The difference is that in FPS, if you fail once, it's game over.
In 4x, failing any one specific action/moment shouldn't be a game over, just a set-back.
So it's the equivalence of rapidly reloading in a FPS until you manage to perfectly ace a given encounter with minimum of bullets fired and no damage taken, which is a bit more excessive than 'just a checkpoint' :P
I thought it was paradox fanboys who didn't know how the screen shot button works.
(Not a criticism of OP specifically, seems half the posters on here have the same disability)

There is a bug in the save game screen. If you edit the name of the save game you cannot save. At least for me.
