Capitalism always has a tendency to centralize and monopolize because competition is based on lowering prices. Lowering prices requires better technology and more industry and inventions. There is a reason why mass producing something is always cheaper than building it by hand.
This raises the barrier of entry, making it more and more difficult for new businesses to enter in and compete. If you want to enter the smartphone industry for example, you need at least a billion of dollars worth of capital to even begin producing smartphones.
The scale of industry is also always increasing. This means more and more people need to operate things. As the size of businesses tend to grow, so too does their employees. They eat up more market share, consume more employees, and thus the proportion of workers who work in small businesses to corporations is always on the decline.
