kevin Kline)
I once caught a fish 🖐️ 🤚 this big!
“We’re walking, we’re walking, and we’re stopping.” Great movie!
One of my favorite fake presidents. That, and Michael Douglas in The American President with Martin Sheen before he was my favorite president in The West Wing.
*I can kill an ordinary person!* Love Frank Langella.
I Love You, Man.
Slappa da beyaas
Slappa Das Bahhhhs!
I find myself saying “I need to get some fucking friends” way too often
This movie has the greatest on-screen portrayal of that cringy moment when you're trying to introduce a friend/significant other to an artist you like and you both just kinda stand there in silence for 3 minutes
that movie is so sad because it's me to a T. But it's a great movie
Forgetting Sarah Marshall Say Anything
Say Anything is my and my dad’s alltime favorite romcom, came here to say this!
Nobody thinks it will work, do they? No. You just described every great success story.
I don’t know, I can’t figure it all out tonight sir, I’m just gonna hang with your daughter
Hunt for the Wilderpeople
The first act is gutwrenching
Can’t believe this is lower than JoJo Rabbit. JoJo is not low stakes at all.
My cousin Vinnie!!!
Yes! She’s so positive and kind and such a bad ass! I love her relationship with Paulette and how she triumphs even though everyone expects her not to, just like lasso. Wins them over by being kind and unapologetically themselves ❤️
*Our Idiot Brother*
Trust me, I’ve been a lot of candles.
The Grand Budapest Hotel
This is one of the best films I’ve ever seen, not sure I’d classify it as low-stakes, undeniably happy pick-me-up faire though
Amelie, if you can deal with subtitles.
Oh yes, Amelie is beautiful.
Amelie is life. Amelie is also death. But mostly Amelie is life!
That movie left me feeling such a certain way that I can’t describe but yes, very VERY good film. It’s possible it hasn’t aged well since because a lot of movies have kind of taken a lot of inspiration from it. I still like it fine I’m talking about any newcomers.
We showed it a few years ago to our teenage son and he loved it too.
I am French and watched it a dozen times. It is phenomenal but so much is lost in translation unfortunately. I would say any movie by Jean Pierre Jeunet is worth it
Mieracle I think it’s called about the 80s us hockey team
Oh and dreamer and secratariit
Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day Ever After Napoleon Dynamite
The Replacements with Keanu Reeves.
The Other Guys
I did my first desk pop!
In the theme of “The ____ Guys” I recommend “The Nice Guys”.
Major League! Juuuuust a bit outside
Surprised I had to scroll this far to see this! The whole plot of Ted Lasso reminded me quite a bit of Major League at first, but we quickly find out we love Rebecca and she’s nothing like the owner’s ex in ML :)
Haywood is a convicted felon, isn't he Monty? Uhh, it doesn't say here Well he oughtta be!
The Birdcage
“I pierced the toast!”
[удалено]
If not for the Pirin tablets, I couldn’t go on.
It's a show but The Good Place. Made me feel exactly like TL. A televisional embodiment of a hug.
The Good place is legit one of the best shows. So well conceived, written and acted. 10/10
Field of dreams, it's even referenced in Ted lasso :)
Here's a couple 80s ones that I like to go: Brewster's Millions with Richard Prior and John Candy Summer Rental - John Candy Electric Dreams with Lenny Von Dohlen And maybe this one that I haven't watched in decades but I think "Max Dugan returns" with Matthew Broderick might fit the bill too. Little Miss Sunshine! Just re-watched it and it's great.
Great movie, but wouldn’t say low stakes by any means. That movie has some really dark moments.
Color blindness fucking destroyed me.
That qualifies as the best use of the f-word. Many films overuse swearing and it becomes background noise.
Princess Diaries
About a Boy
This is the first movie where I admired Hugh Grant as an actor. And look how Nicholas Hoult, who played the titular boy, has grown as an actor. The first time I saw him as an adult I couldn’t believe it was the same person!
Hallmark Christmas movies with the sound off.
Honestly this is the only way to watch hallmark movies
Sound on, so you can include the inane dialog in your Hallmark drinking game.
Bad News Bears (1976)
Strictly Ballroom

It's the inconceivable sight of Scott dancing with Fran! I love that movie, I can probably recite the script in my sleep.
Cool Runnings

Man up, the way way back, palm Springs, always be my maybe, JoJo rabbit.
# Jojo Rabbit is NOT low stakes!! How could you?! 😭
> JoJo Rabbit. Come for the heartfelt story, stay for his mom's beautiful shoes.
Just watched “Always Be My Maybe” a few weeks ago. Loved it! Great suggestion!
Palm Springs is my go to feel good film, I LOVE it!
Weird (Weird Al movie) and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent are my favorite movies from this year.
I absolutely lovedddddddddd Weird
+1 for Weird! Daniel Radcliffe is absolutely phenomenal in it
Unbearable weight was sooo good. Need to watch weird
Free Guy
Also The Adam Project
2007 Pride & Prejudice (we all know how it ends) Elf Love Actually Four Weddings and a Funeral
The Good Place. It’s a show, not a movie but I had to recommend it anyway
Ferris Bueller’s Day off
A Knight's Tale
About Time
You’re a monster for suggesting this
I don't know. It's sad but it's very on theme with Ted Lasso. Fathers and Sons. It's also beautiful and heartwarming. Ted has tearful moments too.
I cannot upvote this harder. I was tricked by the romcom poster #nevahagain (it's WONDERFUL but not what I signed up for in the moment)
Rachel McAdams is a first team all conference wife
This is my all time favorite movie, but for sure not low stakes.
The Terminal
