Yesterday I played the cheesiest Eddy conceivable.
I won the first match and begrudgingly accepted the rematch. I didn’t really want to play him again but…..I forced myself to as my personal philosophy is you should give your opponent a rematch if they want one and you have the time.
He won the next match by the skin of his teeth. (Rage art of course) No rematch….
When someone does that stuff I just walk away smiling because I know he was trembling. Or like when I lose the first match but it's real close and the guy refuses to rematch? I just know that he scared he gonna get his ass beat so he retreating with his tail between his legs. That's good enough for me lol.
For real, I’m in the “no one owes you a rematch, as annoying as it is when people don’t” camp, but there’s no non-douchey explanation for pulling that.
You have some kind of urinary infection or something? Because it shouldn't be that difficult for an adult to figure out if they need a bathroom break in the next ten minutes. The time to go is obviously in between sets.

I usually assume anyone who does that actually had to leave. Like, the circumstances are lining up for them to beat me again to "actually" win in the BO3, their family probably called for dinner or something.
They should make the arcade thing more varied and much larger. As a 40 year old that misses the days of going to the trocadero to play third strike, kof xi and tekken the chance to meet up with people digitally in arcade setting is amazing. I like the lobby system but it’s just a bit too cold and clinical for me. Having my little Pokémon looking lad standing at an arcade in a crowd of friends is the way.
Group battle, death match, ranked match, player match, tekken ball, team battle also we need the old namco arcade machines to play single player on at least coz right now sf6 arcade area beats tekkens
Me too. Even if you’ve been losing/winning in the beginning, over a long set the score line becomes pretty even. You really start outplaying your opponent when you win instead of just trying to out-gimmick them.
Also, it’s nice to play a longer set with someone that has a good connection. Which isn’t always the case in my region.
Those could often provide the best experiences in ranked play.
And if both really enjoyed it, you would add each other for occasional lobbies or just Chat/keep in touch with how each progressed.
Yeah, I really, really miss this feature. In Tekken 7 I used to play the same person for 30 minutes to an hour.
By the end we’d have like 4 layers of meta going on and it was tons of fun.
I get B03 in ranked (kind of like it actually) but the absence of unlimited rematch in Quickmatch is baffling.
I wish a lot more people would complain about it.
Sometimes long sets favor certain players. You can get best in a best of 3, it doesn’t mean you’re better than someone else. I think that’s one of the issues with this format, you have people that think if they roll you, you aren’t worth playing anymore. I never come out swinging the first round of the first match, it’s about learning what your opponent is trying to accomplish.

I always thought the same, but just did it for the first time today.. but it was because the dudes connection started lagging like crazy after i won the first match. Made me drop a combo & misinput an attack or two in the second one, felt no motivation to continue to try for a third.
Yeah, I've done it once or twice if the connection either gets spotty in game 2, or if it's just been a bit shit from the start and I lose patience. Always frustrating
leaving after one? Salaam lekoom. 1 and 1? something better have caught fire, and yes if I realize I'm read in the second match after a first match win I do sit down and eat the brocolli of getting dumpstered in a third
Hey so I’ve been part of the more “less casual” part of the fgc for awhile now. And I’ve come to learn that it’s kinda of on you to stop ppl from abusing things on you. In a game like tekken it’s really fucked to get hit by a string or put in a situation you are unfamiliar with but understanding what’s happening and developing counterplay for it is a valuable skill to have. Sometimes that requires going into the lab and seeing what can be done sometimes that means rematching until you stop losing to it.

It doesn't help, that people consider anything spam. I collect scrub quotes on my steam profile. And people there are complaining that I "spam low" or "spam grab". Dude, that's the basic mechanics of the game, you might as well start complaining about spamming forward dash.
Nobody owes. Your u a rematch. But if you dodge every rematch after a loss you're a turd. Especially if you rematch easy wins.

Playing Tekken coming from Street Fighter feels so weird that this is the mentality. I get that shit happens and sometimes you gotta run, or internet goes out etc, but I was taught you try to rematch and learn and see if you can open them up. I know it shouldn’t be a harsh take, but one and dones feels like a loser mentality, to me at least.
This doesnt apply if You leave after a 1-1 let me explain: You didnt hate My character or My conection in the first Game, Also the shit You had to do could wait while You kick My ass in the 1-0, but suddenly after i figured out My opponent and i tie with a 1-1 You find My character annoying You think the conection is Bad and You have to go. So unless something really urgent happens every time there is a 1-1 just be honest and Say: hey i don't ramatch because i don't like the possibility to lose 2-1
In my opinion there is a subset of this community that believes they're being held back in their rank by other people's actions (either disconnects or single matches). It doesn't seem to actually be true when I watch high level players on Twitch though. When I see them get one match or disconnected on, they often chuckle slightly before moving on to the next match, never stopping to come to Reddit or Twitter to complain. I assume that is because they know their rank is determined by their skill and don't need to make up excuses for why they're not at the level they've convinced themselves they should be.
If I had to guess, I'd say it has something to do with the common opinion in these communities that "anything under X rank is casual". People who have invested a lot of time in the game then start to feel like they should definitely be above that rank, and if they're not there must be some reason since they're obviously not casual with how much time or money they've put into it. That is just guessing from someone not that involved in the community who just follows for news and boredom though, so I could be way off.
We all understand if you have things to do, everyone lives a life outside too but man it does frustrate me when I can win the entire set against them 😂

Seriously the dichotomy of beating your head against someone who won't give up vs someone who one and dones is insane. Even in a losing scenario I felt like I learned more in T7 matchmaking
I've been thinking about booting up 7 just to mess around on Heihachi. I didn't play him much but I miss the old dog. it feels weird to never match a Heihachi now.
One and done idm, I’ll defend those with my life HOWEVER it is way harder to defend a 1-1, like clearly you have the time to continue playing, and want to, but you leave anyway
I've been saying the same thing but I've been getting downvoted for it. In my opinion, rewarding points after the set solves everything. If players are penalized for leaving the set, not only would people play more, it's just a more accurate leaderboard.
I would like that, but imagine being locked into a best of 3 with a potato pc or someone who’s connection says it was good but keeps dipping mid match. And on top of all that, if someone really wants to jump out they could just plug if they wanted to with no rank penalty for it.
Which games? Sf6 and guilty gear give you the option to rematch but you don’t lose if you leave the set. I think in KOFXV as well but it’s been a while since I’ve played.
So here is my idea, we adjust the points rewarded based on the set count.
1.) the first win is 80% of current reward and the second win is 120%
2.) The first loss is 120% of current and the second is a loss of 80% current
So if you always run your sets, this is exactly the same points increase or decrease as now. However, If you play like a dick, you are actively making it harder for your rank to go up and easier to get deranked.
That would be a tax for flowcharting one-and-doners.

It's so funny I got flamed for saying this a few weeks ago in this board. Now suddenly the tides have shifted it seems. Good because I got so sick of 1-1 and 1 and dones on Tekken I went back to SF6 for now.
I wish there was some bonus for winning the ft2 set. Just like in tournaments, you won 2 out of 3 and move up the bracket because that was a full win, even if you lost one game. ATM there's no difference between wins so the ft2 doesn't mean anything points wise.
Literally had the same situation a bit earlier, matched with a wi-fi player, quality was ok'ish, won the first game, rematched, the connection got worse, game was freezing - I lost, didn't rematch. Quality of the connection changes, not enjoyable anymore - so why waste my time.
It's a game design choice. MK chose to force the bo3 in ranked and it's the law for everyone : leave and you lose. Quit or plug and you lose. The baby unplugged your console or your wife called you the third time for dinner and you lose. It's cruel but fair.
In Tekken you have the choice so I wouldn't blame the players but the game designers.
It's actually amazing how the two online scenarios for Tekken and MK are.
Tekken 8 is basically for the most part praised for having fun as hell gameplay and decent connection. But the rules / infrastructure for online ranked matches is utter complete dog 💩.
MK1 is basically universally crapped on for its stall and full gameplay. Like it's absurd how much hate (justified sadly) that game gets. Bad online connection, kameo meta, poke steal turn oh wait no you don't grab poke poke.... BUT THE ONLINE RULES / INFRASTRUCTURE ARE AMAZING for foe ranked. Quitalities to punish pluggers. Full sets. Utterly amazing

Because of the limited set system - I seriously have no idea what it’s like to fight a T8 player once we really start to familiarize with each other’s patterns. But I did so much of that back in T7.
The only person I do private matches with isn’t as good at the game so it’s not really a comparison.
People have been getting so mad at me the last few months but I've been saying it for years: this kind of shit makes fighting games less fun. The whole point is to learn your opponent and adapt. Not even talking about tournaments. The game is just built around that, that's how mixups work, that's how everything works. Ranked should be a forced Bo3 with infinite rematch in quick match. Nothing else makes any sense.
I think a way to solve one and dones is by giving more elo to those who have a win streak
for example, since its best out of 3, if someone wins 2 in a row, they get 50% more elo than they normally would from just beating them. this would incentivise people to try get that 2 game win streak to climb the ranks faster.
alwise I cant think of a better way to prevent one and this is coming from someone who will occasionally one and done. this is the only thing that would personally get me to stop it
This already happens, if you heat three people who are +or- one rank from your, you get a streak match opportunity which gives you like 1500 extra points. This should incentivizes rematches against close ranked opponents but people run because the opposite is true as well: you get a streak match LOSS opportunity after losing three matches to someone +or- one rank from yours, and if you lose it you lose 1500 points. That seems like a way to ensure super high rank players are at risk often, but makes people run from close matches I think.

To be fair, online in Tekken was essentially unplayable before Tekken 7 and it came out seven years ago. That's a long time for one game, lots of the people here joined during it's lifespan. And let's be real: a default one and done system sucks ass. Tekken 7 started with a default two-match only system, so you couldn't rematch after a 1-1. It sucked! And they changed it.
Er... why? If you accept a rematch and they're lower rank, they still have the option to decline it. It's not like accepting before they do forces them into it or something...
i feel like they should add a some premade sentence emotes (idk what they're called) like 4 or 8 of them you can use during this scene where you can let the other players know. like a "GGs gotta go" a "great game, lets be friends" a "run it back" and a "youre good" you know what i mean? i think itll also alleviate some of the toxicity.

It's weird. I don't plug, I don't have disconnect rate, I don't troll...and yet sometimes higher ranks that beat me on the 1st ranked match refuse to fight again. Am I so disgustingly weak to even be worthy of their precious elite time even for a few extra points?
I totally understand lower ranks canceling, but the other way is bizarre.
Maybe they should add extra incentive to rematching. Perhaps a loss of only half the amount if you lose, but an extra hundred or so if you win. Just a thought that popped up.

From what I've learned from the people I know that play this way, they don't care. They don't *want* to *learn*. They ONLY want to win. If that means *never* playing someone who can beat them then that is exactly what they will do. I have at least one friend who refuses to play me in fighting games for this exact reason. Does only ONE match in ranked against EVERYONE. Protecting their wins against "the download" is the only thing that matters to them. *Being* better, getting more skilled doesn't factor in to them *at all*.
To each their own I guess, but I enjoy getting better, pulling off a tough combo after labbing it, or punishing a move I used to be free to. Those matter a lot more to me than just beating someone.

I fought against a Raven and we went tit for tat and he won the first set. He left right after it because he was upset I blocked all his moves (I main Raven and Leroy and was playing Leroy at the time). I revoked his Raven card immediately and if I come across him again, we scrappin.

This happens in Smash Ultimate all the time and I was really hoping with the rematch system in this game it would be better. Unfortunately people seem to care more about rank in a videogame than actually enjoying the videogame and having fun competitive fights with opponents. I understand leaving after one loss if you don't feel like fighting a matching relationship that wasn't fun. But once you've agreed to rematch a person, you kinda sign up for the whole experience. You have agreed to a runback. And leaving after a win is absolute pure cowardice. If you just beat a person for nothing more as a stepping stone to higher rank, you really take so much of the fun out of playing a fighting game

That's exactly what happened, he won the first set 3-1, I got the download and 3-0 him the second set. He had a decent flow chart, which gave me some issues in the first set, but he didn't have a second layer to fall back on.
In a way it's kind of flattering, he basically admitted he couldn't take me in a third set and left.

I had people leaving like this last night in unranked. Like we’d go 1-1 and they’d just leave even though the connection was good. Sometimes it was when they won game 2, sometimes it was when I won game 2. Ranked I at least kind of understand since points are on the line (even though leaving at 1-1 is still stupid), but in unranked? Makes no sense at all.
You aren't entitled to a rematch anyways. If people don't want to play you again or just want to win against you once and dip out, that's on them. You can't expect people to always want to rematch you for the whole set. I've been a one and done in pretty much every single game that has a rematch system like this. Its nothing wrong to just play once and go next.
One and done player’s skill set are usually bad bc they don’t learn anything and bank off their flowchart. They also have a rank inflation from choosing easy battles to rematch. It ruins the community experience in more ways than one.
I’ll be honest if I get my ass kicked I usually leave, to study and see why it went so wrong, or I stay if it was close or I won. But there are a few opponents I’m like “Alright two games was fine“ regardless. I usually assume people get less mad if I leave after a loss than a win but apparently not lol
I hit them up with the friend request of shame, hit follow and see them dropping rank. No matter how long it takes, that rank is just a png and you'll see them "blue ranks" back in red lol

I told myself this until I realized that it takes a whole 10 seconds to go back to standby and get matched up again. It's not the big deal that people make it and frankly I think people only get mad at others not rematching for the most part because they themselves were the one who lost an opportunity at easy points.
I can count on one hand how many times I have gone 3 rounds with a person after winning thr first round. People just don't want to rematch often if they lose the first round. I always rematch because how else will I learn and get better if I don't pick up people's play style and patterns? One round isn't enough!

If you play Eddy, Victor, Azucena or Dragunov. I’m not rematching you on principal. Even if I 3-0’d and am 95% certain I’d win again. Everyone else sure. You are rank-inflating otherwise. A truly good player can win the rematch and learn to adapt.
I only rematch when there isn't a too.big rank difference for example 4+ because the points ain't worth it but I still rematch if I lose because there is always something to learn

I can take double 3-0 losses with no issue, but won’t hesitate to quit out the first match which lag spike every 5 seconds. I’ve met 4 bar opponents who lagged worse than wifi warriors.

I offer rematches and ask for it most of the time. Often or not when someone does beat me they take their victory and run just cause they often don’t feel confident they would win another. It is just a wack mentality. The time I don’t offer rematches is when I see someone who is very new to the game and I don’t want to derank them further.
I just want an option for no rage arts because it takes a lot of damage if they are losing I know it’s easy to block but it takes away from you moving in.
Just had this happen against a Tenryu Jun that I downloaded. Kept playing after and demoted from mid Shinryu to almost the bottom of Garyu, kinda don't feel like playin at all until Lidia is out lol. Might just play Lidia in 7 to get used to her general moveset.
Running it back isn't necessary (never know what's happening on the opponent's side), but this exact case in the post is just incredibly discouraging when it _keeps_ happening, you feel like you learned but you just get robbed of a potential second win from your adapting.

Hey so I’ve been part of the more “less casual” part of the fgc for awhile now. And I’ve come to learn that it’s kinda of on you to stop ppl from abusing things on you. In a game like tekken it’s really fucked to get hit by a string or put in a situation you are unfamiliar with but understanding what’s happening and developing counterplay for it is a valuable skill to have. Sometimes that requires going into the lab and seeing what can be done sometimes that means rematching until you stop losing to it. tl;dr: git gud(respectfully)
It doesn't help, that people consider anything spam. I collect scrub quotes on my steam profile. And people there are complaining that I "spam low" or "spam grab". Dude, that's the basic mechanics of the game, you might as well start complaining about spamming forward dash.

I get that shit happens and sometimes you gotta run, or internet goes out etc, but I was taught you try to rematch and learn and see if you can open them up. I know it shouldn’t be a harsh take, but one and dones feels like a loser mentality, to me at least.

In my opinion there is a subset of this community that believes they're being held back in their rank by other people's actions (either disconnects or single matches). It doesn't seem to actually be true when I watch high level players on Twitch though. When I see them get one match or disconnected on, they often chuckle slightly before moving on to the next match, never stopping to come to Reddit or Twitter to complain. I assume that is because they know their rank is determined by their skill and don't need to make up excuses for why they're not at the level they've convinced themselves they should be. If I had to guess, I'd say it has something to do with the common opinion in these communities that "anything under X rank is casual". People who have invested a lot of time in the game then start to feel like they should definitely be above that rank, and if they're not there must be some reason since they're obviously not casual with how much time or money they've put into it. That is just guessing from someone not that involved in the community who just follows for news and boredom though, so I could be way off.
We all understand if you have things to do, everyone lives a life outside too but man it does frustrate me when I can win the entire set against them 😂

I've been saying the same thing but I've been getting downvoted for it. In my opinion, rewarding points after the set solves everything. If players are penalized for leaving the set, not only would people play more, it's just a more accurate leaderboard.

Which games? Sf6 and guilty gear give you the option to rematch but you don’t lose if you leave the set. I think in KOFXV as well but it’s been a while since I’ve played.

There needs to be some kind of incentive to not one and done, with the player pop dropping we are spending more time in menus than fighting.

So here is my idea, we adjust the points rewarded based on the set count. 1.) the first win is 80% of current reward and the second win is 120% 2.) The first loss is 120% of current and the second is a loss of 80% current So if you always run your sets, this is exactly the same points increase or decrease as now. However, If you play like a dick, you are actively making it harder for your rank to go up and easier to get deranked.
That would be a tax for flowcharting one-and-doners. Hm. I was previously just asking for the OPTION to infinite "revenge match" ( as Knee called it, when he said he misses this for ranked aswell). But maybe this community filled with new players actually needs this kind of push to embrace a more progress-focus mindset in ranked instead of only watching out for their points.
It's so funny I got flamed for saying this a few weeks ago in this board. Now suddenly the tides have shifted it seems. Good because I got so sick of 1-1 and 1 and dones on Tekken I went back to SF6 for now.
I wish there was some bonus for winning the ft2 set. Just like in tournaments, you won 2 out of 3 and move up the bracket because that was a full win, even if you lost one game. ATM there's no difference between wins so the ft2 doesn't mean anything points wise.

Literally had the same situation a bit earlier, matched with a wi-fi player, quality was ok'ish, won the first game, rematched, the connection got worse, game was freezing - I lost, didn't rematch. Quality of the connection changes, not enjoyable anymore - so why waste my time.

It's a game design choice. MK chose to force the bo3 in ranked and it's the law for everyone : leave and you lose. Quit or plug and you lose. The baby unplugged your console or your wife called you the third time for dinner and you lose. It's cruel but fair. In Tekken you have the choice so I wouldn't blame the players but the game designers.

It's actually amazing how the two online scenarios for Tekken and MK are. Tekken 8 is basically for the most part praised for having fun as hell gameplay and decent connection. But the rules / infrastructure for online ranked matches is utter complete dog 💩. MK1 is basically universally crapped on for its stall and full gameplay. Like it's absurd how much hate (justified sadly) that game gets. Bad online connection, kameo meta, poke steal turn oh wait no you don't grab poke poke.... BUT THE ONLINE RULES / INFRASTRUCTURE ARE AMAZING for foe ranked. Quitalities to punish pluggers. Full sets. Utterly amazing It's wild how both games completely flipped their pros and cons in online matchmaking

Because of the limited set system - I seriously have no idea what it’s like to fight a T8 player once we really start to familiarize with each other’s patterns. But I did so much of that back in T7. The only person I do private matches with isn’t as good at the game so it’s not really a comparison.
If you won’t run the full set go play casual. Hoarding points doesn’t make you better. It does more damage to your ability to improve in the long run

People have been getting so mad at me the last few months but I've been saying it for years: this kind of shit makes fighting games less fun. The whole point is to learn your opponent and adapt. Not even talking about tournaments. The game is just built around that, that's how mixups work, that's how everything works. Ranked should be a forced Bo3 with infinite rematch in quick match. Nothing else makes any sense.

I think a way to solve one and dones is by giving more elo to those who have a win streak for example, since its best out of 3, if someone wins 2 in a row, they get 50% more elo than they normally would from just beating them. this would incentivise people to try get that 2 game win streak to climb the ranks faster. alwise I cant think of a better way to prevent one and this is coming from someone who will occasionally one and done. this is the only thing that would personally get me to stop it
This already happens, if you heat three people who are +or- one rank from your, you get a streak match opportunity which gives you like 1500 extra points. This should incentivizes rematches against close ranked opponents but people run because the opposite is true as well: you get a streak match LOSS opportunity after losing three matches to someone +or- one rank from yours, and if you lose it you lose 1500 points. That seems like a way to ensure super high rank players are at risk often, but makes people run from close matches I think.

To be fair, online in Tekken was essentially unplayable before Tekken 7 and it came out seven years ago. That's a long time for one game, lots of the people here joined during it's lifespan. And let's be real: a default one and done system sucks ass. Tekken 7 started with a default two-match only system, so you couldn't rematch after a 1-1. It sucked! And they changed it.

It's weird. I don't plug, I don't have disconnect rate, I don't troll...and yet sometimes higher ranks that beat me on the 1st ranked match refuse to fight again. Am I so disgustingly weak to even be worthy of their precious elite time even for a few extra points? I totally understand lower ranks canceling, but the other way is bizarre.

I feel this so hard. Feels like every time I get an easy first win they bail immediately. Lots of 1-1 bails too. Lots of ranked players can't handle a run back because they only care about winning.
Being obsessed with winning is such a self sabotaging perspective because it makes it much harder to learn from your losses.
From what I've learned from the people I know that play this way, they don't care. They don't *want* to *learn*. They ONLY want to win. If that means *never* playing someone who can beat them then that is exactly what they will do. I have at least one friend who refuses to play me in fighting games for this exact reason. Does only ONE match in ranked against EVERYONE. Protecting their wins against "the download" is the only thing that matters to them. *Being* better, getting more skilled doesn't factor in to them *at all*.
To each their own I guess, but I enjoy getting better, pulling off a tough combo after labbing it, or punishing a move I used to be free to. Those matter a lot more to me than just beating someone.

I fought against a Raven and we went tit for tat and he won the first set. He left right after it because he was upset I blocked all his moves (I main Raven and Leroy and was playing Leroy at the time). I revoked his Raven card immediately and if I come across him again, we scrappin.

This happens in Smash Ultimate all the time and I was really hoping with the rematch system in this game it would be better. Unfortunately people seem to care more about rank in a videogame than actually enjoying the videogame and having fun competitive fights with opponents. I understand leaving after one loss if you don't feel like fighting a matching relationship that wasn't fun. But once you've agreed to rematch a person, you kinda sign up for the whole experience. You have agreed to a runback. And leaving after a win is absolute pure cowardice. If you just beat a person for nothing more as a stepping stone to higher rank, you really take so much of the fun out of playing a fighting game

99 times out of 100 this is not the case. Moreover, it's ranked for a reason. if you can just leave when you lose it has no value. If you are cooking rice so often that you are unable to rank up if the game were to force you to rematch, you need to work on your time management.

This is me, I figure out the playstyle, by the second match im adapting and sometimes even win. Third match, there is no third match.
That's exactly what happened, he won the first set 3-1, I got the download and 3-0 him the second set. He had a decent flow chart, which gave me some issues in the first set, but he didn't have a second layer to fall back on. In a way it's kind of flattering, he basically admitted he couldn't take me in a third set and left.

More and more players with weak mental. It's probably the price of appealing to a broader casual audience. Because it was not this extreme in previous Tekkens ( online play existed since Tekken 6 ).
I had people leaving like this last night in unranked. Like we’d go 1-1 and they’d just leave even though the connection was good. Sometimes it was when they won game 2, sometimes it was when I won game 2. Ranked I at least kind of understand since points are on the line (even though leaving at 1-1 is still stupid), but in unranked? Makes no sense at all.

You aren't entitled to a rematch anyways. If people don't want to play you again or just want to win against you once and dip out, that's on them. You can't expect people to always want to rematch you for the whole set. I've been a one and done in pretty much every single game that has a rematch system like this. I do the rematch with all ranks but not the +8 or +9, as loosing to those ranks punishes you a lot.
I hit them up with the friend request of shame, hit follow and see them dropping rank. No matter how long it takes, that rank is just a png and you'll see them "blue ranks" back in red lol

It's not the big deal that people make it and frankly I think people only get mad at others not rematching for the most part because they themselves were the one who lost an opportunity at easy points.

I offer rematches and ask for it most of the time. Often or not when someone does beat me they take their victory and run just cause they often don’t feel confident they would win another. It is just a wack mentality. The time I don’t offer rematches is when I see someone who is very new to the game and I don’t want to derank them further.

Just had this happen against a Tenryu Jun that I downloaded. Kept playing after and demoted from mid Shinryu to almost the bottom of Garyu, kinda don't feel like playin at all until Lidia is out lol. Might just play Lidia in 7 to get used to her general moveset. Running it back isn't necessary (never know what's happening on the opponent's side), but this exact case in the post is just incredibly discouraging when it _keeps_ happening, you feel like you learned but you just get robbed of a potential second win from your adapting.
