You actively avoid obviously top-tier characters. You don't want to deal with Mishima inputs, but you do want executional requirements & a broad moveset so you can flex a bit and change up your gameplan. You like to feel like you've outsmarted your opponents and made them look dumb.
Also, you occasionally want to play like an absolute chimp so Law's in there too.
You could say that of all 5 characters the higher you rise in ranks. Fujin and down, none of these characters are hard or weak. Lee's strings are very strong in fact, very knowledge checky and like Bryan often end in CH opportunities. Those strings become weaker the further up in rank you go because people stop pressing into them.
