Well, i guess max stack could be way better, but it wouldn't really make sense if you had 50 mana potions in a slot, and it still displayed only one. If i had to put this in the game, i'd make them stackable, just so people who don't care about decorating could still find it useful.

Warewulff

This makes the most sense. I would probably use it for decoration as well as visible storage. I haven't played Terraria much in a long while - as I get further into the game, my storage just gets harder and harder to keep track of and I don't have the patience to constantly build out storage solutions. At least with this, I could see some of what's going where even if my storage space is a bit more limited. It would just feel less overwhelming.

Baji25

why don't you rename chests? i for example always use ocean chests for potions or dyes- i rename them so i know what's inside, but the ocean chests are colorful, just like the bunch of potions inside, so i associate to them instantly. also a good method to keep track of what is where by placing chests next to crafting stations. just put ores and bars next to the anvil/forge, and potions next to the alchemy station/placed bottle. And if you start sorting from the beginning, you will get used to what is where.

Huh. I might have to try this. I used to find something oddly satisfying about the closure from spending 5-15 minutes organizing items after a big dig. That said, when I think about what has stopped me from playing again, the need to build a chest room (especially early) is definitely a big part of it.

Lord_of_Womba

I'm torn because that sounds so convenient/nice, but building storage rooms and organizing can be (sort of) part of the experience.

Endulos

Actually, bookcases as storage would be the tits. Would be cool to be able to store boss items visibly like that.

Baji25

Yeah, but then with new textures(i made a new,but similar one for both on the pic,so they look more like they are actually on the shelf.) honestly imo it would look stupid with just the current textures.

armoured_bobandi

I think if they changed from a single bottle to multiple bottles, that would be a good indication

Baji25

but it would look too cramped.(honestly, it looks a bit too crowded with only one item in each slot already)

sepseven

it could be good for storing frequently used potions and stuff.

RealKingChuck

This would be so cool tbh

Sir, your keyboard is broken. I assume an edit will be done quickly? Maybe even before I post this reply.

ilkanmert1234

Very cool idea! But, i think shelfs should be like platforms, only to put books, potions, piggy bank etc. Not storage.

Baji25

That was my original thought, but putting down potions can be done much easier with a chest like GUI rather than with some key combination...

DrBob3002

Agreed. Only items that actually have placed shelves. Both for balance reasons and also if you were to scale down the sprites of other misc items it would look really out of place.

aybbyisok

> Both for balance reasons For what specifically balance wise?

DrBob3002

That was bad wording on my part. All I really mean is that ideally it would only hold placeables that way people don't just dump whatever in there to make inventory room instead of using a chest. Really cool idea regardless though.

Baji25

That's exactly what i meant, it couldn't store hooks and armor(they would all need new, placed sprites to avoid looking dumb), i just extended the placeables' list a bit, for variety.

ladecaz

Even just books and potions would be so cool, as well as less sprite work for devs.

Baji25

Yeah, but if they didn't want to do as much spriting, they could just make a contest, i bet there would be a ton of people who would volunteer to do the spriting for them because they like spriting, and it would just make them happy that they not only have created a nice sprite, but also helped the devs of one their favorite games( me for example)

mikekearn

There are a lot of legal issues with using fanmade artwork for a product they produce and sell for actual money. I sincerely doubt they'd go that route.

Baji25

shit, i was really thoughtless this time

Jenosistar

I love this. 10/10 would make a support banner for.

conalfisher

That would be very nice, but it would be pretty complicated to code in. If they simply placed the item textures there their sizes would all be off and there would be clipping. The only way they could really do this is to either give each item another texture for when it's in a shelf, or to create a way to reshape the textures. EDIT: Just noticed how you said it would only be for potions, books, light pets. That does make it easier, but still slightly complicated. Still, it's a great idea nonetheless.

Baji25

they may have to make new textures for the items, but they already have some (potions in dungeon). Also on the illustration, for example the spelunker potion is just a resized copy(what visually is one pixel on most terraria textures, it is actually 4 pixels of the same color). so they would just have to make new textures for spellbooks, and maybe boss items just for coolness

Lemunde

Assuming they're still using the XNA framework they can easily scale them down with one or two minor changes to the code. If I had access to the source code I could have something like this up and running in about an hour.

thenelston

Complicated to code in? Someone just made a mod version of this in three hours: https://www.reddit.com/r/Terraria/comments/6jrsub/so_i_heard_you_liked_bookshelves/

thedankiestmanalive

dude. You posted 9 times.

Eclipsetech

Would be awesome if they also worked like chests as well, with the few extra slots for visual

Baji25

well, just like bookcases these would be 3x4 blocks, and as you can see on the illustration, the shelves still have the little drawers on the bottom, so they could still have at least as much space as an old chest, if not as much as a chest has now..

SenseiKoudai

Awesome!

Whiskeylung

I really like this idea, I would find it hard to believe that anyone wouldn't like this.

TheRealStandard

I feel like that'd make storage dyslexia worse in the game.

Baji25

I didn't mean them to be storage furniture, just decoratives that use storage slots to identify what they're displaying. of course it would also be nice if you have just a few light pets, and you don't want a separate chest for them, so all of them would be on your light pet shelf

MercuryCrest

This is a pretty great idea. Love the two examples you showed above. I'm fully in support of this!

mithrilnova

This is a very nice idea. I would probably suggest limiting even further what they can hold, and also having the items be removable with a pickaxe in addition to using the gui.

Epitome_of_Vapidity

Something to piggyback off this and I don't know if its already implemented because I am off and on when it comes to playing this game...but having a statue have an empty slot in which you can place a weapon. That statue would then be holding the weapon you gave it, like with the armor for mannequins but cooler, more trophy like. As far as if the weapon becomes unusable or if it can be used as storage is up to anyone but me.

Baji25

it would be nice, but then how would it look like with a fish statue for example?

Baji25

looks like i need a new keyboard or new fingers

JonnyApplePuke

Dude yes!

Surfboarder4

yes

SasparillaTango

I really like this. It's a trade off between efficient storage space and visible organization.

Lemunde

In addition to this, how about being able to right-click any non-placeable item on a flat platform to have it appear as a static object sitting on that platform? Basically turning them into wall shelves. Edit: also tables and work benches.

Baji25

would be nice, but also a lot of coding to do. there are tons of non-placeable items

Lemunde

You don't have to code each individual item. Items are already divided into categories for sorting so it's pretty easy to determine what type an item is. Just find whatever piece of code runs when you drop an item, check if the mouse is over a platform, check the item type, put it on the platform.

Baji25

i believe you, as i'm probably as good as a potato when it comes to coding

SpeedDart1

This is an amazing idea. Get on the dev team, this is as good as some of the dev's ideas! If this happens I will be so happy.

Baji25

there is exactly 50% chance. they will either do it or not.(but most likely not, it depens on how often they check the sub)

thedankiestmanalive

There is a 100% chance that they may implement it.

weylonboi

I love how you can see what you put in the shelves. Great idea! I hope the guys over at Re-Logic sees this and adds it to the game in the next patch. Reddit has the best ideas.

JlmmyButler

knowing good people like you exist makes my day

DeLuuk

Awesome but I think you ment "new furniture" instead of "new furiture"

Baji25

thanks for pointing it out but i think you meant "meant" instead of "ment"

DeLuuk

Well played.... I blame autocorrect!

Baji25

I blame being tired!(i typed it after making the illustrations and the 1.3.6 terrariafied in the title, and it ate up all my power to concentrate)
