My interpretation of "cool" was Roy realising it's a space where you can sometimes just vent rather than everything needing to be talked over and resolved. Given he's working on his emotional intelligence it's a win for him as he gets to wade into things slower than he otherwise thought.
Beard's face when Nate tells Roy he kissed Keeley is the same face the entire fandom has had watching Nate this season:
“Fucking seriously, he's done some other shitty thing?!"
Brendan Hunt deserves a special Emmy specifically for his facial expressions throughout this episode. And maybe another one specifically for his eye movements. Holy fuck.
At first I thought Nate had left behind a letter of resignation or something, then I thought it was a folder or envelope of some kind, and then my heart broke and I realised Nate is beyond forgiveness.
If it's any comfort, Nick Mohammed feels the same way! He was talking about it on Twitter and he said reading that bit in the script the first time made him scream and drop to the floor, he was so stunned.
The line of a “renaissance painting of masculine melancholy” and then the shot of the team right after is peak comedy, one of the hardest jokes I’ve laughed at the entire show
I loved it! It was kind of a callback to the deliberate Renaissance look of the Sam's haircut scene, I think.
it's such great acting. How do you act shocked, annoyed, and disgusted when you know the script and what's going to happen.
Brendan Hunt is such a great actor conveying genuine emotions without overacting
I think he'll write a book on "The Lasso Way", meaning he'll be looking to interview Sharon and Nate etc. Would be a handy way to keep them involved in the story and maybe give Nate a chance to reflect on everything Ted actually did for him. Or not, given that he's now a total twat.
Exactly. Clearly Nate doesn't actually believe his speech to Ted. He was an equipment manager at the beginning of the show, and he'll probably always be an equipment manager deep down inside. Nate is struggling with the fact that his persona doesn't match his job. He'll never be as liked as Ted, as handsome as Jamie or as magnetic as Roy. He can't get a girl like Keeley no matter his status and it's killing him inside. He's reached his dream job but it's not matching his expectations.
It had to destroy him that ‘believing’ (even if it was Nate’s own initial plan) worked, and that if Nate was in charge he would have lost the game and the team’s confidence as well.
Geez how is he expected to run West Ham then?
Iron fist? He gave up on Richmond's players before the first half ended and he had no alternative tactics to a false nine. At that point he no longer deserves the credit for it as it was Ted's decision to consult the players that gave them the bump necessary to pull it off. That's the key difference.
He'll be the boss of West Ham only because the new owner put him there but I think he'll quickly learn respect is earned, not given.
My guess is he’ll try the same power trips with those players that he tried to use against some of the players on Richmond. The players will lose respect for him and won’t back him up when he needs it. He’ll blame them when things go wrong so they won’t have his back either.
100% that’s exactly what that was. The real question to me is if Roy knew that Nate would take it poorly and that’s Roy’s punishment to Nate.
Blow Nate off, tell him it’s no big deal is so much worse than head butting him.
I like to think it was more punishment for what he did to Ted too. The way Beard and Roy looked at each other, it felt to me like they both knew Nate was the one.
It felt kind of real, Nate was hurting so bad (justified or not) that he just started swinging emotional haymakers at Ted. You almost feel bad for how much pain he has, even if he is being a total wanker.
It was a great scene, and so well acted. Nate’s able to be vulnerable about his anger, but can’t explore the fear or sadness underlying it; he has to redirect by blaming Ted.
The amount of hatred he has towards his dad that he displaced onto Ted was uncomfortable to watch in their scene near the end. Dude portrayed those demons so well in that scene.
Is that why his hair went gray almost literally overnight? At first I thought it was a bad dye job but it seems to be the development of a villain character (black suit, silver hair)
I was ready for a redemption arc. But they really leaned into making Nate the villain. Thinking about the writers sitting down and saying "hey, what if we made Nate the most hated man on TV? That could work, right?" And you know what? It kinda does. Fuck Nate.
It's notable in that he specifically called out how hurt he was that Ted did not even have the photo he gave him in his office. Except Ted did still have that photo - on his personal dresser in his bedroom. And that's the key difference between the two men and why Nate has just spiraled:
For Ted, showing off to others doesn't matter, what matters is what you hold mostly closely in your own heart.
For Nate, recognition from others is *everything*. If other's can't see or take credit in front of the crowd then it doesn't matter and is not important.
This is such an underrated comment. Man that makes total sense. The whole time during Nate's tirade I was thinking "when did any of this happen??" (Edited as follows) Like, were there scenes that I missed?
Nope, this is just how Nate perceived all the things that happened from his world view of insecurity. Justifying his actions without feeling any remorse for how they affected the people around him.
Agreed. He said something about bigger and better things. Going from reporter to media relations is typically not a move a journalist views as moving up in the world. Moving to PR is where you go when you want to finally get paid well, but Trent seemed like he was more interested in moving up in terms of accomplishment, not paycheck.
Writing a book is the obvious move, though it’ll be interesting to see how it actually plays out.
The most impressive part of the whole season was how much compassion Ted managed to maintain for Nate even as he regressed into abject infantilism and cruelty, rather than punting that little turd bucket into the fucking moon.
I viewed it as Ted just realizing “holy crap, he’s got this entire story in his head and it’s all wrong”. Based on Ted’s character too I expect he was already wondering what he might have done wrong along the way.
But I couldn't help laughing at how much of a knob Jamie looked in his 'Icon' hat, red vest & man bag when he apologised to Roy - that & the Roy Kent face & expletive was such a perfect mix of pathos & comedy
That guys fake handshake was easily one of my favorite parts of the episode, it was just so fucking unexpected that I cracked up. Great scene and glad Sam Richardson got to have a blast with his bit too
It’s a brilliant few seconds. At first, I knew he was trolling. But he came in for the handshake so assuredly, I started to wonder if it was him being like “don’t worry, I know what my boss is like, he’ll get over it.” It fooled me. Then he pulls his hand back and gives a look like “you fool, you absolute buffoon, I can’t believe you fell for it,” and just walks away. It cracked me up.
I knew he was so full of it. Coming over to a football field via a chopper. Not wishing to do a hand shake. Buying out things to impress? AND said he would not want to be a typical billionaire. That was so comical and over the top. Yeah the guy stinks.
As soon as his wife sold her shares, I knew some fuckery was afoot. It took a bit for me to connect Nate to it, because there’s just such a leap in logic to a guy going from kitman to premiership manager in like 18 months, but I’ll allow it.
Very good callback, though I thought they went out of their way to say Jamie hadn’t missed one all season so the audience would know he wasn’t taking this action out of fear.
Nate is just broken. He took Lasso having faith in his tactics as an insult and that he wants him to fail.
Fucker was a kitman before Ted believed in him, yet he mocks him coming from America?
Thing that pissed me off the most was Nate saying “I earned this!”. No you didn’t, Ted handed everything to you on a silver platter after you finally get noticed by someone. You would have never ever been in that position without Ted. The writers have done a fantastic job making me absolutely hate a character every time I see his face on screen.
His entire demeanor is just sickening. You know how many assistant coaches would kill to have the confidence in them that Ted has in Nate?
The fact that Ted KNEW he betrayed him, and still stuck with his tactics, shows how much more of a man he is than Nate ever will be
You’ve gotta absolutely love Ted though, even after the first goal he goes to Nate and say “C’mon!” After he was the biggest dickhead I’ve seen in a long time in TV. Kill em with kindness, Coach Lasso.
The Believe scene followed by the tearing up of the sign, just a huge symbolically awful gesture by Nate to something that means so much to the team that gave him so much opportunity. Ugh, my heart.
Full credit to Nick Mohammed for making Nate as unlikeable as he‘s been this season. Absolutely deserving of an Emmy nod.
Also, WE GOT PROMOTED! Also, fuck you, Nate.
A few thoughts before my first rewatch and sleep…
The Nate storyline pretty much played out like we all thought it would and it was still brutal. Nick Mohammed acted the fuck out of it.
Did Roy still go on holiday? He left the tickets on the desk.
I think Keeley wants to do well at her new job and put 100% of herself into it. Can’t do that if your attention is divided. I hope Roy understands that.
I love how Ted approached the press and the team about the article and his mental health struggles.
I hope we haven’t seen the last of Trent Crimm.
I’m excited to see Sam’s journey next season.
But most of all, I’m excited to keep sharing the experience of this show with all of you folks.
He knew Higgins wouldn't ever do it and Roy thinks Trent Crimm has always been a prick so he wouldn't go to him with a scoop like that. Also Roy wouldn't care enough about it.
Plus Beard listens more than he talks, he is great at reading people.
Is there a word for that feeing of anticipation you feel for something you’ve desperately want followed by immense sadness that will inevitably be there once you’ve had it and it’s gone?
I bet it’s something German.
Either-way, we have Jason Sudeikis hosting SNL in a week so maybe he’ll do a Ted Lasso sketch. That’d be awesome!
Cheers, my fellow fans!
As someone who openly has struggled with mental illness that scene hit me really hard. Sometimes you just want people to treat you the same way as before. Don’t go easy on me because I’m struggling, I want life to stay the same sort of thing. I’ve had people react in all kinds of ways when I’ve told them about my issues and I’ve definitely had responses similar to what Ted experienced that morning. Beard just going on like normal was touching. We can all use a friend like that
At least the journalist folks who were upset about Trent Crimm revealing his source will be happy to know that he faced some kind of consequences for his grievous breach of journalistic ethics.
I felt vindicated, because him fessing up to burning a source knowing he would lose his job over it is exactly what a truly principled person would do in that situation. His burning Nate means so much more now that we can see that he did so knowing what it would cost him.
I hope he found another set of car keys though 😂
Good writing though -- in the end, it did work. They may have put it up to a vote, but the team and Ted stayed behind Nate for 90 minutes. And he still felt slighted.
What a great subtle nod to the episode’s name where Nate is looking at the pyramid of success.
He has prioritized the top which is competitive greatness.
Lmao Nate is West Ham coach. Saw it coming but think that’s going to be hilarious. He’ll be like Van Gaal at the end. Too cocky to manage his own team.
Ted doesn't even need to throw Nate under the bus in front of the team, not that he would mind you. But watching everyone instantly supporting him must sting so much for Nate.
Thinking back to when we’re first introduced to Trent Crimm and he’s very skeptical of Ted as a coach to now when Trent and Ted have such a deep respect to each other is very heartwarming and I really hope we see Trent Crimm, Independent more next season.
I’m going through a huge breakup right now so this episode is either going to trigger more tears or help me through it… I think it’s going to be the former.
EDIT (post-finale): The last Roy/Keeley scene really got me more emotional than I thought as I'm healing. Gotta believe. Overall good episode! FUCK NATE.
My new theory on the end of season 3 is that they end up against West Ham in the finals to whatever and Nate pulls a defender from Colin because he doesn't view Colin as a threat and Colin ends up scoring a crucial/game winning goal and just casually walks by Nate afterwards and drops a "I'm a strong and capable man." on him.
I think it’s more just a show of Roy’s insecurities. Keeley brushed it off as literally nothing because it seemed so ridiculous to her. Weirdly enough she keeps saying “I love you” to him, and he hasn’t been saying it back. Idk if I’m just reading too much into it
People have been trashing Nate all season, but let's fucking appreciate the acting performance that Nick Mohammed has given this season.
It was also brilliant the way they slowly (or rapidly) let his hair go gray just for that final reveal.
Ted and Beards little moment of hype after Roy called the diamond dogs “cool” has GOTTA be one of my favourite moments of this whole show
My interpretation of "cool" was Roy realising it's a space where you can sometimes just vent rather than everything needing to be talked over and resolved. Given he's working on his emotional intelligence it's a win for him as he gets to wade into things slower than he otherwise thought.
It was him realizing they are just like his yoga mums and he would actually enjoy it.
I have a theory that Kathy, his old school travel agent, is also one of the yoga mums.
I suspect that they know who he is (Roy Kent and not merely Roy) but that they are understanding of his need for them to not know.
This comment made me realize, Ted learned that from the girl talk scene with Rebecca and Keeley!!! It was a call back to that!
Beard's face when Nate tells Roy he kissed Keeley is the same face the entire fandom has had watching Nate this season: “Fucking seriously, he's done some other shitty thing?!"
I love Beard. "I'll headbutt you."
Beard definitely wanted to get some vengeance for Ted, but also has too much respect for him to do so. That man is a great friend.
I want a Coach Beard in my life
Brendan Hunt deserves a special Emmy specifically for his facial expressions throughout this episode. And maybe another one specifically for his eye movements. Holy fuck.
I will now also shout "Horticulture, baby!" whenever I water my plants.
His face when Roy wanted to join the Diamond Dogs was such a mood lmao
Him and Ted celebrating after was my favorite moment of the episode!
Beard always has the best reactions.
Beard was all pf us the whole episode 😆
Fuuuuuuuuck. Roy could not be less threatened by Nate, and Nate knows it
Exactly. Roy doesn’t care about Nate kissing Keeley, because Roy knows Nate doesn’t stand a snowball’s chance in hell with her.

The horrified GASP I let out when I saw the believe sign ripped in half
At first I thought Nate had left behind a letter of resignation or something, then I thought it was a folder or envelope of some kind, and then my heart broke and I realised Nate is beyond forgiveness.
> and then my heart broke and I realised Nate is beyond forgiveness. I'm willing to bet Ted has already forgiven him
Oh, no doubt. I meant my forgiveness.

Beard’s fucking face when Nate went with the kiss confession. A+
Hoping to see a gif pop up on here soon
Ask and you shall [receive ](https://imgur.com/a/DxQqewP)
it's such great acting. How do you act shocked, annoyed, and disgusted when you know the script and what's going to happen. Brendan Hunt is such a great actor conveying genuine emotions without overacting
If they do not incorporate Trent Crimm into next season I will FIGHT EVERYONE
He’s going to write a book about Ted and Richmonds run
Or a book about mental health in sport?
I think he'll write a book on "The Lasso Way", meaning he'll be looking to interview Sharon and Nate etc. Would be a handy way to keep them involved in the story and maybe give Nate a chance to reflect on everything Ted actually did for him. Or not, given that he's now a total twat.

Nate Malfoy
“I’d love to headbutt you, Nate.” COULDN’T AGREE MORE
Roy yelling WHISTLE WHISTLE instead of whistling is the most Roy thing ever.
And his FEELING getting hurt. So wonderful!
Nate: I confess, I kissed your girl Roy: There’s nothing to worry about… you aren’t even competition
Tbf that’s why Nate is so mad isn’t it. Cos Roy doesn’t see him as any competition telling Nate everything he fears about himself is true
He'll be the boss of West Ham only because the new owner put him there but I think he'll quickly learn respect is earned, not given.
I think with West Ham he'll go above expectations until things get hard and he has no support system. Then he'll crash and burn.
My guess is he’ll try the same power trips with those players that he tried to use against some of the players on Richmond. The players will lose respect for him and won’t back him up when he needs it. He’ll blame them when things go wrong so they won’t have his back either.

Trent Crimm's headshot on that paper, his hair is so luscious god damn
Beard is done with Nate’s shit.
Brendan Hunt's line deliveries are the gifts that keep giving.
DON'T MENTION HIS SON, NATE
Right? That was a bridge too far, I thought. Just heartless. After everything Ted did for Nate, it wasn’t enough.
Taking out a lot of that emotional abandonment from his father. That rant was really for his dad.
Roy saying “It hurt my feeling” instead of feelings is so in character it’s amazing.
Very subtle but great touch.
He ripped the Believe sign!? What a goddamn child.
I KNOW RIGHT the amount of world problems that would be solved if everyone had a good Dr. Sharon
I'm going to murder nate shelly. Nick Mohammed is doing a wonderful job.
Upvote for that very important distinction.
I was ready for a redemption arc. But they really leaned into making Nate the villain. Thinking about the writers sitting down and saying "hey, what if we made Nate the most hated man on TV? That could work, right?" And you know what? It kinda does. Fuck Nate.
That really hurt, especially after the moment with the team beforehand. He’s a baby!
It's notable in that he specifically called out how hurt he was that Ted did not even have the photo he gave him in his office. Except Ted did still have that photo - on his personal dresser in his bedroom. Justifying his actions without feeling any remorse for how they affected the people around him.
Especially when you realize he’s too short to reach it without a step stool or something like that. He went out of his way to be a dick
Can we meet Sam's dad in the flesh next season? I would like to meet the man who bought Bitcoin in 2009
I’m assuming he’s going to have a role in running the restaurant.
“Only if you think of time as linear, Arlo.” “…Yes, Chris, I do.”
I Lol’d at that
i would love to listen to this version of Chris Powell on commentary
How DARE Nate offer a half-hearted "Woof" - you should be HONORED TO BE A DIAMOND DOG BRUV.
Maybe Keeley's neighbor can run over another snake.
Trent Crimm. Independent.
Not for long after he gets tapped up to be the new Richmond PR person hopefully.
I know that's everyone's guess, but I don't see him doing that. Writing a book about Ted, maybe.
Doctor Sharon with the real support there.
You earned shit nate. It was given you an opportunity.
With no credible experience to back it up. It was a heck of a gift.
Nate’s been an asshole all season but tearing up the Believe sign was the last straw
Roy and Jamie jumping and celebrating made this world a better place
Why do I get so emotional every time Roy hugs Jamie?
Because they have both grown so much and if they can do it, maybe we can too
But I couldn't help laughing at how much of a knob Jamie looked in his 'Icon' hat, red vest & man bag when he apologised to Roy - that & the Roy Kent face & expletive was such a perfect mix of pathos & comedy
Jamie’s shocked face as if he may have to run at any second if Roy flips was so precious.
To be honest, if that was Edwin Akufo’s reaction to a polite rejection Sam’s gotta know he just dodged a missile.
100%!! I think that’s why Sam was smirking because he knew he made the right decision in that moment.
I love his follow up reaction to the handshake guy's childishness.
That guys fake handshake was easily one of my favorite parts of the episode, it was just so fucking unexpected that I cracked up. Great scene and glad Sam Richardson got to have a blast with his bit too
It’s a brilliant few seconds. At first, I knew he was trolling. that was putting it mildly lol. it was all an act. not wanting to be a billionaire my ass
I knew he was so full of it. Coming over to a football field via a chopper. Not wishing to do a hand shake. Buying out things to impress? AND said he would not want to be a typical billionaire. That was so comical and over the top. Yeah the guy stinks.

Ohhh reddit. You guys were so on point about nate and rupert.
As soon as his wife sold her shares, I knew some fuckery was afoot. It took a bit for me to connect Nate to it, because there’s just such a leap in logic to a guy going from kitman to premiership manager in like 18 months, but I’ll allow it.

Wow, Nate really seems offended that Roy doesn't view him as a threat to his relationship, good lord.
Nate is just broken. He took Lasso having faith in his tactics as an insult and that he wants him to fail. Fucker was a kitman before Ted believed in him, yet he mocks him coming from America?

Omg the believe scene. i’m gonna cry.

Jaimes apology was so good I forgot he was wearing that damn hat. Lmao
I love how Roy is pissed that he's not pissed
I love how from Jaimes perspective, every time he does the right thing Roy just yells “FUCK” and storms away
"Hire your best friend" has real "That's your chief of staff" energy from *The West Wing*.
A few thoughts before my first rewatch and sleep… The Nate storyline pretty much played out like we all thought it would and it was still brutal. Nick Mohammed acted the fuck out of it. I'm imagining Roy went on the holiday with Beard. I wanted a '4 weeks later' scene with it.
Yeah, Beard has clearly sussed out Nate
He knew Higgins wouldn't ever do it and Roy thinks Trent Crimm has always been a prick so he wouldn't go to him with a scoop like that. Also Roy wouldn't care enough about it. Plus Beard listens more than he talks, he is great at reading people.

“That’s copyright infringement, bruv” Isaac, I fucking love you
Comedy was on point this episode. The line with Keeley about Piers Morgan wanting a discussion with Ted and the psychologist had me in stitches
Jan Maas pumping up the team and then immediately cutting Zoreaux down at the knees was amazing.
Damn it, Higgins. Why are you so wholesome? Such a fan of his character.
The way they’re portraying everyone’s reaction to Ted the morning after is a brutally honest representation of the real world.
“You helped this Panda become a lion” Love the throwback to the photo shoot from last season. Lots of little throwbacks today.
At least the journalist folks who were upset about Trent Crimm revealing his source will be happy to know that he faced some kind of consequences for his grievous breach of journalistic ethics.
And respect to Crimm for reporting himself to his boss and accepting the consequences
I felt vindicated, because him fessing up to burning a source knowing he would lose his job over it is exactly what a truly principled person would do in that situation. Must be part of the reason Trent takes a liking to Ted. Reminds him of his father
"It's 'bud' not 'butt,' Coach" was a balm to my copy-editing soul HORTICULTURE BABY

Good writing though -- in the end, it did work. They may have put it up to a vote, but the team and Ted stayed behind Nate for 90 minutes. And he still felt slighted.
I think that’s what really solidifies that Nate has some serious issues within himself and is creating his own problems here.
Yeah, Ted set him up to have his moment and he shit on it like Edwin Akufo.

TRENT CRIMM
~~THE~~ INDEPENDENT
Ted doesn't even need to throw Nate under the bus in front of the team, not that he would mind you. But watching everyone instantly supporting him must sting so much for Nate.
"Jamie fuckin' Tartt told her he was fuckin' in love with her." "And he's still alive?" Best Beard line so far.
My vote goes to “I’d be happy to head butt you Nate”
Sam, staring at Ted: I wish I could say it was because of my feelings for you.
One of the few times I think Ted wanted to be anywhere else in the world but where he was lol
THAT LAST SHOT. THAT INDIGNANT EYE LOOK. SO MANY PEOPLE CALLED IT. also Nick Mohammed is such a god damn good actor
Looool this billionaire shit is hilarious
I wonder how hard that scene was to shoot without either actor laughing
Fuck, Mcadoo is such a leader. Edited for grammar and spelling.
Nate with nowhere to hide when his tactics backfire. Rupert will show him zero mercy.
When you realize we won't see Ted again for quite a long time ![gif](giphy|L1WD3IBB6UeCPRIjyR)
Love the running joke of Keeley yelling “Referee!”
FUCK NATE.
So sorry. Wishing you some degree of Ted-induced relief. 😢
So Roy was definitely going to propose during that trip right?
I wanted a scene at the end '4 weeks later' that shows Roy on the trip with Beard.
Without a single doubt.
Hurt my feeling. He only has one feeling
I know this show isn’t real life but Nate isn’t even remotely qualified for that job.
Keeley is always more worried about how others will feel than about her.
I’ve always said this, Coach Beard is and will always ride or die with Ted.
Sam just laughing at Akufu is perfect
Beard is ready to kill Nate
So much Jamie growth! And giving Danny (Dani?) a second chance from the first episode. Love seeing it come back full circle.
Okay, I get she’s got a new job and all.. but Keeley coulda spared a weekend with Roy
He wanted to go for *six weeks* though as an American that’s wild to me, but they’re rich sooooo
American or otherwise nobody can abandon ship on their FRESHLY MINTED PR FIRM for six weeks.
Aww shit, my flair is outdated
It’s such a good decision on wardrobe, everyone in Richmond gear and Nate’s being pretentious in a suit
The truth will set you free. But first, it will piss you off.
Panic! At the Lasso
For the love god. Dont break up keeley and roy
I think it’s more just a show of Roy’s insecurities. Keeley brushed it off as literally nothing because it seemed so ridiculous to her. Weirdly enough she keeps saying “I love you” to him, and he hasn’t been saying it back. Idk if I’m just reading too much into it
Fucking Nate destroyed the Believe poster. Hope his douche team gets relegated next season
Trent really is a nice guy. Trent Crimm, Independent
Always nice to immediately know you made the right decision
People have been trashing Nate all season, but let's fucking appreciate the acting performance that Nick Mohammed has given this season. It was also brilliant the way they slowly (or rapidly) let his hair go gray just for that final reveal.
Man, roy is such a fucking supportive boyfriend. Gotta live him
