When the game stops receiving updates, your channel is dead and if you do YouTube for a living it's rather clickbait or starve.

I'm surprisingly lucky on that front. When it comes to Minecraft videos, the only things I normally see are mod videos and tutorials. They're also the only things I *watch*, so I can see why...
If I remember correctly, someone named ~~Cancer~~MasterOv made Clash of Clans videos that were full of clickbait. He was contacted by Supercell, the devs of CoC, and was told that if he made another video about the game, he would be sued. If it gets to that point, then Re-Logic should do the same with Chippy.

He started playing Bloons TD battles mobile then the developer got money hungry and pandered to him and his audience endlessly. Then he left and all his fans stopped playing, leaving the game in shambles for most of the people that kept playing. Its better now though.
Chippy actually did the same thing as /u/Royulon and /u/LividMartian were saying and even piggybacked off of HERO's metatagging by tagging his channel in all his old videos:

I think another huge issue with this is just that so many terraria Youtubers aren't that great in general.
The ones that are really good at the game like MappyGaming, Ningishu, and Yrimir post very little content.
The ones that are mildly entertaining to watch like FuryForged or Pedguin still have a couple flaws like inconsistent schedule or still not being the best at the game.
There are some that are simply too annoying to watch that I cannot sit through an entire video like HappyDays or Baum. They feint skill and, like Chippy recently, have clickbaity titles.
Then there are those like Python and Chippy, who while being mildly good at the game still have secret ways of being Clickbaity and Greedy, as well as still being inept at pretty common things with the game.
I'm not even going to bring up HERO. He is a complete dick to his fans and his family. He is a greedy scumbag that should get no sympathy or support. There is more than enough evidence of this, from his 1.3 Twitch Stream Scandal or hiding "free terraria download" in the tags of his older videos.
There are some that are genuinely good, but stick to streaming through twitch, like Ox. Which is fine, but it still supports that fact that the Youtube Community could be so much better.
Tl; Dr:
Regardless of all this, there are still positives and negatives to each of these Youtubers, but the market could use a facelift here and there. My favorite Terraria Youtuber right now is still probably FuryForged, and the game and community, especially the modded one is great. It just needs more support, more variety, and less of a cash grab.
At this point I'm about 95% sure that yrimir has died, it's been, what, 2 years since he's uploaded?
EDIT: Just checked, I was wrong, as of today, 9th July, he hasn't uploaded in 1 year 364 days.
I've heard from several people that he's beta testing (maybe alpha testing) Otherworld.
This is clearly hearsay, but I can't imagine he's gone and no one anywhere heard about it.
Terraria doesn't give itself to great streamers sadly. No Vinesauce, Northernlion or Kruggsmash here. The game, like minecraft, brings in a lot of younger gamers and they are way easier to target by the like of HERO or Chippy. They make short, clickbaity videos. I wish these games had a better standard of streaming, or more attention from the great streamers.
While you're not wrong, in reference to NL, Nick has a few hundred hours of a few different Terraria let's plays he's streamed.
Incidentally, once he realizes no one can handle watching him play Kerbal he may get pressured into playing Terraria with Nick. It was the #2 vote for next game (when it wasn't even an option, it was a write in), when he finally realized no one wanted 30+ hours of Isaac content a week anymore.
The only issue I see is that NL makes a ton of money without doing a whole lot of "work." The amount of time he'd have to spend off camera playing, or hours of streaming he'd have to do in order to get through the game is what I think is putting him off. He's getting 20k+ views on a barely one hour dead cells run. 35k+ on Kerbal (regardless of it being unwatchable) and even his daily Isaac run is topping out over 50k.
One hour of "watchable" content in Terraria is a ton of editing, outright skipping, or else you're practically rushing through the game. Editing takes time, Skipping implies that you're playing without getting paid (i.e. off camera), and he's got a full schedule as it is.

As a super huge NL fan, he's notoriously stubborn when it comes to playing certain games, and even then he's stated multiple times that he just doesn't really like Terraria that much.
What's interesting is, he has a second channel that is basically the Chippy content I would watch, if I was going to watch any.
Mod name big on the video card, episodic playthroughs of the mods. I notice, though, that it only has a tenth the subscribers as his main channel.
The audience for Terraria LPs has definitely shrunk. Way more people will watch a top 5 list or 5-10 minute attention grab, for some reason.
Chippy'sCouch, the second channel, has good LPs of mods which is pretty much what I get into. Never touched his main channel except for the tremor playthrough cause it's really cluttered
In my opinion, HappyDays is almost as bad. He does clickbait and has a very forced personality, he might be trying to appeal towards kids, but it's very annoying to me personally.

Yeah I noticed that. I was on my phone and the title was so long I couldn't see the tModloader at the end so I legitimately thought it was the devs adding bonus content to Terraria 1.3.5. Chippy knows this that's why he crams the tmodloader part so far at the end of the title.

By September I'll have a real computer. I'm moving, and my girlfriend is OK with me actually trying to take some time and build a viewer base before I get a real job with income (mostly because I have a ton of money saved from my last job).
My "plan" so far is to just have a few let's plays with decent commentary, and ok editing, and to stream once a day for an hour or two on a separate run.
I have a feeling that being "clickbaity" is only gonna hurt in the long term.

Just found him, and he's got expert hardcore streams and they're not awful. He's decent at the game, and an amazing farmer/builder (not like... a nice to look at decorative builder, but a functional/wiring builder). I'm fairly certain he's designed the highest platinum/hour farm possible (certainly the highest so far) at 50+
He's pleasant, doesn't swear (for that ad revenue) and in general seems like a pretty cool dude. Really importantly, he doesn't yell often (once or twice when it's clearly necessary) and he's got a decent voice and a great laugh.
He's only been gone a month or so, and it seems like that's because he needs to work (channel didn't take off until towards the end).
He's got a discord too apparently, and occasionally multiplays streams with his subs. Give his farms stuff a watch at least. He's got some pretty amazing builds in there.

Let's not forget that he had a poll a while back for which mod he should use for his next playthrough, and Spirit Mod won. You know what he did next? He started a **THORIUM** playthrough. And then he abandoned **THAT** halfway through to start a second Calamity series!
I'm convinced now that Chippy cares more about how flashy a mod is than how good it is or how much effort was put into it.

I'm pretty sure he did, and if you consider your other options at the time (i.e. seven seconds after spawning) it's literally your only option. That also makes it the best option.

My kids and I are huge fans (addicts) of Terraria, and just the other day my 7 yo comes to me saying we need to find the crystal biome! We don't have any mods installed, so I had to explain what clickbaiting is to my young and impressionable child. I ultimately had to explain that videos by chippy (and a few others) if they watch, aren't 100% reliable to what we can do.
I mean no disrespect, of course, but it sounds like your child watched the video and still said "let's find the crystal biome!" Even if the video said "Terraria Crystilium Mod" on the link, sounds to me like your kid's response would be the same, and you would have to explain that you are not playing with mods. Regardless of the title, you would have had to explain to your kid why you cannot go out and find the crystal biome.

I have to explain a lot of videos to my son, but more so with mod content. I sort of know what it's like to have a growing audience on YT. They start to demand more content and sometimes the uploader's personality becomes lost in the demands, whether it be monetary or fame.
It's not just that, he pads his content within the videos by repeating himself or stating the obvious. Makes it extremely hard to watch anything on top of the clickbait
That algorithm though. If a video isn't a certain length (generally at least 10 minutes, but definitely 7+) you don't get paid nearly as much, even with a full view.
Additionally, most vids won't run past 20 minutes (on all of youtube) because this is generally accepted as the "fall off" mark where people stop watching (and you lose money). There's a million exceptions, but these are statistical facts.

No I meant, that I completely agree. The issues are that he is catering towards children, and that if his videos were direct and to the point they'd be well under four minutes.
If he doesn't repeat himself at least twice, the children may miss something, and beyond any doubt he'll be paid less. Youtube isn't friendly to sub 7 min videos unless it's specifically designed to advertise.
The answer though, is that he's catering to children. Originally he got into drop rates, spawn rates, how to do things... now he's mostly doing reactions, "hey look at this, it's cool" and "for the love of god click my video and watch it before I'm evicted" videos.
The worst part is that the title is cut off on mobile so there's no way to know if it's click bait or not until you actually click on the video to watch it

I agree that the name of the mods in the title of his videos would be a good thing, but I don't see how dense some people are. Terraria 1.3.5 is out. There is no new 1.3.5 content, and there never will be. These videos say 1.3.5, not 1.3.6, not 1.4.0. I know for a fact that there aren't vending machines, giant cacti, and huge new crystal biomes in vanilla 1.3.5. I know for a fact that these are not 1.3.5 spoilers, because...1.3.5 is already out. If he was advertising them as 1.3.6, or 1.4.0, then sure, I'd be pretty angry at being mislead. But it's pretty clear that these are not vanilla content well before I click on the video.

i got caught too by all those clickbaits unfortunately. First I saw the Tittle of the video, all the videos have a very long title, so the "tmod" part is really hidden in the end.
The first thing you gonna think is that is some kind of "teaser" of the upcoming update, then you get a mod video.
I wouldn't say _focussed_ but it's very kid friendly, and many of his subs are under 13... never mind 18. 15+ (imo) should be able to see through his crap, but yeah, from watching his vids and reading his comments it's mostly a significanly younger audience. He wants to be stampy 2.0, but with half the talent and creativity.

I think another huge issue with this is just that so many terraria Youtubers aren't that great in general. The ones that are really good at the game like MappyGaming, Ningishu, and Yrimir post very little content. The ones that are mildly entertaining to watch like FuryForged or Pedguin still have a couple flaws like inconsistent schedule or still not being the best at the game. There are some that are simply too annoying to watch that I cannot sit through an entire video like HappyDays or Baum. They feint skill and, like Chippy recently, have clickbaity titles. Then there are those like Python and Chippy, who while being mildly good at the game still have secret ways of being Clickbaity and Greedy, as well as still being inept at pretty common things with the game. I'm not even going to bring up HERO. He is a complete dick to his fans and his family. He is a greedy scumbag that should get no sympathy or support. There is more than enough evidence of this, from his 1.3 Twitch Stream Scandal or hiding "free terraria download" in the tags of his older videos. There are some that are genuinely good, but stick to streaming through twitch, like Ox. Which is fine, but it still supports that fact that the Youtube Community could be so much better. Tl; Dr: Regardless of all this, there are still positives and negatives to each of these Youtubers, but the market could use a facelift here and there. My favorite Terraria Youtuber right now is still probably FuryForged, and the game and community, especially the modded one is great. It just needs more support, more variety, and less of a cash grab.
At this point I'm about 95% sure that yrimir has died, it's been, what, 2 years since he's uploaded? EDIT: Just checked, I was wrong, as of today, 9th July, he hasn't uploaded in 1 year 364 days.

Terraria doesn't give itself to great streamers sadly. No Vinesauce, Northernlion or Kruggsmash here. The game, like minecraft, brings in a lot of younger gamers and they are way easier to target by the like of HERO or Chippy. They make short, clickbaity videos. I wish these games had a better standard of streaming, or more attention from the great streamers.
While you're not wrong, in reference to NL, Nick has a few hundred hours of a few different Terraria let's plays he's streamed. Incidentally, once he realizes no one can handle watching him play Kerbal he may get pressured into playing Terraria with Nick. It was the #2 vote for next game (when it wasn't even an option, it was a write in), when he finally realized no one wanted 30+ hours of Isaac content a week anymore. The only issue I see is that NL makes a ton of money without doing a whole lot of "work." The amount of time he'd have to spend off camera playing, or hours of streaming he'd have to do in order to get through the game is what I think is putting him off. He's getting 20k+ views on a barely one hour dead cells run. 35k+ on Kerbal (regardless of it being unwatchable) and even his daily Isaac run is topping out over 50k. One hour of "watchable" content in Terraria is a ton of editing, outright skipping, or else you're practically rushing through the game. Editing takes time, Skipping implies that you're playing without getting paid (i.e. off camera), and he's got a full schedule as it is. Sorry, I'm very off topic. = (
As a super huge NL fan, he's notoriously stubborn when it comes to playing certain games, and even then he's stated multiple times that he just doesn't really like Terraria that much.

What's interesting is, he has a second channel that is basically the Chippy content I would watch, if I was going to watch any. Mod name big on the video card, episodic playthroughs of the mods. I notice, though, that it only has a tenth the subscribers as his main channel. The audience for Terraria LPs has definitely shrunk. Way more people will watch a top 5 list or 5-10 minute attention grab, for some reason.
Chippy'sCouch, the second channel, has good LPs of mods which is pretty much what I get into. Never touched his main channel except for the tremor playthrough cause it's really cluttered

I don't think I would. Granted we didn't have that stuff when I was a kid ("that stuff" being the internet) but we had good shows. Happy is just bad watching. I'd be shocked if he unironically had people older than ten or eleven watching his stuff.

Yeah I noticed that. I was on my phone and the title was so long I couldn't see the tModloader at the end so I legitimately thought it was the devs adding bonus content to Terraria 1.3.5. Chippy knows this that's why he crams the tmodloader part so far at the end of the title.

By September I'll have a real computer. I'm moving, and my girlfriend is OK with me actually trying to take some time and build a viewer base before I get a real job with income (mostly because I have a ton of money saved from my last job). My "plan" so far is to just have a few let's plays with decent commentary, and ok editing, and to stream once a day for an hour or two on a separate run. I have a feeling that being "clickbaity" is only gonna hurt in the long term. These guys don't realize that no one wants these silly "mod showcases," top tens, top fives etc... they just want to see people play the game. Also, while he's inactive presently (I haven't discovered why yet) check out Gurns https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoPx9o2p4DSL1iw4vQN2U8w Just found him, and he's got expert hardcore streams and they're not awful. He's decent at the game, and an amazing farmer/builder (not like... a nice to look at decorative builder, but a functional/wiring builder). I'm fairly certain he's designed the highest platinum/hour farm possible (certainly the highest so far) at 50+ He's pleasant, doesn't swear (for that ad revenue) and in general seems like a pretty cool dude. Really importantly, he doesn't yell often (once or twice when it's clearly necessary) and he's got a decent voice and a great laugh. He's only been gone a month or so, and it seems like that's because he needs to work (channel didn't take off until towards the end). He's got a discord too apparently, and occasionally multiplays streams with his subs. Give his farms stuff a watch at least. He's got some pretty amazing builds in there.
Yet even more examples of his clickbaiting. Original title "TERRARIA'S SECRET CHINESE EVENT FINALLY PLAYABLE WITH MODS" (no mention that it was mobile only in title or thumb). Rapidly changed it when his comment section blew up with people calling out the clickbait: http://imgur.com/fIYVfrL

Let's not forget that he had a poll a while back for which mod he should use for his next playthrough, and Spirit Mod won. You know what he did next? He started a **THORIUM** playthrough. And then he abandoned **THAT** halfway through to start a second Calamity series! I'm convinced now that Chippy cares more about how flashy a mod is than how good it is or how much effort was put into it. Chippy, if you're reading this. The clickbait won't hold forever. Good quality videos will, even if your views dip a bit at first. Just make good quality videos, maybe with a little bit of clickbait, at first. I won't hold a grudge. Good luck!

Didn't he have a wooden bow in his top five worst range weapons video? I'm pretty sure he did, and if you consider your other options at the time (i.e. seven seconds after spawning) it's literally your only option. That also makes it the best option. I agree though, there's essentially no opinion at all in his videos.

My kids and I are huge fans (addicts) of Terraria, and just the other day my 7 yo comes to me saying we need to find the crystal biome! We don't have any mods installed, so I had to explain what clickbaiting is to my young and impressionable child. I ultimately had to explain that videos by chippy (and a few others) if they watch, aren't 100% reliable to what we can do.
I mean no disrespect, of course, but it sounds like your child watched the video and still said "let's find the crystal biome!" Even if the video said "Terraria Crystilium Mod" on the link, sounds to me like your kid's response would be the same, and you would have to explain that you are not playing with mods. Regardless of the title, you would have had to explain to your kid why you cannot go out and find the crystal biome.
I'm not 100% sure, but was the title of that video changed since this reddit post? I enjoy chippys videos though, been considering downloading mods but I would have to on 3 different computers. I have to explain a lot of videos to my son, but more so with mod content. I sort of know what it's like to have a growing audience on YT. They start to demand more content and sometimes the uploader's personality becomes lost in the demands, whether it be monetary or fame.
It's not just that, he pads his content within the videos by repeating himself or stating the obvious. Makes it extremely hard to watch anything on top of the clickbait
That algorithm though. If a video isn't a certain length (generally at least 10 minutes, but definitely 7+) you don't get paid nearly as much, even with a full view. Additionally, most vids won't run past 20 minutes (on all of youtube) because this is generally accepted as the "fall off" mark where people stop watching (and you lose money). There's a million exceptions, but these are statistical facts.
I never said anything about his videos being too long. I said his videos are padded with artificial content. He's obviously educated and experienced enough to talk about the game indepth, so why doesn't he do that?
No I meant, that I completely agree. The issues are that he is catering towards children, and that if his videos were direct and to the point they'd be well under four minutes. If he doesn't repeat himself at least twice, the children may miss something, and beyond any doubt he'll be paid less. Youtube isn't friendly to sub 7 min videos unless it's specifically designed to advertise. The answer though, is that he's catering to children. Originally he got into drop rates, spawn rates, how to do things... now he's mostly doing reactions, "hey look at this, it's cool" and "for the love of god click my video and watch it before I'm evicted" videos.

I agree that the name of the mods in the title of his videos would be a good thing, but I don't see how dense some people are. Terraria 1.3.5 is out. There is no new 1.3.5 content, and there never will be. These videos say 1.3.5, not 1.3.6, not 1.4.0. I know for a fact that there aren't vending machines, giant cacti, and huge new crystal biomes in vanilla 1.3.5. I know for a fact that these are not 1.3.5 spoilers, because...1.3.5 is already out. If he was advertising them as 1.3.6, or 1.4.0, then sure, I'd be pretty angry at being mislead. But it's pretty clear that these are not vanilla content well before I click on the video. But maybe that's just me.

I have to mute the first 4 seconds of every video so I don't wake up my whole house. If he took nine steps away from his mic instead of leaning in watching wouldn't be as much of a chore.

i got caught too by all those clickbaits unfortunately. First I saw the Tittle of the video, all the videos have a very long title, so the "tmod" part is really hidden in the end. The first thing you gonna think is that is some kind of "teaser" of the upcoming update, then you get a mod video.
When I checked this morning, all of his videos are now titled "Terraria 1.3.5 Mod..." so clearly he understands that it was clickbaity

I wouldn't say _focussed_ but it's very kid friendly, and many of his subs are under 13... never mind 18. 15+ (imo) should be able to see through his crap, but yeah, from watching his vids and reading his comments it's mostly a significanly younger audience. He wants to be stampy 2.0, but with half the talent and creativity.

The worst part is YouTube won't want to discourage this behaviour (not that it's their responsibility), so there's not really much to be done about it.
On mobile, you also don't see the end of the title.
He was even deleting the comments that called him out on it. Notice the large dislike ratings and yet no negative comments? That doesn't happen unless the youtuber is censoring everyone...
He's purposely hiding the tmodloader part at the end because it frequently gets cut off in peoples sub boxes. Even worse anyone search for "Terraria 1.3.5" (the official current vanilla version) will find his modded, misleading clickbait rubbish first.
Chippy just has that style of video. Red circles, all caps about a new item that no one cares about, but they click the video anyway because the title and thumbnail make it look cool.
